Unit2(第4讲—第6讲)

be sure of的意思是“对……确信无疑”,例如:

─ Is he going to call us at 9:00?(他会在九点给我们打电话吗?)

─ Yes,I am sure of it.

1)I am sure of his sincerity.

2. Am ericans don't have a corner on the “death” m arket, but m any people feel that the United States leads the world wi th the worst taxes.

have a corner的意思是“垄断”,例如:have a corner on the cotton m arket (垄断棉花市场);have a corner on the black vote(垄断黑人选票)。有时也会见到以in 代替on的用法:have a corner in banking

2)He led the broad jum p with a leap of 26 feet.(他以26 英尺的成绩在跳远中领先。)

2)He put the m oney that his m other gave him in a safe place.(他把妈妈给他的钱放在一个安全的地方。)

3)I don't rem em ber where I put the CD that I bought yesterday.

构成”,它与m ake up of , com pose of 的区别在于:consist of 不可用被动语态,而m ake up of和 com pose of 可以用被动语态。例如:

1) The house consists of 6 room s.

2) The m edical team is m ade up of three doctors and a nurse.

3) The book is com posed of 25 units.

4. Salaried people who earn m ore than a few thousand dollars m ust pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal governm ent.

1) The girl who helped m e with m y English is our m onitor.(帮助我学外语的那个女孩是我们班长。)

2) The m an who knocked at the door just now is m y nex t-door neighbor.(刚才敲门的那个人是我的隔壁邻居。)

3) The boy who was shot to death by his classm ate was only 8.(被同学开枪打死的那个男孩才八岁。)

(The percentage of the tax varies from 14% to 70%.)

(The percentage of students who passed the exam reached 95%.)

(The industrial output increased by 14%.)

Wi th their support,we fulfilled our task ahead of tim e.(由于他们的帮助,我们提前完成了任务。)

1)He was born in May.2)He was born on May 23.

The books are due,I have to return them to the library.

(The price of gold is higher than that of silver.)

8. Other states have a sales tax,whi ch is a percentage charged to any item whi ch you buy in that state.

1) The sun warm s the earth, which m akes it possible for plants and anim als to live.(太阳温暖了大地,这才使动植物有可能生长。)

2)He failed the exam, which made him very disappointed.(他考试没及格,这使他非常失望。)

3)He has a son, who is doing his PH.D in the Uni ted States.(他有一个儿子,在美国读博士学位。)

但是传统语法中通常有这样的规定:当先行词是all,everything,som ething,nothing等不定代词,或被first,only,few,m uch,som e,any,no以及形容词最高级等词修饰时,应该用关系代词that,不用which.例如:

I am interested in all that you told m e.

9. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departm ent, public works and m unicipal buildings.

I have a lot of work to do this afternoon.

10. They say that it spends too m uch on useless and im practi cal program s.

spend too m uch (m oney)on sth的意思是“把太多的钱花在……”,例如:He would spend som e m oney on books every m onth……(他每个月都花一些钱买书。)

He spent a lot of tim e doing the experim ent.(他花了很多时间做实验。)

I was driving a taxi, looking for a customer. While passing New York Hospital, I found a man running down the hospital steps, waving at me. I stopped. The man reached the taxi and jumped in. “The Airport, please,”he said. As always, I wondered about my passenger. Was this man a talker? After a few moments, he started saying, “How do you like driving a taxi?” “It’s OK” I said. “I make a living and meet interesting people sometimes.” “What do you do?” I asked. “I am a doctor at New York Hospital.” Many times during long rides, I’d developed a good relationship with my passengers and received very good advice from them. This time I decided to ask for his help. “Could I ask a favor of you?” He didn’t answer. “I have a son, 15, a good kid. He wants a job this summer. Is it possible that you get one for him?” He still wasn’t talking, and I was starting to feel foolish. Finally, he said, “Well, my students have a summer research project. Maybe he could join in. Have him send me his school record.” He left his address and paid me. It was the last time I ever saw him.

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.
