Now who can give us a short introduction to it?Sa: It was painted by an Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci in the years 1503 ~ 1506. This painting is famous for the mysterious smile on the subject’s face and now the Mona Lisa is famous throughout the world.T: Good. And do you know in Italian history, which period the year 1503 belonged to?Ss: The Renaissance.T: You were asked to find information about the Renaissance last period. Now who’d like to say something about it?S: The term Renaissance is derived from the French word for rebirth, and originally referred to the revival of the values and artistic styles of classical antiquity during that period, especially in Italy. S: It describes the period of European history from the early 14th to the late 16th century.T: OK, very good! Now we have known some basic information about the Renaissance. Let’s learn something more about other periods and styles related to them. Who can tell me who the most famous knight you have ever known in history is?Ss: Robin Hood.T: And we all know that knights belong to a typical period in European history, do you know this period?S: The Middle Ages, a period from about 1100 to 1500.T: Yes. And do you know another term which has the same meaning?S: The parallel word is Medieval.T: Good. Do you know what Classical means?S: Classical refers to the period which followed the Middle Ages.T: Yes. Have you ever seen the film Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights?Ss: Yes.T: Do you know which style the then buildings belong to? And describe the style.S: They belong to Gothic. It refers to a typical style of art and architecture in the Middle Ages, buildings of this style are very straight and after looking at them, we will find them very mysterious and sometimes we will feel afraid.T: Very good. Now you can finish Activity 1. From your answers, I can see all of you have done your homework carefully. Just now, we talked about three periods and an art and architecture style, today we will mainly talk about one of them — the Renaissance.Step Ⅱ Fast-readingDeal with the text on Page 16.T: Let’s read the text The Renaissance. Now I will give you about 6 minutes to do fast reading and then I will ask some students to talk about the general idea for each paragraph. If you can not find the answers, discuss with your partners. OK?The students will skim the text. Six minutes later.T: Everybody, time is up. Let’s talk about the main idea of each paragraph. Then the teacher can ask some of the students to show their opinions. The result may be as follows. Para 1: The Mona Lisa is believed to be a masterpiece of the Renaissance.Para 2: How Renaissance got its name.Para 3: International trade is one of the factors that made the Renaissance possible.Para 4: Renaissance artists opened new frontiers in the arts.Para 5: Philosophers began to change their attitudes to God.Para 6: the Renaissance was also a period of scientific invention and Leonardo was one of the famous scientists of that period.Para 7: Leonardo was an extraordinary genius of all time.T: Excellent. After doing this, we can finish Activity 2. Now go through the five statements in this activity, and try to check which factors made the Renaissance possible.A short time later.T: Any volunteers?S: I think number 2, number 3 and number 4 are the factors that made the Renaissance possible. We can find these three factors in paragraphs 2, 3 and 5.S: I think number 4 was not a factor. Paragraphs 4 and 5 tell us what effects the Renaissance caused. Paragraph 5 tells us philosophers began to doubt whether God was the almighty in the universe under the influence of the Renaissance, so it was an effect not a factor that made it possible.T: Very good. We have got some basic information about the passage. To further understand what the factors are, please read the passage again.Step Ⅲ Careful-readingT: This time, I’ll give you six questions on the screen to think about. When you finish your reading, please answer these questions in Activity 5.Show the following on the screen.1. Why was the Renaissance given this name?2. When and where did the Renaissance begin?3. What changes happened in Europe at this time?4. What was new about painting, music and architecture?5. How did philosophy change at this time?6. Why do people think Leonardo was an extraordinary genius as well as a great artist? The students begin to read the text carefully and think over the questions.A few minutes later.T: Do you have any ideas about the first one?S: Yes, we have. Renaissance is a French word which means “rebirth” and it was as if Europe was waking up after the long sleep of the Middle Ages.T: Yes. Next one?S: The Renaissance began in Italy in the 19th century.S: It is true that the Renaissance began in Italy, but the first sentence tells us the Renaissance means 14th to 16th century Italy, so I think it began in the 14th century. And the word “Renaissance” first appeared in English in the 19th century.T: Yes, you are right. Now go on.S: The Europeans began to explore other parts of the world, and at the same time, they traded with others, which made Europe become richer, and this meant that people had money to spend on the arts.T: And as a consequence, artists tried to change their former styles. What was new about painting, music and architecture?S: Painters discovered how to use perspective and the effects of light; composers put different voices together and created polyphony; architects preferred designing buildings with more light which contrasted with the heaviness of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages.S: Yes, the Renaissance was really a very important incident in the European history. Besides these changes, a new type of philosophy appeared. In the Middle Ages, human life was considered of little value. People had a strong belief in God. But during the Renaissance, philosophers began questioning the power of God. For the first time, they put people, not religion, at the center of the universe.T: In other words, people became more civilized. In every period, many famous representatives appear. Can you list an example during this period?S: We all know that the Mona Lisa was a masterpiece of Leonardo. He was not merely a painter, he was also a scientific inventor. At that time, he created many astonishing paintings of machineswhich were not to be built until hundreds of years later. In a word, he was an extraordinary genius who was interested in everything and with many different talents.T: Next make a summary of the main idea, the writing techniques, and the writing purpose of the text.A summary of the text:The teacher will ask the students to make the summaries one term after another, and show them out in the form one by one on the screen.Step Ⅳ Post-reading and word studyT: Let’s look at Activity 3 on Page 17. Match the words in the box with their meanings and make sentences with the words contribution, employ, talent and trade.S: Architecture means the study and design of buildings.S: Art means painting and drawing.S: Contribution means something that you give. For example, Shakespeare made great contributions to the world literature.S: Employ means to give someone a job. For example, the manager agreed to employ the applicant. S: Literature means novels, poems, etc. especially good ones.S: Philosophy is the study of the meaning of life.S: Talent means a natural skill. For example, he has a talent for music.S: Trade means business, especially between different countries. For example, he is an expert in international trade.T: OK, well done! Now let’s go on with Activity 4. We can see five explanations here, you can find acorresponding word or phrase in the passage. First skim the passage, and then I will ask you what the words or expressions are and make sentences with them.A short time later.S: The first word is mysterious. Many people are interested in the mysterious smile on her face.S: The second one is perspective. The artist plays with perspective to confuse the eyes.S: Cathedral means a large church.S: The fourth one is motivate. She is a teacher who is good at motivating her students.S: The last one is hand in hand. Poverty and poor health often go hand in hand.T: All your answers are correct and all of you did a good job. Now let’s deal with Activity 6, OK? Then check the answers with the whole class.Step Ⅴ VocabularyT: Now let’s deal with Activities 1 and 2 on Page 24 and activities on Page 98. Please do the activities by yourself and then I will check your answers. Please begin. The teacher can go among the students in case they need any help. Some time later, the teacher asks some students to read their answers to the whole class.Step Ⅵ HomeworkT: Homework for today: Please write a short passage to introduce Leonardo da Vinci.
