Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Among the company was a lawyer, a young man of about twenty-five. On being asked his opinion, he said, “Capital punishment and life imprisonment are equally immoral. If I were to make a choice between them, I would rather choose the latter. Anyway, it’s better to live than not to live at all.”

A lively discussion followed. A banker, who was then younger and more nervous than the lawyer, suddenly lost his temper and cried out, “it’s a lie. I bet you two millions. You wouldn’t stick in a cell even for five years.”

“If you mean it,” replied the young lawyer, “I bet I’ll stay there longer; make it fifteen instead of five.”

“Fifteen! Done!” cried the banker. “Gentleman, I bet you two millions.”

“Agreed. Two millions for my freedom,” said the lawyer.

So this wild, ridiculous bet came to pass. The banker could not hide his excitement. During supper he said to the lawyer jokingly, “Come to your senses, young man, before it’s too late. Two millions are nothing to me, but you stand to lose three or four of the best years of your life. I say three or four because you’ll never stick it out any longer. Don’t forget that voluntary imprisonment is much harder to put up with than an enforced one. The idea that you have the right to free yourself any moment will poison your life in the cell. I pity you.”

And now the banker, pacing from corner to corner, recalled all this and asked himself, “Why did I make this bet? What’s the good? The lawyer lost fifteen years of his life and I threw away two millions. Will it convince people that capital punishment is worse or better than imprisonment for life? No, no! Rubbish! On my part, it was the caprice of a well-fed millionaire; on the lawyer’s part, it’s the pure greed of gold.

21. The lawyer would choose life imprisonment because ____.

A. he was younger than the banker

B. capital punishment was immoral

C. it was better than capital punishment

D. the banker would give him $200,000

Passage Two

It was a terrible tragedy, six times more deadly than the Titanic. When the German ship Wilhelm Gustloff was hit by torpedoes (鱼雷) fired from a Russian submarine in the final winter of World War II, more than 10,000 people --- mostly women, children and old people fleeing the final Red Army push into Germany --- were packed aboard. An ice storm had turned the decks into frozen sheets that sent hundreds of families sliding into sea as the ship listed and began to go down. Others desperately tried to put lifeboats down. Some who succeeded fought off those in the water who had the strength to try to get aboard. Most people froze immediately. “I’ll never forget the screams,” says Christa Nutzmann, 87, one of the 1,200 survivors. She recalls watching the ship, brightly lit, slipping into its dark grave --- and rarely mentioned for more than half a century.

The long silence about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was probably unavoidable --- and necessary. By unreservedly confessing their country’s horrible crimes Germans have managed to win acceptance abroad and make peace with their neighbors. Today’s unified Germany is more prosperous and stable than at any time in its long, troubled history. For that, a half century of willful forgetting about painful memories like the German Titanic was perhaps a reasonable price to pay. But even the most politically correct Germans believe that they’ve now earned the right to discuss the full historical record. Not to identify German suffering with that of its victims, but simply to acknowledge a terrible tragedy.

25. Most passengers on board the Wilhelm Gustloff took the voyage to ____.

A. taste the luxury of the ship

B. seek protection in another place

C. escape the cold winter back home

D. enjoy their holidays abroad

26. As the ship began to sink, some passengers ____.

A. set the decks on fire as a signal for help

B. fought fiercely on the decks for lifeboats

C. jumped into sea and swam to a nearby ship

D. prevented others from getting on their lifeboats

27. The Wilhelm Gustloff tragedy remains a near secret for more than half a century because Germans ____.

A. preferred to say nothing about it

B. were requested to keep silent about it

C. spared not effort to cover up the story

D. were denied access to the whole story

28. It can be inferred from the passage that Germans no longer think that ____.

A. it is too early to claim responsibility for the Wilhelm Gustloff tragedy

B. the German tragedy is a reasonable price to pay for the nation’s past

C. they will be misunderstood if they talk about the German tragedy

D. Germany is responsible for the horrors it caused during World War II

Passage Three

As The Swordsman started showing on Hunan Satellite TV last month, criticism soon followed. The use of visual effects was excessive and the story line was weak and lacked originality, critics said.

