Passage 6

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I

always __1__ such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between "being a writer" and writing. In most

cases these individuals are dreaming of __2__ and fame, not

the long hours alone at a typewriter. "You’ve got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer."

The reality is that writing is a __3__, private and

poorpaying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there

are thousands more whose longing is never __4__. When I left

a 20-year career in the US. Coast Guard to become a freelance

writer(自由撰稿人), I had no __5__ at all. What I did have

was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was __6__and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and

felt like a __7__ writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to __8__ myself. It was so hard to sell a

story that __9__ made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to

write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to

be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would

keeo putting my dream to the test--even though it meant

living with __10__and fear of failure. This is the Shadow

land of hope, and anyone with a dream learn to live there.

A) barely B) genuine C) rewarded D) doubt

E) lonely F) poverty G) persuade H) prospects

I) uncertainty J)impossibly K) encourage L)awarded

M) alone N)wealth O)cold

可选项有prospects和wealth,但由dreaming of 与第二段中The reality is... poor-paying可推知,那些想当作家的人梦想的是金钱和名誉,而不是前途,故排除prospects而选wealth。

6.选O)。it指代的是apartment building,从had no bathroom

的作家”,由前面提到的to become a freelance writer

可选项有doubt,persuade,encourage,但由still hadn’t gotten a break"在

9.选A)。

10.选I)。 由fear of

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I

always K)encourage such people, but I also explain that

there’s a big difference between "being a writer" and

writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of

N)wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a

typewriter.(these individuals指代的是Many a young people。) "You’ve got to want to write,"I say to them, "not want to be

a writer."

The reality is that writing is a E)lonely, private and

poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there

are thousands more whose longing is never C)rewarded.(kissed

When I left a 20-year career in the US. Coast Guard to

become a freelance writer(自由撰稿人), I had no H)prospects

at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in

a New York apartment building. (What I did... my room in...。 It didn’t even matter that it was O)cold and had no bathroom. I

immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a

B)genuine writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a

break and began to D)doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a

story that A)barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted

to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would

keep putting my dream to the test----even though it meant

living with I)uncertainty and fear of failture.(put... to the

This is the Shadow land of hope, and

anyone with a dream learn to live there.

“Free play has been introduced in someJapanese 如2005年1月份考题:

kindergartens in order to”, 本题通过“free play”,“some Japanese kindergartens”反映了原文考查对象,题干内容比较具体,属于细节分析。又如2005年6月份出现的题目:“What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves? 如“What did the handball player do when he was not allowed a time out to change his gloves? What was confirmed by the Boston University Medical Center’s study?

2015年英语四级阅读模拟试题及答案 (精品试卷一) Section C Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A ),B., C.and D ). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage. People's tastes in recreation differ widely. At a recent festival of pop-music in the Isle of Wight, crowds of teenagers flocked to listen to their favorite singers and musicians. They went with single railway tickets and slept in the open, a very risky thing to do in the climate of Britain, even in August. They were packed together like sardines for four days. There were innumerable thieves, a gang of roughs tried several times to break things up, and police were everywhere. At the end of the festival many young fans found themselves broke, with no money left, and they had difficulty in getting back home. Most people would consider these conditions a nightmare of discomfort; the fans appeared to enjoy it all enormously. Even in the overcrowded United Kingdom there are large tracts of open un-spoilt country, where people with more traditional tastes can go for quiet, and for the sense of freedom they derive from contact with nature. In the national parks especially, modern development of housing and industry is strictly controlled. Visitors may walk for miles through landscape of the greatest beauty and wildness, and often of considerable historic or scientific interest. Along the coasts of some of the maritime counties, public pathways have been created; these paths stretch for many miles along cliffs that look out on the Atlantic Ocean or the English Channel. Another path, lying inland, goes along the range of mountains in the north of England. It is called the Pennine Way. Here, the long-distance waller and the nature-lover can find much to enjoy, without feeling disturbed by large numbers of their fellows.

It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyse and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher. Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every

Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of obergrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseaed or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but itis a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the desease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurs and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts yu make will bleed. If this does happen,it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1.Pruning should be done to ______. a.make the tree grow taller

Nature offsets this irritation by producing more and fluid which covers the eyeball. The fluid coversthe eyeball in increasing quantity until vision blurs, then is obsured, and the result is total, even though temporary, snowblindness. Experiments led the Army to a simple method of overcoming this problem. Scouts ahead of a main body of troops are

It is said that the Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if the case is such, he does in fact differ from the inhabitants of most countries of the world today. In the past our own blocks of flats have been associated with the lower-income groups and they have lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts from top to bottom, and so on, as well as such details, important notwithstanding, as easy facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish and storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor, playgrounds for children on the top of the buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as for as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their case primarily on the assumption that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. The latter ignores the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time of the journeys to work for the suburban resident. 71. We can infer from the passage that________ A) English people, like most people in other countries, dislike living in flats B) People in most countries of the world today are not opposed to living in flats C) People in Britain are forced to move into high blocks of flats D) Modern flats still fail to provide the necessary facilities for living 72. What is said about the blocks of flats built in the past in Britain ? A) They were mostly inhabited by people who did not earn much. B) They were usually not large enough to accommodate big families. C) They were sold to people before necessary facilities were installed. D) They provided playground for children on the top of the buildings 73. The word “rage”(Line 10) means “______” A) be ignored B) develop with great force C) encourage people greatly D) be in fashion 74. Some people oppose the building of flats because________ A) the living expenses for each individual family are higher B) it involves higher cost compared with the building of houses C) they believe people like to live in houses with gardens D) the disposal of rubbish remains a problem for those living in flats 75.The author mentions that people who live in suburban houses________ A) do not have access to easy facilities because they live away from the city B) have to pay a lot of money to employ people to do service work C) take longer time to know each other because they are a scattered community
