Are you the first or the last child in your family, or are you a middle or only child? Some people think it matters where you are born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that the oldest child is smart and strong-willed, and he or she is very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple. Parents have a lot of time for their first child. They give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the fami ly? Middle children don’t get so much attention. So they don’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child then often gets special treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up funny and charming.Do you believe this idea about birth order, too? A r ecent study saw things quite di fferently. The s tudy found that first children believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didn’t mean as much to later children in a family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.。

Who-Whoever作文参考范文:A survey has recently been carried out among the students in our school regarding whether they’d like it should their parents give birth to a second chi ld since the one couple one child policy, which has been in effect for over three decades, came to an end. Opinions vary from individual to individual. Most of the respondents support the idea, saying that it would be amazing to have a brother or sister to keep company and share secrets with. Besides, they believe a second child would bring lots of fun to the family. However, the rest of those interviewed hold the opposite view. To start with, raising one child is alre ady a difficult thing and the parents have to work two times as hard if they have a second child. What’s more, they argue that they have been accustomed to enjoying the whole love from their parents.听力原文:Text 1M: Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Tony Burton from the United States. Let's each buy fou r, shall we?M: I think I will buy ten myself.Text 5W: Why don't you go to bed, Jimmy? You look so tired.M: I have to finish the exercises. It's giving me a hard time.W: They are not as important as sleep at this hou r.Text 6W: The Four Seasons. Can I help you?M: Yes, I' d like to book a room for next week, in the name of Johnson.W: Fine. Could you give me the exact dates, sir?M: Friday the 17th to Sunday the 19th.W: OK. Single or double room, sir?M: Double — my wife will be with me. We'd like a private bathroom, too, if possible. W: I'll have to check that, sir. What time will you be here on Friday?M. Around 7:30 p.m. Can we book a table for dinner?W: Certainly.M: Do you book things like theater tickets and local tours?W: We can do that.M: Thank you.W: Thanks f or calling.Text 7W: Hi, Mark, haven't seen you for ages. It was really nice to get away from the city for a while.M: What did you think of Los Angeles?W: It was all right. I liked it better than I thought I would. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco. M: Cool in San Francisco? That's surprising.W: Yeah, it surprised me a bit, too. We didn't take any sweaters or anything, and they say it's always like that in August. Anyway, I love it. It's probably the most beautiful city in the US — all those hills, the bay, and those charming old Victorian houses. M: So, you like it better than Los Angeles?W: Oh. Yes. Could you explain it in more detail?W: Well, since you have had English Literature, you should also take American Literature.Your transcript indicates that your English background is strong, so I don't think you will have any problem with it.M: How many credits can I get for each course?W: Three credits for each course.M: Frankly speaking, I don't want to fail any classes, so I prefer a somewhat lighter program at the beginning.W: You are quite right. In fact, you must maintain a "B" average to earn your Master's Degree.M: What happens if I get a "C"?W: You will need an "A" to balance it.M: I'd better go slowly but surely.W: That's a good idea.Text 10Most people hate spiders. But few consider that spiders are intelligent, inventive and good frien ds to people. Spiders have highly developed nervous systems. Their brains are capable of remembering, and they are remarkable engineers. They can be found living anywhere from 22,000 feet above sea level, on Mount Qomolangma, to 2,000 feet below the earth's surface, in caves. The silk that spiders spin for their webs has a stretching strength superior to most flexible products made by people. These webs have been known to catch and hold animal s as large as mice. Any insect that gets stuck in the swinging web becomes the spider's next meal. Many scientists feel that without the spider, human life would be in danger. You see, most of a spider's energies are devoted to catching and eating insects. Without spiders, insects would multiply and cover the earth, destroying the vegetation. It has been estimated that each year spiders in England destroy an amount of insects equal in weight to the human population of the country.。

AA sick little gift is being kept alive thanks to her best friend--a dog who carries her oxygen tank on his back. Alida’s faithful dog companion Mr. Gibbs has been specially trained to shepherd the three-year-old, who breathes through a tube most of the time. He follows her closely as she plays in her family’s ten-acre land in Louisville, uses the slide or even rides her bike.Alida was diagnosed(诊断)with neuroendocrine hyperplasia of infancy(NEHI神经内分泌增生)when she was just eight months old. Her rare condition has just eight hundred documented sufferers throughout the world, and causes diseased pieces of the lungs to filter (过滤)oxygen through extra layers(膜)of cells making it hard or almost impossible to breathe. For Alida and her parents, it meant that even a walk in the park was very difficult because oxygen equipment was too heavy for the youngster to be able to carry herself. As parents they wanted to do something to help their daughter survive despite having a tube following her all the time. The couple found out about “service dogs” from a TV program and realized an animal trained to help the blind could be trained to help Alida. They finally found help in the shape of golden doodle—a retriever(寻回犬)crossed with a poodle-dog Mr.Gibbs. Rootie SimmsDWhen should people be made to retire? 55? 65? Should there be a compulsory age limit? Many old people work well into their 70s and 80s, running families, countries or corporations. Other people, however, despite being fit and highly talented, are forced to retire in their fifties or even earlier because of the regulations of a company or the nation. This essay will examine whether people should be allowed to continue working as long as they want or whether they should be encouraged to retire at a particular stage. Some people think there are several arguments for allowing older people to continue working as long as they are able. First of all, older employees have an immense amount of knowledge and experience which can be lost to a business or organization if they are made to retire. A second point is that older employees are often extremely loyal employees and are more willing to carry out company policies than younger less committed staff. However, a more important point is regarding the attitudes in society to old people. To force someone to resign or retire at 60 indicates that the society does not value the input of these people and that effectively their useful life is over. Age is irrelevant to a working life, surely if older employees are told they cannot work after 60, this is age discrimination. That they become old does not necessarily mean they are going to be sick. Old people could be more aware, experienced and committed than some youngsters.Others, however, think that allowing older people to work indefinitely(无限期地)is not a good policy. Age alone is no guarantee of ability. Old people are only ambitious workaholics who are too selfish and self-centered to believe that a younger person could do better. Actually, many younger employees have more experience or skills than older staff, who may have been stuck in one area or unit for most of their working lives. Having compulsory retirement allows new ideas in an organization. In addition, without age limits, however, many people would continue to work purely because they did not have any other plans or roles. A third point of view is that older people should be rewarded by society for their life’s labor by being given generous pensions and the freedom to enjoy their leisure. We now have youngsters who can’t find job s because old people are choosing not to retire. Old people are not retiring because this new generation of “old people” , thinking they will never die due to modern advances in medicine. With many young people unemployed or frustrated in low-level positions, there are often calls to compulsorily retire older workers. However, this can affect the older individual’s freedom and right to work and can deprive(剥夺) society of valuable experience and insights.I feel that giving workers more flexibility and choice over their retirement age will benefit society and the individual.32.What is the purpose of this passage?A. To explain the compulsory age limit.B. To discuss the retirement age.C. To examine people’s working life.D. To introduce a particular stage.33.Which of the following is NOT a reason for allowing old people to continue workingaccording to the passage?A. Their contribution should be valued.B. Their experience should be made use of.C. They can help the youngsters.D. They are loyal employees.34.It can be inferred in the fourth passage that ______.A. The young people have more creative spiritsB. Modern advances in medicine make old people never dieC. Pensions and freedom are not given to the old nowD. Old people believe that a younger person could do better35.The passage is arranged as follows:第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
