Britain’s most popular lie has been discovered, with one in four people admitting using “Sorry I had no signal” when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.

According to a recent survey people usually use this little white lie after they hit the “ignore” button when their mobile rang. The second most common fib is “I haven’t got any cash on me” when asked for money by beggars. Modern technology is a major excuse in many of our lies with “I didn’t get your text” in 18th, “Our

server was down” in 20th and “My battery died” in 26th place.

Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year. One in three Britons have lied about their weight, a quarter have fibbed about the amount of debt they are in and 30 percent have bent the truth about the amount of exercise they do.

Almost a quarter of men have told their wife or girlfriend they look good in an outfit, despite thinking the opposite. More than 40 percent of women have admitted lying about how much new clothes actually cost while 30 percent have fibbed about how much they’ve had to drink.

Three quarters of people think women are better liars. The research found 46 per cent of girls have been caught lying, compared to 58 of men. Men tell the most fibs, coming out with five every day compared to women who lie just three times.

A spokesman for one poll, which carried out the research of 4,300 adults, said, “As a nation we are obsessed with trying to be nice and not upsetting people. Often little white lies are used to cover what we ac tually want to say.”

“Most of these were considered either completely harmless or necessary depending on the situation in which they are delivered.” He added, “It was sad to see a string of compliments in the top 50, but once again in many cases perhaps it is better to compliment with a lie than destroy someone with the truth.”

A 49-year-old homeless man called Dave Tally in Arizona found a bag full of cash and made a great decision: He would return it.

Tally was in debt, jobless and had lost his driver’s license. Most nights, he slept at a church-based homeless shelter run by Tempe Community Action Agency. During the day, with nowhere else to go, he walked the streets. That is where he found a backpack

full of cash, $3,300.

The $3,300 could have gotten Tally out of his hole. He thought about the things he could pay for: a cheap apartment and a bike. The wish list was not hard to make for a man who had spent six years homeless. But he decided that was the wrong thing to do. So, he tracked down the owner of the cash, a college kid named Bryan Belanger who had planned to use the money to buy a car to replace one he’d lost in an accident. Meeting Belanger and hearing the student thank and praise him for his honesty and kindness made Tally feel good about himself. He hadn’t had that feeling in a while. When word got out that Tally had turned in the cash instead of keeping it, the national media came looking for him. Donations poured in, and Tally suddenly found himself with $10,000. But he was determined not to waste it.

He began paying off his bills, clearing up his driving records, and taking the long road back. He even moved into a no-frills(简朴的)apartment across from the shelter as “a remainder of where I’ve been and where I’m not going back again.”

One year later, Tally landed his “dream job”, managing a community garden. Recently, Tally started managing a program that allows people who are homeless to volunteer in the garden.

36. Where did Dave Tally find the backpack full of cash?

B. In a cheap apartment.

C. In a church-based homeless shelter.

D. In Tempe Community Action Agency.

37. The underlined part “out of his hole” in Paragraph3 probably means “_________”.

A. out of reach

B. out of control

C. to walk out of the shelter

D. to get out of his bad situation

38. Why did Dave Tally return the money to its owner?

A. He would soon get a satisfying job.

B. He could receive an award from the loser.

C. He preferred to collect donations from others.

D. He thought more of others than himself.

39. After Dave Tally’s good deed became known to others, he ______.

A. was offered a job by a charity

B. lived in a splendid apartment

C. was interviewed by the media

D. had an exam for his driving license

40. Which of the following is TRUE of Dave Tally?

A. He bought a bike for himself.

B. He had no work for a long time.

C. He had a large family to raise.

D. He missed the life at the shelter. C

Two feet tall, the imperial woodpecker (帝啄木鸟)of Mexico was once the largest woodpecker in the world. But aggressive logging and even poisoning by the logging companies in its Sierra Madre habitat are thought to have driven the bird into extinction sometime in the mid-20th century. For decades it was believed that this star of the bird world had disappeared without a trace, with no photograph or film to document its existence. But this week, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (CLO) announced that a film was indeed available for viewing by the public.

The discovery of the woodpecker film dates back to the 1900s, when Martjan Lammertink,

a woodpecker expert and researcher at CLO, found a reference to a film in which the bird appeared in an old letter in Cornell’s files. The letter mentioned that Dr. William L. Rhein, a dentist and amateur bird enthusiast, had shot a home movie of the bird in 1956. Dr. Lammertink tracked down Dr. Rhein in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and they watched it together.

