Ben has recently graduated college, with his parents now expecting great things from him. At his "Homecoming" party, Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner, has Ben drive her home, which leads to an affair between the two. The affair eventually ends, but comes back to haunt him when he finds himself falling for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's daughter. It makes us understand why Ben just has to do what he does, also telling us that Ben is not the strongest person in the world. Ross is quite nice too, although her character is pretty forgettable. If Ben would have chosen for Mrs. Robinson instead of the daughter it would probably have been more believable.Captain of the Crosscountry TeamHead of the Debating ClubAssociate Editor of the college newspaper in his Junior yearManaging Editor in his Senior………...Overall I think this is a great film, with only the ending as really implausible, although I must admit I liked it this way. Even if it has flaws, even if it is a little dated at times, it feels fresh and is more entertaining than most films today. The Graduate was a movie that everyone could relate to. The feeling of being thrown out into the world and life just passing you by is overwhelming which is how we find out main character Benjamin feeling. When we first meet him he stares straight ahead with a look that could mean so many things and in fact I felt that through out the movie I could never really tell how he felt except by the change if music and its tempo. I found Hoffman's character hard to grasp except that he is just going through the motions in his monkey suit to make his parents happy. The action is mainly seen through the eyes of Benjamin Braddock, a confused twenty-one year old, who is worried about his future but who does not simply want to follow the commercial path of his affluent family and their friends. When Benjamin is on the plane there is a head shot of him staring straight ahead and his head seems to be enveloped by the brilliantly white head rest. I found that shot to be amusing because it showed the innocence that he possessed even after completing four years of college. Benjamin was the prodigal son who did everything to make his parents happy, even when he voiced complaints to his father about the party or the diving suit; he was never heard, throughout the movie his character is ignored until he meets Elaine. One of the many great scenes that drive the point across that he is lost in his own world where he can only hear himself is when he comes out for his 21st birthday party and his father will not listen to his objections. The audience is taken into the back yard through Benjamin's perspective (his own world) looking through the goggles. All we can hear is his breath and all he can hear is himself which is what he is used to. His breath blocks every body out and he is pushed repeatedly back into the pool by his father. Benjamin decides to stay submerged and avoid reality. This theme of submersion is present in the beginning of the movie when he is looking through the fish tank and watches the fish swim around, they seem so free yet they can only swim so far before they are back where they started.Benjamin feels alone in the beginning until Mrs. Robinson begins to show an interest in him and pretty soon that white 'halo' from the plane turns to black. As far as the viewer can tell there is no emotional connection between Ben and Mrs. Robinson, he still walks around aimlessly and his manner turns from that of a paranoid youth, like many of us, to an almost cocky young man. An interesting aspect between the relationship of Ben and Mrs. Robinson is the way the gender roles are switched. Ben is interested in involving conversation to their meetings and feels like he is being used while Mrs. Robison just wants to be purely physical. Ben has a more feminine personality then Mrs. Robison because she has so many secrets kept inside. The romance between Ben and Elaine is somewhat rushed because one second they are in a adult club where Elaine feels insulted and wants nothing to do with Ben, and then the next thing we know they are laughing and getting along and going on another date. The next instance Elaine is being married off yet she does not object. When Ben shows up to the wedding it is hard to say whether she is happy because she loves him or if she is happy because he offers and escape for her. All she can hear is Ben screaming her name, everyone else is blocked out.。

