A

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.

How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they?ll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.

First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It?s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.

Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn?t. Your questions should have a point and help to tel l what sort of pers on you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.

Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can ta ke it as a fact that he?s really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it?s time for you to change the subject.

Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the o ccasion of parting. If you?re saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I?ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don?t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if t hey?ve known you half their life.

56. Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way _______.

A. for you to make more and more new friends

B. to begin your business talks

C. to get the conversation going smoothly

D. for you to make a deep and lasting impression on others

57. After having asked somebody a question, it?ll be polite of you to _______.

A. make clear what kind of person he is

B. listen to his reply attentively

C. wait quietly and patiently for his answer

D. go on asking him more questions

58. Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who _______.

A. are good at making any topic interesting

B. never talk too much or too little

C. always speak in a gentle way

D. know how and when they should change the topic of the talk

59. If you really take delight in meeting someone again, _______.

A. you may take him as your lifelong trustworthy friend

B. it seems necessary for you to let him know it

C. it?s proper for you to give him a second handshake

D. it?ll be helpful for you to have further und erstanding of him

There are robots all around us. Some do very complicated jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. And some do one simple job. When an automatic washing machine is switched on, water pours in. The machine waits until the water is warm enough for washing clothes. It does this by “feedback”(反馈). Information about what is happening is feedback into the robot to tell what to do next. Our eyes, ears and other senses are our feedback. They tell us what is going on around us. So robots are like human beings in two ways.

They work and they have feedback.

In some ways robots are better than human beings. They work quickly and do not make mistakes. They do not get bored doing the same job over and over again. And they never get tired. So robots are very useful in factories. They can be taught to do many different jobs. First their electronic brain must be shown how the job is done. A person moves the robot?s “arms” and “hands” through each part of the job.

The most intelligent robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and sizes of the objects. These robots have computer brains linked to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions. The expensiY: 'Times New Roman'">The

Boxing was long viewed sickly. Generally forbidden by law in earlier days, the fighting was usually done with bare fists, and matches often lasted forty or fifty rounds.

In 1882 John L. Sullivan, a fighter of great power, won the world heavyweight championship from Paddy Ryan in a bare fisted battle marked by hitting, scratching, and biting without any rule. Five years later, while fighting Patsy Cardiff at Minneapolis, Sullivan broke his right arm in the third round, but he continued fighting to the sixth round and won. In 1889, Sullivan defeated Jade Kilrain with his bare fists in another championship fight, winning twenty thousand dollars and a diamond prize medal. His admirers talked then of running him for the next governor, but he traveled to Australia for a boxing tour instead, coming back only to lose his title in a twenty-one-round match with a young Californian named James J. Corbett.

“Gentleman James” victory in this match marked a turning point, for it showed scientific boxing was over strength. But Corbett?s title ended in 1897, when another boxer, Bob Fitzsimmons, in less than three seconds, achieved his feats and then Fitzsimmons knocked out an Irishman, won the heavyweight championship of the world, and invented the terrible “solar plexus punch.”

68. Boxing matches in the early days were ________.

A. short and bloody

C. governed by strict rules B. usually spare-time competitions

D. cruel

69. Sullivan held the world?s heavyweight title for ________.

A. at least seven years C. five years

B. only a year

D. twenty-one years

70. Sullivan?s fight with Kilrain was ________.

A. the first boxing championship match

B. a bare-fisted championship fight

C. the last boxing match to be fought bare-fisted

D. a six-round match

71. Sullivan was so popular that his admirers ________.

A. encouraged him to be a governor

B. raised twenty thousand dollars for him

C. advised him to take boxing tour of Australia

D. refused to believe he could be defeated

“It hurts me more than you”, and “This is for your own good” —these are the statements my mother used to make years ago when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy for us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we?ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Clomps who says of her students—“so passive” —and wonders what has happened. Nothing is demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Clomps, contributes to children?s passivity. “We?re talking about a generation of kids who? vet never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying …go and look it up?, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. It?s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It? s time to take the car aw; tab-stops: 1ay, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it? s for their own good. It?s s time to start telling them no again.

72. Children are becoming more inactive in study because _______.

A. they watch TV too often

C. they have to fulfill too many duties B. they have done too much homework

D. teachers are too strict with them

73. We learn from the passage that the author?s mother used to lay emphasis on _______.

A. learning Latin

C. natural development B. discipline

D. education at school

74. By “permissive period in education” (L.1, Para.2) the author mea ns a time _______.

A. when children are allowed to do what they wish to

B. when everything can be taught at school

C. when every child can be educated

D. when children are permitted to receive education

75. The main idea of the passage is that _______.

A. parents should leave their children alone

B. kids should have more activities at school

C. it?s time to be more strict with our kids

D. parents should always set a good example to their kids

One possible version

Is a Tutor Necessary?

More and more middle school students are having tutors at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it.

Some think it necessary. First of all, it?s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can strengthen what is learnt in class. Besides, it can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What?s more, the purpose of some family teachers is to make money.

In my opinion, whether a tutor is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it?s OK for you to have one. But be sure to choose a good and suitable teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.

Text 10

It doesn?t matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That?s what all doctors thought; until they heard about Al Herpin.

Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. He was 90 years old when doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They expected to find out that he needed sleep of some kind. But they were surprised. Though they watched him every hour of the day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. He did not even own a bed. He never needed one.

The closest that Herpin came to resting was to sit in as rocking chair and read some newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. Herpin offered the only probable explanation of his condition. He remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born.

Herpin died at the age of 94.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
