1、Topic:The main purpose of public libraries is to provide books and they shouldn’t waste their limited resources and space on providing expensive hi-tech media such as computer software, videos and DVDs.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

With the advent of new technology, libraries have been given new means of storing and retrieving information on media by the age digital devices are widely used in public libraries and they serve both the library and the readers.

Someone would argue that multimedia facilities are expensive. This may be true to some extent, because a DVD player is often more expensive than a bookshelf. However, with immense storage capacity, these new high-tech media can actually save the most valuable resource-space. A computer disc 12 cm in diameter can store a whole Encyclopedia Britannia which,in printed volumes, would occupy a complete shelf section.

Furthermore, magnetic and digital media can store information much longer than traditional means. It takes great care to protect books from moisture, fire or human damage and a book in a library serves readers for only a few hundred years. But digital files, easily duplicated and restored, can perhaps last forever.

Finally, visiting a library with multiple media access is much more interesting. Multimedia resources offer readers a dynamic combination of images, sounds and videos.

A reader can actually hear Martin Luther King crying out “I have a dream”,or roam about the world with an interactive atlas.

To sum up, a public library has been turned by modern technology from a place of lending and borrowing books into an interactive center for the spread of human knowledge and experience. Governments can invest more in multimedia facilities by a public library。

2、Many parents complain that computer games have no value to their children’s studies. On their mental and physical development. What is your opinion?

In present age society, computers have been playing an increasing important role in people’s life such as working, studying, entertainment. computer games attract numerous kids, however, in my opinion, these games have little value to them and produce a lot of harmful effects on their physical and mental development.

To begin with, intense radiation produced by an operating computer not only causes failing eyesight but also poses untold hidden health hazards in those young children. Another of the most obvious disadvantages is that these games are highly addictive, compelling children to sit in front of the computer for many straight hours. As a result, they have little time for sports activities and many of them start developing health problems. According to a recent survey, the obesity rate among adolescent aged between13 and19 is soaring in industrialized nations as well as in less developed countries, and one of the contributing factors is the lack of physical exercise.

For one thing, an increasing amount of time spent in playing games means less and less time is devoted to their studies. No wonder that teenagers having this undesirable habit are finding it difficult to meet the deadlines of their school assignment. For another, being accustomed to the fast changing images that are inherent in every computer games, they can hardly concentrate on any serious subject and their attention span is found to be increasingly short. Moreover, teenagers are exposed to sexual and violent scenes featured in many computer games.

To conclude, computer games are indeed valueless and may exert negative impacts on the development of young children. Therefore, it is high time that parent and schools should be alert to the problem, and restrict children’s access to those games, only by which we can keep them on the correct developing way.

3、Topic: some people think computer and the Internet are important in children’s study ,but others think students can learn more effectively in school and with teachers.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In present society,high-tech have been play an increasing vital role in people’s life, even in children’s study . However, this phenomenon has sparked many debates.

A majority of them think more time should be spent with teachers by children. As far as I concerned, while modern technologies are important in assisting a child’s learning, this learning should be guided and directed by the experience of teachers.

A traditional and long-established practice is for children to study and gain knowledge at school, learning skills in various ways taught by traditional methods.

A school is a place where students gather to be educated and learn from each other as well as formal educators. At school, students’development is orchestrated stage by stage ,step-by-step by experienced teachers, and their acquisition of knowledge is guided and backed up in a systematic way.

Admittedly, there is no denying the fact that computer and the Internet are popularly used in the field of education;they can present knowledge in a vivid and novel way. Computer and the Internet can also enable students in enhancing their general understanding of how to solve difficulties in study as well as giving them vital skills in readiness for later life.

To sum up ,I don’t think overemphasizing the use of computers and Internet is wise .Instead, modern technologies should complement more traditional teaching and learning methods. Only when they are not regarded as a replacement for traditional means, can their functions be developed to the utmost。

Topic: Computers are increasingly used in education. In which areas do you think are computers more important and in which areas are teachers more important?

