Dick often goes traveling when the summer holiday begins. But he was out of luck this summer. He went to an old temple (寺院) on a high mountain by himself. He had to pass the night in a broken farmhouse at the foot of the mountain. Being hungry, he hardly fell asleep. The next morning the rain stopped and he found the bridge was damaged. He saw the river was narrow and tried to swim across it. In the middle of the river the water hardly washed him away. Two farmers saved him but he lost his bag. They gave him some food and dried his clothes. He thanked them and went to the nearest town to call up his parents.

When my brother and I were young, my mom would take us on Transportation Days.

It goes like this: You can’t take any means of transportat ion more than once. We would start from home, walking two blocks to the rail station. We’d take the train into the city center, then a bus, switching to the tram, then maybe a taxi. We always considered taking a horse carriage in the historic district, but we didn’t like the way the horses were treated, so we never did. At the end of the day, we took the subway to our closest station, where Mom’s friend was waiting to give us a ride home—our first car ride of the day.

The good thing about Transportation Days is not only that Mom taught us how to get around. She was born to be multimodal(多方式的). She understood that depending on cars only was a failure of imagination and, above all, a failure of confidence—the product of a childhood not spent exploring subway tunnels.

Once you learn the route map and step with certainty over the gap between the train and the platform, nothing is frightening anymore. New cities are just light-rail lines to be explored. And your personal car, if you have one, becomes just one more tool in the toolbox—and often an inadequate one, limiting both your mobility and your wallet.

On Transportation Days, we might stop for lunch on Chestnut Street or buy a new book or toy, but the transportation was the point. First, it was exciting enough to watch the world speed by from the train window. As I got older, my mom helped me unlock the mysteries that would otherwise have paralyzed my first attempts to do it myself: How do I know where to get off? How do I know how much it costs? How do I know when I need tickets, and where to get them? What track, what line, which direction, where’s the stop, and will I get wet when we go under the river?

I’m writing this right now on an airplane, a means we didn’t try on our Transportation Days and, we now know, the dirtiest and most polluting of them all. My flight routed me through Philadelphia. My multimodal mom met me for dinner in the airport. She took a train to meet me.

50. Which was forbidden by Mom on Transportation Days?

A. Having a car ride.

B. Taking the train twice.

C. Buying more than one toy.

D. Touring the historic district.

51. According to the writer, what was the greatest benefit of her Transportation Days?

A. Building confidence in herself.

B. Reducing her use of private cars.

C. Developing her sense of direction.

D. Giving her knowledge about vehicles.

52. The underlined word “paralyzed” (in Para. 5) is closest in meaning to “_______”.

A. displayed

B. justified

C. ignored

D. ruined

53. Which means of transportation does the writer probably disapprove of?

A. Airplane.

B. Subway.

C. Tram.

D. Car.

Eyesight problems are common among all ages and if they are left untreated, they can cause serious headaches or other problems. The good news is that most eyesight problems can easily be sorted out by wearing glasses.

Regular eye tests are important for everyone. Children and teenagers, under the age of 16 and up to the age of 19 for those full-time education, have the right to have eye tests for free in Britain. As the eye test is free, there’s no excuse for not having a regular eye test. Doctors suggest that it’s better to have an eye test about once a year. Wearing glasses isn’t always regarded as all that cool and teens who suddenly need to wear glasses may find it difficult to accept. If they’ve grown up wearing glasses, then they may be more used to it. However, if your eyes are in poor health, not wearing glasses can put even more pressure on your eyes and could make them even worse.

Thankfully, the days of little choice of glasses frames (框架) for teenagers are gone and there’s now a wide selection of frames. If a teen does need to wear glasses, then it’s good to let him or her choose the type, as he or she will be able to choose something he or she feels comfortable. Don’t forget to be guid ed by the experts on glasses too.

57. According to the text, teens in the UK ______.

A. have few eyesight problems

B. can design their own glasses

C. change their glasses very often

D. can check their eyes without paying

58. How often do doctors suggest teens to have an eye test?

A. Once a month.

B. Once every six months.

C. Once a year.

D. Twice a year.

59. It can be learned from the text that teens ______.

A. find it difficult to buy comfortable glasses

B. prefer to wear cool glasses at an early age

C. are advised to wear glasses if their eyesight is poor

D. think they are much cooler when wearing glasses

60. In the text, the writer mainly wants to tell us ______.

A. how to talk with doctors

B. at what age to wear glasses

C. how to buy the suitable glasses

D. how to treat eyesight problems

One of the things that can contribute to lack of motivation is doing the same things every day and getting stuck into it without knowing where you are heading.

No doubt every Senior 3 student wishes to be successful in the National college Entrance Examination. Yet what should we do in order to achieve success? Here are some suggestions.

First, it’s very important to have a right attitude, for a normal state of mind and self-confidence not only helps us to relax but also enables us to overcome difficulties bravely. Meanwhile, we should have a definite goal and a correct estimation of ourselves. Only in this way will we not be easily pleased or disappointed with what we have known and done. Besides, we’d better sometimes talk with our parents, teachers or classmates, who may help us out when we’re in tr ouble. Finally, keeping a proper balance between study and rest keeps us energetic and a healthy diet is useful as well.

With these done, I think we can greatly improve our performance
