The ticket price is a very agreeable £40, an amount that the organizers promise covers only the costs of staging the event. As well as the night-club singers and dancers and circus performers, you can expect live performances from local stars. If this looks like it might be right for you, you’d be well advised to book your ticket soon; the event has sold out every year since its beginning four years ago. Sheep Music20-22 JulySheep Music started life as a garden party and has developed into a full-scale community event. Even though the advertising has always been limited to word of mouth, the huge number of people in 2005 left organizers worried that the large crowds could ruin the festival’s family feel. Luckily July sees the return of this brilliant party. The climax comes in the shape of Saturday night’s full-scale parade(游行)and fancy dress ball that you just would not expect to happen in the other sleepy Welsh borders. The Big Chill3-5 AugustTen years on and The Big Chill could very well be close to becoming a big pop festival like Glastonbury. That said, the many thousands in attendance are still able to relax in the beautiful Eastnor deer park and listen to plenty of music that would otherwise pass them by. Families have always been given a warm welcome and it’s fair to say that The Big Chill is probably the most child-friendly of all the medium-sized festivals. If you’ve never been, you should certainly go.Summer Sundae10-12 AugustAlthough only a year old this summer, Summer Sundae has quickly inspired the imagination of Leicesteks music lovers. Last year’s event was a success, noted by more than a few mentions at the UK Festival Awards. It is set in the impressive grounds of De Montfort Hall. Although the performers are still to be confirmed, the cabins are sure to be there. These small buildings are made from wood and carpets, storage space, and can fit a family for the night.56. Online team-buying offers huge discounts and becomes popular on campus.Li Jing, a student at China Youth University for Political Science, for example, says she often buys movie tickets on team-buying websites. But while they offer a good opportunity to save money, Li said she would ―think twice before buying them from online stores‖. Because many of them are ―a bit chaotic(混乱的), and have fake goods mixed among them. Then why don’t the students just earn more pocket money by taking up part-time jobs? Guo Na, a teacher at the Communication University of China, said most college students were unlikely to choose work-study programs to earn pocket money because of their intensive study schedules.A kind of card called ―VELO‖has become another ideal choice for many money savers. It provides all-round discounts while dining out or shopping in general. Cao Zuyang, a student at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, often searches for sales online and buys things together with friends to cut down on costs. Cao once wanted to buy an electro-magnetic oven, which was on sale at a shopping website. He then asked five dormitory roommates to pitch in for the oven. Each student only paid 25 yuan. Most students find it difficult to deal with the expense of accommodation while traveling. So they choose to travel to cities where they have friends and live in their dorms. For instance, Ge Rui, a student at the Hebei University of Technology, has been to many cities where he has friends. ―Friends can act as free guides, offer me free accommodation, give me valuable tour information, and broaden my mind at the same time,‖ he said. He also had friends from other cities coming over and living with him when they visited his city.61. What does the writer mainly tell us?A. The ways of saving money on campus.B. The passage is probably taken from .A. a personal diaryB. a travel magazineC. an advertisementD. an official paper65. What do we know about the mentioned persons?A. Li Jing didn’t believe she could save money by buying something online.B. Guo Na said most of the students were lazy to take up part-time jobs.C. Cao Zuyang and his roommates bought five electro-magnetic ovens.D. Ge Rui saved much money when traveling in other cities.CPlastic is one of the most important technological discoveries of the 20th century. However, it may soon be replaced. The new development—liquid wood—can replace plastics in all branches of modern industries.Plastic as a material enjoys the biggest demand in the modern world, but it does have a number of drawbacks. First and foremost, plastic isn’t recyclable. Secondly, it contains toxins(毒物)helping develop cancerous diseases. Finally, it’s made of oil and oil reserves aren’t endless. The liquid wood technology is likely to replace plastic and provide mankind with new materials for many years ahead. Norbert Eisenfreich, a senior researcher at the Faunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) in Germany, said that arboform, the new material, is made of lignin(木质素), which can be obtained from soft tissues of wood. Once mixed with several other materials, it turns into solid and non-toxic alternative for plastics.ICT