The 81-year-old was presented with the medical prize by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation on September 23, 2011 in New York.

Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are considered one of the most important marine weapons in the 20th century. So far, only two countries in the world, the USA and France, have ever produced them. But these fearful fighting machines are about to enter Asia.

The US Navy said last month that one of its nine nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be sent to Japan to replace the diesel(柴油)-powered carrier Kitty Hawk in 2008. In an agreement on October 30, the two countries also planned to level up their military (军事的) cooperation and the USA called for Japan to take a larger role in alliance military moves.

It will be the first time that a nuclear-powered carrier is based in Japan. Bombed by US forces in World War Ⅱ at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is the only world country to have been attacked by a nuclear weapon. Therefore, the citizens are highly sensitive to where nuclear-powered weapons are based.

“A radiation leak at Yokosuka would kill 100,000 people as far away as Tokyo, and could cause billions of dollars in damage,” said Masahiko Goto, leader of a protest group in Yokosuka. His group has collected more than 300,000 signatures of people across Japan opposed to the nuclear carrier.

The 44-year-old Kitty Hawk, the US Navy's oldest active ship, has been based in Yokosuka since 1998. It had returned to the US to be decommissioned in 2008. The new carrier, yet to be unveiled,_will travel faster, be capable of supporting longer operations and carry with it the Navy's most modern technology.

Experts pointed that this change is not only to strengthen the US-Japan military alliance but also to keep the military power of China and North Korea within limits. However, even Japanese experts don't believe that the two countries are threats to the region.

“There is no need for Japan to have a nuclear carrier as defense,” said Tetsuo Maeda, an international relations professor at Tokyo International University. He said that the change of ship indicates an increased military capability in the region, much more than what is needed.

40.With such a formidable weapon to enter its country, Japanese citizens ________.

A.are aware of its benefits to the country

B.are anxious about its potential danger

C.are curious about the advanced technology

D.are against where the carrier will be based

41.The underlined word “unveiled” in the fifth paragraph probably means________.

A.perfected B.discussed about

C.produced D.brought to view

42.By his remark in the last paragraph, the professor means that________.

A.he is quite confident of their military defense

B.he is completely opposed to a new nuclear carrier

C.what is needed is far more than a nuclear carrier

D.it is unnecessary to guard against the two countries

C

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural(乡下的) areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.

In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.

In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼)and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.

But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

A.where people can buy things

B.which is suitable for living in

45.Which of the following statement is NOT true about the business district?

A.Big companies usually have their main offices in the business district.

B.People usually work and live in the business district.

C.A business district usually lies in the city center downtown.

D.Nearly every major city has its own business district.

Wondering how many calories the banana cream pie on your plate has? Some Japanese have a novel way to find out: Photograph it with a cellphone and send the image to an expert. With cellphones becoming common in Japan and rising concern over expanding waistlines, health-care providers will allow the calorie-conscious people to send photos of their meals to nutritionists for advice.

Public health insurance offices in Osaka in Western Japan have launched the service on a trial basis. About 100 cardiac patients signed up in the first year, followed by diabetes and obesity patients in the second. “Japanese have been getting fatter, especially men in their 20s and 30s. There is concern over what they learned about nutrition when they were younger,” the Osaka official, Satomi Onishi said. “We’re hoping that this program can help us deal with the problem.”

Osaka is using a system developed by Asahi Kasei Corp. The system is operating among about 150 health-care providers and local governments around the country. Nutritionists can work with photos from one day’s meals to several weeks’ worth. Results come back in three days. People can also log on a website to get further information.

Dr Yutaka Kimura has developed a similar system at Kansai Medical University’s Hirakata Hospital, also in Osaka. Five patients have taken part in the programme, which costs $37 to join and $21 per month. Patients photograph meals over the course of three to seven days, and a nutritionist e-mails advice to them. “Patients used to fill in meal logs, but peop le tend to forget things or underestimate their portions,” Kimura said. “Photographing meals and e-mailing them can be easier and get more accurate results.”

As Japanese have turned to bigger portions and more meat and fried foods, obesity and related illnesses such as high blood pressure have become a rising concern. The Health Ministry estimated last year that more than half of Japanese men and about one in five women between 40 and 70 years old were at the increased risk of heart disease, type Ⅱ diabetes and other diseases because of obesity. With the Health Ministry hoping to see a 25% reduction in the number of people at the risk of these diseases by 2015, Osaka officials hope the cellphone program will help.

out of sight看不见;in a mess乱七八糟;at sea茫然;in the dark在黑暗中,蒙在鼓里。

have effect on对……

12.D make the most of“利用”;keep up with“跟上,赶上”;make fun of“取笑”;come to terms with“忍受”,由句意可知选D项。

下文的“I sniffed in the back of the classroom”是线索提示。

do sb.good表示“对某人有好处”。

24.D根据下一段中的“I'm sorry you were hurt.”

A

从第三段的her “drug therapy (治疗) for malaria that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world…”

根据第四段第二句“A child in elementary school can start learning about how

b usinesses work.”可知。

C

由第二段第一句话“In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work.”

由倒数第二段后半部分的“Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center.”

由第一段开头“Facebook means never having to say g oodbye. The social media website has earned a reputation for reconnecting old friends.” 注意原文中的“reconnecting old friends”就是选项中的get in touch with old friends。

由第二段的第一句话可以得出答案,作者的确获得了一些这位朋友的信息:he was in a relationship and had a son。

由第三段中的“My pool of friends consists of….There are 35 in all.”

由下文的“Some things shouldn't be simplified. When it comes to friendship, there can be no shortcuts.”

由最后两段,特别是文章最后一句“When it comes to friendship, there can be no shortcuts.”

53.in根据文章最后一段“…obesity and related illnesses such as high blood pressure have become a rising co ncern…at the increased risk of heart disease, type Ⅱ diabetes and other diseases because of obesity.”

54.reduce根据最后一段中的“With the Health Ministry hoping to see a 25% reduction in the number of people at the risk of these dise ases by 2015, Osaka officials hope the cellphone program will help.”

55.getting/being根据文章第二段中的“Japanese have been getting fatter,…We’re hoping that this program can help us deal with the problem.”

56.nutrition

57.taken根据“work with photos from one day’s meals to several weeks’ worth”中可知照片是被拍摄,故用taken。

58.logging根据文章第三段最后一句“People can also log on a website to get further information.”

59.e-mailed根据文章第四段“…a nutritionist e-mails advice to them.”

Dear_Ms_Kate,

I'm_Li_Hua._Four_years_ago,_I_received_your_letter_and_schooling_fees. I'm very grateful for your kindness and generosity.

But for your help, I couldn't enjoy a wonderful college life in the beautiful campus right now. I've made a lot of friends here. More-over, I am studying hard so as to acquire an abundant knowledge of English, which is my major. In fact, I'm making progress each day. Only in this way can I learn more and use what I've known to help those in need as well. Besides, I'm determined to go back to my hometown after graduation and devote myself to building my hometown, to make it more prosperous and beautiful.

Words seem to fail me when I try once more to express my thanks to you, and I'll keep my promise and not let you down.

Yours_sincerely,

Li_Hua
