Passage 2 在美国太早太晚打电话都是不礼貌的,不同地方时间的意义不同In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours,

he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. (260 words)

36. What is the main idea of this passage? ____B______

A. It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.

B. The role of time in social life over the world.

C. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the

U.S.

D. Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.

37. What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______B___

A. A matter of work.

B. A matter of life or death.

C. You want to see him or her.

D. You want to make an appointment with him or her.

38. Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend? ______B____

A. at 7: 00 am.

B. at 4:00 pm.

C. at the midnight.

D. at 4:00 am.

39. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ____D______

A. In the U.S.A guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party

is extended only three or four days before the party date.

B. There is no misunderstanding arising between people from different cultures about the

concept of time.

C. It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..

D. Promptness is valued highly in American life.

40. From the passage we can safely infer that ____B______.

A. it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in day time

B. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world

C. it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business party

D. if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanation

Passage 3 外国人对美国人的第一印象很可能是美国人个个都在压力之下

A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. i s likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.

Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to m ake room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.

You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is b ecause people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting” it beyond a certain courtesy point.

The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us h ave what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some returnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life.

Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caféor coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly. (348 words)

41. Which of the following statements is wrong? ____D______

A. Americans seem to be always under pressure.

B. Americans attach less importance to patience.

C. Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.

D. Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.

42. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means _____B_____.

A. a less important thing

B. a first concern

C. a good business

D. an attractive gift

43. Americans evaluate a business colleague ____D______.

A. through social courtesy

B. through prolonged business talks

C. by establishing business relations

D. by learning about their past performance

44. This passage mainly talks about ____A______.

A. how Americans treasure their time

B. how busy Americans are every day

C. how Americans do business with foreigners

D. what American way of life is like

45. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is ____C_______.

A. critical

B. ironical

C. appreciative

D. objective

Passage Four

Betty and Harold have been married for years, but one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ball-game, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking?

What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?

Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian spent two years interviewing

more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is marked and unmistakable.

More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress. Robin says, “M ost women have at lest one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment. They spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”

Rubin in her new book writes, “W omen’s relationships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.”For the most part, interactions between men are emotionally controlled – a good fit with the social requirements of manly behavior.

Even a man has a best friend, the two share little about their inner feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.

46. What old Harold can’t understand or explain is the fact that ___B__.

A) he is treated as an outsider rather than a husband

B) women have so much to share

C) women show little interest in ball-games

D) he finds his wife difficult to talk to

47. Rubin’s study shows that for emotionally support a married woman is more likely to turn to

__B___.

A) a male friend B) a female friend C) her parents D) her husband

48. According to the text, which type of behavior is NOT expected of a man by society? C

A) Ending his marriage without good reason.

B) Spending too much time with his friends.

C) Complaining about his marriage trouble.

D) Going out to ball-games too often.

49. Which of the following statements is best supported by the last paragraph? D

A) Men keep their innermost feelings to themselves.

B) Women are more serious than men about their marriage.

C) Men often take sudden action to end their marriage.

D) Women depend on others in making decisions.

50. The research done by Rubin centers around ___B___.

A) happy and successful marriage B) friendships of men and women

C) emotional problems in marriage D) interactions between men and women

1. Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3,000 U.S. adolescents will smoke their first cigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that of these 3,000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by a smoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death. Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking rates among youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised. First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late 1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. The statistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicate high school dropouts have excessively high smoking rates, as much as 75 percent . Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definite reasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort to determine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth. 1. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by _____. A. traffic accidents B. smoking-related diseases C. murder D. all of these 2.
