When I was 14 years old, I used to babysit (做临时保姆) for the lady next door. Every two weeks she would pay me $80. I always looked forward to getting paid so I could go to the shopping centre with my friends on Saturday and spend the money on my favourite things.

One Friday evening I heard my mom on the phone with our neighbor and I heard her say a fewtimes, “Oh, that is terrible.” After my mom hung up, I asked what was wrong. She said that the neighbor had no food in her house and that she didn’t know what she was going to feed he r daughter with. Her husband had spent their money on beer and got angry because his wife asked for money to buy groceries (食品杂货). He began to pull dishes out of the cupboards (壁橱) and threw them at the wall. So, the lady didn’t have any groceries or dishes.

I had an idea. I asked my mom to drive me to McDonald’s.I bought the lady and her daughter dinner with the babysitting money she had given me. After I had taken them dinner, I asked my mom to take me to the store and I bought the lady dishes and groceries with the rest of the money. When I knocked on the front door, the lady gave me a big hug and told me how grateful she was that I helped her. When Saturday came around, I didn’t have any money to go to the shopping centre with my friends, but I didn’t care, because I felt great that I was able to help this family.

Later, we moved away from the area. I saw our neighbor three times and she always told me how much she thanked me for caring her and her daughter.

Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about what happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don’t sell? Well, you m ight be shocked (震惊) to find out that nearly

one third of food produced for human gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy life.

Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to do something about this imbalance and make use of thrown-out food that can be perfectly eaten. For example, there is a cafe in Leeds (UK) whose meals are all created using unsold food from supermarkets, including a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and other things. This unwanted food is turned into delicious soups and all kinds of dishes that feed the hungry people of Leeds. Customers simply pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up. In just ten months, 10,000 people were fed at this cafe, using twenty tons of unwanted food!

Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. The supermarket is near Leeds and works on a “pay as you feel”; customers pay whatever they want for the produce. The stock (库存) changes daily but you can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there. Some low-income families have said that it has changed their lives.

“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Surplus(多余的) food from supermarkets such as vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch.

I lived in Leeds for three years, and have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was all food that supermarkets had thrown away! I have also taken part in projects such as “Foodcycle”, using supermarkets’ unwanted food to cook meals for poor people.

More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK, and it is now becoming popular in the world. I think this is an amazing act as food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems. I also believe that the law should be changed, so that supermarkets don’t throw away so much perfectly good food!

27. 800 million people in the world can’t live a healthy life because of ______.

A. unsold food

B. unwanted food

C. being unable to work

D.being short of food

28. According to the passage, the writer agrees that ______.

A. buying the waste food can protect the environment

B. all the people in the world make use of waste food

C. food waste in the world can be solved by the UK soon

D. the government should make the law to stop food waste

29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A. To encourage people to save food.

B. To introduce some supermarkets in the UK.

C. To share his personal experience in saving food.

D. To explain why he cooked meals for poor people.

Speed reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and WeChat to try

to get key words and the meaning of the text. With so much information through our electronic device (设备), it would be impossible to get through everything if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to enjoy reading slowly.

A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smartphones. They sit in comfortable chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn’t to share ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment.

Slow readers, such as TheAtlantic’sMaura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves attention, lowers stress levels and deepens the ability to understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that adults who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer (遭受) less memory loss as they get older.

Yet technology has made us less careful readers. Computer and phone screens have changed our reading patterns from the top-to-bottom, left-to-right reading order we traditionally used, to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we search for important words and information. Reading text online that has many links to other web pages also leads to weaker understanding than reading plain text (纯文本). The Internet may have made us stupider, says British journalist Patrick Kingsley from the Guardian, only half joking. Because of the Internet, he says, we have become very good at collecting a large number of interesting news, but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, think and relate all these facts to each other.

Slowing reading means a return to an uninterrupted, straight pattern, in a quiet environment. Aim for 30 minutes a day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. “You can squeeze in (挤出) that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments —whenever you want to check your favorite site for something to pass the time—you pick up a meaningful work of literature,” Kelly said.

四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. An idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves. They are like puzzles. If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. That’s why even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they’ve never heard of.

Here are four common English idioms every English student should know in a lot of situations.

1. Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work)

This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. You can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your friend is being mean for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act together.

2. Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down)

It’s not polite to say “pull yourself together”to tell people to relax while they’re overreacting (反应过激). Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something important. When your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.

3. I’m feeling under the weather (Meaning: I’m sick)

Yes, it’s longer and more difficult to say than “I’m sick”, but if your English teacher asks you why you haven’t done your homework, he or she is more likely to forgive (原谅) you if you say that you were feeling under the weather.

4. Break a leg (Meaning: good luck!)

This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms. If someone says this to you, do not think they are frightening you; they are just wishing you luck. It is most often used for people wishing success to actors and actresses before they perform on the stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.

All in all, learning a new language can be challenging. It’s certainly not a piece of cake, especially when there are so many confusing idioms. However, with enough hard work and interest, you will succeed in no time. Break a leg!

34. What is an idiom?

35. How many common English idioms are talked about in the passage?

36. Is it polite to say“pull yourself together”to tell people to relax while they’re overreacting?

37. Which idiom can you use to wish somebody luck?

38. What is the passage mainly about?