The movie, which I watched with anticipation, encompassed various themes that resonated with my own experiences and journey towards adulthood. After its conclusion, I found myself reflecting upon the story, the characters, and the lessons I had learned from the film. The film revolved around the life of a group of graduating high school students, each facing their own personal struggles and uncertainties about the future. It explored themes such as friendship, family dynamics, and the pursuit of dreams. The director skillfully employed visually stunning cinematography and a compelling narrative to captivate the audience's attention and elicit a range of emotions. One aspect that struck me was the authenticity of the characters. They were portrayed in a realistic and relatable manner, allowing me to connect with their experiences and emotions. The lead character, Sarah, particularly stood out to me. Her portrayal as a determined and ambitious young woman resonated with my own aspirations and dreams. As I watched her overcome obstacles and navigate through difficult choices, I couldn't help but see parts of myself in her struggles. The film also tackled the complexities of relationships, particularly those between friends and family. The dynamics between the characters highlighted the importance of support and understanding during challengingtimes. The interactions between Sarah and her close-knit group of friends showcased the power of friendship in providing emotional support and encouragement. It reminded me of the significance of surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who will uplift and inspire me as I embark on my own journey beyond graduation.Furthermore, the film touched upon the relationships with family and the impact they have on shaping our identities. It depicted both the unconditional love and understanding as well as the conflicts and disagreements that can arise within families. This portrayal made me appreciate the influence my own family has had on my personal development and highlighted the importance of maintaining strong familial bonds. One of the most profound messages conveyed by the film was the exploration of pursuing one's dreams. It emphasized the importance of following one's passions and embracing the uncertainties that come with taking risks. This resonated deeply with me as I approach graduation, unsure of what lies ahead. The film reminded me that it is okay to embrace uncertainty and to trust in my abilities and aspirations. As the movie reached its climax, I found myself experiencing a range of emotions. The narrative had managed to evoke laughter, tears, and a sense of introspection. It left me questioning my own aspirations and reflecting on the choices I would have to make as I navigate through my post-graduation journey. The film provided a valuable space for self-reflection and self-discovery, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of my own hopes and fears. In conclusion, the graduation student film I watched served as a poignant reflection on life, exploring themes of friendship, family, and the pursuit of dreams. Through compelling characters and an emotionally engaging narrative, the film resonated with my own experiences and provided a space for self-reflection. As I prepare to embark on my post-graduation journey, I am reminded of the significance of friendships, the impact of family, and the importance of embracing uncertainties and pursuing my passions. The film has left a lasting impression on me, and I am grateful for the insights it has provided as I step into the next chapter of my life.。

As a seasoned film critic, I find it a pleasure to delve into the intricacies of The Graduate, a film that has stood the test of time and continues to resonate with audiences decades after its release. Directed by Mike Nichols and released in 1967, The Graduate is a poignant exploration of the transition from college to the real world, a journey fraught with uncertainty, confusion, and the inevitable growing pains of adulthood. The films protagonist, Benjamin Braddock, played by a young Dustin Hoffman, is the epitome of the aimless youth. Fresh out of college, he returns to his affluent suburban home, only to find himself at a loss, unsure of what to do with his life. His parents expectations, the societal pressures, and his own internal struggles are palpable, creating a sense of unease that permeates the entire film. What struck me most about The Graduate was its ability to capture the essence of youthful disillusionment. The opening scene, with Benjamins face obscured by the dark, sets the tone for the rest of the film. Its a masterful use of visual storytelling, hinting at the protagonists inner turmoil. As the film progresses, we see Benjamin grappling with the emptiness of his existence, a feeling that many young adults can relate to.The performances in The Graduate are nothing short of exceptional. Dustin Hoffmans portrayal of Benjamin is nuanced and layered, capturing the characters vulnerability, naivety, and gradual awakening to the complexities of life. Anne Bancroft, as the seductive Mrs. Robinson, delivers a powerful performance that is both captivating and unsettling. Her character serves as a catalyst for Benjamins transformation, pushing himout of his comfort zone and into a world of moral ambiguity. The films exploration of love and relationships is another aspect that I found particularly compelling. The unconventional romance between Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson is fraught with tension and ethical dilemmas. Its a relationship that is both thrilling and deeply flawed, reflecting the confusion and desperation that often accompany the transition from youth to adulthood. As the story unfolds, we see Benjamin falling in love with Mrs. Robinsons daughter, Elaine. This unexpected turn of events adds another layer of complexity to the narrative, as Benjamin must navigate