In December 1940, Sir Nicholas Winton was just a 31-year-old businessman from London. He was preparing for a skiing vacation in Switzerland. But shortly before he set off, he received a call from a friend, Martin Blake. "I have a big task and I need your help," Blake told him. So Winton gave up his holiday and headed to Prague instead. There, he worked as a volunteer in a refugee camp (难民营)where thousands of Jewish families were living in terrible conditions. It became more and more clear that war was certain to break out and Winton knew that Jewish families everywhere would be in great danger when the Nazi armies arrived. "At the refugee camp, the parents at least wanted at least to get their childr en to safety when they couldn’t get visas for the whole families," Winton said. "I began to realize what suffering there was when armies came."

Winton decided to help all of the children escape. He worked late into the night after his day job, with he lp only from his mother and a few volunteer helpers. It wasn’t easy, but he managed to find foster homes (寄养家庭) for all of the children in Great Britain and Switzerland. Winton put 669 children on trains to safety over the next months. Though many of their relatives were sent to concentration camps (集中营)and never seen again, all 669 children survived the war.

Last month, a train carrying 22 of "Winton’s children" pulled into a railway station in London. Now in their 70s and 80s, the survivors came together to celebrate the 70th anniversary (周年)of their escape, and to pay a visit to Winton, who is now 100 years old.

Change is one of the common facts of life. Most of us have seen a number of changes in our own lives from simple things like fashion trends and entertainment (娱乐)to bigger changes in technology.

Language, too, has experienced change and continues to develop. The continuous change is what keeps languages alive.

Slang is a way in which languages can transform(改变)and are renewed. Slang is the use of informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in a language. Some consider slang to be witty (言辞巧妙的)and clever, adding spice to informal writing and spoken language. However, others criticize its use, believing that it weakens the language. Walt Whitman described slang as "the start of imagination and humor, breathing into its nostrils (鼻孔)the breath of life".

The spoken English language of today’s younger generation is filled with sl ang words and expressions. These lively words and phrases are an example of how language plants its own seeds of change that develop within social circumstances (环境).

Sometimes slang is the use of a word that is already in the standard dictionary, such as lift (to pick up, rise), is given a new meaning, such as "to steal"; or hunk (a large piece of something) which has now become "a handsome man". Other times, slang is an invented word, such as chocoholic, which means "a person who loves chocolate". Other invented words are mula, which means "money" and airhead, which means "a person who is stupid".

Now, you’ll understand your friends if they say something like: "I was such an airhead to think that I could get away with lifting a whole box of chocolates from the store just because I was all out of mula."

69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

B. People hold different opinions towards slang.

C. An "airhead" refers to a person who is out of money.

D. "Hunk" is an invented word.

70. What’s the main idea of the text?

A. The origin of slang.

B. An introduction to slang.

C. An analysis of language change.

Imagine what you could do with a machine that could make things disappear.

For inspiration (灵感), you could read some books. In the books of J.R.R. Tolkein, Bilbo Baggins finds a ring that can make himself disappear. Of course, there’s also Harry Potter, who uses his invisibility cloak (隐形斗篷) to hide from danger.

Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time for the h ard part: building the cloak. To do that, you have to give up science fiction and turn to real science. An invisibility cloak has to cheat anyone that might be watching. In order to understand how something can be seen, it’s important to understand how we see.

Human beings can only see objects that reflect (反射) light waves. These waves enter the eyes and are then processed (处理) by the brain. However, if an object doesn’t reflect light, then the waves don’t enter the eyes, and the brain doesn’t process. So building an invisibility cloak is building something that doesn’t reflect light. Cummer, part of a team of scientists from Duke University, including David Smith and David Schurig, built the world’s first version of an invisibility cloak. They had been inspired by the work of a British physicist, John Pendry. He said that an invisibility cloak was possible and Pendry was not the only one thinking about a disappearing act. At the same time, a Scottish physicist, Ulf Leonhardt published a paper on building invisibility equipment.

"It wasn’t easy," says Cummer. "As often happens in science and research, it didn’t work very well the first time. That first cloak didn’t work like Harry Potter’s —the scientists didn’t actually see anything disappear. So the research is still under way."

71. Which of the following statements about Cummer is TRUE?

A. He is a researcher from Duke University.

B. He was the first to come up with a disappearing act.

C. He published a paper on invisibility cloaks.

D. He was inspired by Ulf Leonhardt.

72. From the text we are told that the research on an invisibility cloak ______.

A. was led by Pendry

B. was very successful

C. was used in HarryPotter

D. was challenging

73. The fourth paragraph is mainly about ______.

A. the principle of building an invisibility cloak

B. the reason for building an invisibility cloak

C. the effect of building an invisibility cloak

D. the result of building an invisibility cloak

74. From the text, we can know that ___________.

A. the idea of building an invisibility cloak first came from Harry Potter

B. one must give up science fiction to do real science

C. the research of building an invisibility cloak is still going on

D. the invisibility cloak is mainly used in movies

75. Which of the following would be the best title?

A. The Science of Disappearing

B. The Hardest Part of Building a Cloak

C. The Invention of an Invisibility Cloak

D. The Science in Movies

第四部分书面表达(共两节, 满分45分)

第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

[1] English is often said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. This is for several reasons. For example, words in English are often pronounced differently from how they are spelled and even though there are rules for pronunciation, there are many exceptions (例外) to the rules. Sometimes, even if you have a good command of English, still you may have trouble with other people’s accents. [2] In fact, not everyone who speaks English as a second language has an accent. Learning a new language comes easily to small children. This is because the part of the brain that is responsible for learning languages is not fully developed until the early teen years. As we get older, it becomes more difficult to learn a new language. An adult learning English, therefore, will always have some accent. The amount of the accent will depend on several factors, such as the age at which English was picked up, the person’s gift for learning new languages, and how long one has studied the language.[3] We can often tell where a person is from _______. This is because each language has its own sound system. When people learn a new language, they naturally take their sound system with them. They try to match the sounds from the new language with sounds from their native language. Because the new language naturally contains some sounds that are different from sounds in the native language, the sounds cannot be matched exactly. This creates an accent and is why we can generally recognize a perso n’s native language by his or her accent. [4] The goal of accent reduction isn’t necessarily to remove an accent. It mainly aims to improve your spoken English, so that

it is clearer and easier to understand. The bottom line is that an accent should not get in the way of communication. The most important thing is that people understand you so make sure you speak confidently even if you have an accent.

76. List three factors that determine the amount of your accent. (within 10 words)

①_________ ②_________ ③_________

77. Why do new languages come easily to small children? (within 10 words)
