North America black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.

In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, USA, catch bears and use drugs

to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.

But in Minnesota, USA, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers’ voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives.

In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.

I never saw my father home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a “night out with the boys”. He had no hobbies but just took care of his family.

For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always interested in my life-how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.

Nine years ago when I bought my first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked, was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run (经营), and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.

Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set(秋千)for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him, But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.

The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.

The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(发誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him a nd really get to know him.

I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.

In the years since his death I have learned much about my father, and even more about every single day.

61.We know from the reading that the father_____.

A.seemed to be a little different B.had no time to phone her as usual

C.became interested in church D.had forgotten to discuss some things with her

64.In the reading the underlined phrase ‘get to know him’ most probably means_____.

A.get him to know her B.know more about him

阅读短文,根据题目要求完成各小题。

Have you ever stayed up late one night? Did you feel tired the next day? Did you feel bad-tempered? It is because your body missed its sleep! So why does a good night’s sleep make you feel better?

Scientists have studied sleep to find the answer to this question. They have found some different reasons.

First, sleep helps your body stay healthy. 76 Even though you are sleeping, your body is still active. Sleep gives your body a chance to repair itself.

Sleep also helps your body to rest. How? Your body does not need as much energy when it slows down. The beat of your heart and your breathing rate b ecome slower, which 77 lowers your body’s energy level. Your body needs rest after a busy day.

Sleep is imp ortant for your brain, too. During the day your brain gathers information. At night whi le you are sleeping, your brain reviews everything that you did during the day. It saves some of your experiences so you can remember them. Some scientists think all this reviewing causes you to dream.

What happens if you do not have enough sleep? People who miss too much sleep have trouble paying attention. They make more mistakes in their work. Scientists believe that people who miss more than three days of sleep may become sick and even start seeing something that is not really there.

Students need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep each night. What can you do to help give your body a good night’s sleep?

Ways to help you sleep

◆Run and play outside during the day.

◆Drink a glass of milk before going to bed.

◆Go to bed on time.

◆Read a book in bed.

◆Have a dark, quiet room.

Follow these steps and you will begin to feel relaxed and happy. N othing else will help your

body like a good night’s sleep.

What do airports and Disney world have in common?

They both serve millions of people every year and everyone must s 81 in line before they can get on a ride.

But there are other similarities: airports and Disney theme parks operate parking and transportation services, r 82 , and shops. And both employ teams of workers. And there’s not any downtime in the business day.

While workers at the Magic Kingdom usually get high marks for manners and customer service, the staffs (职员) at U.S airports s 83 do. So when Miami International Airport decided to improve its service to passengers, it turned t 84 the Disney company for help.

Walt Disney Co.’s Disney Institute(学院)is well known for the customer service training it provides to government agencies, major companies, and organizations of all s 85 . Miami International Airport is the first airport to sign up.

So far,400 Miami airport employees have attended classes. What have they learned? “Although not everything that goes w 86 at the airport is our fault, it is our problem.”says Dickie Davis, the airport’s Customer Service Division director. “So it’s important to make a personal connection. If someone has l 87 their baggage, or can’t find their gate or the car park and meets an employee who’s kind and tries to help, it can take the edge off. It’s all about manners and niceness.”

And perhaps a little b 88 about the uniforms. The airport’s spokesman says travelers will be able to e 89 find all those nice employees by their Florida-themed shirts with the airport’s large palm tree logo on the b 90 . “We’re not a theme park,” he says, “but we can take some of the Disney magic and put that here at the airport.”

Learn to express thanks

Good morning, boys and girls!

The topic of my speech today is “Learn to express thanks”. We find most Middle School

students don’t show any sense of “Thanks” after they enter the society. They think that they are certain of eating well and wearing fashionable clothes.

As Middle School students, we should learn to express thanks. We should thank our parents for supporting us to go to school. And we should express thanks to our hardworking teachers who teach us much knowledge. Besides, our friends always give us encouragement and help.

In a word, we are lucky in everything. But we should learn to express thanks.

In the future, I should study harder to repay our parents and teachers. I should go to my friends to share their happiness and sadness.

Thank you for your listening!
