Recently, one of my best friends, whom I‘ve shared just about everything with since the first day of kindergarten, spent the weekend with me.Since I moved to a new town several years ago, we‘ve both always looked forward to the few times a year when we can see each other.Over the weekend, we spent hours and hours, staying up late into the night, talking about the people she was hanging around with. She started telling me stories about her new boyfriend, about how he experimented with drugs and was into other self-destructive behavior.I was blown away! She told me how she had been lying to her parents about where she was going and even stealing out to see this guy because they didn‘t want her around him.No matter how hard I tried to tell her that she deserved better, she didn‘t believe me.Her self-respect seemed to have disappeared.

I tried to convince her that she was ruining her future and heading for big trouble.I felt like I was getting nowhere.I just couldn‘t believe that she really thought it was acceptable to hang with a bunch of losers, especially her boyfriend.

By the time she left, I was really worried about her and exhausted by the experience. It had been so frustrating, I had come close to telling her several times during the weekend that maybe we had just grown too far apart to continue our friendship, but I didn‘t.I put the power of friendship to the final test. We‘d been friends for far too long.I had to hope that she valued me enough to know that I was trying to save her from hurting herself.I wanted to believe that our friendship could conquer anything.

A few days later, she called to say that she had thought long and hard about our conversation, and then she told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend.I just listened on the other end of the phone with tears of joy running down my face.It was one of the truly rewarding moments in my life.Never had I been so proud of a friend.

To be able to motivate oneself, or self-motivate, occurs when a person has the willingness to do something and is internally(内在地) motivated to do it.

Sometimes it‘s very difficult to get ourselves moving. The natural tendency is to postpone.Life just seems to get in the way! There is a job to go to, groceries to do, television to watch—whoops! I guess we get pretty good at finding excuses to escape getting started on goals like an exercise routine or reading a new book. The fact is that we are creatures of routine and habit. So what can we do to motivate ourselves to accomplish our goals?

Here are some tips on how to get moving:

Decide what you want. It‘s hard to motivate an aimless mind.Set a goal and decide how you are going to go about it.Then break it down into smaller sections so it‘s easier to handle and less overwhelming.(势不可挡)

Keep track of your progress.Keep a log or journal where you can measure how much you have accomplished.Looking at it can also motivate you to keep pushing ahead.Post motivating pictures or slogans within your sight. It is always inspiring to see pictures of people who have accomplished what you‘re going for.It makes it attainable and realistic.Likewise, little slogans like ―go for it‖ or ―just do it‖ can give you the little support you need.

Sometimes we forget what we set out to do and a little reminder is all we need to be revitalized (激活) and focus on the end result. If you remind yourself to go for the desired promotion, it will re-establish why you are doing what you‘re doing.

Make it a habit.Once you have accomplished your objective, e.g.becoming an early riser, keep it up so that it‘s second nature to you and you don‘t have to think about it anymore.64.According to the author, some people fail to achieve their goals because ________.A.they don‘t have enough desire

B.their life is filled with routine work

C.they benefit from the force of habit

D.they naturally put off forming new habits

65.It can be inferred from the underlined sentence that ________.

A.self-motivation needs repeated self-reminding of one‘s goal

B.in modern society people tend to become forgetful

C.when we forget our goal, our life becomes meaningless

D.we can achieve our goal only by focusing on the end result

66.To get moving on your goal, you can do the following EXCEPT ________.A.keep a diary to clearly judge your distance to your goal

B.make self-improvement your second nature

C.forget your aim and revitalize yourself with slogans

Dear Economist,

My newly-wedded wife and I are deeply in love. There is, however, one issue that threatens the happiness of our marriage.I absolutely insist on shopping at Walmart. My wife, meanwhile, would rather avoid Walmart at all costs.

I have recently tried to convince her that not only does Walmart offer the lowest prices known to man, but that the chain is also a force for good―lower prices mean better standards of living for all consumers, increased global trade means a tighter-knit(紧密团结的) international community, and efficient operations translate into higher productivity growth for the economy. My wife complains about poor labour policies, the ―fact‖ that Walmart squeezes suppliers, and that it puts local shops out of business.

Who is right? Will our marriage survive?

Brian Gee Dear Brian,

I have to agree with you about Walmart.Jason Furman, then an economist at New York University, now an adviser to President Obama, famously argued in 2005 that Walmart was unwittingly (不知不觉地) a progressive success story. The chain‘s prices don‘t much affect me (I prefer Whole Foods) but Furman estimated that they benefited low-and-middle-income Americans to the sum of around $250 billion a year.

Walmart does not pay much, so it may depress wages. Then again, it may increase wages by offering jobs to the otherwise-unemployed.Either way, the benefits of low prices to Walmart shoppers far outweigh any seemingly reasonable costs to Walmart employees. And while it is true that Walmart employees tend to be poor, the same is true of Walmart shoppers.Armed with this information you can face your wife with confidence. You are sure to win the conversation. The divorce is likely to be more argued.

Economist

68.What concerns Brian Gee so much that he wrote the letter?

A.His wife refuses to shop at Walmart.

B.They are faced with a divorce.

