Be sure to book a table if the restaurant you choose is an expensive or a popular one. You will feel embarrassed to show up without booking and having to wait for a table, leaving very bad impression on your friend, especially your girl friend. Also, be sure to check to see if you need to be properly dressed and tell your friend ahead of time what to wear.

When your food arrives, proper dining manners make you eat at a right pace so that you have time to talk. A good measure of how fast you should eat is to count 10 seconds between each mouthful and it?s bad manners if you eat too fast and then spend the rest of the time watching your friend eat.

Don?t make noise when having soup and chewing, or chew with your mouth open.

Your napkin (餐巾) should be placed on your lap at all times. Don?t put it in any other place. If you have to get up, place it neatly on your seat.

When eating, put your for k straight in your mouth. Don?t plac e your fork in the side of your mouth as it increases the chances of dropping your food, which could be very embarrassing. If you get food stuck in your mouth, don?t pick it out with your fingers or fork at the table. Excuse yourself and go to the restroom and get it out with a toothpick.

When dining, keep your eyes on your friend at all times and try to smile between mouthfuls. Sometimes, you should make an effort to show some interest and ask questions lik e, “How do you like the beef?” If she needs, you are the one who is supposed to flag down the waiter by a gentle wave of the hand until someone notices you.

Last Spet.11 was an important day too. After unknown gunmen attacked aid workers from the Nobel Prize-winning Medecins sans Frontieres at a roadblock on that day, most of the international aid groups helping Darfur?s 6 million people stopped using the roads. On Dec.18, unknown gunmen attacked the southern town of Gereida. More than 70 aid workers then pulled out of the refugee (难民) camp there—Darfur?s largest, with 130,000 people—leaving only 10 Red Cross employees behind. Yet at the time no one said what had really caused the sudden pullbacks.

Damaging has become surprisingly common in Darfur, where 200,000 Africans have been killed and a third of the population have been sent fleeing into camps in three years of war. But the attacks on international aid workers suggested a dramatic and dangerous start—to attack on purpose those helping to keep Darfur?s millions of refugee alive. A dozen people from foreign NGOs (non-governmental organizations) have been killed in just the past six months, more than previous years. There are about 14,000 aid workers in Darfur now, the majority of them Sudanese, working for foreign NGOs and U.N. agencies and delivering $1 billion a year in aid. Just a few more terrible attacks could throw that into jeopardy. Last week 14 U.N. offices working in Darfur made a clear warning that “the humanitarian (人道主义) organization cannot possibly make certain the survival of the population in Darfur if aid workers don?t feel safe.”

64. What made Sept. 11 an important day according to the passage?

A. Two World Trade Center buildings were destroyed in the USA.

B. International aid workers were attacked in Darfur.

C. A fight happened between the international aid workers and some unknown gunmen in

Darfur.

D. International aid groups stopped their help to Darfur.

65. Which of the following shows a picture of Darfur?

A.Darfur has been in war since the last Sept. 11.

B.Many people in Darfur are homeless because of the war.

C.Darfur will not get help from organizations including the UN.

D.International aid groups have never been attacked before.

66. The underlined word “jeopardy” in the last paragraph most probably means __________.

A. light

B. practice

C. danger

D. effect

67. Which of the following can be the title of the passage?

A. People in Darfur

Mike Ingram had been a guard on the Ohio State football team in the late 1950s. I believe he may have been captain in his senior year. He is a tough-looking guy, a hero in Columbus, a brave fighter in a red-and-gray uniform.

One holiday season Jack and I had been at the F & R Lazarus department store downtown, and we saw, carrying a tall pile of boxes, someone who clearly was working in the Lazarus stockroom (仓库). It was Mike Ingram, post-Ohio State football player.

We stared—how could we help it? And Mike Ingram stopped in his track, looked right back at us, and said, with bite in his tone:” Yeah, it?s me.” Meaning: Go ahead and stare if you must.

Couldn?t really blame him. There was nothing wrong with what he was doing--- he was earning some money in the stockroom. But he was out in the world now, he wasn?t where he had been when everything was bathed in sunlight ; he was in Ohio Stadium, hearing the supporting shouts from 78,000 people who loved him and his teammates. He had moved past that first of life?s roles, as everyone does. It was his misfortune to have been famous very early; there must have been dozens and dozens of men in their twenties working in the Lazarus stockroom that holiday season, but Mike Ingram was the one sure to attract curious passers, because he was no longer who he was supposed to be.