the tangled web of emotions and loyalties. The climactic scene at the church, with Benjamin racing to stop Elaines wedding, is a testament to the films ability to create a sense of urgency and emotional intensity. The cinematography in The Graduate is also noteworthy. The use of closeups, tracking shots, and innovative camera angles adds depth to the storytelling and enhances the emotional impact of the film. The iconic shot of Benjamins face in the pool, with the scuba mask obscuring his eyes, is a powerful visual metaphor for his inability to see clearly or navigate the murky waters of adulthood. The films soundtrack, composed by Simon Garfunkel, perfectly complements the narrative and adds an emotional resonance to the film. The songs, with their melancholic melodies and introspective lyrics, capture the essence of the characters experiences and the overall mood ofthe film.In conclusion, The Graduate is a timeless classic that offers a profound and insightful look into the complexities of growing up. Its a film that speaks to the universal experiences of uncertainty, selfdiscovery, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. With its exceptional performances, compelling narrative, and masterful use of visual and auditory elements, The Graduate remains a cinematic masterpiece that continues to captivate and inspire audiences to this day.。

Graduate's Movie Review: A Reflection on the Silver ScreenAs a fresh-faced graduate, life is filled with a myriad of emotions, anticipation, and a sense of infinite possibilities. The transition from the cocooned existence of a student to the vast unknown of the professional world comes with its own set of challenges and uncertainties. Amidst this whirlwind of change, I sought solace in the art of cinema, and recently, I had the opportunity to watch a thought-provoking film that left an indelible impression on my mind. Let me delve into my experience and share my thoughts on this captivating piece of cinema. The film that captivated my attention goes by the title "Infinite Horizon." Directed by a visionary filmmaker, this cinematic marvel delves into the depths of the human psyche, unraveling the complexities of life's journey. The narrative revolves around the life of a young protagonist, Michael, who embarks on a soul-searching adventure after graduating from college. One aspect of the film that struck me was its stellar cinematography. The director's meticulous attention to detail and use of unique camera angles transported me into the heart of the story, making me feel like an active participant rather than a mere spectator. The masterful control of lighting and color added depth and meaning to each scene, evoking a range of emotions that resonated with the audience. The character development in "Infinite Horizon" was another aspect that stood out to me. Michael's transformation throughout the film mirrored the challenges and uncertainties that many graduates face when entering the realworld. His journey from naivety to self-discovery was relatable and compelling, reminding me of my own personal growth during this transitional phase of my life.Furthermore, the film explored universal themes such as love, ambition, and the pursuit of identity. Michael's pursuit of love and his desire to blaze his own trail in the world struck a chord with me. The nuanced portrayal of these themes left me contemplating the intricate tapestry of human existence and the choices we make as we navigate our own infinite horizons. The film's soundtrack deserves special mention as well. The haunting melodies intertwined with the unfolding drama on-screen added an ethereal dimension to the overall experience. The music effortlessly complemented the emotional moments and intensified the impact of pivotal scenes. It seamlessly transported me into the characters' inner worlds, heightening the emotional connection and creating a lasting impression. One particular scene that left an indelible mark on my psyche was a dialogue between Michael and his mentor. The mentor imparted a profound piece of wisdom that resonated deeply with my own aspirations as a graduate. He said, "Success is not a destination, but a journey. Embrace the uncertainties, for they are the stepping stones to growth and self-discovery.""Infinite Horizon" is not just a film; it is a soul-stirring work of art that serves as a mirror to our own hopes, dreams, and fears. It challenges us to reflect on our individual journeys and the paths we choose to follow. The film crafts a narrative that encourages us to embrace the unknown, to conquer our fears, and to create our own unique legacies. In conclusion, "Infinite Horizon" is a cinematic gem that resonated deeply with me as a graduate on the cusp of a new chapter in life. Its stunning visuals, profound storytelling, and relatable themes combined to create a transformative movie-watching experience. This film serves as a poignant reminder that life is an ever-evolving journey, and it is up to us to explore the infinite horizons that lay before us.。
