When I started a novel when I was younger, I wanted to finish it the next day. When I started a business, I wanted to sell it a day later. When I started graduate school, I was already planning how I was going to be the fastest PhD in history. Around the time that I had planned on receiving that PhD, I ended up getting thrown out. “Lack of maturity(成熟),” the letter said.

I don’t believe that “Life is short”. Sometimes it feels very long. I wish every day was already over just so I could get to the next. And the next. An imaginary tomorrow always seems to be better than today in my head. This makes me think of my hero, Gene Wolfe.

Gene Wolfe was given the task of taking a baked potato, pressing it down, and slicing(切片) it up so that it could fit into a tennis ball can. Well, he did it. He invented Pringles(品客薯片).

Many normal human beings, not as obsessed(入迷的) with status and creativity as Gene was, might say, “OK, that’s my life’s achievement. I’ve created an easily storable food based on a vegetable that will please children and adults for decades, maybe centuries.”

If I were Gene I would have rested on my laurels(满足既得的成就) and played golf with friends. But Gene knew the magic secret: One page a day. He writes a page a day. A page is about 300 words. A paragraph or two. Can you do that? Gene ended up writing 50 published novels, including many bestsellers and awardwinners. He didn’t get stereotyped(一成不变的) and put in that Pringles can. He did what he loved to do. That’s what keeps you alive every day.

Life is too long to reject the opportunities in front of you every day.

I was talking to James Manos, the creator of Dexter(嗜血法医). He said, “My definition of success is not being able to tell difference between work and pleasure.” It’s OK if right now the two are separate for you. Today is a new day. We say what we want to change. We regret what we never changed.

This is my page today.

Having already changed the way we communicate with its smartphones, Apple Inc released its next big thing on March 9 in San Francisco, US. The Apple Watch, according to CNN, is “a simple rectangular shape with a range of stylish and useful wristbands.” “The style is classic in those respects it’s up there with the top quality Swiss watches,” commented the news outlet.

The watch will be available in nine places, including the US, the UK and China, from April 24. The starting price is $349 (2,186 yuan). With six different designs and 30 or so wristbands, the gadget “sets the standard for smartwatches, in style,” agreed The Brisbane Times,“but more importantly, in functionality (功能性).” “With the built-in speaker and microphone, you can receive calls on your watch. I have been wanting to do this since I was 5 years old,” said Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook. In fact, anything you can do on the iPhone is there on the watch –e-mails, text messages, airline boarding services, and directions from Apple Maps. Using a home security app, you can keep an eye on your home from afar, or even open a locked door. There are some features that have made Cook sure the watch is “our most personal device yet; a new chapter in the way we relate to technology ”. According to NPR, the watch taps you on the wrist to draw your attention to a message or a calendar reminder, and it can send a tap on the wrist to another Apple Watch wearer.

However, the watch can also do things that are just plain fun. You can send a real-time display of your heartbeat to another Apple Watch to “let someone know you are think ing about them.”Patrick Moorhead, a leading technology analyst in the US, described the tech company as “a master in the art of persuasion”. “The secret weapon is the ability to message each other by tapping on the watch,” he told The Associated Press. “I think people, particularly kids, are going to go nuts (疯狂) over that.” So far, though, the most impressive part of this new device is “the monitoring of the wearer’s health and fitness,” said AFP. It will even tap you on the wrist if you have been sitting down for longer than is good for your health.

4. Which of the following features of the Apple Watch aren’t mentioned in the article?

A. its price

B. its functions

C. its weight

D. when and where people can buy it

5. With an Apple Watch, you can ______.

A. monitor your health and diagnose yourself

B. send a real-time display of your heartbeat to an iPhone

C. be reminded to move around if you’ve been sitting down for too long

D. receive emails, text messages and calls, and open a locked door for your neighbor

6. How does the Apple Watch let wearers know there is a new message?

A. The watch beeps.

B. The watch sends out music.

C. The watch changes its screen color.

D. The watch taps the wearer on the wrist.

7. Which of the f ollowing words best describes Tim Cook’s attitude toward the Apple Watch?

A. Proud.

B. Modest.

C. Serious.

D. Cautious.

Disease, poverty, hate, love-Charles Dickens’ stories opened his readers eyes to the most important themes of his age. Two hundred years later, his stories still speak volumes across the world, proving that Dickens’ legacy(遗产) was far greater than just “gr eat-literature”.