In fact, the new adaptation of Louis Cha’s (Jin Yong) classic novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer may be too “original”. Without the unmistakable characters, you would think it’s just another historical series combining KongFu with romance.

Who wouldn’t find it ridiculous to see Dongfang Bubai — a woman in this version — fall for the hero Linghu Chong and try to steal him from Ren Yingying? With the plot so strangely twisted, the essence and spirit of the original story have been goes.

So what is it that we look for in Chinese Wuxia fictions (武侠小说) like The Smiling, Proud Wanderer? What ’s in these stories that attracts the interest of tens of thousands of fans and makes them instant classics? Typically, the heroes in the fictions don ’t serve a lord or rely on the aristocracy. They often belong to a lower social class and are loners who have mastered the martial arts, often to a superhuman degree. This combination of loners and superhuman powers is enough to appeal to many teenagers looking for their place in the world.

But more importantly, their righteousness, loyalty, courage and disregard for wealth put a spotlight on Wuxia heroes, making them superhero-like icons for many fans. These heros are bound by a code of chivalry that requires them to correct any wrongs — the philosophy of Xia. To understand the concept of Xia from a Western perspective, consider the Robin Hood mythology: an honorable and generous individual who disobeys authority puts his excellent archery skills to use for the general good rather

than personal ends.

Some say the traditional concept of Xia is less relevant in today’s society and Xuxia stories need to change in order to attract new fans. However, most of the characteristics of Xia are similar to Confucian values, which have influenced China for thousands of years and form the foundation of Chinese culture — they will always be relevant. Furthermore, from the 1970s, writers such as Cha and Liang Yusheng founded the new school of the modern Wuxia genre. Besides the theme of Xia they introduced elements of mystery and romance to their stories. Romance, which frequently appears in Cha’s works, is a big reason we love the master’s stories. But an emphasis on romance doesn’t mean converting a classic Wuxia fiction into a rotten and sour melodrama like The Swordsman, nor is it an excuse to produce another adaptation to attract new audiences.

29. The Swordsman ______.

A. is financed by Hunan Satellite TV

B. fails to content the most audience

C. is accordance with the Smiling, Proud Wanderer.

D. goes in deep with the essence and spirit of Wuxia

30. The word “original” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.

A. creative

B. different

C. exaggerated D . primary

31. Which of following is NOT the reason why Wuxia fictions are attractive?

A. The fictions are classic and interesting.

B. Heroes don’t cater with authorities.

C. Someone in lower class could be a superhero.

D. The stories express the positive outlooks and values.

32. Robin Hood is mentioned in Para. 5 ______.

A. to describe how to disobey authorities

B. to criticize TV series the Swordsman

C. to contrast the difference between the West and the East

D. to explain the meaning of the term Xia.

33. In the new style of modern Wuxia, ______.

A. Xia is still the subject

B. Mystery and love make fictions readable

C. Mystery frequently appears in Cha’s works

D. Romance is superior to the essence and spirit

34. What’s the last paragraph mainly talking about?

A. Wuxia fictions need changing

B. Wuxia fictions influence our culture

C. Wuxia fictions are rotten and sour

D. Wuxia fictions keep pace with social development

Passage Four

A new Harvard study shows that immigrant boys and girls fare very differently in the outside world. When it comes to schooling, the Herrera boys are no match for the Herrera girls. Last week, four years after she arrived from Honduras, Martha, 20, graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. She managed decent grades while working 36 hours a week at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. Her sister, Marlin, 22, attends a local community college and will soon be a certified nurse assistant. The brothers are a different story. Oscar, 17, was asked to leave the school two years ago for carrying a knife and later dropped out of a different school. The youngest, Jonathan, 15, is now in a juvenile boot camp (少管所) after running into trouble with the law. “The boys get sidetracked (走向旁道) more,” says the kids ’ mother, Suyapa Landaverde. “The girls are more confident.”