Film Review of The GraduateQ1. The part(s) impressed me most is/are the relationship between Benjamin and his parents,Benjamin’s confused eyes.Q2. Personally, I think this movie is a little difficult for me to know the real meaning of thismovie, because it described the society in America during 1960s,but it’s far away from me. In order to get the real meaning I search background about this movie. It helps me a lot. I can’t deny that the film reflects the real society in America in 1960s,it’s a quite an unusual period,in another word it’s a hardship for young American. Most of them are confused, lost , aimless, self- doubt ,alienation and struggled . Ben is one of the presents for young adult. It’s a peculiar generation, because of their rebelliousness .the next generation can live a happier life and find their goal for their lives.Q3. After watching this movie, I know that parents are important for our lives and societyinfluences a person’s life deeply. We should have our own aim ,our own thoughts about our future. Without aim we have no direction, without own idea we will be easy to be corrupt .Ben had an affair with Mrs. Robinson because he doesn’t find something to do. After his graduating, one thing is dating with Mrs. Robinson and the other is drifting. his life is dull so he needs to find something that kills his time .it waste time at the same time it’s meaningless. so it reminds of our aim our plan. To be a real person. Don’t be at ease for a long time and find youself.I would like to talk about the generation gap and hero’s confusion of thismovie.American always say that America is a democratic country. Everyone is equal .But generation gap occurs in this kind of country , it’s a bit strange . The Graduate main character is Benjamin Braddock. After Benjamin graduated from the college ,His parents hold a party to welcome his back ,they invited their friends ,but there was no Ben’s friend. Others still think that Ben and his parents have a good relationship,in fact it’s totally wrong. From the party We can draw a conclusion that they didn’t consider Ben’s feeling. Most of their friends had achievements, but Ben was just a college graduate. It really let him down and made him worry about his future. Personally I think there is another reason that why his parents have a party, they are showing off their son ,his father read out all of Ben’s honor in his college period. At that time Ben escaped to his room upstairs, his behavior indicated that he was unwilling to have this kind of party. His parents ignored him. Even his father knows Ben had a lot of confusion of his future,he didn’t give Ben some advice.Another party for his birthday ,his parents wanted him to dive. his father still forced him,so he was unwilling to do it even though there were some applause. It was more falling than diving. He was not closed to his parents so he Seldom cheated with his parents about his confusion. As a matter of fact he was afraid of his parents. He was just a twenty years young adult how he can bear it. He wanted to be different but he didn’t know how to become different. Having an affair with his father’s partner’s wife who are almost twice his age was a different love. His parents always pushed him to do some things that he didn’t like ,he wanted to be against them.It was one of the rebelliousness that he had an affair with Mrs. Robinson. He was struggled but no one can help him. He was hopeless.I can never forget the perplexed in hero’s eyes.,on his way home,I think that it’s a wonderful thing for most people but Benjamin with a dull facial expression. It’s abnormal. Benjamin has a lot of eyes’feature, we can get some information through his eyes. He was confused about his future ,his job,his lover, his marriage and so on. There are so many things to be considered that he has some ideas. As a popular saying says that once you are a college graduate, meanwhile it means that you are out of your job,For Ben it works. I remember one scene:Ben lies on a raft in his swimming pool. Personally I think it symbolizes Ben’s life. He likes living in water so it’s hard to find the direction. Mrs. Robinsons likes a lifeboat for him to save him because he can’t save himself ,so he has no other choice until he meets Elaine. He is confused what is he really wanted ,let’s say ,having an affair with Mrs. Robinsons or fall in love with Elaine. In fact the movie doesn’t have a happy ending, Elaine ran away with Ben but their future is uncertain, their eyes both were still full of perplexity. I could not find their future from their eyes and behavior. In one word, the young adult is confused ,struggled and perplexed about their future their job their love their marriage almost their everything. we call them troubled generations, they really suffer a lot .suffering makes all of us growing. Now I am sophomore ,yet we suffer more. when I was a freshman I was confused and aimless,it’s same as Ben. But now I’m too busy to have time to be at ease. But I’m sure that I will have a long time to be in confusion,I hope I can do better than Ben and Elaine .I will be try me best to be different,Actions is better than words.II. Language Points of1. You may hear of it that the comedy’s core is the tragedy. The director of the Graduate showed us the tragic truth in the form of comedy. It is a comedy for its happy ending that two young people fled away from the