Passage 1

I jumped over the wall and ran towards the sound. I thought somebody was being killed. There was silence and then one terrible scream. I’ll tell you what it sounded like, it sounded like someone at the point of death. There was a long groan and then nothing at all. Silence. I ran all about the place, but I couldn’t find anyone. At last I climbed the hill again, and went back to the house.

You can imagine how much sleep I got that night. As soon as it was light, I looked out of the window in the direction from which the noise had come and I was surprised to see a little white house just over the hill among the olive trees. The land over on that side did not belong to us and I’d never explored it. I hardly ever went over t o the part of the house with facts that way, and I’d never seen this other house before. I asked Joe what it was. He told me that a madman had lived there, with his brother and a servant.

“ Oh, is it the explanation of what I heard last night?” I said, “ Not a very nice neighbor.”

Joe bent over quickly, seized my wrist and pulled me towards him. He put his face close to mine and looked terrified.

“The madman had been dead for twenty years,” he whispered, “You can’t possibly have heard any noise from that

Passage 2

.

Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia, they had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.

Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called the Straits of Magellan. In November 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.

They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, men were dying of starvation. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan’s expedition However, their achievement was great. They were the first men to sail round the world.

Passage Three

Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that

the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents.

Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen.

11. In the past, many young people__________.

A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics

C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers

12. Now with TV people can__________.

A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics

C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely

13. The author thinks that TV advertisements__________.

A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people

C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young

14. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A) People have become used to crimes now.

B)With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly.

C) People now like to read books with pictures.

D) The adults are less violent than the young.

15. From the passage, we can conclude that__________.

A) children should keep away from TV

B) TV programs should be improved

C) children's books should have pictures

D) TV has a deep influence on the young

Passage Four

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time. Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. Th is lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun, see a great movie, perhaps and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t

eliminate any of the old ways.

16. The purpose of this passage is to ______

Want a mind-body exercise that doesn’t even require getting off the couch? Laugh!

Research has shown that 100 to 200 deep “hee hahs” can benefit your body as much as ten minutes of rowing. Laughter gets your blood circulating, gives your heart a workout, supplies your lungs with oxygen, stimulates your brain, activates your immune system, and suppresses stress hormones.

You don’t need an expert to tell you how good it feels to laugh; but with a busy life and everyday stresses, no doubt you can use these six nifty ways to have yourself a good “hee hah.”

Keep an active joy list. Write down the things during the day that make you laugh. And you will quickly forget the ninety-nine other things that drove you nuts that day.

Make photo funnies. Take pictures of your friends and your making funny faces. Keep the photos of your friends and your making funny faces. Keep the photos in your purse and pull them out during stressful times.

Watch funny videos.

Give yourself an internal humor ally. Have a favorite comedian? When you feel a tense moment coming on, imagine how he or she would react.

Create a laughing place. Cut out your favorite cartoons and tack them to your refrigerator. Also keep your favorite cartoon books handy.

Try ballooning. To take the edge off a bad situation, exaggerate the scene in your mind, blowing it completely out of proportion into a picture.

Passage Six

Earthquakes may rightly be ranked as one of the most destructive forces known to man: since records began to be written down, it has been estimated that earthquake-related fatalities (死亡) have numbered in the millions, and that earthquake-related destruction has been beyond calculation. The greater part of such damage and loss of life has been due to falling down of buildings and the effects of rockslides, floods, fire, disease, gigantic sea waves, and other phenomena resulting from earthquakes, rather than from the quakes themselves.

The great majority of all earthquakes occur on two specific areas, along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean and from the East Indies to the Atlas Mountains. But they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.

This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the fear and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake prediction may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth’s surface, and other unusual phenomena, scientists have shown increasing success in predicting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake-warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for the vast destruction that might

otherwise have been totally unexpected.

It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and do away with the destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible destruction before it occurs.

26. Most destruction caused by earthquakes is the results of the following EXCEPT ______

A. the collapsing of buildings and the fire it causes

B. the floods and huge sea waves resulting from earthquakes

C. the disease that often follows earthquakes

D. the panic brought about by earthquakes

27. “This element of the unknown” in the third paragraph refers to the fact that ______

B. Unusual behavior of animals may be an indication of possible earthquakes.

C. It seems possible now for scientists to predict when and where earthquakes will occur.

D. Most earthquakes take place on some specific areas of the earth.

29. The author believes that the prediction of earthquakes ______

A. should be more accurate in future

B. is of some help

C. is as a matter of fact impossible

D. is really reliable

30. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author is chiefly interested in ______

A. controlling earthquakes

B. making earthquakes harmless

C. getting prepared and handling the possible destruction beforehand

D. having a better understanding of earthquakes.

Passage Seven

Most Americans clean their plates, no matter how full those plates are, a survey has found. The findings, released by the American Institute for Cancer Research On Thursday, add to the debate over how much restaurants and fast-food outlets are contributing to the epidemic (流行病) of obesity(肥胖症)in the United States and elsewhere. The institute’s survey found that 69 percent of those polled finish their meals most or all of the time, even when the portions are huge. “Fully 30 percent of Americans now say they generally base the amount of food they eat on the amount they are served,” according to the institute, which promotes research on the links between diet and cancer. “In a country where 64 percent of us are overweight or obese, there is an alarming tendency to overlook the s heer amount of food we’re eating,” Dr. Barbara Rolls of Pennsylvania State University said.

The report compiled information from two surveys involving 1,000 adults each. One was conducted in 2000 and the other in 2003. Passage Eight

The UN was started for two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over the world were tired of war. They were tired not just of World War II, but of war itself. They felt that there must be peaceful answers to the world’s problems. They felt that only an international organization could kee p world peace.

