My best friend Jane once asked me to cut her hair. She

made it too short. What’s worse, she had to take a photo for

her driver’s license the next week. Although I apologized, Jane

never asked me for a haircut again. She has learned her lesson.

My family have not.

As far as I know, my husband has never visited a barber. When he first asked me to cut his hair, I showed him Jane’s photo. But he didn’t mind. Luckily, my task is simple, just like mowing the lawn I have done that more than a hundred times since then.

For my son, it has never been that easy. When he was about nine months old, I decided to cut his hair for the first time. As soon as I raised my scissors, he shouted loudly. So I gave up. One night the next year, I tried to cut his hair during his sleep, he woke up suddenly. I failed again. When he was two, I told him, “We’ll give some of your hair to the birds, so they can make soft, warm nests (巢) for their babies.” He thought fo r a moment, and agreed. As we finished, his hair looked a bit jagged (参差不齐的), but it was short enough —a success.

As my son grew older, I continued to serve as a family barber. My skills

improved. Now he’s 14, and I wonder how long I can continue with my j ob.

What do you do when you have an hour of free time? In modern society, most people seem to forget the importance of self-growth and learning. This is why the one-hour-a-day challenge comes into play.

The one-hour-a-day challenge was created by Benjamin Franklin. He used to set aside one hour every day to do something different and meaningful that allowed him to learn and grow as a person while having “me-time”. “Me-time” is something that most of us just don’t have anymore. Instead, we rush around every day, trying to complete everything on our schedule (日程表). Benjamin Franklin, however, would wake up each day and ask himself, “What good will I do today?” Similarly, he would end each day by asking, “What good have I done today?”

The purpose of this challenge is simple: you set goals for yourself and you achieve them with the time that you set aside for yourself daily. The point is to learn and continue to grow as a person instead of letting your life take control.

I view it as a reminder not to let life pass me by. Think about it: we do what we have to do, but we don’t always do what we wa nt to do. C. To show us how to make full use of time.

( )60. In which column of a newspaper can we probably find the reading?

A. GREAT PEOPLE

B. CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL

This trend, which was started by the medical community(医学界)61 a method of fighting heart disease, has had some unintended side 62(effect) such as overweight and heart disease—the very thing the medical community was trying to fight. Fat and salt are very important parts of a diet. They are required 63(process) the food that we eat, to recover from injury and for several other bodily functions. When fat and salt 64 (remove) from food, the food tastes as if it is missing something. As 65 result, people will eat more food to try to make up for that something missing. Even 66 (bad), the amount of fast food that people eat goes up. Fast food 67(be) full of fat and salt; by 68 (eat) more fast food people will get more salt and fat than they need in their diet.
