1859年，英国哲学家、社会学家斯宾塞提出了一个著名命题：“什么知识最有价值?”这像一颗炸弹扔在了教育阵营里，触动了占据各种立场的人士的神经，一场争论从那时至今
未休。教育关乎知识，知识关乎课程，课程研究正是在这里正式拉开帷幕。
在当时，斯宾塞对古典学科占据学校课程的主导地位极为不满，于是，针对社会上重虚饰、轻实用的知识价值观进行了批判。他依据五种人类活动，即直接保全自己的活动、从获得生活必需品而间接保全自己的活动、教育子女的活动、与维持正常社会政治关系有关的活动、在生活的闲暇时间满足爱好和感情的各种活动，确立了按价值大小排列的各类知识。这些知识的最高目标是，有利于人的完满生活。在此基础上，斯宾塞最后得出结论：“什么知识最有价值?一致的答案就是科学。”
在当前新的时代背景下，我们应该给出什么样的答案呢?
在这里，我的任务是尝试回答这一问题：“什么知识最有价值?”在回答之前，先来确
认在这个问题中，“价值”是对谁而言。
知识具有对个人和对社会的双重价值。对于个人，知识具有心智训练价值、自我实现价值、人格发展的价值，即增加智慧、解决问题、提升人格的价值;对于社会，知识具有生产
力价值和促进社会文明的价值。鉴于社会是由个人构成的，因此，提升个人素质，社会整体素质即获得提升。我的思路是，将知识的价值着眼于个人，才可能获得社会的长远、可持续
的进步与文明。而那种用个人幸福和社会安宁来换取社会经济的一时繁荣的，是一种急功近利式的知识观，也必然导致一种急功近利式的课程观。我们拒绝一种线性的、封闭的、工艺学取向的课程研究，尽力把目光从教育本身投向课程以外广阔的社会文化背景，投向被课程遮蔽的每一位教师和学习者的内心。这也正是20世纪70年代以后兴起的解释学、建构主义、后现代主义等流派所关注的焦点之所在。在这里，“什么知识最有价值”这一经典性的
课程问题，不只是一个教育上的问题，同时也是社会的、政治的问题，此时探究课程问题，
就需要批判性地考察意识形态和政治、经济对人的发展的影响。
我认为，成就个人幸福，以至成就人类幸福的知识，是最有价值的知识。
无论对于一个人，还是对于整个社会，掌握相当于生产力的钾识，可以喻为是做蛋糕，
掌握的知识越具有生产力，这个蛋糕做的就越大，但是，人生和社会的目的就是做大蛋糕吗?不，是文明、是进步、是自由、是幸福。做蛋糕是为了享用这美食，因此，在当下这个社会
