The dollar is continuing to weaken against most currencies. The dollar’s currently trading at one hundred and twenty-four point one eight Japanese yen and at once deutchmark and fifty-four pfennigs. The pound is stronger at one dollar and eight-five point seven cents. After a week’s holiday in Tokyo share prices rose sharply as dealers reacted to the discount rate cut made just before the New Year break. The market strength was also attributed to Wall Street’s record highs seen last week. The Nikkei closed up eight hundred and seventeen point four one, at twenty-three thousand eight hundred and one point one eight, with trading limited to the morning session only.
