Letting her take the wheel

My daughter, Mia, is 16 and learning to drive. Many parents are freaked out ( 惊慌失措) about putting their easily distracted teenagers in charge of a fast-moving chunk ( 大块) of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.

I’ve learned a few things. First, Mia didn’t know how to drive at all. She didn’t even know where to put the key. It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle. Worse, she couldn’t remember that D was for drive, and R meant reverse (倒车).

Then came the road rules. Mia likes to sail past stop signs. I had to ex plain that “STOP means STOP”. Had she actually read the rule book? “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it. “It was so boring.”

Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn’t learned anything.

Despite these things, I’ve also learn ed that I enjoy teaching her. I think I’m pretty good at it.I am much calmer than I thought I would be.

I also enjoy the one-on-one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far, we have covered her friends’ hairstyles and how stressed sh e feels after school. I enjoyed communicating with her.

One Sunday evening, we were driving down a narrow back street, deep in conversation, when I realized that the car was moving quite fast. “SLOW DOWN!” I yelled, yanking (猛拉) the hand brake (手刹).

We stopped the car and sat in the dark for a minute. “You can’t go that fast,”I said. “You don’t know enough yet.” I put my hand on her head, “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“Me neither.” she said.

“Okay, cool,” I said. “Let’s g o.”

she started the car and we headed back home.

New law lets students sleep in

When your alarm clock rings and you drag yourself out of bed, you probably wonder: Why on earth does school have to start so early?

Fortunately, there is a new law to back you up―or better still, science.

A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 8:00 am and that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am. The law will go into effect by July 1, 2022.

Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.

“The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of getting fat and diabetes (糖尿病).

In the short run, students’school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a re searcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are more alert (机敏的) in class and get better grades.

Some might say that urging students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11: 00 pm. So when school starts at 8: 00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.

This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generatio ns of children will come to appreciate ( 感激) this historic day and our governor for taking bold action.

8.When should public high schools start classes according to the California’s new law?

A.No earlier than 7:30 am.

B.No earlier than 8:00 am.

C.No earlier than 8:30 am.

D.No earlier than 9:00 am.

9.What can we learn from Bhargava’s words?

A.The amount of sleep people need changes with age.

https://www.doczj.com/doc/5812562801.html,ck of sleep affects adults more than children.

C.Sleep problems are one of the leading causes of diabetes.

https://www.doczj.com/doc/5812562801.html,ck of sleep could lead to health problems.

10.What do we know about teenagers’ sleep patterns?

A.Less sleep is needed when they enter puberty.

B.Ideally, they need eight hours of sleep a night.

C.They may have difficulty falling asleep before 11:00 pm.

D.They often wake up at midnight due to biological changes.

11.Where does this passage probably come from?

A. A textbook.

B. An advertisement.

“Severe flooding in Venice that has left much of the Italian city under water is a direct result of climate ch ange,” the mayor says. The highest water levels in the region in more than 50 years

would leave a permanent mark, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted. “Now the government must listen,” he added. “These are the effects of climate change. The cost will be h igh.”

The waters in Venice peaked at 1.87m, according to the tide monitoring centre. Only once since official records began in 1923 has the tide been higher, reaching 1.94m in 1966. St Mark’s Square — one of the lowest parts of the city — was one of the wo rst hit areas. St Mark’s Basilica was flooded for the sixth time in 1,200 years, according to church records. Pierpaolo Campostrini, a member of St Mark’s council, said four of those floods had now occurred within the past 20 years.

The mayor said the famous landmark had suffered grave damage. The crypt was completely flooded and there are fears of structural damage to the basilica’s columns. The city of Venice is made up of more than 100 islands inside a lagoon (濒海湖) off the north-east coast of Italy. Two people died on the island of Pellestrina, a thin strip of land that separates the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. One of them was electrocuted (触电身亡) as he tried to start a pump in his home.

Mr Brugnaro said the damage was huge and that he would declare a state of disaster, warning that a project to help prevent the Venetian lagoon suffering devastating floods must be finished soon. “The situation is dramatic. We ask the government to help us,” he said on Twitter, adding that schools would remain closed until the water level subsides. He also urged local businesses to share photos and video footage of the devastation, which he said would be useful when requesting financial help from the government.

