The real reason you should never skip breakfast

We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and now new research has confirmed what we (26) _________ ( tell ) for years: skipping that morning meal is a very bad idea.

New guidance released by the American Heart Association and(27) _________ ( support ) by British experts from the British Heart Foundation warns that skipping breakfast could raise your risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, the Daily Mail reports. After reviewing numerous studies, the team concluded that (29) _________ who ate regular, healthy breakfast every day were (30) _________ ( likely ) to overeat later on. Counting the Cost of China’s Left -Behind Children

As a growing number of village couples head to the cities in search of work, a generation of left-behind children is emerging in China. The number of these left-behind children living with their grandparents or great-grandparents is _____36_____ estimated at 60 million nationwide. These children often face ______37______ and emotional problems as well as challenges to their personal safety and ____38_____.

In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of left-behind children suffering from death by drowning, poisoning, traffic accidents or fire incidents. Pan Lu, a researcher with

the

College of Humanities and Development Studies at China Agricultural University, points out that as their parents rush into cities for economic opportunities, they must rely on their children to take on some of the ____39______ of farming. Nevertheless, doing farm work at an early age makes children vulnerable to injury. Besides, the rights of these left-behind children are likely to be infringed upon(侵害). It is not ____40____ that they are beaten, threatened or even sexually assaulted.

Education is yet another _____41_____. When the children are old enough, their parents will often put them in packed boarding houses ____42______ to the public schools in order to finish their nine-year public education. However, because of the poor conditions of those houses, many left-behind children ____43______ to keep up. Some even end up ____44_____ school altogether. A survey conducted by the Population Development Center at China’s Renmin University, showed that only 88 percent of 14 year old left-behind children are still in school. Left-behind children are slowly becoming “lagging-behind” children.

In the ____45_____ for economic opportunity and growth, these left-behind children are becoming victims. This is a social problem for which we must find a solution. An All-China Women’s Federation report suggests that the government should create a dynamic information system for the left-behind children and at the same time with the help of schools, families and communities set up a protection network the children can turn to.

One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word “Poems” appeared in big, hot pink letters.

“Is it good?” I asked her.

“Yeah,” she answered. “There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too.” I leaned forward. ‘Patty Poem,’” she read the title. Who is Patty? I wondered. The poem began: She never puts her toys away, Just leaves them scattered where they lay, The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly: When she grows and gathers poise, I’ll miss her harum-scarum noise, And look in vain for scattered toys. And I’ll be sad.

A terrible sorrow washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.

“It’s you, honey,” My mother said sadly.

To my mother, the poem revealed a parent’s affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the “she” in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.

“What’s wrong?” my mot her asked.

“Oh Mama,” I cried. “I don’t want to grow up ever!”

She smiled. “Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay?”

“Okay,” I was still weeping. My panic has gone. But I could not help thinking abo ut that silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could plainly

understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.

I have since fallen in love with other poems, but “Patty Poem” remains my poem. After all, “Patty Poem” gave me my love for poetry not because it was the p oem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

61.Why was the writer attracted by the book Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again?

A. It was a thick enough book.

B. Something on its cover caught her eye.

C. Her mother was reading it with interest.

D. It has a meaningful title.

62.After her mother read the poem to her, the writer felt ______ at first.

A. sad

B. excited

C. horrified

D. confused

63.The writer’s mother liked to read “Patty Poem” probably because______.

A.it reflected her own childhood

B.it was written in simple language

C.it was composed by a famous poet

D.it gave her a hint of what would happen

64.It can be concluded from the passage that “Patty Poem” leads the writer to _______.

A. discover the power of poetry

B. recognize her love for puzzles

As I was thinking about language learning the other day, the image of baking bread came into my mind. I compared some of the exercises and drills that we put ourselves through in order to learn a language to the various ingredients that go into baking a loaf of fresh bread.

Real language learning takes place in human relationships. No one sits down and eats a cup of flour, even if he is hungry and in a hurry. You don’t become bilingual(双语的)by learning lists of vocabulary. You don’t become a speaker of a language by memorizing verb conjugations(动词的词形变化)and agreement rules. You become bilingual by entering a community that uses that other language as its primary means of communication.

I am not suggesting that we can make bread without ingredients. Flour is necessary, as are yeast, salt, water and other ingredients. Vocabulary is part of any language and will have to be learned. Grammatical rules exist in every language and cannot be ignored. But merely combining the appropriate ingredients in the recommended proportions does not result in bread. At best, you only end up with a ball of dough.

In order to get bread, you have to apply heat to the dough. And in language learning, that heat comes from the community. Anyone who has learned a second language has experienced that heat. It creeps up your neck when you ask the babysitter, “Have you already been eaten?” when you meant to say, “Have you already eaten?” When you try to say something quite

innocent and the whole room bursts into laughter, you are experiencing the heat that turns raw dough into good bread.