team leader Emilia Regina Inone-Kauffmann said the wood-working industry separates wood into three basic components, including lignin. Lignin isn’t used for the production of paper. Specialists of ICT mixed lignin with several natural materials and thus invented the material which could be melted and molded(铸型).When solid, arboform looks like plastic and possesses the qualities of polished wood. It can be used for the production of any items. Arboform is already used for the production of car parts which require extra strength. In addition, liquid wood can be recycled repeatedly. The material preserves all of its qualities even if it’s reprocessed ten times. However, the new invention doesn’t enjoy an extensive use due to the high content of sulphur(硫)in it. German researchers are sure to reduce the amount of sulphur by 90 percent very soon to make arboform usable for home needs.66. According to the passage, plastic .A. plays a big role in the modern worldB. helps to protect our environment in some wayC. has been replaced by the newly discovered materialD. helps us to reduce the use of petrol67. The underlined word ―alternative‖ in Paragraph 3 refers to .A. lignin or arboformB. plasticsC. mixture of several materialsD. soft tissues of wood68. What’s the advantage of arboform over plastics?A. It is easily made from natural oil.B. It is more widely used in household.C. It is recyclable and friendly to the environment.D. It contains no poisonous materials.69. It can be concluded that German researchers will focus their future work firstly on .A. the material’s extensive useB. the content of sulphur in arboformC. the production cost of arboformD. the qualities of liquid wood70. What’s the main purpose of the passage?A. To advertise the new material—arboform.B. To introduce liquid wood which will replace plastic.C. To advertise new products made of arboform.D. To show readers how to produce arboform.Part IV Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.Hearing a child say their first word is a magical moment. Children are eager to learn, and the more they are encouraged, the more they will try. Here are some tips on how to encourage speech development.Early encouragementIt is essential to speak to a child from their newborn stage. Pronounce words clearly so that children can grasp the spoken word. This will help them learn to speak.Positive wordsChildren engage more when it is fun and interesting, and when their efforts are acknowledged. Be positive by giving recognition when new words are learned, and emphasize how exciting these mom ents are. When a word is spoken that isn’t completely clear or is mispronounced, it should be repeated clearly. Never pay too much attention to mistakes, and instead strengthen correct pronunciation by repeating the word directly after the child.ReadingA fun way to encourage speech development is by sharing books with children. Reading aloud to a child introduces them to new words and ideas.Singing nursery rhymesChildren are often enticed(吸引)by music, as it grabs their attention and attracts their interest. Singing nursery rhymes will often encourage speech development, as children tend to be able to learn and memorize the words when they are sung. There are many different nursery rhymes that make youngsters smile.CommunicationAlways make eye contact when speaking to a child to get them engaged. Repetition is important to help encourage speech development. Facial expressions and gestures, as well as tones are just as important to provide understanding. Acknowledge their efforts and attempts to speak, and repeat words slowly to allow them to follow the mouth movements.Learning to speak and communicate with others is a milestone(里程碑)and a fun journey for the child. Every parent adores the sound of their baby babbling(儿语)and looks forward to their first words. But this development does not happen by accident and parents can play a great contributory role in their children’s speech development.Title: How to encourage children’s 71.Section B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Created in 2022, the cafe was a response to the need in the community for programs that would enable youth with special needs to develop social and professional skills in a safe environment. The cafe was the idea of Pennsylvania mom Maureen Stanko, a teacher, fitness instructor, and musician, who was concerned about her son Nick, who has autism (孤独症) and food allergies, and what he would be able to do after graduation. In Pennsylvania, students with disabilities can stay in school until age 22, but worrying about Nick’s future is what keeps Stanko up at night.Stanko was so worried that she spoke to Nick’s therapist, Tyler Kammerle, who had dreamed about opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. The two worked together to make this a reality. Two years later, the So Much To Give Inclusive Cafe was born. It employed 63 people and 80 percent of them have some form of disability. The cafe is more than just a space to work; it’s also a place for people with disabilities and their families to dine. “We’d never