12.Why was St Mark’s Square one of the worst hit areas?

A.Because it lied on the coast of the sea.

B.Because it was in the low-lying area in Venice.

C.Because the flood first flew through this place.

D.Because it was a place where it rained most heavily.

13.What does the underlined word“devastating ” mean?

A.Slight.

B. Urgent.

C. Destructive.

D. Unforgettable.

14.What did Mr Brugnaro do to get the government’s support?

A.He would declare a state of disaster.

B.He would ask the schools to remain closed.

C.He made a project to prevent the lagoon suffering floods.

D.He called on local businesses to share information on social media.

15.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Two people died from drowning.

B.It is the highest water level since being recorded.

C.The flood has caused basilica’s columns being damaged.

D.St Mark's Basilica has been flooded four times in the past 20 years.

What roles do your parents play in your family?

16. In modern families, mothers may have their own careers, and fathers also help out with housework and taking care of children.

This is probably why recently, the brand slogan (标语) “Loved by kids, approved by mums,”which was featured (使担任重要角色) in ads for a well-known breakfast cereal (麦片粥), led to a heated discussion online.

17. An article on the Louisiana Weekly newspaper said, “As the number of double-income households increases, the roles of men and women have changed over time. It has accounted for a more equal distribution of labor between mothers and fathers.”

Indeed, more and more men have changed their views on their roles in families.

18.

However, the biggest problem facing them is not only struggling with housework and childcare, but also doubts over whether they’re doing enough.

19.“You’re measured by how much time you’re able to spend with your kids and how much you’re able to do with your family,” Matt Schneider. co-founder of a US-based network for stay-at-home dads, told CBS News.

However, despite all the difficulties, there are special moments that make it worthwhile for stay-at-home fathers. “When my son crawls (爬行) into bed, puts his head on my chest, and says, ‘I love you,’ I don’t even know if he knows what that means,” a stay-at-home dad called Scott Durkin told ABC News, “20.”

A.Many choose to be stay-at-home dads.

B.But you get all warm inside.

C.It’s not just about being a paycheck anymore.

D.Dads have some unique qualities that make them different from mothers.

E.In the past, women were more likely than men to look after family members.

F.It’s reasonable for some women to want to go out to work.

G.A campaign group in the United Kingdom complained that the slogan was biased (歧视) against stay-at-home men.

第II 卷

第二节(共10 小题;每小题1.5 分,满分15 分)

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

More than 30,000 runners selected from 160,000 applicants both in and out of China, 36 (take) part in this year’s Beijing Marathon on Nov 3.

37 (wear) colorful T-shirts and posing for photos, they gathered at Tian’anmen Square before taking their places at the starting line.

Nearly a decade ago, Chinese marathon 38 (organizer) struggled to fill the starting blocks. Now, at big events 39 the Beijing Marathon, runners must win a lottery 40 (enter).

This is part of the world’s running boom (热潮). For millions of runners around the world, the real reason they head out to pound the roads until their legs hurt is more than weight 41 (lost) or fitness.

Chasing records like the three-hour mark, for example, is important, but it's not 42 people run mile after mile, up hills, in wind and rain, when they could just stay comfortable in their beds. Record times are merely the carrots they dangle (悬挂) in front of 43 (they).

Last year, a runner in the United Kingdom trained with the goal of 44 (run) a marathon in less than three hours. In the end, he finished in three hours and two minutes. However, he was

pleased afterward. “If I had done it. that would be it.” he told the Guardian. “Now I’ve still got my target, I can try again next year.”

45 running is hard and requires effort, it also brings joy. Think about children. When they are excited, they can’t stop running back and forth, up and down.

The first week of my summer vacation was exciting, and my sense of freedom was so intense that it felt like I had to pack everything into that single week. The next week was a little calmer. But by the third week my two best friends had left for summer camp and my activities wound down into boredom. Getting up later each morning, I was spending more and more time with my cellphone and in front of the TV. That is when Mom reacted, declaring my phone and the TV off limits between 6: 00 in the morning and 6:00 at night. It was shocking just to hear her say it.

