第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

One day I saw Harold, my neighbor, putting some metal sheets around the base of his tree where he kept his bird feeder(喂鸟器). I didn’t understand why until another neighbor explained to me that Harold was trying to keep the squirrels(松鼠)from eating the bird food. By putting the metal sheets around the base, Harold thought the squirrels wouldn’t be able to climb up the tree. The next morning, the food was gone. The following week Harold figured he’d put the bird feeder on a string and hang it from the tip of one of the branches. I believe his thinking as that the squirrel couldn’t go out to the edge of the branch because the branch wouldn’t support the weight thereby(因此)not allowing the squirrel to get to the feeder. Next day, you got it, the food was

gone, too.

I felt sorry for Harold. Although Harold was stronger and smarter than the squirrel, he lacked the one quality that would guarantee him victory--focus. You see Harold thinks about ways of preventing the squirrel from getting the food on occasion, when he has time. The squirrel, on the other hand has its mind on getting that food 24 hours a day. The squirrels’ survival depends on it. Survival brings about, not just focus but an intense focus on solving a problem by removing an obstacle.

Success is not about who is stronger. Success is not about who has a better GPA(平均分数). Success is about who is more focused and committed to achieving their objectives. You, the reader, can compete with any person no matter who they may be. The only thing you have to do is commit yourself to focusing on the very subject that interests you.

21.Harold was worried because the squirrel ________.

A. ate his bird food

B. hurt many of his birds

C. could climb the tree quickly

D. reached the end of the branches

22.What made the squirrel succeed according to the passage?

A. Its cleverness.

B. Its fixed attention.

C. Its strength.

D. Its very survival.

23.What does the writer advise you to do if you want to succeed?

A. To be brave enough to compete with others.

B. To try to keep your body healthy.

C. To work much harder than others.

D. To put your heart into what interests you.

B

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31, before All Saints Day. The word “Halloween” is a shortening of All Hallows Evening, also known as Halloween or All Hallows’ Eve.

Bad trick-or-treating has started to happen among children in many parts of Europe. You are a new manager at the American branch of your German firm in Chicago. With a few minutes to spare between meetings, you go to get a quick cup of coffee.

“Hey,David, how are you?”one of the senior partners at the firm asks you.

“Good, thank you,Dr.Greer,”you reply. You’ve really been wanting to make a connection with the senior leadership at the firm, and this seems like a great opportunity. But as you start to

think of something to say, your American colleague breaks in to steal your spotlight.“So Arnold”,your colleague says to your boss,in such a casual manner that it makes your German soul cringe(畏缩),“So what’s your Super bowl prediction? I mean, you’re a Niners fan, right?”

The conversation moves on,and you walk silently back to your desk with your coffee. You know how important small talk is in the U.S.,and you feel jealous of people who are your colleague who can do it well.

There’s nothing small about the role that small talk plays in American professional culture.People from other countries are often surprised at how important small talk is in the U.S.and how naturally and comfortably people seem to do it—with peers, men, women, and even with superiors. You can be the most technically skilled worker in the world, but your ability to progress in your job in the United States is highly dependent on your ability to build and maintain positive relationships with people at work. And guess what skill is critical for building and maintaining these relationships? Small talk.

What can you do if you are from another culture and want to learn to use small talk in the U.S.to build relationships and establish trust? Work hard to hone(磨练)your own version of American-style small talk.Watch how others do it.You don’t have to mimic what they do;in fact, that would likely backfire because people would see you as inauthentic. But if you can develop your own personal version, that can go a long way toward making you feel comfortable and competence.

28.The author introduces the topic of the passage by______.

A.be difficult B.be helpful

You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t think that fo rgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street a nd saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said.

The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the biberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used th e canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on my street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

32. For what purpose did Belyacv create the lampbrella?

A. To predict a heavy rain.

B. To check the weather forecast.

C. To protect people from the rain.

D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

33. What do we know from Belyacv’s words in Paragraph 2?

A. His creation was inspired by an experience.

B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.

C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.

D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.

34. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella?

A. Its moving speed.

B. Its appearance.

C. Its installation.

D. Its safety.

35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The designer will open a company to promote his product.

B. The lampbrella could be put into immediate production.

C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.

D. The lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。注意:E,涂AB;F,涂AC;G,涂AD。

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online. 36 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 37

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. 38 You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

39 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily lon g answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.40 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A. Everyone was new to the network once.

B. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

C. But try not to do so.

D. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

E. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the

person’s face.

F. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

G. It’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.

Furthermore, we should be braver enough to meet the challenges and manage to overcome the difficulties and sadness we meet in your life. By doing so, we can make greater progress in our field and enjoy our success and pleasure earning by ourselves. All in all, not only should we learn to enjoy the beauty of life now, but also we should learn how protect and fight against a more beautiful life in the future. 第 1页(共 2 页)