The second reason was that modern science had developed new bombs and airplanes. These weapons made it almost possible for a country to defend itself. National borders were beginning to lose their meaning. There was also a feeling that this was only the beginning. Science would develop even more dangerous weapons in the future. Only an international organization would be able to control modern science.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was President of the United States at that time, believed that the Allies (同盟国) should plan for peace before the war ended. On December 1, 1943, Roosevelt, Winston Churchill of Great Britain, and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union agreed to start an organization for world peace. They asked all countries, large and small, to join them.

During the next year and a half, the idea of such an organization was debated in all the capitals of the world. Then came a big day in modern history. On April 11, 1945, the first international meeting of the United Nations took place in San Francisco.

The goal of the meeting was to write the UN Charter (宪章). All of the fifty-one nations at the meeting had their own ideas to offer for the Charter. After a long debate, a Charter was agreed upon. Every nation present voted for the Charter; no one voted against it.

Passage Nine

The secret of being born lucky is a summer birthday, with May babies most likely to enjoy a lifetime’s good fortune, according to a study of more than 40,000 people. The time of year at which you are born has an enduring influence on levels of optimism and self-reported luck, according to research by British and Swedish scientists. May was the luckiest month in which to be born, with 50 percent of those born then considering themselves lucky, while October was the least lucky month, with just 43 percent claiming good fortune.

The findings add to growing evidence that the phenomenon of luck is not all down to chance, but is affected by a person’s general disposition (性情). Other research has shown that whether people think themselves fortunate depends less on objective success than on having a “glass half-full” or “half-empty” approach of life. “What we are seeing suggests that something is influencing how people perceive their luckiness. My hypothesis is that people create their own luck by traits such as optimism, that luck is a psychological phenomenon rather than a matter of blind chance,” said Professor Richard Wiseman, who led the research.

The pattern of the results, with those born in spring and summer reporting themselves luckier than those born in autumn or winter, could have two potential explanations, Professor Wiseman said.

You forget things about people. I wanted to relearn things I’d forgotten.” Telling no on e of his plans, Dr. Coleman started his study leave on a farm in Canada, hundreds of miles from his college. Getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in Atlanta, GeorgiA、 After that, the college president washed dishes ina Boston restaurant. Not Bill Hargrave. Both Paula and Nancy had been smart enough to know that. And for some time everyone in the office had known that one of them, Paula or Nancy, was going to get the job. In fact, the decision would probably be made this afternoon. Hargrave was leaving town and wanted to settle the matter before he left. The two girls could see him from their desks outside his office. Maybe it was only some correspondence that he was looking at with cool, keen eyes. But for a moment his finger seemed to pause above those two efficient little pushbuttons. If he pressed the left one, it would be Paula's pulse which would begin to beat faster. Paula couldn't keep her eyes off that light on her desk. She kept making mistakes in her typing and nervously taking the sheets of paper out in order to start all over again. She leaned across her typewriter and said to Nancy, "They boss is all dressed up today. He must be going on a special trip." ?She was just talking to relieve her nervousness. Nancy took her time about answering. She wasn't used to having Paula talk to her in such an intimate tone. (1)Not since they'd learned a month ago that they were both in line for a promotion, for the important job as Bill Hargrave's secretary. well, the job was worth going after. There was the salary, for one thing. And there was the prestige. The boss' secretary knew a great deal about the business. And there were the interesting people she got to talk to. The important people. And the boxes of perfume, flowers, and candy they often left on her desk. And there was Bill Hargrave for a boss. Young and clever and attractive. That was a factor, too. (2)Paula didn't need any lessons when it came to office politics. She was the one who was always busy when someone of little importance in the office wanted his material typed. "Sorry, but it's impossible. Jack. Why not ask Nancy?" and they did ask Nancy. It left Paula free to do Bill Hargrave's work in a hurry. She was never too busy for Bill's work. When Hargrave finally pressed one of those buttons it was at Paula's desk that the light went on. She started to make a grab for her notebook, but she quickly took out her mirror first. Then she grabbed up her notebook and an envelope that was on the desk. (3)As for Nancy, what else could she do but sit there with her pretty blonde head bent over her typewriter? Nancy was a natural blonde, and that seemed the best way to describe her, she just didn't seem to know any tricks such as Paula did for making herself more popular with the boss. The moment Paula got inside Hargrave's office he asked about that stateroom. She handed him the envelope. It contained the two tickets. "That's your stateroom number on the outside," she said in a businesslike way. She had on a blue flannel suit, something like Bill's, and it was clear he thought she looked pretty smart in it. He looked again at the number of his stateroom and he put the envelope carefully in his inside pocket. Then he told her she was going to have a new job. He mentioned the salary, too. He didn't neglect to mention the salary. She took it just right - in a very businesslike manner. Just enough of gratitude. And then, the old sportsmanship how sorry she felt about Nancy. She didn't look sorry. (4)And neither did Bill. He told her it was okay, that she shouldn't worry about Nancy, that Nancy wasn't made for the job anyway, and that besides, he and Nancy were leaving on their honeymoon tonight. Tonight at eight-fifteen.

In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often, too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families can not be moved from place to place as smaller families can. So, at present people tend to have smaller families. In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consists only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take child raising as their chief work. At the same time they may also raise other people's children, leaving those families free to move from job to job. (1)、The passage discusses influence of science and industry on American families. I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn't find it anywhere. The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day. When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar! They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this. I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and I continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more. Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too!
