Here's to the start of an incredible new semester!篇3My Awesome Summer Vacation!Hi there! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. I just started 5th grade and my teacher asked us to write about what we did over summer vacation. I had the best summer ever so I'm really excited to tell you all about it!The last day of school was May 25th and I couldn't wait for summer to start. My parents had promised we could go on a big family trip this year since my little brother Billy was finally old enough to travel. On June 1st, we all piled into our mini-van and headed out for our epic road trip adventure!Our first stop was Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I had never seen anything like it before - there were bubbling mud pots, shooting geysers, and pools of bright blue and orange water. The whole place smelled like rotten eggs from all the sulphur, but it was still awesome! We went hiking every day and saw bison, elk, and even a black bear from a safe distance. One night we stayed in a cozy cabin in the woods and bundled up to watch the stars - I've never seen so many in the night sky before.After five days of exploring Yellowstone, we drove west to Seattle to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins. They live right nearthe ocean and we spent two days walking along the beach, building sandcastles, and searching for seashells. My aunt took us on a crazy ferry ride across the Puget Sound one day - I got a little seasick but it was still fun. We also went up in the famous Space Needle which had the most incredible views of the whole city!From Seattle, we headed down the Pacific coast into California. We stopped for a few days in the Redwood Forests and I've never felt so tiny before as I looked up at those massive trees towering hundreds of feet above me. We had a picnic in the perfect circle of one fallen, hollow redwood log that was wider than our mini-van! After the Redwoods, we spent a whole week in Los Angeles visiting my other aunt. We did all the cool touristy stuff like going to the Santa Monica Pier, hiking in the Hollywood Hills, seeing the Walk of Fame, and even visiting a movie studio!The highlight of the whole trip though was when we made it down to San Diego for the last few days. We spent two full days at the world-famous San Diego Zoo seeing all the amazing animals up close. My favorite was definitely the giant pandas - they were so cute as they munched on bamboo all day. We even got to watch the zookeepers give one of the baby pandas a bath, which was hilarious. On our very last day, we visited SeaWorldwhere I got to touch a velvety stingray and see the spectacular Shamu whale show.After nearly a month on the road, we finally made the long drive back home to Ohio. I had the best time on our trip but I have to admit, I was ready to sleep in my own bed again! We took over 2,000 pictures and I've been working on my travel scrapbook to remember all the incredible places we went. My summer break was definitely the most fun and adventurous one yet!Well, that's the story of my awesome summer vacation. We traveled over 6,000 miles and I got to see so many cool places that I had only read about in books before. My feet might be tired from all that walking and hiking, but my heart is full of amazing memories that will last a lifetime. I already can't wait for summer to come again next year - who knows where we'll go next?!篇4My First Semester of English in CollegeHi there! My name is Timmy and I'm in the 5th grade. My big sister Sarah just started college this year and she told me allabout her first semester of English class. It was really interesting to hear about!Sarah said the first day of English was pretty nerve-wracking. The class had like 200 students and it met in this huge lecture hall. The professor walked in looking very serious and introduced himself as Dr. Patterson. Sarah said he seemed kind of intimidating at first.The first few weeks were mostly about going over the syllabus and course expectations. They had to buy a giant textbook that was super heavy. Sarah said just carrying that book around in her backpack made her back hurt! They also had to get a bunch of literature books for the class like books of poems, short stories, and plays.One of the first big assignments was to write a personal narrative essay. Sarah's was about the time our family went camping and a bear got into our cooler at night! She said it was tough trying to stretch that story out to the 5 page minimum length. Who knew writing about a bear eating your snacks could be so hard?Then they started getting into analyzing poetry, which Sarah said was pretty confusing at first. They had to look for things like symbolism, metaphors, and deeper meanings. Sarah showed meone poem they went over about a road diverging in the woods. She said the professor spent like an entire lecture talking about how it was really about making tough choices in life. To me, it just seemed like a poem about a walking trail!After poetry, they did short stories for a few weeks. The stories all seemed to have really weird plots and open-endings where you had to figure out what happened. One was about a lady who went crazy taking care of her sick mom. Another was about a family who left their baby home alone and it SPOILER ALERT turned out okay in the end, but they didn't tell you that until the very last line! Sarah said having to analyze all those sneaky twist endings gave her a headache.Next up was drama and reading plays. They had to go see a couple of plays performed live which was kind of cool. But then they had to write all these essays analyzing the symbolism of certain props or why characters made certain choices. Sarah said it was hard because in real life, people don't always have some deep symbolic meaning behind everything they do.In between all those literature units, they also had to write a few research papers which was probably the most work. Sarah had to spend hours and hours in the library looking through books and online databases to find sources. Then she had tomake sure she cited everything properly and created references pages and all that jazz. She told me I'll hate doing research papers when I'm older!One of the last big projects of the semester was giving a presentation on an author they studied. Sarah got assigned Toni Morrison and had to dress up as her and give a 10 minute speech pretending to be Toni Morrison talking about her life and books. She bought this pretty cool grey wig and glasses to look the part!Overall, Sarah said English class was one of the tougher courses her first semester. But she also said she learned a ton about writing, literature, analyzing texts, and doing research. She's kind of dreading having to take another English course next year though. I don't blame her - that class seemed like a lot of work!Anyway, that's the scoop on Sarah's English class from a 5th grader's perspective. Even though some of it went over my head, it was still fascinating to hear her talk about it all. I can't wait until I'm old enough to take crazy classes like that in college too. It was sooo much fun and I can't wait to share the whole story with you.It all started at the very end of last school year. My parents told me and