The film remained in Dr. Rhein’s possession until he died in 1999. In 2005, a nephew donated it to Cornell. In the years after, researchers had the film digitally restored and then traveled to Mexico to locate the site where it was shot, which had since been heavily logged. The idea was to witness what had happened to the land and to see if any traces of the imperial woodpecker could be found. None remained. In the 16-millimeter color film, the woodpecker goes about its business at a distance, like a celebrity being unknowingly walked by an eager fan. In poorly lighted scenes, the bird flies on majestic wings. In a way, it’s an unfor gettable performance—

a reminder of life lost and the stupidity of man.

41. What made the imperial woodpecker die out?

A. The shortage of food.

B. A spreading disease.

C. Sharp climate change.

D. The effect of human activity.

42. The movie of the imperial woodpecker ________.

A. is about a century old

B. was made with the aid of CLO

C. became known about 20 years ago

D. was shot by an expert and researcher

B. shoot another perfect movie

C. find the living imperial woodpecker

D. seek more information about the bird

44. The author writes the last paragraph mainly to show _______.

A. how beautiful the bird was

B. how poorly the movie was shot

C. what environment the bird lived in

D. what regrets the bird left us humans

45. How was the movie first discovered?

A. Rhein invited Lammertink to his house.

B. Rhein’s nephew wrote to CLO about it.

C. Lammertink came across an aged letter.

D. Lammertink heard of it while in Mexico. D

When Maxi Sopo learned that the police in Seattle,Washington, were investigating him for stealing, he escaped to Mexico. For months the police could not find his exact location— unti l they discovered his Facebook Profile. Although Sopo’s profile was private, his list of Facebook friends was not. Using that list, authorities were able to find and arrest him.

Gone are the days when the only way to catch a criminal was with “wanted posters” and crime reports. Today, when police want to catch a suspect, they turn to Facebook for clues about the person’s whereabouts. Some police departments are also turning to the community for help by creating their own Facebook pages. There, officers post photos and alerts so members of the community can see and respond to them. There are a lot of people out there that want to help the police, but maybe they don’t have an outlet(渠道). This gives them that.

Facebook is also helping the victims help themselves. When someone stole a truck

from Shawn Beaton’s dealership in Texas, Beaton posted photos of the truck on Facebook and asked people to inform the police if they saw it. The next morning he received a call: Someone had seen the truck and identified it from his photos. Thanks to Facebook, it’s becoming easier to find and catch criminals. When criminals are active on Facebook, they’re unknowingly leaving clues for police to use. And when police and victims spread the word about a crime over Facebook, it means that more people can contribute to the search. With the right tip, police just might be able to make an arrest.

46. How does the writer show the use of Facebook in Para.1?

A. By giving an example.

B. By analyzing causes.

C. By making comparisons.

D. By asking questions.

47. What does the underlined word “this” in Para. 2 refer to?

A. The wanted poster.

B. The crime report.

C. The clue provided by community.

D. The police station’s Facebook page.

48. What can we infer from Para. 3?

A. The thief escaped, and the truck was destroyed.

B. The thief was arrested , and the truck was returned.

C. Shawn Beaton received a call from the thief.

D. Shawn Beaton was unable to find the thief himself.

49. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Wanted posters are the best way to catch a criminal.

B. Facebook makes catching a criminal easier.

C. Criminal usually destroy clues they have left on Facebook.

D. Facebook can’t help arrest more criminals.

50. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Victims fighting back

B. Several new ways to help police

C. Facebook helping solve crimes

D. Criminals leaving clues on Facebook

I believe in the power of the well-written thank-you letters. My sister and I were taught at a very early age to write thank-you letters for birthday and Christmas gifts. We carefully copied addresses from our mom’s address book into our own pretty little books. We wrote our letters on December 26th at the latest every year. It was an important activity in our home, and it has turned me into an eager thank-you-letter writer as an adult. Nearly every Monday morning I sit down with my favorite pen and write a few thank-you letters. I write them for parties I attend, dinners I’m fed, or just to thank a friend for listening. Several years ago I even sent my mom a thank-you letter to thank her for teaching me to count my blessings on paper.

Sending letters of thanks out into the world has made me more appreciative of the love, support, and kindness I receive daily. I am more motivated to do kind things for others when I feel appreciated, and I feel that I keep kindness and generosity living by genuinely expressing my thanks.

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. 高三英语考试题

高二英语 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) A Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse. Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour. 1.Halley made his discovery________. B Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away. Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place. Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away. 5. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of . A. loud noises B. some crops C. video cameras D. angry bees 6. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy . A. works by herself in Africa B. needs to test more elephant groups C. has stopped elephants eating crops D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms 7. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive? A. To record the sound of bees. B. To make a video of elephants. C. To see if elephants would run away. D. To find out more about the behavior of bees. 8. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees. B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place. C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them. D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.

Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
