Knut lived in Berlin?s zoo. He was four and raised by zookeepers since a cub (幼崽) after his mother deserted him.

Now reports say the attention-loving polar bear was found dead in a pool in his cage at the Zoologischer Garten Berlin Saturday, with no immediate cause of death announced.

“This is awful,” said Berlin?s mayor Klaus Wowereit, according to the Sydney Herald. “We had all taken him to our hearts. He was the star of the Berlin Zoo.”

Most reports say Knut was alone when he died, as visitors watched him suddenly fall into the water. The known news site https://www.doczj.com/doc/3815314620.html, carried news of his death and s ays People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals? German branch had previously complained that Knut suffered a lot from his mother and other bears.

Knut was very famous to many people, only because he seemed to love the limelight (出风头). After his first performance at the popular zoo, he became its star attraction, raising much income for the zoo and producing toys, DVDs and more. He was not diagnosed as being ill at the time, reports say. An investigation (调查) into the cause of his death is underway.

To ever yone?s surprise, his beloved keeper, Thomas Doerflein, also died at an early age. Doerflein died at 44 in 2013 in his apartment after he had fed the cub and slept by its side, but later was told no longer to play or wrestle with Knut. “People should ha ve one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective sacrifice(牺牲) that would help deal with climate change,” the world?s leading authority on global warming has told The Observer.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.

Pachauri, who was re-elected the panel?s chairman for a second six-year term last week, said diet change was important because of the huge greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and other environmental problems associated with raising cattle and other animals. “It was relatively easy to change eating habits compared to changing means of transport,” he said.

The UN?s Food and Agriculture Organisat ion has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These are produced during the production. For example, ruminants (反刍动物), particularly cows, give off a gas called methane(甲烷), which is 23 times more effective as a global warming agent than CO2.

Pachauri can expect some opposite responses from the food industry to his advice, though last night he was given unexpected support by Masterchef presenter and restaurateur John Torode. “I have a little bit and enjoy it,” said Torode. “Too much for any person is bad. But there?s a bigger issue here: where the meat comes from. If we all bought British and stopped buying imported food, we?d save a huge amount of carbon emissions.”

Professor Robert Watson, the chief scientific adviser for the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, said government could help educate people about the benefits of eating less meat, but it should not regulate. “Eating less meat would help, there?s no question about that,” Wats on said.

However, Chris Lamb, head of marketing for pig industry group BPEX, said the meat industry had been unfairly targeted and was working hard to find out which activities had the biggest environmental impact and reduce them. “Some ideas were contradictory,” he said. “For example, one solution to emissions fr om cattle and other animals was to keep them indoors, but this would damage animal welfare. Climate change is a very young science and our view is there are a lot of simple solutions being propose d.”

8. What is directly related to global warming?

A. Consumption of meat.

B. Growth of cattle.

C. Methane from ruminants.

D. Processing of meat.

9. Who holds a view opposite to the others? in the passage?

A. Rajendra Pachauri.

B. John Torode.

C. Robert Watson.

D. Chris Lamb.

10. It is implied in the passage that _____.

A. we should try to keep away from cattle

B. ruminants should not be left outdoors

C. the meat industry will soon close down

D. we must do our duty to save the earth

11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

A. Less meat, slower global warming

B. More animals, more greenhouse gas

C. Less imported food, better our environment

D. Greater diet change, smaller climate change

Bobby Qualls was shopping when he received a text message: Fire on Beechmont, one-story house, child trapped inside. “I was picking out gifts for the family our engine house adopted for Christmas,” remembers Qualls, who has been fighting fires in Memphis for 24 years. “I had this sinking feeling as I got in my car and headed over.”

The last time Qualls had been on Beechmont Street was to install smoke detectors (感应器) at the Bateman-Tubbs home. He?d been on a secret task to see if they needed extra help during the holidays. There he discovered that the four Bateman-Tubbs children were sleeping on bare mattresses (床垫), and he found two of the boys playing outside in 30-degree weather with no shoes or coats.

Qualls learned that Leonard Tubbs was doing his best to make ends meet laying floors while Kimberly Bateman stayed home with the kids.

“When Bobby told me his team wanted to be Secret Santas and buy my kids toys, at first I thought we didn?t need any help,” Bateman recalls. “It really touched me. I told him what the kids really needed was warm clothes.”

That?s exactly what Qualls was shopping for on December 9, 2010: winter jackets for Christopher, seven; JoJo, four; Madison, one; and two-month-old Charles. While driving over to Beechmont Street, he dialed Bateman?s cell phone. She answered on the first ring, screaming, “The house is on fire—JoJo?s trapped inside!”

By the time Qualls reached the house, the family had gotten out, but their home was severely damaged. His coworkers had found JoJo hiding under a pile of clothes in a back bedroom. He had stopped breathing and had been given CPR(心肺复苏) and rushed to the hospital. Qualls learned that JoJo was now on life support and might not make it through the night. He rushed to the hospital with Lt. Mark Eskew, who placed a stuffed teddy bear in a firefighter?s suit on JoJo?s bed.

