Encouragement and praise can come in many forms, and some ways are better for child’s development than others. Researchers at the University of Chicago who studied mother-child interactions over the course found that the type of praise children receive affects their attitudes toward challenges later in life. Specifically, praise coming with feedback about their behavior that kids made helped them to deal better with difficult experiences five years later, compared with compliments that focused more on the child himself, like “You’re a good boy. ”

“This is something we suspected would be the case based on a lot of experimental research, and it’s exciting to see it plays out in the real world,” says Elizabeth, a professor of psychology at Temple University, who led the study. “Praising the efforts, actions and work of the kid is going to be more beneficial in their long-term persistence and work in the future. ”

Such “process praise” includes comments such as “You worked really hard” or “You’re doing a great job,” which emphasize the child’s actions. “Person praise” includes comments like “You’re so smart” or “You’re so good,” which focus on a child’s inherent qualities. These distinctions aren’t new in the field of psychology, but exactly how they affect children’s development over the years hasn’t been clear.

As part of the study, researchers visited the homes of more than 50 toddlers between the age of 1 and 3 years old, and filmed their daily interactions with their parents during multiple 90-minute sessions.

Five years later, the researchers followed up with the families, using questionnaires to measure the children’s attitudes toward challenges and problem solving. The children who grew up with more process praise were more open to challenges, and could identify more ways of overcoming difficult problems. While person praise didn’t seem to have any negative effect on the children, process praise teaches children that their talents and abilities can be developed and improved, while person praise sends the message that their abilities are fixed and therefore not easily changed.

24. By hearing “You’re a good boy”, kids may______.

A. get proper feedback from parents

B. pay more attention to themselves

C. have effective interaction with parents

D. be willing to solve problems they met

25. The underlined word distinctions in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to______.

B. different kids should be praised differently

C. process praise is less effective as we expected

D. kids with process praise tend to be more creative

27. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce a better way to praise kids.

B. To compare two different praising ways.

C. To predict the result of process praising.

D. To report the way of praising experiment.

Paying a higher price than usual for a ticket to see a film in 3D is the annoyance of many a cinema-goer’s life.

But there may be a benefit to doing so,as a study has found that 3D films exercise the brain and improve short-term functioning in a similar way to brain-training tests.

The research found that people who watched a movie in 3D improved cognitive(认知的) skills, compared to those who watched it in 2D.

The research was led by neuroscientist(神经学家) Dr Patrick Fagan from Goldsmiths University in London. More than 100 people took part in the experiment, where participants watched Disney film BigHero 6 in either standard format or RealD 3D.

They also carried out a brain-training-style test before and after seeing a section from the film. The test covered memory, reaction times and cognitive function and the results were compared later.

According to the research, which was carried out in partnership with science group Thrill Laboratory, participants experienced a 23 percent increase in cognitive processing,as well as an 11 percent increase in reaction times.

Dr Fagan said that the results showed enough of an improvement in brain function to suggest that 3D could play a part in improving brain power in the future.

“These findings are more significant than you might think,” he said.“It is a fact that people are living longer and there is a noticeable decline in cognitive brain function in old age which can worsen future quality of life. There has never been a better time to look at ways to improve brain function. The initial results of this study show that 3D films may potentially play a role in slowing this decline.”

A second part of the experiment involved those watching the film being fitted with headsets that scanned brain activity and this too showed heightened(加强的) activity when watching 3D.According to the results, participants were seven percent more engaged with what they were watching, adding to argument that 3D movies are more like watching real-life—something Professor Brendan Walker from Thrill Laboratory agreed with.

“As Professor Brendan Walker’s test concluded,3D films are more attractive and heighten the senses—this,in turn, makes the brain run at quicker speeds,” Dr Fagan said.

28. According to the research,people watching a movie in 3D .

A. have a good exercise for their brain

B. lose their short memory of its plots

C. are willing to pay a high price for tickets

D. react the same way as those watching it in 2D

29. What can be learned from the research?

A. Watching 2D films limits brain function.

B. 3D would be a contributing factor in improving brain power.

C. The test was carried out after the whole film was viewed.

D. The participants took the brain-training-style test once.

30. Paragraph 8 is mainly about .

A. the application of 3D

B. the disadvantages of 2D films

C. the change in brain function

D. the significance of the study

31. The text is most likely to appear in .

A. a sports newspaper

B. a biology textbook

C. a science magazine

D. a film review

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world.

Westerners’ understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs.

Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs.

Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou’s winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time.

32. Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps?

A. Because he was injured in his swimming.

B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.

C. Because westerners know a little about TCM.

D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM.

33. Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?

A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.

B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture.

C. Because Western medicine is more effective.

D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.

34. Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4?

A. The methods of planting herbs.

B. The effectiveness of prescription.

C. Lacking in standardization.

D. Its stable functions.

35. The lack of creativity in TCM refers to the fact that.

A. medicine-making companies lack creativity

B. prescriptions are got from the past

C. Western companies are more experienced

D. medicine-making companies lack driving force

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

You want your essay to be the one that is passed around the admissions office—or not. It’s a little bit like the difference between being famous and infamous.

We all know that a truthful,well-written essay that shows how the student has matured is sometimes shared among admissions staffers.36 So how do you make your essay famous instead of infamous?

Here are some basic tips to avoid that infamous essay:

●Avoid the generic (概括的) and get specific.Don’t write that you’re “fully-developed” or that “many people have impacted” you. 37

●Don't repeat information that is elsewhere in your application.38 It is important for the student to use every opportunity to show who they are and impress the admissions office.

● 39 If you have gone through difficult circumstances, you should share your story. But don't blame others. It’s important to show perseverance(毅力).A better essay will talk about how you have dealt with and overcome the obstacles you came across.

●Don’t talk about rankings. Many students love focusing on the numbers when they are writing their “why this college” essay.40 Obviously schools are aware of their rankings. They want to know why you want to attend.

A. They believe they are praising the college by mentioning the fact that the college is highly ranked.

B. It also shows the reader that you are thinking about his or her appreciation of your writing.

C. Don’t complain.

D. For example,it is not necessary to share your participation level in your essay.

E. But I’m guessing that there are a lot more essays that produce laughter and gasps of“not again”.

F. Don’t try to cover everything in an essay.

G. Tell the reader what you’ve done,how you’ve been influenced,and by whom.

书面表达-- 参考范文:

Dear Chris,

I'm glad to learn that you are coming to my school to participate in a communication meeting about Chinese customs in July.