In present age society, computers have been playing an increasingly significant role in many areas of life, such as communication, management and science. People doubt that it is also the same situation for education. In my opinion, at a simple level some subjects may be better taught using computers, but to explain important concepts a human teacher is still indispensable.

There are some subjects in which a computer can be used successfully to teach. Elementary mathematics, elementary language learning and any area which requires a student to memories basic facts through repetition is well suited to computer learning. The computer can be programmed to provide an endless number of simple questions, and as the student answers these questions the facts are learned and reinforced.

However, in the learning and practice of more complex ideas, the computer is not adequate. A computer can evaluate an answer as right or wrong, but it cannot determine why. It cannot find out why a student is making mistakes and then represent important concepts in a different way so the student will understand. It cannot determine at what stage in a mathematics problem the student has made an error; it can only indicate that the final answer is wrong. Tasks involving reasoning cannot be taught by computers, as there are too many variables that a computer can’t deal with successfully. In all these cases, a human teacher seems indispensable in class.

To sum up, computers are not as a tool. Maybe in the future, with the advent of more new technology, human teachers will be replaced. However, they are indispensable now.

Topic:Some people believe that all the children in school are required to learn at least one foreign language. However, others say that those who are not talented do not have to learn. What is your opinion?

In this society with all kinds of development and competition, communication seems to be an vital factor to fulfill one’s life. Thus, some people think it’s necessary for all the students to learn at least one foreign language. While other’s opinion run contrary to theirs. I don’t think a foreign language should be a compulsory course for children to study, for the reason that some of them may not have no interest at all, but not they don’t have the gift to learn.

The study of a foreign language-especially English for children at Grade 1-is now a compulsory requirement at all primary schools in Shanghai. With increased globalization, comes increased cross-cultural contact and because of this, it is important for children to master at least one foreign language at an early age so as to important prepare them for this global society. To understand a foreign language is also an opportunity for children to learn about, and to understand a little about another culture or cultures. Also, it is an opportunity to cultivate students’ talent, develop their ability in learning and boost their potential for further education.

It is irresponsible, and indeed, even harmful, to separate and label students as talented or not in education at such a tender and vulnerable age. Why should the study of a foreign language alone be used as the only yardstick to label students as talented or not in education? It is advisable to help all students to understand that the study of a foreign language will bring benefit to their studies and, in the future, their careers.

To sum up, I think it is necessary to make students understand the importance of another language and interest them to learn. But labeling of students as talented or not in the study of languages is not healthy。

In some countries, secondary schools aim to provide a general education across a wide range of subjects. In others, children focus on a narrow range of subjects related to a particular career. For today’s world, which system is appropriate?

It has always been a controversial issue over whether general education or specific education is deemed more suitable for children. Even though some people argue that the latter alternative could prepare students better for future employment, I firmly believe that schools provide a general education.

It’s an undeniable fact that children would be much better off is they have access to abundant knowledge in a diverse range of fields. this is necessary for them too deal with a multitude of problems they might encounter in they daily life .for instance , simple mathematical calculations would come to the rescue in case of totaling up the bill ; fundamental knowledge of chemical terms would be of huge assistance if you are picking up prescriptions or drugs in a pharmaceutical store ; malfunctioning electrical appliances due to ignorance of basic knowledge of basic knowledge of electricity could be quite unsettling ; current affairs including momentous events happening in spheres of economy or politics around the globe are often considered good conversation-openers in occasions of social mingling or business dinner .

As children grow up, specific education on teaching one or two particular subjects are thought also useful for them. The jobs available nowadays increasingly demand job seekers with one particular skill. It’s sensible to place students on a more focused education once they reach the phase of secondary education.

However, the general education can board individual’s horizons and expand the knowledge, which are common sense of life.

In conclusion, I think general education should be provided more.

Some teachers say students should be organized into groups to study, while others argue that students should be made to study alone

Tell the benefits of each study method. Which one do you think is more effective?

With the development of the society, Students are provided better circumstance to study. Whether they should be divided into groups has sparked much debate. In my opinion, study together is more effective.

