How do you get a man to do his share of the housework? If you are like most women, you’ve faced this question the hard way.

A man will enjoy a clean, orderly house, but he usually won’t make the effort to clean or organize it. This doesn’t mean that a woman has to do all the housework; she may have to manage many of the household duties, and request her partner’s participation(参与). A woman can often say that men and women should take equal responsibility for housework.

Very few men are raised to be fully responsible for housework, and many men look on housework as women’s work. On the other hand, most men will readily work around the yard, make repairs and complete projects on weekends or evenings, and it’s important that you give your man appreciation for those things, too. Most men will take on a little extra housework around the house if asked politely. They are even more likely to do housework if they can choose what they want to do, and do it without being monitored (监督).

Here’s the key: men want to feel that they are doing housework either because they want to do a task, or because they simply want to please their women. Men are much less likely to take on household tasks they consider uninteresting and unimportant. In a word, men are likely to do a household task just for the good of the house.

21. The passage is mainly about ______________.

B. how to get men to serve their families

C. how to praise men’s housework

D. how to make men do all the housework

22. According to the passage, a man ______________.

A. is willing to do any housework

B. likes to be told to do housework

C. is taught to be responsible for housework from childhood

D. likes a clean house but doesn’t make efforts to clean it

23. In order to get men to do some housework, women should often_____.

A. order them to do their share

B. ask them to do some housework politely

C. blame men’s laziness

D. monitor men’s work

24. According to the passage, which of the following would a husband most probably like to do?

A. Wash the dishes.

B. Do some sewing.

C. Paint the roof.

D. Ask his wife to work on the yard.

B

WHAT can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later.

Th e idea that popularity could have a serious influence on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.

“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to go along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun,17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friend s always help each other.” They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you are occasionally in low spirits,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.

Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendaholism(交友狂症)? A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve (储备)of social contacts.

But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of money?

“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the meaning of a friend,” said Meghan Daum, who works with the Los Angele s Times in the US.

Daum dislikes the idea that quantity trumps quality in the age of Friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally or someone who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don’t actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease(润滑)the wheels of life, she also warned, “Too bad one thing money can’t buy is a real friend.”

25.What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun?

B. They teach you how to make more money.

C. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer up.

D. They introduce their friends to you.

26.What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers?

A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune.

B. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.

C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune.

D. Social skills, talent, hard work and Facebook.

27.We learn that Meghan Daum’s attitude towards friends is somewhat ________.

A. up-to-date

B. optimistic

C. puzzled

D. traditional

28.What does th e word “trumps” in the last paragraph mean?

A. Be better than.

B. Be equal to.

C. Be worse than.

D. Be similar to.

C

I was talking with a client(客户)who was completely burned out on her work and life and then ready for a job change. She said, “I just wish I had meaningful work. I don’t feel like I’m making a difference. I’m just wasting my life.” These are the words I he ar most often from clients. All of us want to feel like we are making a difference and our work means something. The problem comes in defining (定义)“meaningful work”. What is it? For some people meaningful work might be helping others organize their office. For others it may mean making a million dollars.

What really matters is how you see it. What is meaningful work to you? Take out a piece of paper and answer these questions. How do you define meaningful work? When do you feel like you are really making a difference? What work have you done so far that feels the most meaningful? Write down whatever comes to your mind.

It is very easy to start judging yourself as being selfish. Stop! Allow yourself to be honest. The fact is when Picasso painted, he was doing it because he liked to paint. He was not thinking, “Oh, I hope this brings joy to others’ lives.” He painted because he wanted to. When Beethoven composed, he did it because he loved music. Even scientists searching for a cure for cancer are completely involved in their work just because it fascinates them.

It is easy to downplay the importance of work that feels meaningful. I remember Tony Robbins told a story of talking with the owner of a major company. The man said to Tony, “I wish I could do what you do because it makes such a difference in people’s lives.” Tony said, “You’ve got to be kidding! Look at what a difference you make. You provide work, health insurance and security for thousands of people! Don’t underestimate(低估)the value you provide.”

Take a look at what you have written about meaningful work. How do you wish to contribute to this world? Whatever you choose, remember that the greatest gift you can give is to find work that makes you feel fulfilled and joyful. Honor your preferences because giving your gifts to the world, whatever they look like, is the most meaningful action you can ever take.

29. What does the writer mean by mentioning Picasso and Beethoven?

A. Famous people are selfish to just work for themselves.

B. Doing meaningful work requires our interest in it.

C. Interest is the best teacher in learning.

30. According to the passage, what meaningful job does the writer advise us to take?

A. The one that is popular in society.

B. The one that brings you profits.

C. The one that wins you fame.

D. The one that brings you great joy.

31. The author would probably agree that_____________.

A. a career change is necessary for getting meaningful work

B. meaningful work is defined differently by different people

C. we must show confidence and talent in meaningful work

D. making a difference to society needs great contributions

D

Drama(戏剧)and the performing arts are excellent methods of building confidence in both children and adults. Learning through drama allows children to explore their creativity (创造力)and have fun while leaving their shyness and worries behind. Drama also works by supporting the growth of imagination and other skills.

Entertainment(娱乐)has become rather passive(被动的)with cinema, television, and video games. These screen-based methods have had a negative effect on communication. However, drama puts the “get-up-and-go” back into entertainment. Children have the opportunity to connect with others in a more meaningful way as drama encourages speech development and awareness of body language, and allows the children to become more socially active.

Play and drama are closely connected. When children play a game, they are pretending and using their imagination and so they are moving away from reality to create their own story. Drama is a vehicle through which children can express themselves more freely through movement and speech to make education fun.

Children gain confidence by understanding that there is no final answer in drama and that their opinion and contribution are valued. Children are able to give a personal response (回应)to many problems and situations such as poverty, global warming and recycling. The problems that drama can deal with are endless. Drama and education have a strong connection as drama can encourage children to take an active interest in other subjects such as geography, history, and English and so they can have a more rounded education.

As a drama teacher, I have seen children at their first class holding onto their parents’ arms—unwilling to let go. Then to see the same child later running into my class with smiles is an excellent sight. Drama gives children confidence by allowing them to try and experiment. Everyone is given the opportunity to shine within drama. Besides learning the history of the theatre, drama covers dance, music, and directing, etc. These classes are especially designed to be of great fun.

32.Performing drama is likely to help children _________.

A. invent something useful

B. imagine anything they like

C. become more confident in themselves

D. develop an interest in doing experiments

33.Which of the following is useful in developing a child’s communication skills?

A. Drama and play .

B. Television and cinema

C. Video games and drama

D. Cinema and video games

34. What does the underlined phrase “get-up-and-go” in the second paragraph probably mean?

A. Great influence on children.

B. Enthusiasm (热情)for communication.

C. Need for communication.

D. Negative effects on children.

35. We can know from the fourth paragraph that _________.

A. children’s opinions is of little importance

B. drama has a weak connection with education

C. children can learn drama by themselves in their daily lives

D. drama can help children learn about other subjects.