church, while it is a tragedy for the social problems that this movie revealed-- the generation gap, the youth’s identity crisis and the lost generations’ struggles and awakening.First of all, the Graduate showed us a huge generation gap between the parents and their children. What their parents expected were getting their children higher degree, a respectable job like neurosurgeon, investment bankers and corporate lawyers, and finally finding a matchable marriage partner in spite of their children’s dreams. However their brilliant children did not want to get one of those jobs mentioned above, since they hoped to distinguish from others. Thus, at the beginning of the movie, our leading actor, Ben Braddock, said to his father, “I want to be different.” Ben tried to defy their parents’ orders and the society’s rule, while at the same time the young man started to have a serious identity crisis. Why did ben have an identity crisis? Perhaps it was because he found himself being nothing without his parents’ guidance. On one hand, he tried to pursue a different life without his parents, while on the other hand, he had no idea of what to do in the future. Such an excellent young man like him, a scholarship owner with great reputation in campus having no plan and dream for future sounded really ironic. Nevertheless, it was the truth.Ben started to get lost and confused about his future life. When people get confused, someone chooses to confront it bravely and tries to come up with a solution, while others choose to escape. And the majority of the lost generation in 1960s are choosing to get away from it. Some chose drugs, rock music, and sex.The lost generation got stuck in those affairs and tried to struggle. In the process of struggling, they seemed to awaken themselves. Just as our heroine, when Ben wore goggles under the six-foot deep pool in his parents’ wishes, staring at the blank blue sky, he must felt unprecedentedly lonely and desperate, so he choose to escape from the real world—— to have sex with Mrs. Robinson, an alcoholic who tried to seduce Ben before. Mrs. Robinson gave Ben a chance to get away from confronting truth and confusing future. They only slept but hardly talked to each other. Then, he met Elaine, an innocent beautiful lady at Ben’s age.. Naturally, they fell in love with each other. Unfortunately, their love was confronted with betrayal and lies. Afterward Elaine left Ben away, at that time Ben suddenly noticed what he really wanted. He wanted Elaine. When Elaine was persuaded to marry another man, Ben rushed to the church and won Elaine back. They fled away the church and got on a bus. Finally, it seemed to be a happy ending. But what was the next station of the young couple? They are likely to need time to think about it, and so do we.PhraseBe flattered 受宠若惊Sow a few wild oats 放轻松Hit off 适合Nice gesture 好机会Unclench ones fist 动手QuestionWhy didn’t Mrs. Robinson want Ben to date with her daughter?

Graduation marks a significant milestone in one's life, symbolizing the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter. As a recent graduate, I had the opportunity to reflect on this transformative period after watching the movie "Graduation." This heartwarming film portrayed the struggles, growth, and hopes of a group of young individuals on their journey towards adulthood. Through its realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by graduates, this movie left a lasting impact on me.The movie "Graduation" follows the lives of a diverse group of students as they navigate the complexities of post-graduate life. One of the main themes that resonated with me was the sense of uncertainty and fear that accompanies the transition from the structured environment of school to the unpredictable world beyond. The characters in the film grappled with questions about their future careers, relationships, and personal identities. These pivotal moments of doubt and self-discovery were relatable, reminding me of the internal struggles I faced during my own graduation. The director skillfully captures the essence of this unique period in life, highlighting the emotional rollercoaster that recent graduates often experience. One particularly captivating scene depicted the characters' mixed emotions during their graduation ceremony. Tears of joy mingling with tears of sadness perfectly encapsulated the bittersweet nature of bidding farewell to a familiar phase of life. As the characters embarked on different paths, such as pursuing higher education, starting new jobs, or traveling, their journeys served as a reflection of the diverse possibilities that lay ahead. In addition to the emotional aspect, the movie also shed light on the societal expectations and pressures placed upon graduates. The characters grappled with the weight of their parents' hopes and dreams, the pressure to conform to societal norms, and the fear of failure. These external influences often shaped their decisions and actions, causing internal conflicts. The film beautifully delved into the characters' struggles, delving deep into the complexities of their identities and the choices they made in order to find their own sense of fulfillment and happiness."Graduation" also touched