A Change in Women’s Life The important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position.Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-time or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them. Some things are almost the same, of course, but the policemen do not think much of them much of them. The first difference is that a policeman’s real life deals with the law. Most of what he learns is the law. He has to know actually what actions are against the law and what facts can be used to p rove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a lawyer, and what’s more, he has to put it into practice on his feet, in the dark and, running down a narrow street after someone he wants to talk to. Little of his time is spent in talking with beautiful girls or in bravely facing cruel criminals. He will spend most of his working life arranging millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, ordinary people who are guilty--- or not of stupid, unimportantcrimes. In our last lecture, I was talking about language as part of our semiotic system. And today I am going to move on to another topic, that is, the modes of language. As you may know, messages are transmitted in human language most frequently through two primary modes: speech and writing. Well, you know, there is also a third mode, which is not that frequently used as speech and writing. The third mode is called signing, which is used by deaf people. But in today's lecture, we will just focus on speech and writing, and the specific features of these two modes. In linguistics, it is commonly noted that speech is primary and writing secondary. Linguistics take this position because all languages are spoken except those dead languages such as Latin, which is only existent in written form. All children will naturally acquire the spoken version of a language if they are exposed to it.

Dictations from 2000——2006 2000年 What We Know About Language Many things about language are a mystery and will remain so. However, we now do know something about it. First, we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. No human race anywhere on earth is so backward that it has no language of its own at all. Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped but the languages they speak are by no means primitive. In all the languages existing in the world today, there are complexities that must have been developed for years. Third, we know that all languages are perfectly adequate. Each is a perfect means of expressing its culture. And finally, we know that language changes over time, which is natural and normal if a language is to survive. The language which remains unchanged is nothing but dead. Characteristics of a Good Reader To improve your reading habits, you must understand the characteristics of a good reader. First, the good reader usually reads rapidly. Of course, he does not read every piece of material at the same rate. But whether he is reading a newspaper or a chapter in a physics text, his reading rate is relatively fast. He has learned to read for ideas rather than words one at a time. Next, the good reader can recognize and understand general ideas and specific details. Thus he is able to comprehend the material with a minimum of effort and a maximum of interest. Finally, the good reader has at his command several special skills, which he can apply to reading problems as they occur. For the college student, the most helpful of these skills include making use of the various aids to understanding that most textbooks provide and skim-reading for a general survey. Disappearing forests The world’s forests are disappearing.∕As much as a third of the total tree cover has been lost/ since agriculture began some 10000years ago. / The remaining forests are home to half of the world species, /thus becoming the chief resource for their survival. /Tropical rain forests once covered 12%of the land of the planet / as well as supporting at least half of the world species of plants and animals./ There rain forests are home to millions of people,/ but there are other demands on them ./For example, much has been cut for timber,/ and an increasing amount of forestland has been used for industrial purposes/ or for agricultural development, such as crop growing./By the 1900s,less than half of the earth’s original rain forests remained,/ and they continue to disappear at an alarming rate every year./ As a result, the world’s forests are now facing a gradual extinction. Salmon Every year millions of salmon swim from the ocean/ into the mouths of the rivers and then steadily out of the rivers, / Passing through waters, around the rocks and waterfalls,/ the fish finally reach their original streams or lakes./ They dig up nests in the riverbed and lay their eggs. /
