Christmas dinner at Bruce Sweetser and Denali Delmar's house will come in part from their backyard garden. And this retired couple will add another locally grown delicious food to their menu.

“We started harvesting road-killed deer last year,” Bruce explained. His fridge is filled with meat harvested from deer killed in car accidents. Bruce and his wife think it is a right road toward a greener life. Their idea might best be described as locavorism (本土膳食主义). And they believe that eating local food is healthier and better for the environment.

About two years ago, the couple ran across a car accident. The only victim was a deer. And then they found an interesting list by chance.

In Massachusetts, many deer always rush to the motorway and often cause the accidents. So some Massachusetts police departments keep lists of people interested in harvesting meat if a deer isn't damaged too much after a run-in with a car. There are eight people on the Westford Police Department's official list. In addition, animal control officials also call people to harvest the meat.

But Massachusetts law requires that the driver of the car get first right to the deer. If the driver or passengers don't want to get the deer, then police can give the animal to people living in Massachusetts. In other words, they can go to the list.

Bruce and his wife weren't on the Westford list, when they came across that first deer in 2009. But now, they are, and they have harvested three deer as a result, putting the extra meat in the fridge for regular dinners and special occasions like Christmas.

Khushi Ram, who is a 78-year-old Indian man, shares a house with 12 other family members.

Khushi Ram has been married to his wife, Kassmiri for 57 years. “Although we have little money, I have never seen any problem and we are happy to

feed our children with whatever we had,”she says. Kassmiri says her husband has taken whatever job he could do to support his family. She is clearly proud and grateful for this chance to tell the world how happy her family is.

I am impressed with how well the family members get on with each other. Four generations not only share one roof but one bank account. Ram Avtar, a son of Khushi Ram, works for a big company. Khushi Ram's other son runs a coffee shop. His grandson sells auto parts and second-hand cars.

I also notice there always seems to be someone watching grandpa, Khushi Ram's father Hartman, who is blind. Whether he knows it or not, there is always someone just making sure that if he ever does need help, someone will be right there. “In another country, in another life you might be on your own,” Hartman said. “If I were in a bad situation and were driven away like flies from milk, then what kind of a family would that be?”

In America, a lot of parents say the last thing they want is to be a burden on their children. Also, a lot of children don't want to be burdened by their parents. It is too bad that we can't all see like the blind man.

Researchers at Queens University in the United Kingdom are looking for volunteers for a study of diabetic(患糖尿病的)people who own dogs. The goal of the study is to determine scientifically whether or not dogs can notice diabetes in their owners.

The scientists are looking for 100 volunteers. They would also like to see any video footage that the dog owners might already have of the dogs responding to their owners' diabetic states in any way. They are especially interested in footage of the dogs reacting to low blood sugar levels in their owners.

It is believed that dogs literally can smell what is going on in the blood, and sometimes are even able to predict when change of low blood sugar will occur. However, there is very little scientific data to support these claims, so the scientists are hoping to collect data that will confirm these stories.

The videotape will be studied to see just how dogs react when blood sugar levels change. It will also be studied to see how differently dogs react, and whether or not there are similarities in the ways that they react. Another important question is how

reliable dogs are at noticing the change.

Dogs, and other pets, for that matter, are playing a bigger role in health-care systems today. For example, it is well known that dogs reduce people's stress levels. For that reason they are often taken to hospital settings to calm down patients. Dogs have even been able to increase the ability of children to learn how to read. This is done by having the child read to the dog. Children lose their fear of reading out loud because the dogs are very accepting and they are not judgemental.

文章大意:狗真的可以发现人的血糖变化吗?科学家们正在招募志愿者以找到科学依据。

D.comparing the blood sugar levels of different dog owners

答案:D细节理解题。通读第四段内容可知,文章并没有说收集录像是为了比较养狗人的血糖浓度。

65.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

A.Why dogs are used in hospitals.

C.How to use dogs to serve people.

D.Why children like dogs.

答案:B段落主旨题。最后一段的首句“Dogs...are playing a bigger role in health-care systems today.”为最后一段的主题句,故选B。

66.According to the last paragraph, dogs can help children learn how to read because________.