upon the importance of friendship and support during this turbulent phase of life. The characters leaned on each other for guidance, reassurance, and a sense of belonging. Their relationships evolved and grew, providing a support system that helped them navigate the challenges they faced. This aspect resonated with me as I realized the significance of maintaining strong connections with friends during this transitional period. Their presence offers a sense of grounding and comfort amidst the uncertainties that lie ahead.Furthermore, the movie emphasized the importance of personal growth and resilience. The characters encountered obstacles, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. However, they persevered, learning valuable life lessons along the way. This resonated deeply with me, as I recognized that my own experiences post-graduation have similarly shaped me into a stronger and more resilient individual. The film served as a reminder that setbacks and challenges are integral to personal growth and should be embraced rather than feared. In conclusion, "Graduation" is a thought-provoking film that offers a realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by recent graduates. The movie captures the emotional rollercoaster of this transitional period, highlighting the uncertainties, fears, and personal growth that accompany it. Through the characters' journeys, we witness the importance of friendship, support, and resilience in navigating this transformative phase of life. As a recent graduate, this film resonated deeply with me, reminding me of the ups and downs I experienced during my own transition from student to adulthood. "Graduation" is not just a movie; it is a powerful reflection of the universal struggles and triumphs that graduates encounter on their journey towards self-discovery and success.。
The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols, is a classic coming-of-age film that explores themes of disillusionment and seduction. Released in 1967, the film follows the story of Benjamin Braddock, who has just graduated from college and is uncertain about his future.Dustin Hoffman delivers a stunning performance as Benjamin, capturing the character's vulnerability and confusion. As the film begins, Benjamin is unsure of what he wants to do with his life, feeling pressured by both his parents and society to have a successful career. This sense of uncertainty resonates with many young viewers who have also experienced the overwhelming expectations placed upon them. One of the standout moments in the film is Benjamin's affair with Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft. Their relationship starts off as a game of cat and mouse, with Mrs. Robinson seducing Benjamin. This forbidden romance adds an exciting and suspenseful element to the film. The chemistry between Hoffman and Bancroft on-screen is palpable, making their scenes together captivating to watch. However, it is the film's portrayal of Benjamin's existential crisis that sets it apart. Benjamin is torn between following societal expectations and finding his own path. This struggle is expertly portrayed through Hoffman's nuanced performance, as he conveys Benjamin's feelings of being lost and trapped. The film's use of close-ups and lingering shots perfectly captures Benjamin's inner turmoil, making the audience empathize with his predicament. The symbolism in The Graduate is also noteworthy. One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Benjamin is seen swimming in his parents' pool. The pool represents the shallowness of suburban life and the society that Benjamin is rebelling against. This scene perfectly encapsulates Benjamin's desire to break free from the constraints of his parents' world. Additionally, the use of Simon & Garfunkel's soundtrack adds another layer of meaning to the film, with songs like "The Sound of Silence" perfectly complementing Benjamin's feelings of isolation. In conclusion, The Graduate is a timeless film that continues to resonate with audiences. Its exploration of youth, disillusionment, and rebellion is as relevant today as it was in 1967. Dustin Hoffman's impeccable performance, along with Mike Nichols' direction, makes this film a must-watch for anyone going through a period of questioning and uncertainty in their lives. The Graduate remains a cinematic masterpiece that captures the complexities of growing up and finding one's place in the world.。