February 7 marks the 200th anniversary of the writer’s birthday. To mark this date, BBC writer Alex Hudson listed six things Dickens gave the modern world. Let’s take a look at two of them.

A White Christmas

Dickens is described as “the man who invented Christmas”- not the religious festival, but the cultural aspects that we associate with the festive season today.

In the early 19th century, Christmas was barely worth mentioning, according to critic and writer Leigh Hunt. The committee which ran the Conservative Party even held ordinary business meetings on Christmas Day-unthinkable in the West nowadays, when everyone but the most necessary workers takes at least three days off.

Many people believe that Dickens’ popular descriptions of the festive period became a blueprint for generations to come. In his classic novel, A Christmas Carol, he not only put forward the idea of snow at Christmas, but also painted a picture of glowing warmth-“home enjoyments, affections and hopes”.

In his bi ography of Dickens, Peter Ackroyd wrote: “Dickens can be said to have almost single-handedly created the modern idea of Christmas.”

“Dickens ian” poverty

Dickens was one of the first to take an honest look at the underclass and the poor of Victorian London.

He helped popularize the term“red tape” to describe situations where people in power use needless amounts of bureaucracy(官僚作风) in a way that particularly hurts the weaker and poorer members of society.

“Dickensian” has now become a powerful word for describing an unacceptable level of poverty. In 2009, when the president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in the UK wanted to talk about poverty in some areas of Britain, she did not use words like “terrible” or “horrific”, but rather described it as “life mirroring the times of Dickens”.

8. The article is mainly about ____________ .

A. a brief introduction to Charles Dickens’

B. Charles Dickens’ impact on the world

C. the characters in Charles Dickens’ stories

D. Charles Dickens’ achievements in literature

9. Why is Dickens’ called “the man who invented Christmas”?

A. Because he created both religious and cultural festival.

B. Because his novels have something to do with Christmas.

C. Because one of his novels helped to shape Christmas celebrations.

D. Because he was the first man to have proposed celebrating Christmas.

10. We can learn from the passage that ______________.

A. Charles Dickens’ novels reflect the true life at his age

B. Dickensian is widely used to describe the Christmas

C. every person can take three days off for Christmas

D. The theme of Charles Dickens’ stories is about poverty

11. According to the passage the underlined phrase “red tape” refers to ____________.

A. rules or regulations that are required to finish a task

B. a situation where poor members of society are hurt

C. conflict between people in power and weaker people

D. pointlessly time-consuming official procedure

Small Talk

In most English-speaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make “small talk”in certain situations. Small talk is a casual form of conversation that “break the ice”or fills an awkward silence between people. 16 Just as there are certain times when small talk is appropriate, there are also certain topics that people often discuss during these moments.

Who makes small talk?

People with many different relationships use small talk. 17 Though we often teach children not to talk to strangers, adults are expected to say at least a few words in certain situations. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances, often called a “friend of a friend”, to use small talk. Other people who have short casual conversations are office employees who may not be good friends but work in the same department.

18

There are certain “safe”topics that people usually make small talk about. The weather is probably the number one that people who do not know each other well discuss. 19

Another topic that is generally safe is current events, It is usually safe to discuss the news. Sports news is a very common topic, especially if a local team or player is doing extremely well or badly. Entertainment news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other speaker have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about.

20 Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is not done between people who do not know each other well. Negative comments about another person not

involved in the conversation are also not acceptable because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets. Also, it is not safe to discuss subjects like religion or politics. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in.

A.The most common type of people to use small talk are those who do not know each other.

B.Where do people make small talk?

C.There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk.

D.What do people make small talk about?

E.Even though you may feel shy, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing.

F.Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet.

【参考范文】

As everyone knows, growing up happily and healthily is very important for kids. In order to reach the goal, we must do several things.

Firstly, we should develop a good attitude to life. Life consists of not only sunshine but also hard times. When we are in trouble, we should face it bravely with a big smile. Secondly, we are students, so studying hard is our duty, because knowledge is the key to success. If we get the “key”, we will achieve much success in the near future.

Finally, in my point of view, it is important to do some sports. It can help us relax after a day’s hard work, and it also helps keep fit.

If we do these things, I believe we can grow up happily and healthily.