It is normal. Immigrant girls consistently outperform boys, according to the preliminary findings of a just-completed, five-year study of immigrant children —the largest of its kind, including Latino (拉丁裔), Chinese and Haitian kids —by Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Though that trend holds for U.S. born kids as well, the reasons for the immigrants are different. The study found that immigrant girls are better at straddling (跨越) cultures than boys. “The girls are able to retain some of the protective features of their native culture” because they’re kept closer to the hearth, says Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, “while they maximize their acquisition of skills in the new culture” by helping their parents navigate it.

Consider the kids’ experiences in school. The study found that boys face more peer pressure to adopt American youth culture—the dress, the slang, the disdain for education. They’re disciplined more often and, as a result, develop more adversarial relationships with teachers—and the wider society. They may also face more prejudices. One teacher interviewed for the study said that the “cultural awareness training” she received as part of her continuing education included depictions of Latino boys as “aggressive” and “really macho” and of the girls as “pure sweetness”.

Gender shapes immigrant kids’ experiences outside school as well. Often hailing from traditional

cultures, the girls face greater domestic obligations. They also frequently act as “cultural ambassadors”, translating for parents and mediating between them and the outside world, says Carola Suarez-Orozco. An unintended consequence: “The girls get forced into a responsible role more than the boys do”. Take Christina Im, 18, a junior at Fairfax who arrived from South Korea four years ago. She ranks ninth in a class of 400 students and still finds time to fix dinner for the family and work on Saturdays at her mother's clothing shop. Her brother? “He plays computer games,” says Im.

The Harvard study bears a cautionary note: If large numbers of immigrant boys continue to be alienated academically—and to be clear, plenty perform phenomenally—they risk sinking irretrievably into an economic underclass. Oscar Herrera, Martha’s dropout brother, may be realizing that. “I'm thinking of returning to school,” he recently told his mother. He ought to look to his sisters for guidance.

35. In the opening paragraph, the author introduces his topic by _____.

A. showing the similarity

B. justifying an assumption

C. making a comparison

D. explaining a phenomenon

36. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Immigrant girls receive no more pressure from people at their age than boys when adopting youth culture of American.

B. Immigrant students are always excluded, no matter boys or girls.

C. Immigrant girls always have worse relationship with the teachers.

D. Immigrant boys get more pressure from their classmates, for their dressing, way of talking and attitude toward education are quite different from people as at their age.

37. The statement “they also frequently act as ‘cultural ambassadors’” (Paragraph 4) implies that _____.

A. they work as a translator for their parents

B. they help their parents have a better understanding of the foreign culture

C. they encourage their parents to go into the outside world

D. their parents help them realize their dream of becoming an ambassador.

38. Immigrant boys do not fare well in the outside world because of the following reasons, except that _____.

A. American youth culture has a bad influence on the boys

B. people have prejudice against them

C. their sense of responsibility is not as strong as that of the girls

D. they do not get well along with the teachers and the outside world

39. Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco have eventually found in their study that _____.

A. the immigrant boys should not be allowed to go into the outside world

B. the immigrant boys have no judgment about the youth culture

C. the immigrant girls do a better job than the immigrant boys

D. the immigrant boys should be severely disciplined

40. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. All the dropouts should receive good education.

B. Many immigrant boys are likely to fall into trouble in the future.

C. Schooling education has been neglected.

D. More attention should be paid to the immigrant children.

Section B

Direction: in this section, you are required to read one quoted blog and the comments on it. The blog and comments are followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.

Over the last 100 years, global temperatures have warmed by about 0.74℃ on average. The change may seem minor, but it ’s happening very quickly.

On the Earth Day, here’s a look at some of the ways people and other living things are responding to global warming.

1. Moving the military northward

As the Arctic ice opens up, the world turns its attention to the resources below. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, 30 percent of the world’s undiscovered natural gas and 13 percent of his undiscovered oil are under this region. As a result, military action in the Arctic is heating up. Several nations, including the U.S., are drilling troops in the far north, preparing for increased border patrol and disaster response efforts in a busier Arctic.