The Graduate" is one of the best films I have ever had the pleasure to witness, and I only wish I were alive when it was first released. Dustin Hoffman, in his first major film role, plays Benjamin Braddock: the epitome of the confused and isolated young adult male. He sits in his room and does nothing. He lies around in his parent's pool for hours on end. Ben, who has just graduated from college, is home for the summer. Then, after an awkward sexual encounter with a friend of his parents named Mrs. Robinson, a one night stand turns into a summer romance. But betrayal soon follows as Benjamin falls for Mrs. Robinson's daughter, Elaine.Nichol's directorial genius (he won an Oscar for the film) really shows in the opening party sequence celebrating Ben's arrival home. There is a close-up of Ben's face as he stumbles his way through the event, listening to advice and shaking hands with the faceless (much like his future) masses. The camera moves in such a way that a feeling of claustrophobia comes over the viewer. They are overcome by what is going on around them, much like Benjamin is at this crossroads in his life. Another example is when Ben first arrives at the fateful hotel where he meets Mrs. Robinson for sex. He walks around the lobby, suspicious that the desk clerk is on to him, and then he attempts to walk into a room. Only a large group of the elderly walks out, and Benjamin stands there holding the door for them. Then he proceeds inside, only to be passed by a group of high school students. This image once again reinforces the crossroads that Ben is at in his life. After finally viewing this classic, I realized that many of my favorite directors to emerge from the 90's (mainly Wes Anderson) were greatly influenced by this film. What's more interesting is that "The Graduate" was a landmark film for American cinema and the decade in which it was released, sharing the same themes that Benjamin experiences throughout the film. Most of American cinema was very conventional up until the 60's. Nothing extremely scandalous was shown in a film, and many serious topics were not widely addressed through cinema…yet. "The Graduate" is the perfect mix of old and new. It's the 'bridge' that separates the standard American films from the more experimental ones that would emerge all throughout the 1970's.The same can be said for the decade of the 1960's. America lost its innocence the day Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. For the next five years, the country went through a spiral of events that led to the sexual revolution of the late 1960's. And "The Graduate" separates the white picket fences of the 50's and early 60's from the Rock and Roll and drugs of the late 1960's and early 70's. It's a crossroads in the middle of the most turbulent time in American history. In one of the films most ironic images, a tired and lonesome Benjamin slumps on a bench on the Berkley campus (an important place for the sexual revolution) under an American flag blowing in the wind. The flag still waves, but Benjamin is beat. He represents the fall and eventual metamorphosis of the American dream. But aside from all its serious themes and deeper meanings, "The Graduate" is a comedy at its heart. It contains one of the funniest and most exciting climaxes in cinema. And the final image is a knockout. It shows Benjamin and Elaine sitting at the end of a bus filled with elders, looking ahead blankly, at the road and at their future. Then the bus drives off in the distance. They do notknow where their future is headed, or where the bus is even going. It was the same circumstance for America in 1967. The film closes with the same song it opened with: "The Sounds of Silence".(ZZ from IMDB)。
About The GraduateWhen you watch it for the first time, you will feel confused about it and even dislike it;then you watch a second time and start to think deep about it and even love it. That’s my feeling about the film The Graduate. Ben, a promising young man in adults’mind, felt lost after his graduation. Although he had a successful university life, he couldn’t find out where is his future. No one could understand his mind, including his parents. Thus he got trapped in the seduction of Mrs. Robinson, a middle-age charming woman as well as Ben’s parents’friend. There is no love between them but sexual relationship. Then Ben found the youth and innocence in Elaine, Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, and fell in love with her. However, his love was doomed to be full of difficulty. He must face the music for all that he had done before. At last, Ben bravely pursued his true love and eloped with Elaine from her wedding ceremony.Actually, The Graduate is a mirror for any young peoplewho are confused about the future. It’s horrible to have no dream in life. Confusion, emptiness, and anxietythen will come together. If we still can’t get understanding from our family or friends, instead feel great pressure from family’s high expectation, we may choose to escape by doing certain insane things. That’s what the film tells us. The confusion in Ben’s blue eyes was a very important clue for presenting the theme of this film.In the plane back home from his university, at his graduate party, after having sex with Mrs. Robinson and even in the bus successfully eloping with Elaine, in all these scenes his eyes were full of confusion about the future. The so-called happy ending is not a real one because Ben still didn’t know what to do next and where to go after that. That’s also the situation of young people in America in 1960s.。