C.They can‘t afford the costs of shopping at Walmart.

D.They are in conflict about shopping at Walmart.

69.Brian Gee‘s wife tends to hold the opinion that _________.

A.it is wrong for Walmart to depress its employees‘ wages

B.consumers‘ lives have improved thanks to Walmart

C.Walmart‘s business operation increases productivity in economy

D.Walmart‘s business increases global tr ade

70.What can be inferred from the reply letter?

A.Some employees accept the low pay to keep the job.

B.Walmart appeals to only poor consumers and poor employees.

C.Employees suffer from Walmart‘s low prices more than consumers.

D.Jason Furman, a New York University economist, spoke highly of Walmart.

The right pair of exercise shoes can do a lot to prevent discomfort and injuries, personal trainers say. Here are some shopping tips:

71 Depending on your workout, shoes designed for walking, running, tennis, cross-training or another specialty will provide the best support for your feet.

Shop when you normally exercise.Feet actually get bigger throughout the day, sometimes swelling up as much as a half-size by nighttime.72

Try them on.Never grab a pair of exercise shoes based only on the size of footwear you normally buy.Bring the type of socks you‘d wear to work out and go for a walk through the store.

73 You should be able to spread your toes out comfortably.Make sure there‘s about a half-inch of space between them and the front of the shoe. The back should fit snugly (warmly and comfortably) against your heel and not move up and down.If your feet are different sizes, buy based on the larger one.

Talk to an expert.Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride (步伐) and the shape of your feet.74

75 Many trainers recommend switching footwear every three to five months, if possible, to maintain(保持)proper cushioning and support.

One tip: if you have to tie your shoes very tightly to feel a good amount of support, they may be ready to go.

A.Think about how much you can afford to buy the workout shoes.

B.Consider your type of exercise.

C.Focus on fit.

D.So don‘t shop first thing in the morning if you often work out in the evening.

E.Pay more attention to new style shoes.

F.Replace worn shoes regularly.

G.Usually they can recommend the best shoes to guard against injuries.

I was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call.My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA Company.Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dropping from the bare trees that lined the

street.I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat.

There was no sign of a call box, nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask.I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant.

Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street.Next to it was the town‘s only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint.I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He was fat, and was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat.I could not see his face and he didn‘t raise his head at the sound of my footsteps.Carefully, I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait for my turn.It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the box call door.

Two University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine (疫苗)to fight against the HIV virus, which causes AIDS.The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune (免疫)system, rather than the complex aspects of the virus.

They theorize that if a key function of the body‘s immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine.

“To develop a new vaccine, we realized we first have to study and understand the immune system,‖ Lang said.

Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killer-like T-cells.A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune system‘s antibodies, which fight outside invaders(侵入物)such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them.

NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said.

The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center

is giving $ 300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding.

“If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,‖ Lang said.

Lang said that in best-case scenario(最好的情况),their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years.

The research to be carried out will focus on _______.

40.A.the immune system B.the test performed on mice C.NKT cells D.the HIV virus

History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery.A striking example is provided by Dr.Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist (药理学家)and winner of a Nobel Prize.Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏).A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row.The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on paper. But the next morning, he couldn‘t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the important experiment.Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.

Loewi‘s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions.Nervous feelings are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.

Being able to take advantage of dreams for solving is improved if you ―set‖ yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve.Bury yourself in the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams.Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure.About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.

44.The main idea of this passage is that _________.

A.very little is really known about the meaning of dreams

B.it is possible to ―catch‖ one‘s dream s by planning before going to sleep

C.dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one‘s problems

D.Loewi‘s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses

45.The first paragraph is mainly organized by _________.

A.classifying types of experiments

B.summarizing the work of one researcher

C.comparing and exploring historical cases

D.telling in time order about one man‘s research

46.If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have _________.A.asked someone else to do it B.thought it was a bad idea

C.tried it out on his own D.thought it was a wise idea

47.The author probably thinks that _________.

A.nervous feelings may stop someone thinking of useful ideas

B.dreaming is of very little value to most people

C.Loewi should not have conducted his experiment

D.college students should not try out dream experiments

D

Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have experienced an ―agricultural revolution‖.On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer.A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock (家畜)to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers.Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs.Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.

Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real ―mechanized hired hand‖ that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being.Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make shocking changes in farming before the end of the century.Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them.Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear (修剪)sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit.Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete change of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.

48.According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide _______.

A.how much money they can earn from their products

B.whether to plant a certain kind of crop

C.what livestock to raise

D.when to sell their products

49.Which of the following statements is true?

A.Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.

B.Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.

C.Both computers and robots have been in use on today‘s farms.

D.Students at agricultural colleges needn‘t take their normal agricultural courses.50.What is the best title for the whole passage?

A.Computer, Farmers‘ Best Friend

B.Farmers in The Future

C.The Agricultural Revolution

D.Computers and Robots

It is said that there are about 40,000 different kinds of jobs in the world.51

―Finding a job‖ is not the same as ―choosing a job‖.Many young people end up in a job which they are not suitable for.52 Here are a few steps to help you think about jobs which you might enjoy doing after school or university.