Group study is strongly advocated by some because it requires the sharing of ideas amongst group members. During group study, students listen to what they fellow students say debate with them is there is a disagreement. Naturally, their communication skills and critical thinking abilities are greatly enhanced. Moreover, peer pressure can be a positive force which can motivate and challenge the students to do their best. The competitive learning environment also prepares the students for the future reality.

However, study alone also offers some unique benefits to the students. First of all, the individual leaner is kept away from the distracting conversation or unnecessary interruptions in a classroom with many students. Then they can concentrate well and make more efficient use of their time. Also, the individual learner can pace his or her own learning and decide for himself/herself when to start or when to stop. This is especially helpful to those intellectually gifted students those may be bored with regular but simple classroom teaching.

To conclude, although every individuals has his own preferable way to study, group study is suitable to the majority. If the leaner shares what he knows……

In modem society, many people think primary schools should teach science and technology rather than history and geography, which are useless and boring.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

If knowledge must be divided to two groups, there will be science and art. The issue of which is more important has been causing heated debate for many years.

The topic statement clearly plays favorite with sciences while belitting liberal arts, which, in my opinion, is biased and misleading, and may also cause negative influence among the students.

However, those people who advocate that only science and technology subjects should be taught at school are ignorant of. They fail to understand the relationships between different subjects and their mutual overlap; they only see the individual trees in the forest, rather than the forest as a whole. A student can not learn science well without a basic knowledge of human evolution and scientific history. In order to learn technology well, a student must from the very basics of geography that deals with the interaction of the diverse physical, biologic and cultural features of the earth’s surface.

To conclude, anyone who regards one more important than the other is not fully aware of the definition of knowledge. In primary schools, there shouldn’ be any prejudice at all towards a series of subjects offered.

In many countries, good school and medical facilities are available only in cities. Some people think universities graduates who become new teachers and doctors should work in rural areas for a few years. What is your view?

A major gap still exists between educational and medical facilities in the urban and rural areas. Having seen this, some people suggest that new teachers and doctors work in the rural area for a period. I do not think this is practical suggestion.

I would agree that sending new educator and doctors who just graduate from university to the rural area may help them to develop a strong sense of obligation. At least some of they of they will feel it is a pity that the rural residents have suffered from poor teaching and medical service

In addition to that, experience with poor living and working condition can mould fresh graduates’ character and make them tougher than before.

However the problem with sending university graduates to rural areas can be more overwhelming. The first of all when they are forced to work in poor areas many of them will feel very frustrated. Even if they can finally get used to the underdeveloped facilities there, they will find it almost impossible to readapt to the life in cities when they come back. In the second place as they return to cities and have difficulty operating the teaching or medical equipment in cities much pressure will also be left, which is more advanced and harder to use.

In term of their career, these teachers and doctors may think of themselves as complete failure because they may be unable to keep up with their colleagues after spending some time in the rural area.

Therefore, I would argue that individuals’ own choice should be respected when they are asked to work in a place that is entirely different from their own.

Children who grow up in needy families are better prepared to deal with problems in their adult life than children who are brought up in wealthy parents. Do you agree or disagree?

Many needy parents are concerned that poverty will hold children back in their academic and professional development. However, I believe children raised in their families may actually have some advantages that rich parents cannot give their offspring.

Children raised in poor households have stronger self-control because they have learned from their childhood experience that things do not come easily. They have to save up their allowance for expensive things they want to buy so when they become adults, they will be more patient and can wait for months or even years before their needs are satisfied. It seems to me this strong self-discipline will be a significant element of success.

Also, to these kids, the ability to make good use of limited resource is a necessity. They do not waste on parties or buying clothes they only wear once or twice a year so they become better at managing resources an important quality for achieving success when they become adults.

Further, children who grow up in poor families are generally more independent and more hardworking than children brought up by affluent parents. Due to their parents’limited incomes, these children have learned at a very young age to depend on themselves in making toys, cleaning up their rooms and cooking meals for themselves. These experiences make them better at handling difficult situations and solving problems by themselves, which will be very helpful career success in the future.

