Fashion always keeps at least one eye on the future. Now scientists are lending a hand, developing tomorrow’s super-powered (超能)clothing such as coats that can rech arge(再充电)your MP3 player and make you stronger.

For example, electronics could get recharged in the future simply by plugging(插上插座)them into your outer wear, because Australian researchers are designing clothing that can collect energy from a person. The coats would include small things that change vibration energy(动能)from a person’s movements i nto electricity. High-tech fabrics(纤维品)would carry this energy to batteries(电池).

“It will look like an ordinary(common)coat but have super energy,” said Adam Best, an Australian head research scientist. “This kind of technology h as important uses for sold i ers in the field and could mean they no longer need to carry heavy batteries,’’ Best added. “Above all, they’d be wearing the battery, not carrying it.” Besides helping soldiers, these coats could also have common uses for common people, such as powering rad ios, mob ile phones, MP3 players or medical things. Solar-powered handbags could do the same thing.

Thanks to self-cleaning fabrics developed by scientists working for the U. S. Air Force, underwear and sports clothing could go weeks without washing. The general idea of clothes tha t never get dirty can be found in the 1951 film The Man in the White Suit. The new technology helps keep off water, oil and bacteria(细菌).

High-tech fabrics could also help serve as protection. For example, future fabrics could lead to sof t helmets(头盔)that turn hard in an accident.

Not all the possible fabrics of tomorrow are necess arily high-tech. For example, chicken feathers(羽毛)and other things of the farming ind ustry could get changed into wool-like fabrics or cotton-like ones, helping use fewer fabrics made from oil.

Scientific development is also creating wool that doesn’t become bigger or smaller after washing. And future clothing could

help soldiers shoulder heavy bags and help people walk. But not all electronic coats have such uses—some m ight serve as video game players with high technology and the latest fashion joined together perfectly.

The world of fash ion is set to be taken by high-tech clothing that works as you wear!

I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway 33 we realized we were hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $ 20 b ill. I was so 34 because I had never h ad that kind of cash before. But spending it on food seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. 35 I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I 36 I had not handed any money to the cashier(收银员). I have learned two things from this 42 . Maybe I was a fool giving in to my cons cience, and being too stupid to have a free pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will 43 you.

This goes with the saying, “A coward(懦夫)dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible 44 tha t at least a thousand times. If I h ad been a “hero” and gone b ack to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.

这是很难在第一,然后就变得更容易。有一天我决定了它75。那天晚上,有我的电话,问我是否愿意为200医院的工人一天的训练。我说是的,找到工作。

When the Beij ing Olympics begin this August, the world will be watch ing. The Games have become a huge international event. People will come from around the world to watch many athletes from many countries compete to take home the gold. It takes years of work and billions of dollars to prepare for the Olympics. But it hasn’t always been that way.

The ancient Olympics

The first recorded Olympics, in 776 B. C., were an important religious festival. But they only included athletes from about a dozen cities. Even after 200 years, the ancient Games only included Greek men from about 100 cities around Med iterranean. Unlike today, the ancient Games were always at Olympia, in Greece.

Olympic sports have also changed a lot in the last few thousand years. The ancient Games began with just one 192-metre race. In later years, the Games grew to include a total of six sports to test skilled soldiers. These included races where runners wore fighting equipment and the pankration—a violent sport with few rules.

The modern Games

Even the modern Olympics were once far smaller than they are today. The first of the modern Games, in 1896, once had 241 athletes from 14 countries. Moreover, the early modern Olympics were not an independent event. Until 1908 the Olympics were part of the world’s fair!

At the first modem Olympics, there were 43 events from ten sports. Many of the sports from the early modern Games are no longer part of the Olympics. These include the sports of golf and tug of war. There has always been a lot of disagreement over changing Olympic sports.

The number of Olympic sports has constantly increased throughout history. At the Beijing Games, athletes will compete in 302 events from 28 sports. Despite all the changes over the years, some ancient sports are still part of the modern Games. These include running, boxing and wrestling.

The Olympics continue to grow and change, and they encourage us all to work harder, go faster and be stronger.

A new rule for the quick settlement of minor traffic accidents has worked amazingly well in improving traffic in Beijing. Traffic jams have become less since the new rule was started on July, 1.The jam caused by accidents dropped nearly 60 percent from last year.

One of the city’s b iggest headaches, traffic overcrowd ing is talked about daily. The local government has done many things trying to solve the problem, including build ing new roads and crossovers, send ing out more policemen and employing ass istants to keep the order on the road. But these actions did not result in success.

The new rule for minor traffic accident settlement allows car owners to reach an agreement about the responsib ility and payment in these accidents, instead of waiting for the police to support their agreements. The agreements are acceptable by the ins urance companies.

