第三节:阅读理解(每小题2分,满分40分)

A

To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, or listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone’s life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feeling, the moving plot (情节), and the greatest interests, be as exciting or dramatic (戏剧性)? I am not sure about it.

Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning — the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in our everyday life too--- in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent their lives working on playing or writing music.

It is well said, “Through music a child enters a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”

38. In the writer’s opinion, if there was no music in films or TV plays, ______ .

A. the cinema and theatre would be quiet

B. we would lose some of the audience

D. it would be hard to imagine the result

39. What does the underlined word “ melody” mean in the text?

A. Flying.

B.Looking.

C. S.inging.

D. Living.

Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. If shyness is making you uncomfortable, it may be time for a few lessons in self-confidence. You can build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists.

Make a decision not to hold back in conversations. What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don’t turn down party invitations just because of your shynes s.

Prepare yourself for being with others in groups. Make a list of the good qualities you have. Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.

If you start feeling self-conscious in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. Remember, you are not alone. Other people are concerned about the impression they are making, too.

No one ever gets over being shy completely, but most people do learn to live with their shyness. Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy. They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the cameras and the public. Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards. But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know more about you.

We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.

When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration (迁移) is probably the migration of fish, which is called "salmon". This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they

fall into the sea.

Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster(龙虾). Every year, when the season of bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don't. Maybe living things just like to travel.

D. to find more food

47. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Animals move in order to find food more easily.

B. The migration of the fish called "salmon" is the most famous migration.

C. Living things move from one place to another because they like to travel.

D. Sometimes we know why and how living things move from one place to another, but

sometimes we don't.

When he took office, George W. Bush, son of former president George Herbert Walker Bush, became the first son to follow his father into the While House since John Quincy Adams followed John Adams in the early 19th century.

Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut, the first child of George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush. Although George Herbert Walker Bush began his career in the oil industry, he finally served as a congressman(国会议员), and vice(副的)president and president of the United States.

At the age of two, Bush moved with his parents from Connecticut to Odessa, Texas, where his father took up the oil business. After a year in Texas, the family moved to California for business reasons. A year later, the family returned to Texas and settled in Midland, where Bush lived from 1950 to 1959.

In 1959, again for business reasons, the family moved to Huston, Texas. In 1961 Bush left Texas and went to Andover, Massachusetts, to attend Phillips Academy, a boarding(寄宿)school that his father had also attended.

At Phillips, Bush played basketball, baseball, and football. He was best known for being head cheerleader. In 1964 he enrolled at Yale University in Connecticut; his father and grandfather has

also attended Yale. At Yale, Bush was considered an average student, but he was popular with his classmates.

Bush graduated from Yale with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1968. Then he joined the Air National Guard and remained in the Guard until 1973. After earning his MBA from Harvard in 1975, Bush returned to Midland. Like his father, he first entered the oil industry as a “landsman”.

However, Bush’s oil companies never enjoyed great success. He took more interest in politics. He helped his father to become president and in 1994 he himself was elected governor of Texas.

In the summer of 1999, Bush began to run for the president of the USA and on January 20, , George W. Bush, hand raised, took the oath(宣誓)of office to become the 43rd president of the US.

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course, there have always been people who have looked for adventure—those who have climbed the highest mountains, traveled into unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.

I would consider bungee jumping (蹦极跳) to be a good example of such an activity. You

jump from a high place with an elastic (有弹性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that about 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which most people would say are risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of the high cliffs.

Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists (心理学家) suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people’s lives were instantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for survival.

Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively safe surroundings; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping.

52. Nowadays, more and more people like to ________.

A. get injured in the sports for excitement

B. travel into unknown parts of the world

C. try activities such as bungee jumping

D. sail in small boats

53. Bungee jumping is a sport that you________.

A. jump as high as you can

B. jump from tall building without a rope

C. jump from the top of high cliffs and dive into the sea

D. attach (系上) yourself to a rope and fall down without hitting the ground

54. Why do people take part in dangerous sports nowadays?

A. Because their lives were constantly in danger.

B. Because their lives is short of excitement.

C. B ecause they don’t need to go out and hunt for food.

D. Because they have a lot of holidays.

55. From the text we can infer that the writer ________.

A. likes bungee jumping very much

B. doesn’t like risky activities at all

C. has an impersonal attitude towards the risky activities

D. is good at risky activities

书面表达:

Dear Editor,

I am writing to tell you about a discussion we had about whether students of Senior 3 should take physical exercise.60% of the students think they should take exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing ping-pang or basketball, but it should not take too much time. Taking exercise can build up their body and reduce disease. Sports let their brain rest so that their revision will be more effective. On the other hand, 40% believe taking exercise is a waste of time. After having sports, they will be too tired . Also, it’s possible to get hurt in sports.

In my opinion, we should take regular exercise. Only when we are in good health, can we be devoted to our studies and make contributions to our country in the future.

Yours,

Li Xiang
