Passage A

A Night on Moorland

As I stepped out of the train I felt unusually solitary, since I was the only passenger. I was accustomed to arriving in the summer, when holiday-makers⑴throng coastal resorts, and this was my first visit when the season was over. My destination was a little village eight miles distant by the road, but only four if you took the cliff path over the moor⑵. This I always did, unless it was raining; and I left my luggage at the bus office beside the railway station, to be conveyed for me on the next bus, so that I could enjoy my walk unhampered by a suitcase⑶.

It took me only a few minutes to come to the foot of the cliff path. Halfway up I paused to enjoy the sight of the purple hill's stretching away to my right and to my left the open sea. When I reached the top I had left all signs of habitation behind me⑷. The moorland turf was springy under my feet, the air was like wine and I felt rejuvenated and intoxicated with it⑸. Glancing seaward a minute or two later, I was surprised to notice that the sky was already aflame with the sunset⑹. The air grew perceptibly cooler and I began to look forward to the delectable hot meal I should have when I reached the inn. It seemed to be getting dark amazingly quickly. I did not think that I had walked unduly slowly and I was at a loss to account for the exceptionally early end of daylight, until I recollected that on previous visits I had walked in high summer and now it was October and the nights were drawing in⑺.

All at once it was night. The track was grassy and even in daylight showed up hardly at all against the moor⑻, so it was difficult to keep on it now. If only I had been a smoker with matches always to hand, or if my torch had been in my pocket instead of in the suitcase, I could have walked with more assurance. As it was⑼, I was terrified of hurling over the edge of the cliff to the rocks below. When I did stray, however, it was towards the hills. I felt my feet squelching and sticking in something soggy. There was no bog(沼泽) to my knowledge⑽near the track, so I must have wandered a long way off my course. I extricated myself with difficulty⑾and very cautiously edged myself towards the sound of the sea. Then I bumped into a little clump of trees that suddenly loomed up in front of me. This was providential rest and shelter until the moon rose ⑿. I climbed up the nearest trunk and managed to find a tolerably comfortable fork in which to sit. The waiting seemed interminable and was relieved only by my attempts to identify the little stirrings and noises of animal life that I could hear⒀. I grew colder and colder and managed to sleep only in uneasy, fitful starts, waking when my position got cramped⒁. At last, when the moon came up I discovered that I was not more than fifty yards from the track and I was soon on my way again.

Passage B

Escape by Water

There were shots as I ran. I ducked down, pushed between two men and ran for the river. I tripped at the edge and went in with a splash. The water was icy, but I stayed under until I thought

my lungs would burst. The minute I came up I took a breath and plunged down again. Staying submerged was only too easy with so much clothing and my heavily-studded army boots. When I came up the second time I saw a piece of timber ahead of me and reached it and held on with both hands. There were no shots now. I looked at the bank, which seemed to be going by very fast. The piece of timber swung in the current but I held on grimly and let it take me along. When I looked again the shore was out of sight.

It was impossible to gauge how long I was in the river. It seemed a long time but may have been only ten minutes. It was the early spring floods of barely-melted snow from the mountain tops that were swirling round me, and the water was unbearably cold. I was lucky to have the heavy timber to hold on to, and I lay with my arms locked round it in an exhausted embrace. Sections of trees and various objects that had been floated off the banks when the river rose raced by me, scratching or buffeting me as they passed, It was beginning to be light enough to see the bushes along the muddy river bank. I wondered if I should sacrifice boots and clothes and try to swim ashore, but decided not to. I would be in a bad position if I landed barefoot. I had to get to headquarters somehow.

I watched the shore come close, then swing away, then come closer again, and then the, timber began to revolve slowly in the cross-currents of a bend in the river. As I faced the bank again, so close now that I could see branches on a willow tree strong enough to grasp, I tried holding with one arm and swimming with the other to force the timber to the bank, but I did not bring it any closer. I drew up my feet against the side of the timber and shoved hard towards the bank. But although I was exerting all my strength, the current was bearing me away. I thought then I would drown because of my boots, but I thrashed and fought through the water, and when I looked up the bank was coming towards me, so I kept swimming in a heavy-footed panic until I reached it. I clung to the willow branch without the strength to pull myself up, but I knew I would not drown now. I felt hollow and sick in my stomach and chest from the effort, and I held on to the branches and waited. When the sick feeling was gone, I pulled myself up into a thick bush and rested again, still holding tight. Then I crawled out, pushed on through the willows and on to the bank.

