Ⅲ.阅读理解

Words:408 难度系数:★★★建议用时:9分钟

As bananas ripen, the green skin turns yellow gradually.Chemical changes occur in the flesh of the fruit as well:starch(淀粉) changes to sugar;pectin(果胶) breaks down, losing its stiffness;and the flesh softens.

Is ripening fruit a self-contained system,or is the rate of these changes affected by the environment? We designed the experiment below to see if different atmospheres, produced by different packaging, affected the rate of ripening. You will vary the atmosphere surrounding unripe bananas and observe the effect on the ripening process.

Now set up the bananas in their environments as follows:

1.Put two green bananas in a paper bag and fold the top over to seal out the air. 2.Put one green banana and the very ripe banana in the other paper bag and fold over the top.

3.Put two green bananas in a plastic bag and seal it.

4.Wrap (包) one green banana tightly in a plastic bag.

5.Leave one green banana exposed to the air.

Leave the fruit alone for four or five days to ripen.Ripening fruit “breathes”.This means that it takes up oxygen and gives off CO2.Oxygen is extremely important and necessary for the chemical reactions involved in ripening. In addition, ripening fruit gives off another gas, called ethylene(乙烯).Not only is ethylene a product of ripening fruit,it also promotes the further ripening of the fruit.

Paper bags tend to keep the ethylene in,but they allow oxygen and ethylene to pass through slowly.Plastic bags do not allow the free flow of oxygen or ethylene. In this experiment, the green banana in paper bag with the ripe banana should ripen most quickly. The green bananas in the paper bag should ripen faster than the bananas in the plastic bag.The banana left exposed to air has an unlimited supply of oxygen,so it will turn brown most quickly. You will notice that the side of this banana that rests on the counter will ripen more quickly than the other sides, because it has the closest contact (接触) with its own ethylene. The banana that is tightly wrapped in plastic has no oxygen supply and should ripen most slowly. Now can you see why bananas are sealed in plastic in many supermarkets?

Games originally are entertainment.Contemporary games are very realistic and for this reason they are a source of great experience for the player and develop the imagination.Games are entertainment and even more than that. The statistics(统计) of the New York University led by Green claim that the player preferring active games

get improvement of some types of brain activity. In particular, game players deal with problems of simultaneously (同时地) tracking several moving objec ts at the average level of 30% better than people who do not play active computer video games. The “gaming” violent experience may not be the cause of violent behavior in reality.None of the playing experience will become the priority in making important decisions concerning problems in real life.A game is an abstraction(虚拟物).A player gets abstract tasks and acts according to abstract rules. Games are also the possibility to be however a person wants to be and to rest from the outside world for some time. But what if a person gets so much excited with the game scenes that he becomes violent in reality? Then,it proves that the games cause people to become violent in reality. But a psychologically healthy person will never confuse these two different worlds.A game is a virtual world with visual images very similar to human. These images represent by themselves nothing but playing obstacles(障碍).A game may potentially give the opportunity to “destroy the obstacles” that may not be destroyed according to the rules but it is more about personal choice whether to do it or not. This leads us to the conclusion that violence is not a consequence but the cause.People who are originally trended to violence may get into a temper by games and perform violence in the “real world”.But in this case violence in games is a simple justification(理由) of the violent nature of the players.

【解题导语】本文论述游戏是娱乐形式却远不止供人娱乐,还能提高打游戏者同时注意观察多个移动物体的能力,因为心理健康的人不会混淆游戏中的虚拟世界和生活中的现实世界。

2.In the first paragraph the author used the statistics to prove that ________. A.games can provide experience for the players

B.games can help develop players’ imagination

C.games can cause violent behavior

D.games are more than entertainment

解析:选D。确定段落主题(论点)。第一段第三句句意为:游戏是娱乐但又远不止娱乐。这是本段的论点,下一句用统计数字作为论据来论证这一观点。

3.What is the author’s attitude towards the “computer games”?

A.“Violent games” can lead to the performance of violence in the“real world.”B.Violence is not a consequence of the “computer games” bu t the cause. C.Games are just entertainment and nothing more.

D.The “virtual world” and the “real world” are just the same.

4.The best title for this passage is ________.

A.Violent games cause violence

B.Games:good or bad?

C.The cause of violence

D.The consequence of games

Frederick Law Olmsted (1822~1903),a Connecticut farm boy,saw his first public park in Liverpool,England,as he accompanied his brother on a walking tour.He was impressed by the park’s winding paths, open fields, lakes and bridges.Perhaps the most wonderful things of all was that the park was open to everyone.

A moment beginning in 1840 to set aside park land on New York City’s Manhattan Island had a successful result in 1856 with the purchase of 840 acres of rocky and swampy(沼泽) land, bought with about $5 million in state funds.Olmsted’s chance meeting with a project organizer led to his applying for the job of park manager. In 1857 Olmsted was appointed manager of the proposed park, and the clearing of the site began. Calvert Vaux,a British architect, asked Olmsted to collaborate with him on a park design, and Olmsted agreed.Vaux saw the park as a work of art, while Olmsted saw the park as a place for people to escape the noise of the city.Together they invented a plan that would give the persons and animals living in the city a quiet, green park and would also preserve and increase the good qualities of the natural features of the land. The commissioners voted in favor of Vaux and Olmsted’s plan, and in 1858,the two became the official designer s of New York City’s Central Park.

It took millions of cartloads of topsoil to build Central Park’s gentle slopes, shady glens, and steep rocky ravines.Five million trees were planted,a water-supply system was laid, and bridges, arches, roads and paths were constructed. The park officially opened in 1876,and today, well over a century later, people still escape the noise of the city in Olmsted and Vaux’s great work of art.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2. What might people benefit from the new technology mentioned above? A. Living a life free from stress. B. Improving the heart function gradually. C. Accessing health services for free. D. Knowing abnormal blood pressure earlier. 3. What can be done for a better Anura? A. Equipping phones with better cameras. B. Allowing phones to record longer videos. C. Collecting data from more diverse samples. D. Persuading participants not to take medicine. 4. Why does the author write this text? A. To predict future applications of TOI. B. To introduce TOI and an app related. C. To describe functions of cameras on phones. D. To evaluate the quality of an app called Anura. II 单项选择(必修五U1-U5;满分15分,每小题1分) 5. 高三英语考试题

高二英语 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) A Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse. Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour. 1.Halley made his discovery________. A.by doing experiments B.by means of his own careful observation C.by using the work of other scientists D.by chance 2.Halley made a surprising but correct prediction in the year________. A.1704B.1705C.1706D.1707 3.This text in general is about________. A.Halley and other scientists B.the orbit of a comet C.Newton and Halley D.Halley and his discovery 4.Which of the following is TRUE? A.Edmund Halley was an American scientist. B.Halley made his discovery by doing experiment. C.Isaac Newton was a famous mathematician. D.The orbit of a comet had the shape of a round. B Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away. Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place. Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away. 5. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of . A. loud noises B. some crops C. video cameras D. angry bees 6. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy . A. works by herself in Africa B. needs to test more elephant groups C. has stopped elephants eating crops D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms 7. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive? A. To record the sound of bees. B. To make a video of elephants. C. To see if elephants would run away. D. To find out more about the behavior of bees. 8. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees. B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place. C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them. D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.