my little sister Sarah that we were going to go on a huge road trip for almost the entire summer! I was super excited but also a little nervous because I had never been on such a long trip before. Where were we going to go? What were we going to do? I had a million questions!A couple weeks later, after school finally ended, we got everything packed up in our car and hit the road bright and early one morning. The first place we went was to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins who live way out in California - that's like on the total opposite side of the country from where we live in Maryland! The drive took forever and ever, but it was still pretty cool getting to see so many different states and cities out the window as we cruised along the highways.When we finally made it to California after what felt like years of driving, it was awesome! My aunt and uncle live rightnear the beach, so we went swimming and built sandcastles pretty much every day. My cousins taught me how to bodyboard and boogie board too. At first the waves kind of scared me because they were so big, but after a little while I got the hang of it and it was a blast! The ocean water was freezing cold compared to what I'm used to back home, but I didn't even care.I just loved being in the warm California sunshine and playing in the salty sea.After a fun-filled week in California, we hit the road again for the next stop on our big adventure - the Grand Canyon! Can you believe I had never actually been there before? It's just an absolutely massive hole in the ground, and I mean that in the best way possible. The Grand Canyon is so unbelievably huge and beautiful that it's hard to even fully take in. We went on a couple of different hikes along the canyon rim and got to see the most breathtaking views imaginable. The rocks, valleys, and layers of the canyon seemed to stretch on forever into the distance. We even got to watch the most stunning sunset I've ever seen - the entire canyon was bathed in vibrant shades of red, orange, and pink as the sun dipped below the horizon. It looked almost fake, like something out of a painting or movie! Definitely an unforgettable experience.From the Grand Canyon we drove up to Wyoming to go stay at a dude ranch for a few days. I had honestly no idea what a dude ranch even was before we went there. Basically it's this big farm-kind-of-place out in the middle of nowhere where you can go horseback riding, go hiking and camping, see animals, and experience life on an old-fashioned ranch. This part was my dad's favorite because he just loves anything to do with the outdoors and nature.I'll admit, at first I wasn't too thrilled about having to wake up at the crack of dawn every morning to go riding horses and doing chores on the ranch. But you know what? It ended up being a ton of fun! The wranglers who worked there taught me and Sarah how to properly saddle up and ride the horses. We went on trail rides every day up into the mountains and saw tons of cool wildlife like elk, bighorn sheep, and even a black bear from a safe distance! In the evenings we'd roast marshmallows over a campfire and listen to the ranch hands tell stories and strum their guitars. As much as I complained about it at first, I ultimately had a blast.After our time on the dude ranch, we got back in the car and headed up to our final destination of the trip - Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana. I couldn't wait becauseI had learned all about Yellowstone in school and it just seemed like the coolest place on Earth! Man, was it ever. Last year, my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was the best. She would always tell us funny stories and let us play games during class. I really miss her.During the summer, I went on a road trip with my family. We drove all the way to Grandma's house, which is like a million miles away! Okay, maybe not a million, but it sure felt like it. The car ride was super long, and my little brother kept asking, "Are we there yet?" every five minutes. Then, we'd climb up into the treehouse and pretend we were brave explorers on a jungle adventure. Sometimes, we would sit by the pond and feed the fish breadcrumbs from Grandma's kitchen.One day, we even caught a tiny frog! We carefully put it in a bucket and showed it to Grandma. She said we could keep it as a pet if we promised to take good care of it. We named him Mr. Ribbits and made him a cozy home in an old aquarium. Feeding him crickets was kind of gross, but also really cool. I've never had a pet frog before!Too soon, our vacation was over, and we had to say goodbye to Grandma and Mr. Ribbits. I was sad to leave, but I was also excited to get back home and get ready for the new school year. Mom took me shopping for new clothes, notebooks, pencils, and a really cool lunchbox with superheroes on it.Finally, the first day of school arrived. I woke up super early because I was too excited to sleep. I put on my brand new outfit – a red t-shirt with a dinosaur on it and my favorite jeans with therips in the knees. After gulping down a quick breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes (my favorite!), Mom walked me to the bus stop.When the bus pulled up, I gave Mom a big hug and ran up the stairs, searching for a good seat. I found one near the back, next to my best friend, Tommy. We hadn't seen each other all summer, so we had a lot of catching up to do. I told him all about my adventures at Grandma's house, and he told me about the awesome camping trip his family went on.At school, we lined up outside our new classroom, and I felt a little nervous flutter in my belly. What if the teacher wasn't nice? What if the other kids were mean? Tommy must have sensed how I was feeling because he gave me a reassuring smile and a thumbs up. With my best friend by my side, I knew everything would be okay.The classroom door opened, and a smiling woman greeted us. "Hello, boys and girls! I'm Mrs. Parker, and I'll be your teacher this year. In the other corner, there was a big aquarium with a bunch of fish swimming around. She grew up on a farm with lots of animals, which is why she decided to get a classroom pet for us –a cute little hamster named Nibbles! We all got a chance to gently pet Nibbles and watch him stuff his cheeks with food. He was so funny and adorable.After that, we went around the room and each student got to share something special about themselves. I was a little shy at first, but then I remembered how much I loved telling stories. So, I stood up tall and told the class all about catching Mr. Ribbits the frog and keeping him as a pet over the summer. Some of the other kids shared about their vacations too, while others talked about their favorite toys or sports they liked to play.By the end of the day, I had already made a few new friends, and I couldn't wait to come back to school the next day. Secondgrade was going to be amazing – I could just feel it! I hopped back on the bus, chatting excitedly with Tommy about all the fun things we would get to do and learn this year.When I got home, Mom asked me how my first day went. With a huge smile on my face, I told her, "It was the best day ever!I already love second grade." And I really meant it.