大学英语(二)作业

《大学英语(二)》作业 Part I. Reading Comprehension Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. Passage 1 Charlie Chaplin has broken all records in making people laugh. No one has so set a whole world laughing as the little man with the walking stick and the overlarge shoes. Much has been written about Chaplin's art and his career, and opinions have ranged widely. But perhaps those who called him "the most general human being of our time" came closest to the truth. Those who have called him a genius stress the timeless and common qualities in his work. It is an art filled with sad elements and deep human feeling, with which an audience cannot help but become involved. It is for these reasons, I believe, that the figure of Charlie has attracted generation after generation. All the writers who give accounts of Chaplin's life agree that Charlie's unhappy early years in the area in London where houses were dirty and worn had a great influence on his development and on the type of films he made. Chaplin himself emphasizes it in his memoirs (回忆录). The more one reads about his earliest period, the more one tends to agree. Indeed, his suffering youth had a lasting influence on him. Chaplin was never afraid to deal with subjects causing much disagreement in his films. He gave a humorous performance on war only a few weeks before the American soldiers came home from World War I in 1918. This was regarded as madness, but the performance was well received. So perfectly did it hit the nail on the head that even the returning soldiers found it impossible to hate it and deeply appreciated this short and humorous performance on what for them had been unpleasant reality. Chaplin gave numerous performances attacking capital governments, satirizing (讽刺) the cruelty of the machine age and even making fun of Hitler. Years after his death, the funny films of motion picture actor and director Charlie Chaplin continue to be popular. He is particularly well known for his success as a creator of humorous presentations that make fun of people, the establishment, or networks. 1. All of the following about Charlie Chaplin are true except __________. A. he was born in the USA B. he was a great film actor C. he had an unhappy early life D. he made fun of Hitler in his films

My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o’clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline(轮廓)of Manhattan (曼哈顿)for the first time and I stared in astonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. My friend helped me unpack at the hotel and then left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day. Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I couldn’t speak a word of English, I couldn’t tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very upset and started to make some gestures(手势), but the waiter didn’t understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights(霓虹灯), and huge crowds of people. I did not feel tired, so I continued to talk around the city. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try. When I returned to the hotel, I was exhausted(筋疲力尽), but I couldn’t sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police sirens(警笛声)during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. It was a very big and interesting city with many tall buildings and big cars, and full of noise and busy people. I also decided right then that I had to learn to speak English. 1. On the way to his hotel, the writer______. a. was silent all the time

新标准大学英语综合教程2原文

新标准大学英语综合教程2原文 UNIT1 College just isn't special any more 1 "If you can remember anything about the 1960s, you weren't really there," so the saying goes. It may be true for those who spent their college years in a haze of marijuana smoke. But there is one thing everyone remembers about the 1960s: Going to college was the most exciting and stimulating experience of your life. 2 In the 1960s, California's colleges and universities had transformed the state into the world's seventh largest economy. However, Berkeley, the University of California's main campus, was also well-known for its student demonstrations and strikes, and its atmosphere of political radicalism. When Ronald Reagan ran for office as governor of California in 1966, he asked if Californians would allow "a great university to be brought to its knees by a noisy, dissident minority". The liberals replied that it was the ability to tolerate noisy, dissident minorities which made universities great. 3 On university campuses in Europe, mass socialist or communist movements gave rise to increasingly violent clashes between the establishment and the college students, with their new and passionate commitment to freedom and justice. Much of the protest was about the Vietnam War. But in France, the students of the Sorbonne in Paris managed to form an alliance with the trade unions and to launch a general strike, which ultimately brought about the resignation of President de Gaulle. 4 It wasn't just the activism that characterized student life in the 1960s. Everywhere, going to college meant your first taste of real freedom, of late nights in the dorm or in the Junior Common Room, discussing the meaning of life. You used to have to go to college to read your first forbidden book, see your first indie film, or find someone who shared your passion for Jimi Hendrix or Lenny Bruce. It was a moment of unimaginable freedom, the most liberating in your life. 5 But where's the passion today? What's the matter with college? These days political, social and creative awakening seems to happen not because of college, but in spite of it. Of course, it's true that higher education is still important. For example, in the UK, Prime Minister Blair was close to achieving his aim of getting 50 per cent of all under thirties into college by 2010 (even though a cynic would say that this was to keep them off the unemployment statistics). Yet college education is no longer a topic of great national importance. Today, college is seen as a kind of small town from