In that first hour I felt I’d lost my sense of sight and hearing. The silence was numbing. I circled the house, going from room to room looking for something to do, asking myself what I can do. What can I do? What can I do? When I encountered Mom in the kitchen, I asked her, too,“What can I do?”

“That’s up to you,” she said without looking in my direction. Through the day I posed my question to her several more times, getting much the same result. Then late in the afternoon, while she was working at her computer, I dared to ask again. Instantly she swung around to look at me, and I could see that my question had a definite effect on her expression. She looked as though she had been shocked. Her jaws clenched, like she was holding her words between her teeth as they

struggled to get out. She looked me straight in the eye, then smiled and said, “ Well, are you up for a challenge?”

“Sure what?”

“Your challenge is to follow the same ant for ten minutes.”

“What is so tough about that?”

She smiled again. “You might be surprised.”

Sometime later Mom stood beside me, timer( 计时器) in hand. “I’ll set the timer for ten minutes when you find your winning ant.”

Para 1: Some of the ants I saw seemed to be eating something.

Para 2: I heard Mom’s timer ring and then “You win, sweetie,” she said.

第一节:

Dear George,

Knowing that you’re interested in what our Chinese family gatherings are like, I’m glad to introduce some of my experiences with you.

We Chinese like to get together with our family very much, especially on important days such as festivals and birthdays. Most of the time, we bring gifts to the elders and the kids. Eating is one of the most necessary parts of the gathering, which is usually prepared by family members together. Not only is the various food delicious but the time we spend making and enjoying it together is enjoyable. Adults chatting and children playing around are typical scenes of a happy family gathering.

Hope one day you can come and experience a gathering by yourself!

Yours,

Li Hua 第二节:

Some of the ants I saw seemed to be eating something. What I really needed was a long-distance ant—a runner, otherwise I would stand no chance of winning the challenge. Fortunately enough, soon my eyes locked on a big ant that was carrying a long piece of grass. Mom reminded me that the clock started to tick. I crawled to follow the ant while he struggled up and around. Whenever he was near the small hole around the corner, my heart missed a beat. What if he disappeared into the nearest hole? But believe it or not, this time, I was favoured by luck.

I heard Mom’s timer ring and then “You win, sweetie,” she said. But curiosity glued my eyes to the ant. When he was approaching a crack, he turned and climbed back onto the concrete, seeking another possible route. How clever the ant was! Time really flies when you are absorbed in something interesting! The rest of my summer days were filled with more fun activities from planting sunflowers along the fence to observing birds in our backyard. I hardly thought of my cellphone, which lay in th e back of my desk drawer. Nor did I raise that silly question “ What can I do” again!

W: Well, I really try to limit the amount of salt and sugar in our food. And we never eat fried food anymore.

W: Oh, it’s working fine now, thanks.

M: Good, and is the washing machine OK?

W: Yes, since you had it fixed last year, I haven’t had any problems with the water leaking. I want to talk to you about the sofa, though. It’s really uncomfortable. Maybe it’s time to replace it. How old is it, anyway?

M: Well, I admit it is pretty old. About 20 years, I guess. Maybe it is time to think about a new one. Is the TV set working on all the stations?

W: Not really. The reception is bad on some of the stations.

M: OK. I will have it checked out next week.

Text 10

W: Attention! Attention! This is an announcement for all passengers and crew aboard this cruise ship! It seems that we have run out of fuel, and will have to stop in approximately ten minutes. We are around 200 miles off the coast, and we are in the process of contacting the coast guard to come to our rescue. Please do not panic! There is no danger of us sinking! We are merely unable to move! Once help arrives, we will make another announcement, and let you know how to proceed. In the meantime, please continue to enjoy our many onboard luxuries, like our warm water pool, our tennis courts, and our gym. Our staff will also be handing out free drink in the dining halls. If you have any questions or concerns, please approach one of our crew members. We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for choosing our cruise line!
