Anna Sproul-Latimer, a librarian from Arlington, Virginia, didn't realize that she had lost her laptop on the trip from New York City to Washington D. C. until she walked out of the railway station. She remembered clearly she had got on the train with her laptop.

She used the Find My iPhone app and located her laptop in Woodbridge, Virginia. She realized her laptop was likely stolen. She left messages on her computer through Find My iPhone-at first polite messages requesting help and then later messages of anger demanding its return. But she received no reply. Before anyone could take it off the grid(断网), she memorized its last listed location – a neighborhood in Woodbridge.

At first, she tried calling the police in her area, but there wasn't much that could be done since the laptop went missing in a state outside of the police's jurisdiction(管辖权).

She went to Google Earth and mapped the last location. Online, she found contact information for a couple who lived in the neighborhood. She took a chance and emailed them informing them of her hunt for her missing laptop. Then, she waited. She never heard back.

The couple did receive her entails, but instead of answering, they asked their neighbor-the founder of a computer repair and buy-hack company, DotSight Solutions-to hell, them.

The neighbor, Imran Moorad, had just returned from the Apple Store repairing a used computer he had purchased. When he heard about Sproul-Latimer's story, he examined the purchased computers carefully. He found that one of the serial numbers of the computers he'd bought matched Sproul-Latimer’s.

Moorad and Sproul-Latimer met up soon after at a Starbucks in Alexandria. Though

Moorad had spent $600 on the laptop purchase, he gave it back to her, no charge. To Moorad, even though he lost $600, Sproul-Latimer’s happiness and appreciation made it all worth it.

Celebrated annually on the second Monday in October, Columbus Day honors Italian explorer Christopher Columbus's discovery of America in 1492. However, the official holiday has constantly been argued due to the European settlers’ brutal treatment of the Native American people. It has also been argued that America had already been "discovered" by the indigenous(土著的)people when Columbus arrived.

Therefore, some states like Oregon, Iowa, and Nebraska have never observed it. South Dakota renamed it "(这个位置看不清) Americon Day" in 1990, while Hawaii has called the holiday "Discoverers’Day" since 1988. As public knowledge has increased, many schools and universities across the country have also stopped marking the event.

Even so, many people were still upset that Columbus Day remained an official holiday. An international conference in 1977 put forward renaming Columbus Day to "Indigenous Peoples’Day"·They believed renaming the holiday would help honor the victims of American colonization.

Though the propose(提议) passed, it was in 1992 that the first city-Berkeley,

CA-renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day. The coastal city of Santa Cruz, CA, followed shortly after, in 1994. The movement lost steam again until 2014, when Minneapolis, MN, Grand Rapids, MN, and Seattle, WA, decided to make the change. Since then, over 70 cities and states have switched to the new name. In 2019, three more states-New Mexico, Vermont, and Maine-voted in favor of the name change as well.

The movement has also gained ground in Latin America. Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Hondurus, Mexico, and Uruguay have all renamed Columbus Day to "Dia de la Raza" or "Day of the Race". It celebrates Latin America's mixed indigenous and European culture.

As would be expected, not everyone believes a name change is necessary. Italian Americans, who have made Columbus Day the most important feature of Italian Heritage Month, celebrated throughout October, argue the holiday honors the history of immigration(移民), not the explorer. They, therefore, believe the name should be kept.

28. What do you learn about Columbus Day?

Nowadays, college applications put a lot of emphasis on community service hours. Most high schools also have graduation requirements. More and more people are volunteering their time. However, I have begun to think that this may not be the best way to approach community service.

Some of my classmates tell me that they are highly involved in a voluntary organization for college applications. I ask them to explain in detail, and they reply with "Oh, I have X number of hours." With further questioning I have discovered that these volunteers don't even know the responsibility of the organization! This deeply bothered me. At what point did community service enter the category of "Required" and “Step to getting into a good college" rather than the categories of "Doing Good Things" and “How to Give Back"?

Community service should not be just about getting into college, or about gathering points for your resume(简历). It should be about helping the greater community, and learning what it means to be a generous citizen of our world. As to choosing the organization, don't think about how you will benefit from it, but how your actions will help others.

The main way to solve this issue would be to update the college and high-school requirements. Instead of just asking "how many hours have you volunteered", ask "how have your actions helped others". Look for personal commitment rather than concrete hours of community service.

Next time you are volunteering, try to forget the fact that your hours are important, because really, they are not. Choose organizations that you are enthusiastic about. Don't volunteer because you have to. Volunteer because it is the right thing to do as a human being. Next time you hear a friend commenting on how many hours they have, remind them that it isn't the numbers that change the world.

32. According to the passage, community service is required when people want to .

A. enter a good college

D. get a scholarship

33. What can we infer about the author?

A. He or she was turned down by a university.

B. He or she refused to do community service.

C. He or she is probably a high-school student.

D. He or she attended a voluntary organization.

34. In the author' s opinion, the present college and high-school requirements should

be .

A. avoided

B. improved

C. accomplished

D. supported

35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. College Applications Shouldn't Include Community Service .

B. Students Are Highly Involved in Voluntary Organizations

C. Community Service Hours Are Key to Entering Good Colleges

D. Community Service Is More Than School Requirements

Lorna, 16, rushed across and caught up with her dad, who had just kicked open the front door. They looked upstairs where they saw smoke coming out of the top flat. Lorna followed her father into the flat, where they found a pan on fire in the kitchen and the young mother, Mane Linn, who had been asleep, lost consciousness in the smoke-blackened sitting room. Lorna’s dad threw a wet cloth over the pan and then turned off the stove before starting to help Mane through the smoke down the stairs to safety. Even after I came out of the house, I wasn’t frightened.” When help arrived, baby Ann and her mum were taken to hospital for treatment.
