For years, researchers have associated imitation among human beings –copying another's actions – with positive social behavior, like cooperation and friendship. Imitating another's actions is a way to connect with them, and to communicate our affection for that person. Now, researchers have found that capuchin monkeys, a highly social species of monkey, often repay imitation with friendship as well.

So if we consider imitation to be the highest form of flattery, then it seems like monkeys feel the same way too. This discovery of a link between imitation and friendly social behavior in non-human primates suggests that imitation could actually be a means of productive social behavior among all primates – including humans.

In a series of social experiments with these capuchin monkeys, Annika Paukner and a team of researchers observed that the capuchins preferred the humans who immediately imitated the monkeys' actions much more than other humans who performed the same actions – but not at the same time as the monkeys.

The researchers found that the monkeys looked longer at the human who mimicked them, spent more time near them, and also interacted with them more often compared to humans who weren't directly imitating them.

During follow-up experiments, the researchers were also able to confirm that it was, in fact, the human act of imitation that gained the capuchin monkeys' friendship–and not just more attention or familiarity.

So, it seems like all primates, humans and monkeys, can appreciate the act of imitation – and the flattery that it implies.

B.The best way to train monkeys is by imitating them.

C.Monkeys and humans are closely related.

D.Monkeys felt flattered by the humans behaviour towards them.

When the American ship Commerce crashed into rocks and began sinking off the coast of northwest Africa in 1815, Captain James Riley and his crew knew enough to be terrified. Stories written by other sailors who had crashed their ships the same coast described the terrible treatment they had experienced from the local people. A few reports suggested that the locals were cannibals. Rather than see for themselves if these stories were true, the sailors quickly set back to sea in a longboat. Nine days later, thirsty, hungry and suffering from sunburn, they had no choice but to return to shore.

Soon after, the crew was captured by local tribes-people and forced to march across the Sahara Desert for days with little food or water. Riley witnessed one of his men, driven crazy by hunger and heat, chewing at the sun-burnt flesh of his own arm.

Eventually Riley convinced a desert trader named Sidi Hamet to purchase himself and four members of his crew and take them north—to a trading post where they could be exchanged for money and returned home. Along the way, Riley and Hamet developed a close relationship that helped them to survive severe hardships, attacks by bandits, and an attempt by Hamet's father-in-law, to sell the crew into slavery.

When Riley finally reached safety in 1817, he recorded his experiences in a book titled Sufferings in Africa. The book, which was widely read during the 1800s century, became largely forgotten during the 20th century.

Upon rediscovering Riley's classic survival narrative, Adventure author Dean King decided to travel to what is today the Morocco-controlled territory of Western Sahara to retrace Riley's route. Dean's retelling of Riley's story, titled Skeletons on the Sahara, is due out in February from Little, Brown, and Co, Inc. The book will be available in all good bookstores and also can be purchased now at Amazon online.

In Britain, his name is known by almost everyone. And his clothing – a blue duffle coat and an old red hat – is iconic During a trip to China four years ago, Britain’s Prince William even met the famous bear at the Chinese opening of the film Paddington. Paddington was first introduced to the world in 1958 in the children’s book A Bear Called Paddington by British writer Michael Bond. In the story, Paddington is kind and humorous. He is also polite and always calls people “Mr”, “Mrs” and “Miss”. This cute bear immediately won over people’s hearts. “Many Britons were raised on tales of Paddington, the second-best-known bear in fiction (小说) after Winnie the Pooh,” The Economist noted. The story shows how kind British people are towards those who are in trouble, as Paddington is given a new home in London after escaping from an earthquake in Peru. As time went on, Paddington became popular in other countries. He first appeared on TV in 1975. He’s also been made into toys that wear differ ent costumes. He’s been a guard for the British royal (王室的) family, a British policeman and a coffee shop waiter. Paddington is so beloved that it’s common to find plates and tea towels with Paddington patterns (图案) in British homes. Paddington has a special facial expression. He is known for giving a hard stare (瞪视) whenever he meets somebody he doesn’t like. Therefore, when someone gives a hard stare, you could say that they’re making a “Paddington Bear face”. 1.
