A nine-year-old kid was sitting at his desk when suddenly there was a puddle (水坑) between his feet and the front of his trousers was wet. He thought his heart was going to stop because he couldn’t possibly imagine how this had happened. It had never happened before, and he knew that when the boys found out he would never hear the end of it. When the girls found out, they would never speak to him again as long as he lived.

He prayed this prayer, “Dear God, I need help now! Five minutes from now I’m dead meat!” He looked up from his prayer and here came the teacher with a look in her eyes that said he had been discovered. As the teacher was walking toward him, a classmate named Susie was carrying a goldfish bowl full of water. Susie tripped (绊倒) in front of the teacher and dumped (倒) the bowl of water in the boy’s lap. The boy pretended to be angry, but all the w hile was saying to himself, “Thank you, Lord!”

Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy was the object of sympathy. The teacher rushed him downstairs and gave him gym shorts to put on while his trousers dried out. All the other children were on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy was wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his had been transferred (转移) to someone else—Susie. She tried to help, but they told her to get out.

The Rockford police chief and some city officials want to install (安装) video cameras in all 100 police cars. They think this will reduce the number of lawsuits (法律诉讼). In the last five years, Rockford has paid out more than five million dollars to settle about 40 lawsuits.

The chief said, “If cameras had been in those cars, we wouldn’t hav e had to pay one cent. We’re always pulling over drunks or drug users who try to fight the police or shoot them. Then they always claim (声称) that the police start beating them first or start shooting at them first.”

The cost of installing cameras will be about $500 each. The city council (委员会) will vote on the proposal (提议) next Monday. Ten of the 13 council members said that they like the idea. One member said that it makes good sense.

The police officers enthusiastically support camera use. One officer said that too many people think the police often lie; cameras would show citizens that police tell the truth. “The money that we’ve been spending on lawsuits will be better spent on more cameras,” said one officer.

Citizen opinions to the idea of police car cameras are mixed. One person said that the police should have started doing this years ago when video cameras were invented. But an elderly man strongly objected. “These police are trying to stick their nose into everything,” he said. He was going to attend the council meeting to condemn the proposal. He hoped that other citizens would join him.

Most recently, it’s very common in students who need a parent present for job interviews.

Naturally, it’s easy to blame the students in these situations, but the bigger problem is us. We—as parents—are so eager to shelter our kids that we fail to realize that this in itself is harming them. As the mother of two young sons, I have to remind myself constantly that the biggest responsibility I have as a parent is to help them develop the skills needed to live in, to live without me. So, I’ll let them fail.

I’ll le t them fail because as long as they are safe and warm inside their comfort zones, they

will never grow. And failure—along with loss, heartbreak, disappointment, etc.—will be part of growth for them. Call me the anti-tiger mom, but leaving them alone is my way of helping them become equipped to fit in this world as we know it today. From terrorism and seemingly endless natural disasters, to our national debt and beyond, if we expect the next generation to stand up to the very real problems of our time, we need to stop feeding them and start teaching them how to fish.

My children now are becoming little masters of compromise, but they try to negotiate (协商) everything now. It’s a small price to help them learn a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives, in cluding when I don’t accompany them on job interviews.

64. Why do parents accompany their kids on job interviews?

A. Because they want to protect their kids from difficulties.

B. Because they think they can help them on the questions.

C. Because their kids are too shy to attend interviews.

D. Because their kids strongly request them to do so.

65. According to the author, what is beneficial to kids’ development?

A. Sheltering them.

B. Keeping them safe.

C. Leaving them alone. C. Blaming them.

66. Why does the author stress failure in kids’ life?

A. To make them stronger than other kids.

B. To help them grow in this tough world.

C. To help them develop all social skills.

D. To make them learn to compromise.

67. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A. Never Shelter Your Kids

B. Let Your Kids Fail

C. Be Eager to Grow Up

D. Live Without Parents

Hospital emergency rooms treat injured fingers all the time. Without treatment, a bad cut can lead to permanent damage. But how should a person know when a bleeding cut is serious enough to require medical attention?

Here are some tips from Dr. Martin Brown, chairman of the department of emergency at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia.

1. Laceration (裂口)

The medical term for a cut or tear in the skin is a laceration. 71 A long cut on a finger can likely be treated without a visit to a doctor if the wound is not very deep. However, if you have a short but deep laceration, you will need professional attention.

2. Fingertips cut off

Some injuries, like a fingertip that gets cut off, might even need surgery (外科手术) to repair.

72 More often, cutting down the bone is what is done because reattaching a fingertip is often not successful.

3. Bleeding

73 Small cuts usually produce what is known as venous (静脉的) bleeding. This means the blood flows steadily from the injury. The bleeding will often stop when pressure is put on the wound. In most cases holding direct pressure with a clean cloth for four to five minutes would do. But if a cut appears to be pumping blood out with some force, this may be a sign of arterial (动脉的) bleeding. 74

Finally, always keep this in mind: even a cut that does not require medical attention must be kept clean to prevent infection. Small cuts should be cleaned gently with clean water. 75 Then cover it with a clean, dry bandage.

A. How a wound bleeds can be a sign of how serious it is.

B. That requires a specialist to either cut down the bone or reattach the fingertip.

C. This kind of injury should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possible.

D. The first signs of this disease include difficulty opening the mouth.

E. Use a washcloth to clean the area if the wound is dirty. ks5u

F. With a cut finger, holding the hand above the heart can reduce the loss of blood.

G. The length is usually not as important as the depth.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. The most effective means to solve this problem is that you can make a “to do” list. For example, you can write “Finish home work before Saturday night”on your plan. If you manage to finish it, you can reward yourself. Otherwise, punish yourself. What’s more, you can find a person to remind you to finish your work efficiently from time to time. Different people have different efficient times. But it doesn’t matter what time it is. Just don’t waste time, following the schedule strictly. Last but not the least, do it now, just from now. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G.