A.dogs can listen to their reading carefully

B.children experience no fear when reading to dogs

C.dogs can play with them when they are reading

D.dogs never bother them when they are reading

答案:B细节理解题。根据最后一段的最后一句“Children lose their fear of reading out loud...”可知对狗朗读时,小孩儿不会害怕,因而可以一直读下去,故选B。

67.What is implied in the passage?

A.People with dogs have higher levels of stress.

B.People with low blood sugar levels are more interested in dogs.

C.People living with dogs have a higher chance of having diabetes.

D.It has not been proved that dogs react to blood sugar levels change.

答案:D推理判断题。根据三段第二句中的“there is very little scientific data to support these claims...”可知,目前还没有科学依据能证明狗可以察觉到人体内血糖浓度的变化。

D

The ancient Maya mastered the art of ceramic (制陶艺术) in a manner which virtually no other culture did.

The Vase of the Seven Gods, made in the area of Naranjo, an ancient city of the Maya civilization in the present-day Petén, Guatemala, shows the fine way Maya handled clay.Like all art of Maya, this vase exhibits highly religious symbols. Furthermore, the artist's name is carved along the bottom of this piece in the form of a small white rabbit.

Ceramics also served as reminders of ancestors and gods. The Flour De Lis Vase is a fine example of this. The water lilies are not only symbols of new birth and life giving qualities, but a constant reminder of purity. On this vase, the water lilies are white, which is undoubtedly a sign of purity. The black background shows the sea, in which the lilies float.

Furthermore, ceramics served practical functions in the Maya culture. Vases, which are quite commonly seen today, were used primarily to hold liquid chocolate and cocoa. Bowls were used to hold various maize (玉米) products. Maize was seen as the imaginary body of the Maize God and the ancient Maya thought that as one ate the

maize or the body of God from the bowl, they actually became God. Plates were merely used for and object.

Finally, Maya used depictions on ceramics to resurrect (复活) family members and honor gods. Because they believe that they would come back to life with their names spoken or their figures drawn, the carvings and paintings on these ceramics played a vital role in Maya spirituality.

Clearly, ceramics served a key function in ancient Maya society from dinner plates to acts of God.

Just in time for National Popcorn Day, a new study shows that people in what's now Peru were eating the snack about 2,000 years earlier than we thought.

Coastal peoples were preparing corn-based foods up to 6,700 years ago, according to analysis of remains of the ancient corn recently discovered at the Paredones and Huaca Prieta archaeological sites on Peru's northern coast.

Previously, evidence of corn as a food about 5,000 years ago had mostly come from what are called microfossils—microscopic remains that do not offer information on the size and shape of the corncobs (玉米棒). But the new-found corn remains revealed a lot, via radiocarbon dating and other tests.

The people who lived in Paredones and Huaca Prieta probably cooked corn in several ways: Wrapping a corncob and resting it on coals, roasting a corncob directly over a flame, or cooking a corncob in an earthen oven. In this culture, corn was a delicious food or a minor supplement to the diet—archaeological evidence shows they did not eat it in large amounts.

Corn was first grown in Mexico about 9,000 years ago from a wild grass called teosinte, according to Piperno, whose research has been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A few thousand years later, corn was brought to South America, where farmers bred the plant crop into hundreds of varieties.

Indeed, what surprised Piperno most about the new research was the diversity of corn—from corncob shapes to kernel (玉米粒)colors discovered in the new-found remains. “Farmers like to experiment and grow cool things,” she said.

As is known to all, with the improvement of people's living standards, cars have become a popular means of transport, bringing great convenience to our life. However, they have also caused some problems such as air pollution and traffic jams.

How can we solve the problems then? As far as I'm concerned, riding bicycles is a good solution. For one thing, bicycles don't need any petrol so they are energy-saving. For another, bicycles are environmentally friendly because they won't give off waste gases. What's more, riding bicycles is a good way to exercise and it is beneficial to our health.

Therefore, let's take the responsibility to build up a low-carbon city by riding bicycles. Come on and join us!

Thank you !

高中英语选修6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism(late 19h to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal, from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris. The Impressionists were the first painters to work outdoors. They were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day. However, because natural light changes so quickly, the Impressionists had to paint quickly. Their paintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At first, many people disliked this style of painting and became very angry about it. They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous. Modern Art(29th century to today) At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modern art". This is because the
