Passage Two

What a strange world this would be if everyone told the truth! Even though the whole world claim to dislike lies, it seems that lying is a universal communication style. Most of us get angry at big lies, but how about truth-telling in our private life? Should we always tell the truth to husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and children?

Public opinion polls find that only about one in ten Americans say they never tell a lie. Some studies showed that each student actually told about two lies a day. Half of all adults interviewed in a radio poll last year admitted they had told a lie they regretted, and many said they had been deeply hurt by a lie someone told them.

Researchers asked some people to describe the lies they told over a period of weeks. They nearly all stressed that what they told were white lies, and denied having told serious lies.

We tell more different lies to men than to women. Men and women tell more lies about themselves when talking to men, but more lies about others when talking to women. Men are particularly likely to lie about themselves. Women tell more lie than men, but only because women tell white lies in order to make others feel comfortable.

Surveys show that nearly everyone bel ieves most people are truthful. That’s why people are so bad at detecting lies. Psychologists have even tested the lie-detecting ability of police officers, judges, customs inspectors and others whose jobs need to detect lies. In these studies, these people were no better at detecting lies than ordinary people.

Passage Three

People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man’s release of completely new and often

artificial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.

The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new and complex goods are produced there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some cases, artificial fertilizers cannot restore the balance.

Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.

In towns or cities where pollution levels are high, air can be filtered through air pipes in the roof of an underground housing or industrial complex. A world underwater At the docks you step into a shiny metal submarine that is shaped like a shark. The door is closed behind you, and powerful engine starts to push. Down slides the submarine--like a shark diving. Deeper and deeper under the water. Soon all sunlight is gone. The headlights of the diving ship are turned on. Then, six miles below, you come to the sea bottom. From the diving submarine, you change to tiny jet boat and ride along close to the bottom of the ocean, almost as you would skim over the land in an air-plane. As you travel, you have fun looking out the window at the sights on the bottom of the ocean. You see strange fish and underwater mountains, cliffs, and valleys. But more than that--hotels and mining camps and farms and factories! A world in space Let's go back to dry land and take a future journey the other way-up instead of down. Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon Camp. You walk around on the moon in a special moon suit. You visit an observatory where a giant telescope looks far into space--farther than anyone has ever been able to see from Earth. You go deep down into one of the moon mines. After you have visited the moon, you visit the Mars Colony and the Venus Exploration Outpost. A new world on the Earth Let's go back to Earth. In the far, far future, girls--and boys, too--may be playing with dolls that look like the people of the planets visited by our spacemen. To control or run all kinds of toys, boys and girls may learn to use special computers --machines that answer questions and do arithmetic faster than you can blink. Bicycles and perhaps skates may be run by jet power, and a new thing to ride may be a small flying saucer. Imagine a race between them! Hospitals will probably have "body banks" that can give you almost any new part you need to keep on living. People of the future may live to be a lot older than 100 years. TV Are you wondering whether there'll be television in the future? There'll almost certainly be wonderful programs. Television screens probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you. Highways What about highways of the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Nobody will need to steer. Electric signals will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the "driver" wants to go. And it probably will be impossible for cars to smash together. Controls that won't even have to be touched will make all speeding cars miss each other or will put on the brakes. Driving by car will be as safe as being at home.