Analysis of the GraduateThe Graduate is directed by Mike Nichols'. The film through the description of university graduates who has love experience, reflects the growth of young people and adults society to resist, the film to set the Thames a great coup posture, become "new Hollywood film" play a decisive role in a representative.Introduction of the graduate. This is a sory of a graduate man who named Benjamin. His father held a big party for him but he had no interest about it.He just felt confused of his future. At the party,Mrs.Robinson seduced him.At first,he refused her. However, after several days of having no idea,he decided to have sex with her at a local hotel. All is going well until Mr.Robinson insisted that Ben take out his daughter Elaine.Mrs.Robinson was determined to not let Ben go with Elaine. But Ben didn’t follow what she said and finally fell in love with Eline.Unfortunately, others found the truth and Eline decieded to leave Ben.This time.Ben was not confused again. Finally,he and Eline ran away from Eline’s wedding. The theme music of the Graduate:The theme music about this movie is called ‘sound of silent’, from Simon & Garfunkel. And the other two music from this movie are called 'Mrs. Robinson' and 'Scarborough Fair'.This theme song is very sweet and full of the melancholy. It helps to show Ben’s confusion and also make a melancholy and helpless atmosphere. This song appears three times, the beginning, the medium and the end, leaves a deep impression to the audience. The background of the Graduate:In the 1960s,the development of America’s economy grew quickly. The young people began to doubt the rationality of the old tradition. The civil rights movement, women’s liberatiom movemont, against the Vietnam war all reflicted the disruptive and destruct ive of the American young people’s helpless, confusing and dissatisfaction to the social reality. The heroine of the film,Ben, is a promising young man, he was prominent and young, but after graduation,he lost the direction of life, and thus created a malformed love story. The film reveals that the America society brings people hesitation and confusion, especially to the younger generation. When a student just graduates from the university, faces the future feels dazed. After he was caught in a married woman and then falls in love with her young daughter. This is the era of sorrow. The movie reflects the growth of young people and adults social revolt, is the embodiment of a green hand young people how to overcome confusion, how to break through the shackles of the adult society. The tone is a comedy, but the theme is really heavy and serious, it is in this "serious funny", the film reflects a sense of irony, let this satirical intensity is increased. On the other hand, as a society of artists, for social satire is often good, also as far as possible to the extreme extent and to the public can accept, but comedy is the ideal neutralizer. When an old order to new strong above the individual, the individual is nothing more than two kinds of reactions, one is to accept the old order of oppression, another is to break through the layers of oppression, rose in revolt. Especially for a kid just step out of University, social order has early by parents as you planned, this order is "adult society" ideology, if this ideology is decadent be inopportune or inappropriate, it will produce one or several revolt broke through all the individual strength. The classical scene of the Graduate:We can infinitly image that the director in order to the show the confusion and helplessness of Ben, deliberately inserted let he put on a diving suit step by step to go to the swimming pool as a scene. From the diving suit can only see people laughing but can not hear their voices. In a world, only can hear his breathing, confused numb heart makes everyone's face is slow, twisted, stationary. This is Ben's inner monologue, or is a manifestation of he loathed on the outside. In every just stepped into the society of people's eyes, all hostile or friendly advice and reference, will be isolated out of their world. Diving suit seems to be Ben's protective shield, rushed into the water, he is anxious to get rid of all worldly reaction. The sound of breathing, covering the world of noise, but can't resist and restrict his impact on the outside. His father put him under water again and again, seems to imply that you should follow what I give and plan to you, you will always be a small flag in my hand! But he seemsto have only silently sink to the bottom, waiting for everything. The main analysis of the Graduate:There are too many contradictions and conflicts about Ben, and he just wants to escape. For him, to get away from it all, may be able to stay away from those false smile and the fake world, but we must be realistic, reality have no self, no resistance, no your own world. Most of us have lost the fairy of fantasy, has already lost a beautiful dreams for the future. But we occasionally have to struggle against the reality and a trace of fantasy. Ben breaks what his parents are proud of and to seek for spiritual rendezvous experience. Elaine is in his love turning, he also the twist of fate. From her, he finds the direction and power. In fact, this tells us, for all will embark on a society of young people, in a confused stage guidance is often ineffective, the key is to allow us to uncover social mysterious veil, to find the true meaning of life, found the secret of life. We can be confused, but don't lose yourself. Don't be a puppet of life, learn to find life, experience life, then can let own stage more beautiful。