To conclude, growing up in poor families may be in fact an advantage in terms of children’s development because it helps to cultivate some qualities that adult success requires.

Some people think students should take courses that are decided by the government .others think students should be allowed to focus on subjects that they prefer. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Education has been viewed as one of the most essential element of individual and social development .one topic now under debate is who should make the decisions on what students study.

Academically, students will gain benefits if the curriculum can be devised by the government .learners need foundations before they acquire more advanced knowledge. Without opportunities to learn the basics, students would find it difficult to further their studies or lose interest in their studies altogether.

In terms of meeting the demand of the job market, it would be more efficient if the government plan and arrange the courses for school and universities . Student’

s own selections of courses may be random. Most of them do not really know what the job market expects from them, so some guidance from the government is a necessity.

However, this does not mean that the official curriculum is always productive .Educations should be aware of the fact that individuals have different characters and abilities. If all the students in a certain field take the same courses , their potential may not be fully developed .Accordingly, many talented students may feel frustrated with learning and the nation will not get the talent it needs for its advancement.

My own opinion is that students in primary and secondary schools should take courses that the governments choose for them because they do not really have the capacity to find out courses that will serve their purposes .On the university level, though, students should be allowed to participate in the decision-making process of designing the curriculum as only in this way can their academic potential be fully explored.

Some people think intelligent students should be educated together with other students. Do you agree or disagree?

It is not uncommon for talented students to get admitted to gifted programs. On the other hand, letting talented students take special courses make sense to some extent. They need a more challenging curriculum as they are fast learners and their leaning process requires little repetition of the information that has been taught by the teacher. If they find the curriculum too easy for them to handle, these intelligent children will end up learning little or nothing at all. As a matter of facts, many students who are inattentive in class are intelligent ones. Regular courses simply fail to attract their attention.

What’s more, intelligent students also feel more comfortable if there are separate classes for them. they would feel isolated and become oversensitive if they spent all their class time with their ordinary peers. This is often true because smart children not only have different learning patterns, their communication patterns tend to be different from those of the ordinary students as well.

On the other hand, it should be pointed out that segregating intelligent student from their peers is not without its own downside. Some educators believe such classes will be drained of student leaders and role models. Segregation on the basis of IQ may even send a message to those who take regular courses that their work is not as valued as the intelligent students’, which will lower the average students’ self-esteem.

I would suggest that gifted students spend their class time with their peers. But in addition to that, they should be encouraged to take electives that challenge them mentally.

University students should pay all the cost of their studies because university education benefits individuals more than society as a whole. To what extent do you or disagree with this opinion?

Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to cooperate become more useful adults. Discuss both views and give your own opinion..

Nowadays, purpose of education being changed. There are some people who think believe that competition in children should be made. Others believe that children who are taught to be cooperate as well as become more useful adults. There are and disadvantages for both of the arguments.

To begin with, what is good if a sense of competition in children is made? They can develop themselves more and more as they learn and a lot of to win from the competition.

To prove this, in my county it is popular and common to have a tutor who come to students’house to teach extra piece of study with paying a lot of money. They learn faster than what they learn at school Furthermore, during the vacation, students study at abroad to learn English for a month. If they have experiments such as study abroad, it is one of the greatest plus point to go to the famous well-known high school.

Moreover, there are four big school exam to students’ level of studies. Generally, only the highest 40% can go to the good quality high schools and colleges. Children learn as much as they can, to win the competition to obtain good quality schools. On the other hand, as they are busy to enter the schools and study with their own

tutors, there are problems. They become selfish. They become careless and don’t help others a lot if it is about studies. There will be no cooperation for them. Then , why are there companies for many people to work in? Each of them are clever, however, there are weak parts and strong parts for each person. To cooperate is to improve this part. People talk and listen to what others thinking of and learn. That can also be a great opportunity to learn instead of learning alone with one teacher.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with that children should be taught to cooperate rather than compete. Nobody is perfect. People learn together, work together to help each other .I want parents and teachers to educate children concentrating on cooperation, not compete and ranking them.

Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more school work. To what extend do you agree?

To a large extend, I believe that children are given too much free time.

Free time, in my opinion, refers to time not spent under the direct supervision of a parent, teacher or a person entrusted with the responsibility of bring up the child. Such time is often spent on several things such as watching television, playing with friends, going to parties, doing home work, playing games on their own among others.

Among all of the above, a child could either be influenced by his or her peer group especially when left without attention or be influenced by what he or she watches on TV most of which are those are those not meant to be viewed by the child’s age group.

In my opinion, most of the formative years of a child should be spent doing school work, engaging in recreational activities that would develop the child emotionally and mentally. I believe this strongly because at a young age, a child is quick to grasp most of what is seen or heard.

Using a computer every day can have more negative than positive effects on children. Do you agree or disagree?

In my opinion, young children can be negatively affected by too much time spent on the computer every day.

First of all, sitting in front of a screen for too long can be damaging to both the eyes and the physical posture of a young child, regardless of what they are using the computer for.

In the second place, the type of computer activities that attract children. These are often electronic games that tend to be very intense and rather violent. The player is usually the “hero” of the game and too much exposure can encourage children to be self-centered and too much and insensitive to others.

Last out not least, Even when children use a computer for other purposes, such as getting information or emailing friends, it is no substitute for human interaction. Spending time with other children and sharing experiences is an important part of a child’s development that cannot be provided by a computer.

However, the obvious benefits of computer skill for young children cannot de denied. It is important that children learn at an early age to use the equipment with confidence as they will need these skills throughout their studies and working lives.

The advantage of computer knowledge for young students cannot be denied. Parents must ensure that their children learn other kinds of activity.

p52

Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educational, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree?

In present age society, education are paid more attention than before. Whether children’s leisure activities must be educational has sparked much debate. In my opinion, students need to study as well as relax.

To start with, some parents believe that if their children apply themselves and work hard at school, then they will increase their opportunities for going to higher education and eventually getting a good job. To some extent, they are right, and as access to the best education and best jobs is becoming more competitive, it is true that children have to make the best of their study time when they are young.

However, the parents who do not allow their children sufficient free time for leisure activities outside school hours, are misguided. Such activities are far from being a waste of time for the children simply because they are not academic. It is important to remember that children need to develop skills other than intellectual ones, and the best way to do this is through activities such as sports, games and playing with other kids.

Many children form strong personal relationships with the friends they play with, and without the opportunity to do this, they also could grow up emotionally immature. As a result, parents should have a clear recognition that what is is the most important to their children--- the best opportunity of education and work, or a full development of both mental and physical.

In conclusion, if everything for children to do must have some educational or academic

relevance, they will be readily to be bored with studying, which is the last thing parents want to see.

P61

Some people think rote learning (memorization of information through frequent repetition) is not useful for school today. To what extend do you agree or disagree? For years, educators have been complaining about the adverse effects that the traditional technique of rote memorization has exerted on schooling.

Daycare and kindergarten and lower-elementary students are far better at remembering data than at comprehending concepts and theories. So as a learning process, merely committing information to memory through repetition would be more realistic and more efficient for children in this age group than understanding abstractions at such a young age.

Even for upper-elementary, Secondary school students and university undergraduates whose main task is to develop a more independent mind, rote learning also carries certain benefits. For instance, the grammatical points in language learning, historical and geographic facts as well as physical and chemical equations all require certain amounts of rote memorization before they can be actively applied by the students.

Admittedly, once young students acquire the data they need, they tend to stop there if they are not encouraged to analyze this data.

In my opinion, I believe rote learning still holds certain unique advantages, which mainly have to do with practicality.

However, rote learning can be beneficial when it is not regarded as end in itself, but as the process of laying the groundwork for the subsequent acquisition of conceptual knowledge and the development of critical thinking skills.

?学校的责任与重点 ?Some people say university students should pay for their tuition fees. Some other say the government should pay for the tuition fees. What is your opinion?

Pros: (Government) ?