Remember the old saying, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”? This is where language learning often breaks down because we find the heat uncomfortable and we stop the baking process. In other words, we can’t stand the heat, so we get out of the kitchen.

However, the language learner who stays in the kitchen—in the heat—until the combined ingredients are thoroughly transformed will enjoy the richness of a quality loaf of bread. He said that he did not “get out of the kitchen” at the critical moment when the oven seemed too hot. The dedicated language learner knows that becoming bilingual cannot be achieved without the heat!

68. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. how we can make baking bread with various ingredients

B. how to become bilingual by communicating with others

C. what an important role “heat” plays in learning a language

D. what a high quality of bread you may achieve in the kitchen

69. You can become a speaker of a language by _______.

A. bearing millions of words and expressions in your mind

B. using the language to communicate with those around you

C. knowing verb conjugations and grammatical rules

D. saying something innocent to be laughed at by others

70. What’s the purpose of illustration of the example —you ask the babysitter, “Have you already been eaten?” when you meant to say, “Have you already eaten?”?

A. To prove that you are sure to make some mistakes when you enter a community.

B. To show that you should combine the ingredients in the recommended proportions.

C. To prove that you may experience “heat” from the community in language learning.

D. To indicate that being bilingual calls for your courage, confidence and perseverance.

71. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the necessity of baking bread and learning language?

A. Wonderful skills.

B. Various ingredients.

C. Appropriate proportions.

D. Uncomfortable heat.

Section C ( 8分)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

In so many ways, cyberspace(网络空间) mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.

Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a

computer screen. Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. ____72____ So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

Usually, this "faceless" communication doesn't create problems. Identity doesn't really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the idea themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people come together to chat about their interests?

____73____ They are looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.

Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first. Personal appearance doesn't get in the way.

But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them. Internet users can carefully craft their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don't have to worry about what their “faceless”communication is doing for their image. ____74____

All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. ____75____ This inevitably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different from the real person.

So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: "Life in the real world is far richer than anything you'll find on a computer screen."

VII. Summary writing: ( 10分)

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. However, women, on average, live longer. In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.

One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions. Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility (生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and the blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.

The female hormones also protect the body in another way. They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men.

Women are also helped by their female genes. Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency (倾向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities.

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Well, I own a small data processing company, in which I employ about eight to ten workers. And the point I want to make has to do with trust. I know it’s possible to force people to be 100% efficient. But I think when you do that, you lose confidence and trust. I let my employees use our equipment and make personal phone calls. They are more than welcome to decide what is right and wrong. Because I think you can’t run a company by just giving orders to robots and watching them like big brother, right? I think you have to trust people and give them a little freedom. And also, as far as phone calls and all that go, I want my people to call home and check on their children and know their children are safe and sound. As a result, I have devoted employees who are willing to go that extra mile and I can honestly say they show up to work smiling. So I get more satisfaction and rewards by trusting my employees than by suspecting them of doing something wrong.

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

Today, I will make a speech on zoos. Many people think zoos are cruel, and have no place in the modern world. It is my own opinion that zoos, although not perfect, do have a useful function.

Firstly, zoos are places of education. Zoos can help children to appreciate nature. Furthermore, research into animal behavior is done in zoos, and has increased our knowledge of zoology, genetics and even psychology. Above all, zoos can protect the future of many species of animal. Many species today are in danger of extinction, and thanks to zoos, they have a chance of survival.

Opponents of zoos say that they are cruel. First of all, they argue, zoos can not recreate the environment in which animals live and because of this, animals are bored and depressed. Secondly, animals have frequent contact with human visitors. Which can be stressful?

However, in my opinion, most zoos have improved recently. It is now quite rare to see animals in cages, and most zoos try hard to recreate the environment in which different animals live.

In conclusion, although zoos are not perfect environment for animals, I believe that they have more advantages than disadvantages. In an ideal world, zoos would not be necessary. But as long as man hunts animals for profit and destroy their environments, zoos are essential.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Many of us watched the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland on Saturday night. I know I did. I’m here to interview Joan Jett, who was honored that night.

Welcome, Joan, and congratulations on your honor.

W: Thank you!

M: So your biggest hit was “I love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in 1982. What do you like about rock and roll? W: It’s a feeling, an emotion. You don’t think about it. If you start thinking about rock ‘n’ roll, you won’t get it. That’s when it gets boring.

M: You are also known for making it okay to be a female rocker. You definitely broke some ground there. You were accepted by even the craziest male rock stars.

W: Yeah, I was just being me. I wore black leather and jeans. I had long, blond hair. And I named my band the Blackhearts.

M: Three of your album hits the Top 20 —“I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”, “Album”, and “Up Your Alley”. But you also covered other artists’ songs, right?

W: Yeah, Gary Glitter, Tommy James, Sly and the Family Stone… They couldn’t figure out what we were doing, but they liked.

M: Your attitude and choices were a major influence on other female rockers.

W: I’m not done yet. Stay tuned. I can still get on stage, play the guitar, and sing!
