One of the pleasant aspects of my new life in Beijing has been rediscovering what it’s like to have a lunch break. One and a half hours to do whatever I want. That’s enough time to meet friends and have an actual sit down lunch. At my old job in Australia, the most common sit down lunches I had were at my desk. Here, you can go for a walk or go to the gym, or be productive and get some chores done. Some of my colleagues even take a nap. I’ve never had such a good work life balance.

CCTV reported a recent case of a 24-year-old engineer believed to have died from overwork. While the overtime problem was news to me, it didn’t take much digging to see pressure on workers to remain at their desks way past their 8 hours is up. Even those that clock off on time are only a phone call or an email away thanks to the Internet and mobile phones.

It is estimated that 600,000 C hinese die from working too hard each year. Although it’s hard to pin down exactly what fatal conditions count towards that, it’s an alarming figure. Overtime in short bursts is not a bad thing. It gives companies the flexibility to cope with particularly busy times or short term issues. The problem is when the increased workload becomes the norm.

So what can be done about it? We can convince someone to go home when they are desperate to impress their superiors, or fear being regarded as a slacker if they don’t work round the clock, depend more on their colleagues than the boss. No one wants to be the first out the door, but if everyone in a division or team jointly decides not. to stay back all hours, no one can be singled out. Excessive overtime is broader than just a workplace culture. Adjusting that mindset to allow for a better work life balance will be much harder than changing workers’ diets.

Most college students in China have to take part in CET-4 and CET-6 tests. But in the near future, the tests will become history since the Ministry of Education is now drafting a unified national English testing and rating system and is preparing the corresponding exams.

The draft of the rating system will be officially released next year, and the national tests will be carried out st ep by step before 2020. The conference also introduced the new system’s grading level, which will range from a low to a high, with nine grades in total. Each grade has its own requirements for language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, translating and interpreting. This new system together with the exam will provide Chinese students with a much more clear vision throughout their process of learning English, as it provides a consistent standard for all English learners from primary school to university.

Currently in China, there are numerous national English tests, including CET, TEM (Test for English Majors), PETS (Public English Test System), and NETEM (National Entrance Test of English for MA/MS Candidates). However, without a consistent and orderly standard, students sometimes have to take several different tests in order to meet various needs, whether for academic performance at school, a higher education application or for job hunting or promotion. The system also means more opportunities for non-English major students.

Su Hengyao, 25, a graduate student majoring in law at Beijing Normal University, has passed the CET-6 and wants to take the TEM-8, but because of her non-English major, she hasn’t had the opportunity. But I think after this national rating system is implemented, I could take the test of a certain level and tell others that my English language ability is at a specific level. According to the conference, for those who already have CET certificates or are now preparing f or next month’s CET-4 and CET-6, there’s no need to worry about the effectiveness of the tests’ results. The certificates gained before the unified rating system will still be acknowledged by the country for a long time.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has developed an unprecedented VR payment technology, which allows users to pay for goods and services with a simple gesture.

Alibaba affiliate Ant Financial showed the cutting-edge technology during the 2016 Computing Conference held in Hangzhou on Oct. 13. By using VR equipments, a simple gesture such as a nod or even a stare allows Alipay users to pay for goods and services. The technology will be put into commercial use in the future.

According to the report, users can check the details of online goods by VR glasses, and confirm purchases by nodding or staring at the goods on screen. Traditionally, VR technologies have only been used to show case items, meaning that users have to remove the VR equipments to complete the order manually. With the help of the new technology, however, users can keep their gears in place while shopping online, upgrading the whole shopping experience.

Apart from VR payment technology, facial recognition will also be used on Alipay soon. Alipay has developed the world’s first facial eyeprint recognition technology, with an accuracy of 99.5 percent. By using this technology, users won’t be able to use any mobile applications or codes when finishing a purchase.
