Eating out is more popular in Britain today than it has ever been. It is reported that British people spend more eating out than cooking for themselves and eating at home. It seems that many British people are becoming more and more interested in how good their food tastes, and also how healthy it is.

However, eating out can also be expensive, so British people do not eat out every night. When having a date with friends or celebrating a birthday, many people like to go to a restaurant, and people also often eat in a restaurant before going to the cinema or the theater.

As in all cultures, there are many rules of manners about eating. The knife and fork should be used in the correct way. It is also impolite to speak with your mouth full when you are eating.

Most British cities have a large collection of food as well as British food, from the very cheap to the very expensive—French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and many, many more.

When people are too tired to cook after work, they often get a “takeaway”. This means that they order from a take-out restaurant by telephone, and then go to get it. Many take-out restaurants also send it to your house. All you have to do is to open the door, pay and eat!

"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't have an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine.", even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that" How are you? "isn't really a question and "Fine." isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".

Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person might be thinking, "No, I disagree. I think you're wrong." But it isn't very polite to

disagree so strongly, so the other person might say "I'm not so sure. "It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.

People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says "I have to go now." Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse, "Someone's at the door." "Something is burning on the stove." The excuse might be real, or it might not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people often don't say exactly that they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's a part of the game of language.

1、When a person in the United States asks "How are you?", he or she wants to hear " ".

A .How are you?

B .Hello.

C .I don't know.

D .Fine.

2、When a person wants to disagree with someone, it is polite to say" ".

A .You're wrong. I disagree.

B .I'm not so sure.

C .I'm sure I disagree.

D .No, I disagree.

3、When a person says "I have to go now. Someone's at the door.", the person may be .

A .giving an excuse

B .hurting someone's feeling

C .talking to a person at the door

D .going to another place

4、One of the rules of the game of language is probably .

A ."Always say what you mean."

B ."Don't disagree with other people."

C ."Never say exactly what you're thinking."

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn't want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at first sight.

1. The writer always refuses to give people directions because ________.

A. she's a stranger to the city

B. she doesn't know the people

C. she has no time to help others

D. she's afraid of giving wrong directions

2. A man stopped the writer to ________.

A. sell her something

B. ask for the time

C. make friends with her

D. ask for the direction

3. The Friendship Building is the place where the writer ________.

A. lives

B. works

C. studies

D. teaches

4. The underlined word “embarrassed” in the last paragraph means “________” in Chinese.

A. 尴尬的

B. 困惑的

C. 激动的

D. 拮据的

5. From the passage, we may infer ________.

A. the writer is too shy to give others directions

B. the writer has a very poor sense of direction

C. the writer never got lost when she was young

D. the man was quite nervous when he saw the writer

A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too. I wasn't even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.

Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.

That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “Mary, you were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you'll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue.”

When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.

I quietly went to Betty's bed. “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue ones.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated you that way today.” And she whispered,“Mommy, that's okay—I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”

That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn't realize how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.

由前句“... and you can see a bank and a post office on the right.”

由文章第一段最后一句“... for you have never come here before.”

Could You Please…? When you visit a foreign country, it is important to know how to ask for help politely. For example, “Where are the restrooms?” are similar requests for directions to a place. Both are correct English, but the first one sounds less polite. That is because it is very direct question. It is not enough to just ask a question correctly. We also need to learn how to be polite by being less direct – or more indirect—when we ask for help. In English, as in Chinese, we change the way we speak when we talk with different people. The expressions you use might depend on whom you are speaking to or how well you know them. If you say to your teacher, “When is the school trip?”, when the school trip is?”, this will sound much more polite. However, it is all right to ask direct questions in some situations, like with your classmates. Usually polite questions are longer and include more language such as “Could you please…?” or “Can I ask…?” It sounds more polite to say,“Peter, could you please tell me your e-mail address?” than “Peter, tell me your e-mail address.” Sometimes we even need to spend time leading in to a request. For example, with a stranger on the street, we might first say,“Excuse me, I wonder if you can help me” or “I’m sorry to trouble you, but ... before asking for helping. It might seem more difficult to speak politely than be direct. However, it is important to learn how to use proper language. This will also help you become better at English. or any other language you wish to speak.