68. When the writer met him in Lazarus, Mike was a __________.

A. salesman

B. manager

C. laborer

D. customer

69. By saying “how could we help it?” the writer means that __________.

A. he and his friend just can?t force themselves not to look at Mike

B. he wonders whether he and his friend can help Mike

C. he and his friend can?t stop looking at each other

D. he and his friend can do nothing to stop Mike carrying the boxes

70. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Mike used to be very popular when he played in the Ohio State football team.

B. Many other people would stare at Mike like the writer when they run into him.

C. Working as an ordinary worker, according to the writer, is Mike?s misfortune.

D. Some people accept what life gives them.

71. We can infer from the passage that when Mike was stared at, he looked __________.

A. nice

B. worried

C. shy

D. unhappy

Not even Dan Brown and his Da Vinci code-breakers (密码破译者) dared deal with the mystery of Mona Lisa?s smile. But Nicu Sebe, a computer expert at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, did. He used …emotion recognition? software to process the famous painting and found Mona Lisa happy (83 per cent) and slightly disgusted (厌烦的) (9 per cent).

Faces show emotions. Psychology, computer science, and engineering researchers are joining forces to teach machines to read expressions. If they succeed, your computer may one day “read”your mood. Machines equipped with emotional skills could also be used in teaching, gaming, mind-reading, etc.

“Mind Reader”, a system developed by Rosalind Picard at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the US, uses input from a video camera to do real-time analysis of facial

expressions. It reports on whether you seem “interested” or “agreeable” or if you?re “confused”. The system can help people recognize others? emotions. Picard says this means we could teach a machine to be as sensitive as a human. In fact, a machine can be even smarter than people since it can tell if a person is lying or just “performing” by analyzing one?s facial movements.

Jeffrey Cohn, a psychologist at the University of Pittsburgh, uses the Facial Action Coding System to recognize human emotions. The system sorts more than 40 action units (AUs) of the face to tell people?s real emotions. He studied a videotape of a criminal who said to be sad about the murder of several family members and tried to pin the blame on someone else. But Cohn saw no real sadness in the woman?s face.

Sadness is a group of AUs that is difficult to do at the same time. You have to pull down the corners of your lips while bringing your eyebrows together and raising them. What the woman did was raise her cheeks to make a lip curl (撇嘴). Her brows stayed smooth.

72. The best title of this passage is “_________”.

A. The emotion on your face

B. Look at your face

C. Your face tells a story

D. Telling a lie

73. The missing sentence “This means, even though your mouth lies, your face doesn?t, and the

machine will know it all.” should be put at the end of __________.

A. Paragraph 2

B. Paragraph 3

C. Paragraph 4

D. Paragraph 5

74. How many facial emotion analyses are mentioned in this passage?

A. Four.

B. Three.

C. Two.

D. One.

75. The underlined word “it” refers to __________.

A. MIT

B. the video camera

C. one?s face emotion

D. the real-time analysis

One possible version:

When people’s life is getting better and better, more and more people choose to spend their holidays abroad. The year 2006 sees a sharp increase in the number of overseas travelers compared with the year 2001, when the number was already more than doubled of the year 1996. It’s a good thing that Chinese tourism is developing very fast. And yet, reports about people’s bad manners flood in. Some are even asked if all Chinese spit and litter everywhere. The poor behavior has done great harm to the image of China, which is really shameful.

China has long been regarded as a country with good manners. Everybody should keep some do’s and don’ts in their mind to guide their behavior in public, home and abroad. Win respect for yourself and our country!

听力录音稿

第一节

(Text 1)

W: Why have you got your sunglasses on? It?s not that sunny outside.

M: I know, it?s quite cool today, but I?ve got a terrible headache and my eyes hurt in the light. (Text 2)

M: Are you coming to the party tonight?

W: No, I?m going to stay home and get some sleep. I?m really tired from work at the moment. (Text 3)

W: What do you think of the movie?

M: It?s rather boring.

W: I feel quite differently from you though. I am frightened to death.

M: Oh come on! It?s just a movie. I am more worried about tomorrow?s doctor appointment.

W: Don?t tell me you are nervous now. Ha! The doctor should have appeared in the movie!