Compared with constructing new roads, this new rule is only a ch ange in traffic accident settlement procedures that does not

cost taxpayers any money, but it has greatly lessened traffic jams.

This change actually allows all car owners to have the right to deal with the accident as long as there is no serious harm, damage or losses. In this way, the public has now become an active part in traffic management. The management becomes much better and the traffic is improved.

This is an enlightening example. The improvement of traffic depends not only on build ing new roads, but also on the method, system and detailed deals in the traffic management.

52.Wh at does the und erlined word “headaches” prob ably mean?

A.New roads. B.Traffic lights. C.Accidents. D.Problems.

A.Car owners can find the answer to traffic problems. B.You must call the police when the accident happens.

C.It took a long time to work out a small traffic accident. D.The new rule for the quick settlement is difficult to follow. 55.Wh ich of the following might be the best title of the article?

A.Traffic Accidents in Beij ing B.New Rules Have Worked

C.Public Rules Prevent Accidents D.New Roads Improved Traffic

I am an eighth-grade student at Central Middle School. In my three years at the school, I have played soccer, basketball, and baseball. I love sports and really enjoy being part of a team. Playing on our school sports teams has been the best part of middle school for me. I know I’m lucky that I’ve had this opportunity.

Some kids have not been so lucky. In fact, many kids who love sports don’t hav e the chance to play on a school team. That’s because, to make a team, you h ave to try out. The idea is that kids who are good at sports will do well in tryouts and m ake the team. But what about the kids who don’t do well during tryouts? Maybe they are ill that day, or nervous, or are just having a bad day, so they don’t play their best. They don’t make the team, and that is too bad.

Also, there are kids who really don’t have the skills to play well. They never make a team, and that isn’t fair either. How w ill kids ever learn the skills if they don’t have a chance to play? Remember, this is the school and students are here to learn. All kids should have the chance to learn sports skills and teamwork by playing on a s chool sports team.

There are other reasons why every student should have the chance to play sports. Sports are important for good health and fitness. They help kids feel good about themselves and their school. They build friendships among teammates. Coaches are good role models, and students who play team sports learn good sportsmanship. And, most important, team sports are fun! Players have fun playing, and their parents have fun watching and cheering for the team. So, sports bring kids and parents together, too.

By now you know how I feel. Every kid who wants to play on a sch ool sports team should have the chance. These teams are for fun and fitness—they’re not profess ional teams! Let’s ch ange the rules for making a team. Let’s get rid of tryouts. Let’s give every student at Central Middle School the chance to wear a team uniform.

Ever s ince we became pen pals, Julien has sent me strange things. Once, she sent her sneeze in a jar.(“I have a cold, can you tell?” she wrote.)Then she sent her fingerprint.(“So you’ll recognize me in a crowd.”)

It’s hard to believe how times have changed since the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, on 6th April 1896. Over one hundred years ago, there was very little reliance(dependence)on modern technology. There were no land ing mats(海

绵垫), no stopwatches and no photo finishes. In fact, cameras and stopwatches were not used until the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the USA.

Today technology has completely revolutionized(ch anged)sports. Take sports equipment(装备)for example. Starting blocks are now equipped with electronic pressure sensors(传感器), wh ich provide exactly correct race time and also help to catch runners who “jump the gun”. As athletes cross the finishing line, special d igital cameras can also eas ily decide the winner. The clays of “dead heats” are gone.

Athletes have also benefited(受益)from technological developments. Body-hug-ging suits, which reduce(减少)wind drag, can help cut up to one-tenth of a second from runners’ race times. Top athletes are even provided with tailor-made sports shoes. These shoes are made to fit the athlete exactly—and there are even air compartments in the shoes tha t can be filled to meet each runner’s ind ividual needs.

Technology has also changed the way that many sports are performed. Take one exa mple—the pole vault(撑杆跳). The inclus ion of a land ing mat obviously made a big d ifference to the vaulting style(方式)as athletes no longer needed to worry about hurting themselves as they fell. Without these worries, athletes could ob viously jump h igher. These days, polevaulters do not even need to worry about the crossbar as the uprights are now fitted with light-emitting diodes(LEDs)that measure(测量)how high the athlete vaulted. Technology has even been to the advantage of s wimmers.New pools have been des ig ned to reduce wave interference and sports scientists have even developed a new style of s wimming that increases buoyancy and reduces drag in the water.

The increas ing importance of these technological developments has led many sportsmen to suggest that th e “Olympic spirit” is being lost in a rush to break records and win medals. Many developing countries say that technology has become too important in sport and that athletes from developing countries that cannot afford such technology are d isad vantaged. There are no easy answers but one thing is sure—we cannot turn back time. Technology cannot go backwards.

53.The underlined phrase “dead heats” means “________”.
