The Louvre, in Paris, France, has almost 275,000 works of art.lt contains some of the most famous works of art in the history of the world, including the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

The Louvre was origi nally a fort (a strong build ing used by soldiers for defe nding a place) built by King Philip n sometime around AD 1200.In the 1300s, it became a royal house for Charles V, who had it renovated (翻新).While he did have his own collection of art there, everyth ing disappeared whe n he died.

This impressive building remained empty until 1527, when Francois I decided that he wan ted it for his private palace. Fran cois I was a collector of early Italia n Ren aissa nee art at the time, and already owned the Mona Lisa. However, he would not move into the Louvre until it was completely reno vated and made eve n more sple ndid tha n it had bee n duri ng the rule of Charles V.

Unfortunately, Francois I died before the work was completed, but the work continued un til the death of the head architect.Afterwards, several gen erati ons of French royalty lived in the palace un til Louis XV, the last of the French rulers to call the Louvre home, left in 1682.The Louvre, however, was far from aba ndon ed.For about 30 years after Louis XV' s death in 1715, the Louvre became the home of artists and scholars.lts art collection grew from about 200 pai ntings in 1643 to about

2,500 works of art in 1715.

It was a center of creativity, until the public began to be admitted in 1793.Throughout the French Revolutio n and the years ruled by Napole on I, the art collect ion in the Louvre grew greatly.

Napoleon robbed art from all over the world and added it to the Louvre ' s collection. After Napoleon' s death in 1821, the original owners reclaimed (要求归还)much of the robbed

artwork.Over the last 100 years, art colleges have bee n set up at the Louvre, and it has become one of the largest museums in the world.