even taken Nick to a restaurant before because we wouldn’t spend all this money to eat out to be completely stressed out,” Stanko said. “This cafe has taught Nick how to sit in a restaurant. And now we have a place to go, where if he stands up and starts hopping or clapping, nobody cares.”The inclusive cafe has made a real difference in people’s lives. One of the staff, Lauren Oppelts, who is hearing impaired, said, “If you told me two years ago that I would be a server, I wouldn’t believe you. But now I have gained so much self-confidence. A lot of employees here have changed so much; it’s just mind-blowing.”24. Why did Stanko and Tyler Kammerle establish the cafe?A. To serve people with various abilities.B. To provide a place for family occasions.C. To instruct graduates in professional skills.D. To offer employment to youth with special needs.25. What was Stanko’s concern about taking Nick to a restaurant?A. The cost of dining out.B. The noisy customers in restaurants.C. The lack of an inclusive environment.D. The food allergies Nick is suffering from.26. How has working at the cafe affected Lauren Oppelts?A. She has taken to socializing.B. She has grown more positive.C. She has become experienced in cooking.D. She has recovered from her hearing disability.27. Which of the following best describes Stanko?A. Caring and responsible.B. Ambitious and devoted.C. Determined and sensitive.D. Tough and reliable.CHumans visiting Mars will likely happen within the next 15 years. However, it will be a nine-month journey one way. And dehydrated (脱水的) food for space missions, which is lessnutritious than fresh food and difficult to pack too much, isn’t ideal for feeding humans in the long term. Finding a way to feed humans on Mars is, therefore, critical before anyone steps on the Red Planet.A recent study offered a practical method for growing nutrient-rich vegetables by drawing upon an ancient farming technique, intercropping, used by the Mayans centuries ago. Intercropping, as opposed to monocropping, consists of multiple plants being grown together in the same fields.Researchers compared three different crops — tomatoes, carrots and peas — in Mars-like soil called regolith, soil and river sand, all by monocropping and intercropping. The researchers believed they would complement each other. Tomatoes provide climbing support for peas and shade for carrots, while peas fix nitrogen (氮) in soil by turning it into food for plants. Carrots, in turn, improve water and nutrient intake. There were 60 pots of plants in total in Mars-like greenhouses. In all three soil types, all the crops grew. Tomatoes did especially well in the intercropping regolith. However, the peas and carrots were not fans of sharing a pot with tomatoes in the regolith, producing decreased yields. There’re several possible reasons. Tomatoes are “heavy feeders” likely taking nutrients from the peas and carrots. Additionally, the bacteria working together with peas for nitrogen-fixing couldn’t survive in the regolith, resulting in the peas not being able to fix nitrogen for neighboring crops. This study, however, is still promising to researchers, as they’ve come up with ways to adjust the regolith. Besides, intercropped plants did better in the river sand than monocropped plants, proving intercropping would be beneficial to agriculture on Earth as well, especially in places where soil is becoming sandier. Not just astronauts on Mars, but many communities on Earth have plenty to learn from the Mayans.28. Why is farming a vital requirement for exploring Mars?A. It ensures an increased yield of food on Mars.B. It provides a source of relaxation for astronauts.C. It supplies astronauts with fresh and nutritious food.D. It tests the effects of Martian soil on Earth-based crops.29. What does the underlined word “complement” in paragraph 3 mean?A. Isolate.B. Supply.C. Reply.D. Harm.30. What may cause the decreased pea and carrot yields in the regolith?A. The peas failed to fix nitrogen.B. The tomatoes took up too much space.C. They were sensitive to the Mars-like soil.D. They were not exposed to enough sunlight.31. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Mars: the New Frontier for Agricultural InnovationB. The Advantages and Challenges of Growing Crops on MarsC. Intercropping Helps Sustainable Martian Agriculture Come TrueD. Agriculture on Mars Is Possible Thanks to Mayan Farming PracticesDWhat’s in a name? Quite a lot, actually. It is an important part of human identity. It turns out, however, that it is not only humans who use names. It has long been known that African elephants are very social creatures with highly developed brains. They make all sorts of sounds from low rumblings, barely audible to the human ear, to loud trumpeting sounds. It was these sounds, and his knowledge of dolphin behavior where a dolphin will copy somebody else’s signature whistle in order to get their attention that led Dr. Mickey Pardo, a professor at Cornell University, to try and figure out if any of those sounds were names. In order to confirm this Pardo and his colleagues had artificial