“I just kept praying my little boy would open his eyes,” Bateman recalls. “There was nothing else I could do.

They were pumping black and thick liquid out of his lungs an d stomach for days.”

After a few days, though, JoJo regained consciousness, and the tubes were taken out of his throat. While he began to slowly recover, the local newspaper and TV stations got hold of the story, and the Secret Santa Plan of Qualls and his fellow firefighters snowballed. Before long, the fire station was overflowing with boxes of toys, food, towels, and clothes. People called, wanting to donate furniture and appliances (电器) too. By December 23, Bateman and Tubbs had moved their kids into a new rental home. By Christmas Eve, JoJo was ready to leave the hospital, and the firefighters were ready to deliver the family their very own Christmas miracle.

“These guys aren?t just firefighters,” says Bateman, “they?re our guard ian angels. If t hey hadn?t installed a smoke detector that first day they came to our house, we wouldn?t have known when the fire started. Then they went the extra ten miles to give us a Christmas.”

12. What did Qualls do after he received a text message?

A. He drove to the burning house.

B. He hurried to the fire station.

C. He went to pick out gifts.

D. He went shopping in Beechmont.

13. Who saved JoJo out of the burning house?

A. Bobby Qualls.

B. Leonard Tubbs.

C. Kimberly Bateman.

D. Firefighters.

14. We can infer from the reading that _______.

A. JoJo is a naughty child

B. smoke detectors are very useful

C. Tubbs? home is filled with gifts

D. the fire was caused by the bare mattress

15. The purpose of this story is to _______.

A. encourage people to install smoke detectors

B. advise people to take good care of their children

C. ask people to give gifts to the firemen

D. praise the firemen for their good deeds

Parents can help their seventh and eighth grade students stand out in and out of their English classroom by introducing them to newspapers. Newspapers not only offer information on current events, but they can also be used to test your child's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and more.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How

Have your child read the first couple of paragraphs of a news story. Ask them to write down all of the important facts, such as who, what, where, when, why and how. This helps parents to see if their children comprehend the basic facts and information they read.

Grammar

Parents can monitor a child's understanding of grammatical parts of speech (词性) without a grammar textbook. Ask your child to read a paragraph in an article and then list a specific number of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and the like, which serves more of a test of their grammatical knowledge. Encourage them to list each of these parts of speech in a paragraph. Then, reread the paragraph to see if they missed anything.

Persuasion

Ask your child to select an advertisement from the newspaper. Have them investigate how specific words or phrases influence their feelings about a particular product. Then, encourage them to create an advertisement of their own for an item they do not like. Tell them not to show their true feelings and try to make people want to buy this unwanted item. After that, ask them to list the persuasive techniques used in their ad.

Facts vs Opinions

Select an editorial for your middle schooler to read. Have your child divide a piece of paper into two columns, one marked fact, and the other marked opinion. Have your student decide which column it fits under. This will help your child better understand facts versus opinions. Another related exercise is responding to an editorial.

Encourage your child to write letters to the editor or responses to editorials or other articles. Before your child sends his or her letter, check the opinion section to see what requirements there are.

Headlines and Synonyms (同义词)

Ask your middle schooler to rewrite a couple of headlines using the synonyms of the original words. Compare the headlines. Do the original versions or the rewrites sound better? This is a great exercise to help students learn synonyms and expand their vocabulary.

If you find your seventh or eighth grade child is struggling with these newspaper activities, it may be an indicator that they have fallen behind in their reading skills. These activities were designed with a seventh or eighth grader in mind; therefore, while they are educational, they should be more of reinforcement (增强) instead

Taking Part in School Activities

Many students are very interested in school activities; they have their reasons. Firstly, they think that learning from textbooks is not their only task. They believe that they should take every chance to get some practical knowledge. Secondly, they think that after long hours of study, they can relax themselves by taking part in school activities.

However, a large group of students take little interest in them and spend most of their time

on studies. First, they believe that they should make full use of time to study. Second, they feel that school activities have little to do with their further development.

In my opinion, I prefer the first view. On one hand, we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities. Besides, the modern society requires of young students many qualities, so only learning from textbooks is not enough.

Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA. He smokes a lot of cigarettes (香烟) every day. He has smoked for nine years. Ali says, “ I tried to quit (放弃) smoking in my hometown, but it was impossible. My brothers smoke. All my friends smoke. At parties and at meetings, almost all the men smoke. Here in the United States, not as many people smoke. It will be easier to change my habit here.”

Many smokers are like Ali: they want to stop smoking. The smokers know that smoking is bad for their health. They know it can cause cancer and heart disease. But it is difficult for them to give up smoking because cigarettes have a drug in them. The drug is nicotine (尼古丁). People who smoke a lot need nicotine.

When a person first begins to smoke, he usually feels terrible. The nicotine makes him sick. In a few days, the smoker?s body is used to the nicotine, and he feels fine. Later, the smoker needs nicotine to keep feeling fine. Without nicotine, he feels bad.

It is very hard to quit smoking, and many people who quit will soon smoke again. At a party or at work they will decide to smoke “just one” cigarette. Then they will smoke another cigarette, and another. Soon they become smokers again. Maybe there is only one easy way to quit smoking: never start.

