Every object tells a story. Even the most ordinary objects can pr esent to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so unusual. Such is the case with an old leather(皮革的) shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique(独特的) about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn’t need in order to travel lighter?

Over 100, 000 people with “go ld fever” made this trip hoping to become rich. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of hunger and exposure to the cold weather.

The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks, each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least

40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been

a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.

60. The ordinary woman’s leather shoe is considered unusual because _______.

A. it was an important clue to life in the past

A. they would not die of hunger and cold

B. the army would have enough food for fighting a war

C. they would change these goods with the Eskimos

D. the supplies would make Alaska rich

63. No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, _______.

A. she must have lived a happy life

B. she certainly dropped the shoe on purpose

C. her adventurous spirit is definitely admired

D. her other shoes were equally fashionable

Americans spend their free time in many ways.

America is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football.Millions of Americans watch their favorite sports on television. They also like to play in community orchestras(管弦乐队),make their own films or recordings,go camping, visit museums, attend lectures, travel, garden, read, and join in hundreds of other activities. The people also enjoy building things for their homes, sewing their own clothes, even making their own photographs. They do these things for fun as wel l as for economy. But as much as Americans enjoy their free time, the country is at the same time a “self-improvement”country.More than 25 million adults continue their education, chiefly by going to school in the evening, during their own free time,at their own expense.Added to the

time spent on personal activities,Americans also devote a great amount of their time to the varied needs of their communities(社区).Many hospitals, schools, libraries, museums, parks, community centers, and organizations that assist the poor depend on the many hours citizens devote to these activities, often without any pay. Why do they do it?

There are several answers. The idea of cooperating and sharing responsibility with one another for the good of all is as old as the country itself.

When the country was first founded in 1776,it was necessary for the settlers to work together to live. They had crossed dangerous seas and risked(冒险) all they had in their struggle for political and religious freedom(宗教自由).There remains among many Americans a distrust of central government.People still prefer to do things themselves within their communities, rather than give the government more control.

Sometimes people offer their time because they wish to do something for which no money is paid,to do something that will be of benefit to the whole community. It is true that some people use their leisure because they are truly interested in the work;or they are learning from the experience.

No matter what the reason is,hundreds of thousands of so-called leisure hours are put into hard, unpaid work on one or another community need.

67.This passage is mainly about ________ .

A.why America is a country of sports

B.how Americans spend their free time

C.why America is a“self-improvement”country

D.how Americans are devoted to their community activities

68.The writer mentions the foundation of the country in order to indicate(暗示) ________.A.the early history of America

B.the American people’s determination to live

C.the reason for Americans’ willingness to cooperate and share responsibility

D.the American people’s love for freedom

69.Which of the following best explains the meaning of the underlined word“leisure”?

A.work time B.energy C.effort D.spare time

70.What can we infer from the text?

A.The first settlers left their hometown for political and religious reasons.

B.Many Americans don’t trust the central government.

C.American people enjoy building things for their homes just for fun.

D.Americans continue their education at their own expense.

Plant a Tree in Your Community(社区)

Almost everyone loves trees, but do you know that tree can help sick people recover faster?

It’s true. According to the International Society of Arboriculture(树木培植), hospital patients have been shown to recover faster when they are given a view with trees. Also, while trees certainly benefit any landscape, whether lining streets, decorating urban areas, or growing naturally in the forest, they are actually important in our daily lives.

Trees improve the quality of the air around us by absorbing dust and other particles(颗粒物). Their leaves also absorb harmful gases before we have a chance to take them in. They also protect

us from the sun, rai n, hail(冰雹), and snow, which can quickly damage unprotected homes. Even better, they give off clean oxygen for us to breathe.

Trees make economic sense. A home surrounded by trees costs less to cool and heat. Neighborhoods with trees are often several degrees cooler in summer than those in similar climates that don’t have trees. In winter, trees can keep houses warmer by blocking strong winds. Also, less water is needed to water grass and gardens in tree-shaded areas where the sun isn’t constantly shining.

Besides that, trees can further improve privacy, block unpleasant views, and increase the value of your home. Unfortunately, these days, construction projects tend to wipe out all the trees

in an area before creating new neighborhoods and buildings. That’s why it’s more important than ever to plant a tree in your community.

Check out the National Arbor Day Foundation online at https://www.doczj.com/doc/5717415847.html, to find out more about planting a tree in your area or how to volunteer in an urban center. You can even donate funds to help the foundation replant trees in New Orleans. Trees also make great gifts. The Arbor Day Foundation can tell you how to plant a tree in someone’s name as a gift, donate a tree to honor someone, or memorialize a loved one by planting a tree. Make Arbor Day a true holiday this year. Plant a tree!

Dear Editor:

I am writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about whether it is necessary to include an oral test in the English examination.

About 60% of the students are against the idea of having an oral test in the exam. They hold the view that students may not get just results as an oral test in the exam is so subjective. Many students cannot speak English well enough and so it is not the right time for them to attend such tests.

On the other hand about 40% of the students think spoken English should be tested in the exam because speaking is an important language skill. A test without spoken English is not a complete one. Since spoken English is part of the text that students must s tudy, why shouldn’t it be part of the test? What’s more, oral tests can promote students’ English study.

M: The Public Library? But there are so many public libraries in London. Which one do you want to go to?

W: The nearest one, of course.

M: That’s rather far away, too. You’d better take a bus. Take the No. 7 bus to the zoo, then change to the No. 9 bus and get off at the end.

W: And where’s the No. 7 bus-stop, please?

M: Go straight down the street, and turn left at the traffic lights. Then take the second turning on the right, and you’ll find the bus-stop near the corner. You can’t miss it.

W: Thank you very much.

M: Not at all.

W: I see. Fine. When do you want to go?

M: I’d like to leave in mid-January if my passport is ready by then.

W: That shouldn’t be difficult. Why don’t you phone me about January 10th? I should be able to give you an answer then.

M: Thank you.

Text 8

W: Hi, Martin. How are you?

M: Fine, but busy. We’ve got some exams next week--remember?

W: I know. How much work did you do last night?

M: None. I went to the cinema. What about you?

W: I had no time last night. It was my sister’s birthday, so we all went out to dinner.

M: Have you done any work this morning?

W: Some, but not a lot. Anyway, I rang to ask you something. Do you know where is my physics book?

M: I’ve got no idea, but you can borrow mine if you want.

W: Thanks.

W: Did you enjoy it?

M: Very much. It was one of the most exciting tours I’ve ever made. Was this your first trip to China?

W: Oh, no, I go almost every year. Unfortunately, it’s always on space-related business, so I’ve only seen the inside of conference rooms and factories. I haven’t had the chance to visit any sites. M: Oh, it’s a great pity !

A Our eating habits are very important for good health. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice-cream than meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad for the stomach if we eat them at the end of a meal. But if we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite( 胃口 ). It is important for us to eat our meals at the same time every day. When we feel hungry, it is said that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether a person was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the person could swallow the bread, it was a sign that he was telling the truth. Though this seems rather strange and foolish, it is indeed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man worrying about something has much difficulty in swallowing anything dry because he is worrying and he loses his appetite and does not want to eat. 1.We should develop good eating habits because we all want to ______.