intelligence (AI) analyze, the recordings of 469 rumbling noises made by wild African elephants from Kenya between the years 1986 and 2022. They hoped that the recordings would contain identifying information, that is to say, a name, for the elephant the rumbling call was made to. The AI identified 469 distinct calls. The researchers then went out into the field. They worked with 17 elephants, mostly female, to see whether they reacted to the recorded sound of their own names. Amazingly, the elephants seemed to know when they were being called and both replied quickly and approached the loudspeaker when they heard recordings that included the distinct call that referred to them. What’s interesting is that many of the names seemed to be called by mothers addressing their young. In addition, adult elephants used these distinct calls more often than young ones. This may indicate that name calling is a skill that takes some time to learn for youngelephants.Unfortunately, it’s unclear which exact part of the rumbling calls indicated the specific name. Knowing that information would open up a whole new world in terms of our understanding of elephants and their social structure.“Do they ever use somebody’s name when they’re not there?” Pardo wondered. Whatever the case, this is still big news, and an important reminder that humans are more similar to our animal relatives than they are different.32. What did Dr. Mickey Pardo’s study focus on?A. The meanings of a variety of elephant sounds.B. The AI analysis of recordings of elephant sounds.C. The similarity between elephant and dolphin communication.D. The identification of specific calls referring to individual elephants.33. How did the elephants respond to the recorded sound?A. They ignored it.B. They approached it.C. They tried to imitate it.D. They attacked the loudspeaker.34. What does the study suggest about the use of specific calls among elephants?A. It is used by elephants of all ages.B. It is a skill that young elephants master quickly.C. It may be a learned skill that develops over time.D. It is only used by adult elephants to address young ones.35. What can be concluded from the study?A. Elephants are good at social skills.B. Elephants can use names to call each other.C. AI played a great role in translating elephant calls.D. Elephants can recognize recordings of various sounds.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Because in some ways, it is. Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves. And that’s only natural: most of us have been taught from a you ng age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistak es. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes—at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably eno ugh times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious r eaction.Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think ab out it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make l earning possible; they make growth and improvement possible. By trial and error—trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistake s—we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceili ng of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.Think about how we learn: we don’t just consume information a bout something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don’t just read about painting, or writing, or computer programm ing, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them ri ght away. Instead, you get information about something, from r eading or from another person or from observing, then you mak e mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those m istakes, until you’ve pretty much learned how to do something. That’s how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new—because if you succeed at something, it’s probably something y ou already knew how to do. You haven’t really grown much fro m that success—at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it’s a good jour ney.So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, th en you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that ma ke a world of brilliance possible.6. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.B. Because it’s a natural part in our life.C. Because we’ve been taught so from a young age.D. Because mistakes have ruined many people’s careers.7. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistak es?A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.B. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.C. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.8. The underlined word “toddler” in Paragraph 6 probably mean s .A. a small child learning to walkB. a kindergarten child l earning to drawC. a primary pupil learning to readD. a school teenager le arning to write9. We can learn from the passage that .A. most of us can really grow from successB. growing and improving are based on mistakesC. we learn to make mistakes by trial and errorD. we read about something and know how to do it right away 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