Seven tips to good table manners

Whether it's dinner at a friend's house or a business meeting over lunch, we judge people based on their table manners. But what can you do if your kids do not behave themselves at the dinner tables? The following are seven tips to set your children on the road to good table manners:

●Look for the good. Instead of pointing out(指出) all the things your children do wrong, point out what they do right. Please say, for example, “ I am so proud of you. It was wonderful the way you served yourself.”

●Don?t turn dinner into an unpleasant “lecture time”. That will turn kids off not only manners, but dinner, and you, too.

●Check your ow n example. Don't show up for dinner in just your underwear (内衣) unless you want your kids to do the same.

●Don't always consider your kids lazy and dirty ones. Instead, point out the behavior in a tender way. For example: “It?s a good idea to unfold your napkin, so if food falls you won?t dirty your clothes.”

●Teach your kids good manners in the form of a game. One night a week, try to have a formal dinner. Try dressing up, serve a special meal, and expect more formal manners. That will help improve their sense ( 意识) of manners.

● Make kids understand part of the tradition. Invite guests over and let kids help serve them. This helps them indirectly learn about table manners.

●Try dining out once in a while. Fast food restaurants aren't counted(算在内). Try a nice restaurant and let kids order their own food, pay the bill and give the tip.

9. The passage is mainly written for ____.

A. kids

B. parents

C. hosts

D. guests

10. Which of the following should parents do to help their kids learn good table manners?

A.Try dining out in fast food restaurants once in a while

B. Point out what?s wrong with the kids?behavior at dinner.

C. Keep telling the kids how to behave themselves at dinner.

D. Improve kids? sense of manners by having a formal dinner at times.

11. The kids should do the following EXCEPT ______.

A. going to a formal dinner in underwear

B. helping parents to serve the guests

C. ordering their own food and paying the bill

D. unfolding the napkin to keep their clothes clean

12. The underlined part“turn kids off”in the second tip probably mean “_____”

A. make kids pleased with

B. make kids interested in

C. make kids tired of

D. make kids fond of

LEEDS, England-A Leeds University psychology(心理学)professor is teaching a course to help dozens of people forgive(stop being angry with)their enemies.

“The hatred (憎恨) we hold within us is a cancer,”Professor Ken Hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

More than 70 people have become members in Hart?s first 20-week workshop in London—a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.

These are people who are sick and tired of living with a memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out, but they end up drinking it themselves, said Canadian-born Hart.

The students meet in groups of eight to ten for a two-hour workshop with an adviser every fortnight.(= two weeks)

The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid o f the cancer of hate in these people.“People have lots of negative(消极的)attitudes towards forgiveness,” he said.“People confuse(把……混同)forgiveness with forgetting. Forgiveness means changing from a negative attitude to a positive one(积极的态度)”.

Unit 1 Lights, camera, action! Reading Behind the scenes 幕后 Hello, everyone!Let me start by asking you a question:what's the first thing you notice about a film? The acting? The music?Maybe the amazing sets?Whatever your answer is,there's always a lot more to it than first meets the eye.Actually, the film you see on the screen is the product of a huge amount of hard work, most of which takes place behind the scenes.Today,I'll give you a brief introduction to some aspects of film-making you might not be familiar with.

To begin with,l'd like to draw your attention to an important factor of a film-sound affects. These are often added after a scene has been shot and might not be made in the way you would expect. For example,in Jurassic park, the sounds of different animals, including a baby elephant and a tiger, were mixed by a computer to make a dinosaur roar. The sound of the doors opening in the Star Trek films was made simply by pulling a sheet of paper out of an envelope. Another aspect I attach great importance to is visual special effects.CGI has been frequently used in film—making as a special effects technology.Generally, scenes requiring CGI are filmed in front of a green in the studio. As green doesn't match any natural hair or skin colour, actors can be easily separeted from the

A={a, b ,c}。 a、 b、 c 就是集合 A 中的元素,作a∈ A,相反, d 不属于集合A,作 dA 。 指集合中的元素排列没有序,如集合A={1,2},集合 例:集合A={1,2},B={a,b},若 A=B,求 a、 b 的。 子集, A 包含于 B,:,有两种可能 (1)A 是 B 的一部分, (2)A 与 B 是同一集合, A=B, A、B 两集合中元素都相同。 A是 C 的子集,同 A 也是 C 的真子集。 2.真子集 :如果 AB, 且 AB 那就集合 A 是集合 B 的真子集,作 AB(或BA)

关系代词有that, which, who,whom,whose,as等;关系副词有when,where,why等。 The car which my uncle had just bought was destroyed in the earthquake.句中,the car 为先行词;which是关系词引导是定语从句which my uncle had just bought,同时代替先行词the car在定语从句中作主语。 1. that指人时,相当于who或whom;指物时,相当于which。 He said he was a Frenchman,which/as was not true. As is known to all,China is a socialist country. China is a socialist country, as/which is known to all. 2. I don't know the foreigner with whom my teacher shook hands.(或I don't know the foreigner whom my teacher shook hands with.)