(Text 4)

M: Tell me a little bit about yourself.

W: Well, I grew up in New Orleans. I left there, actually, when I was a teenager. Later we moved to Texas and then I came out to California---been there for 25 years, so I?m really, at this point,

a San Franciscan. But New Orleans is always there when I write a book.

(Text 5)

M: Have you seen the doctor again?

W: Tomorrow.

M: Any idea how long they?ll keep you in?

W: They?ll let me know on Monday. They have to do lots more tests.

第二节

(Text 6)

W: What in the world have you been doing all day? You?ve left your computer only once—to go to the restroom.

M: I told you yesterday that I had to finish editing these pictures for my webpage.

W: Are those the ones you made of me making jiaozi?

M: Yeah, exactly. I want to show everyone how a master cook makes jiaozi.

W: What do you mean when you say “everyone”?

M: Um, well, I guess I mean anyone. Anyone who happens to visit my webpage.

W: I thought it was just for your friends!

M: It is for the friends who visit my webpage—in America, New Zealand, Germany.

(Text 7)

W: Hello, Jim. What?s happening? You look so tired!

M: That?s very true. Susan?s brother arrived without notice from out of town, so I offered him a bed for a few days in my home. He?s really bothering me. For one thing, he?s eating

everything in our house nonstop. He remains awake until early in the morning watching television, then eats everything out of the refrigerator before he goes to bed.

W: I can?t stand people like that. Does he at least help you around the house?

M: He doesn?t do anything! I am busy cleaning up all day and he sleeps late until noon. Oh, and listen to this…then he gets on the telephone with his friends and invites them over.

W: Man. You had better do something quick or he?ll never leave.

(Text 8)

M: So, you?ll be attending the University of Chicago?

W: Yes, sir.

M: Congratulations, that?s a great school. What are your plans after graduate school?

W: Well, as you can see, I will be studying English literature at Chicago. It?s always been my dream to teach at Peking University, and so that?s my goal.

M: What if you find that life in the US is better? You can make more money, after all. Would you consider staying?

W: No sir, I couldn?t. My parents think it?s too dangerous to live in the US.

M: Well, we have our problems, but I think you?ll be safe. But six years is a long time. A lot of things can change. You may meet someone, or you may get a teaching offer from a good US university. You might change your mind.

W: You?re right. A lot of things can change. And, sure, some things may be a little better in the US.

But my parents have always taught me: “You can love money, but money can?t love you back.

Only family and friends can.” I?d have to come back here to my family.

(Text 9)

W: I?ve got a superhero!

M: Who?s that?

W: Chen Yanqing!

M: So you watched her winning performance at the Asian Games?

W: Yeah, she won the 58kg women?s event and got China?s fourth weightlifting gold medal.

M: How much did Chen lift?

W: She started her first part of the competition with a lift of 103kg. She then lifted 108kg on her second attempt and 111kg on her third attempt to beat the old world record of 110kg. She set two more world records later in the second part.

M: That?s great!

(Text 10)

I?m Michael Sessions. I grew up in a small town in Michigan called Hillsdale. One day when I was 15, my dad came home from his job. He had worked in the factory for 26 years. “Our company?s moving to Mexico,” he said sadly to my mom, my sister and me. “I was laid off.” We were shocked—how could he be fired from a job he?d been devoted to? Money was tight as dad went back to school. We had a hard time buying what we needed—no more dinners out or family vacations. Two long years later, dad finally got a job as a medical assistant.

One day after my senior year started, I was reading an article in the local paper about Hillsdale?s city elections. A lot of people in Hillsdale didn?t like the mayor at that time. Local companies were continuing to move out of town and lay people off, but the mayor didn?t do anything to make them stay. More and more families were going through the same bad things my

family had just recovered from.

I know it sounds crazy, but out of nowhere I thought, WHY DON?T I RUN FOR MAYOR? When I told this to my parents and friends, my mom laughed and didn?t believe me at all. But after I persuaded her I really wanted to change things in Hillsdale, she encouraged me to go for it.

I really wanted to win, but I thought there would be no way I?d beat an adult. So I couldn?t believe it when I was told I won.

Being mayor is like having a part-time job: Every day after school I meet with city officers and business owners. I?ll be mayor for four years, so in the fall I?ll go to a college nearby. And someday I?ll probably run for another office. After all, anything is possible!