First, it is important to realize what kind of person you are, which special qualities make you different from everyone else and what you are interested in.53 If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse instead of a big dog, that is a skill.

Then ask yourself this question: in the following three areas ―skills with people, skills with information and skills with things ―which are your best skills?

After examining your skills, the next step is research. To find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers.54 Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking! 55

A.It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing.

B.Choosing the right one itself is a difficult job.

C.We must know what our ideal jobs are.

D.There is a difference between an interest and a skill.

E.Ask your friends about the work they do.

F.―Chance‖ may play a more important part than ―decision‖.

Stop wasting you time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings.Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born.Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the human mind.Success is a choice and not a chance. You can be a success only if you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing you self-esteem(自尊).Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over you life.People with low self-esteem do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are leaves tossed(摇摆)by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life.Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we consciously choose to accept and believe.Thoughts and beliefs cause everything. Our attitudes and actions are a result of habits existing in us over a period of time. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success depends upon our level of confidence. We are responsible for either forming good habits or kicking bad habits.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing(培育)the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible.Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

59.People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they________.A.are ready to change their minds

B.are easily affected by windy weather

C.don‘t have the power to face their fate

D.can‘t exercise control over themselves

60.It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that_________

A.whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes

B.developing confidence is the key to future success

C.thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind

D.setting our expectations is essential before taking action

61.The last paragraph serves as______.

A.the proof of the author‘s points B.the conclusion of the argument

C.an introduction to another topic D.a comparison between two views

62.Which is the best title for the text?

A.Success is a choice B.The secrets of success

C.Develop our confidence D.How to achieve success

C

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or sca n the websites you‘ve visited.Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

If fact, it‘s likely that some of these things have already happened to yo u.Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cup or a criminal.Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—21st century is the equal of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries(dividing line)are healthy, and that it‘s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread pieces you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like.In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think.Like it or not, increasingly we_live_in_a_world_where_you_simply_cannot_keep_

The key question is: Does that matter?

When opinion polls(民意测验)ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it.a survey found an overwhelming(very large)pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is ―slipping away, and that b others me.‖But people say one thing and do another.Only a tiny part of Americans change any behaviors in an effort t protect their privacy.Few people turn down a tollbooths(收费站)to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards.Privacy economist Alissanfro Acquisti has a series of tests that reveal that people will give personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cent-off coupon(优惠券).

But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It‘s like health; when you have it, you don‘t notice it.Only when it‘s gone do you wish you‘d done more to protect it.

In the age of reality television, success isn‘t the only way to the public eye.Failure can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong.

Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They‘ll publish a record, titled ―The True Idol‖ on April 6.The idol is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version of Ricky Martin‘s ―She Bangs‖ on the television show ―American Idol 3‖, on January 27.The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act.

Hung‘s response? ―I already did my best, so I have no regrets at all.‖ That‘s good, because any common person would have found plenty to regret: the off-key singing, the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high, the terrible dancing and the hips jerking(摇摆)to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad. However, it was this very bad act that sold well.

Mare Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: ―Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That‘s what William did and immediately won the hearts of America.‖Whatever it is, for the moment it‘s big.Three websites devoted to Hung have gone up on the Internet in the past few weeks.Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno-music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station.

So, what does Hung think of this?

―There were all these people saying things about me.A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the s how, but some didn‘t have much respect for me and some were kind of mean.‖

I was born an albino. No one in my family had ever known what an albino was, what it meant to be an albino, and what had to be done differently because I was an albino.

My parents treated me just like they treated everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done.It helped me trust myself,so when the annoyances came along,I could deal with them.

Actually, my photo always looked like a snowball with two pieces of coal for eyes.Kids would tease me,asking if I was joining the circus and calling me ―Whitey‖.Like most albinos,I had terrible eyesight, and my grades suffered until eventually I overcame my feeling ashamed of myself and realized it was okay to ask to sit in the front of the classroom so I could see the blackboard better.People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read.Even when I was eight or nine,movie-theater clerks started asking me to pay adult prices because I ―looked older‖.

The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad,I couldn‘t play sports very well.I didn‘t give up trying, though. And I studied harder.Eventually,I got better at school and loved it.By the time I got to college I was double majoring, going to summer school and devoting myself to every kind of extracurricular activity I could find.I had learned to be proud of being an albino.I did my best to make “albino”a positive word. And I decided to make my living with my eyes.

I couldn‘t see well enough to play sports, but with a solid education and the drive to do it, I could make a living involved in the field I loved.I‘ve done it now for more than thirty years in

print and in video, and now in cyberspace.People make jokes about how I‘m the only ―blind editor‖ they know, but most of the time the jokes are signs of respect. And I make jokes about being an albino.

I was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania.I now realize that being born an albino helped me to overcome difficulties, gain confidence, and be proud of my personal achievement and humble about my professional accomplishments.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We‘re usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. In fact,we really shouldn‘t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This“self—talk”helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.Be aware, though, that as much as 77%of self—talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive,we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back ,The next time you finish a project,do well in a test,or finally clean your room, join me in saying“Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store,we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will
