Is teaching important? Well , of course it is. There was a time when the necessary knowledge
could be taught to the young by family members. But as societies became more complex and division of labor more common, it was impossible useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teaching came into being in our country, and teaching as a job has been of increasing importance over the past one hundred years. Ever since I was a small girl, my family has been interested in the origins of our unusual surname. But in those days it was difficult to look into your family history, whereas these days there is much easier access to information. I got started on my project a few years ago, when I was given my late father's birth certificate, which showed his parents' names. I was delighted because before that I hadn't known anything about my grandparents. Since then I've never looked back.
First of all, I looked up a lot of information in the 1881 census for England and Wales. Censuses of the whole population have been taken every ten years since 1841, and provide invaluable information. I consult them quite frequently. Each one is kept confidential for 100 years, so recently there was great excitement about the release of the 1901 census. For the first time, this one was made available online, making it even more accessible. However, there were so many users that it kept on crashing, so they had to take it off again for 18 months while they were fixing it. Finally it was put back, and it's very useful.
Perhaps once a month or so I go to the national records office in London，and while I'm there I consult not only the censuses but also the civil registers of births, marriages and deaths (which were first introduced in1837). I also call in at the county records offices in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire fairly often. Whenever I go there, I search the registers for records of baptisms, weddings and funerals, which have been kept by every church since the sixteenth century. The records offices hold other important documents too, such as wills, marriage licences and workhouse details. These all contain invaluable evidence about our country's history. At the same time, during these trips, I can visit the places, towns and villages where my ancestors lived, and so can really start to imagine the lives they led.
Family history isn't only about the past though. I've discovered a whole new family alive today that I was previously unaware of. These are my father's cousins, who emigrated to America, and their children and grandchildren. Not long ago I travelled to the USA to meet these newly-found relatives. We got on really well and now we're very good friends and often speak to each other on the phone. I'm planning to go back as soon as possible.
Genealogy is a fascinating hobby with many attractions: it provides me with intellectual stimulation, a new interest in social history and a sense of my family roots. It has also given me opportunities to travel around this country and abroad and to get to know new relatives. It can be very time-consuming, but also very rewarding.