2. Altering breeding seasons

As temperatures shifts, penguins(企鹅) are shifting their breeding seasons. A March 2012 study found that penguins are adapting more quickly to warmer weather.

3. Changed “high season” at national parks

When’s the busiest time to see the Grand Canyon? The answer has changed over the decades as

spring has started earlier. Peak national park attendance has shifted forward more than four days, on average, since 1979. Today, the highest number of visitors now swarm the Grand Canyon on June 24, compared with July 4 in 1979.

4. More mobile animals

Species are straying from their native habitats at an unprecedented rate: 17.6 kilometers toward the poles per decade. Areas where temperature is increasing the most show the most straying by native organisms.

Comment 1:

Yes, the climate has changed many, many times I the past. But what’s important is the RATE of that change. It took over 6,000 years for the earth to thaw out of the last ice age. 6,000 years! And that was just a merely 6 degree total temperature increase.

Comment 2:

Not sure if Global Warming truly exists or not, but either way, humans sure do know how to screw up a planet.

Comment 3:

A primary law of nature is to adapt or perish. Why do these UN people seem to believe that the earth’s climate should be unchangeable? It has always changed and always will. Man’s impact is small, which is why even drastic measures will do us more harm than good.

Comment 4

Climate change is a cyclical(循环的) natural phenomenon that has occurred for millions of years before we arrived and will continue after we ’re gone. Those who think man has the power to impact weather are too arrogant.

Comment 5

Even if you don’t believe in global warming, you should still take good care of the planet that God gave us to charge over. Recycling, talking only what you need and not being wasteful, driving a car that gets more than 11 miles per gallon, this stuff isn’t that hard to do.

41. The main idea of the quoted blog is that ______.

A. global temperatures have changed quickly

B. global warming may cause military conflict in Arctic

C. animals are more sensitive to global warming than man

D. global warming is already changing the world.

A. explore the gas and oil there.

B. contest the natural recourses there

C. increase border patrol services there

D. practice in disaster rescue.

43. Among the 5 comments, how many of them seem to be indifferent to the global warming issue?

A. 1.

B. 2.

C. 3.

D. 4

44. Among all the comments, which seems to be most worried about the global warming?

A. Comment 1.

B. Comment 2

C. Comment 4

D. Comment 5

45. According to the writer of Comment 5, we should take good care of the planet by ______.

A. taking actions to prevent global warming

B. driving as little and as slowly as possible

C. saving as much natural resources as possible

D. working hard to prevent wasting

Between labor and play stands work. A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society is necessary labor is from his own point of view voluntary play. Whether a job is to be classified as labor or work depends, not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual who undertakes it. The difference does not, for example, coincide with the difference between a manual and a mental job; a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a laborer. Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure.

Paper one Part I Dialogue Communication Section A 1.选A。 3.选A。 5.选A。 Section B Dialogue Comprehension 6.选A。 7.选A。 on one’s own的意思是“靠自己”。 Part II V ocabulary 11. 辨义:A.denounced斥责;C.welcomed欢迎;D.exclaimed嚷叫起来,大声叫。 12. 辨义:A.foresee预见;B.run out用完;D.foretell预言。 13.选A。画线词back up,在这里的意思是:依靠,支持;其近义词为A support。 提高;C.investigate 调查;D.challenge挑战。

Part I Dialogue Communication Paper One Section A 1.选A。 2.选A。 Section B 6.选A。 warm up是“热身”。 8.选A。 Part II V ocabulary Section A 11. 辨义:A.initiated发起;C.cured 治愈;D.complicated复杂化。 12. 辨义:A.incorrect不正确、错误的;B.biased 有偏见的;C.vague模糊的;D.dull枯燥的。 13. 辨义:A.put off推迟;B.put on穿上;C.put down放下、镇压;D.put out(使人)烦恼的。 其含义等于选项C.preventive measures(预防性措施)。 辨义:A.required treatment所要求的治疗;B.free service免费服务;D.new therapy新的疗法。
