Topics for Speaking Test for Class 1-3, 2010

Semester 2 of 2010-2011

Unit 1

No 1: Mention at least three reasons people get angry. What can we do to control our anger?

1、Being looked down upon, be treated unfairly

2、We may fly into rage when we were betrayed.

3、The ads fooled you into buying low-quality goods . We were made fun of. For example, if you were disabled, someone always talked about it in front of others you would certainly get angry.

In the case of a small offense, it’s better to walk away an d calm down. It is not necessary to explode at a slight provocation. Like the saying that trifles amuse little minds, trifles also annoy little minds only.

When confronted with a gross injustice or a serious crime ,we need to stand up for ourselves and speak our mind .After venting our anger ,we may feel better .If we keep negative feelings to ourselves ,we will probably feel miserable for along time and regret not taking action.

No 2: Why do people get depressed? Is there any connection between depression and bad luck? Can depression be overcome?

Depression is an extremely complex disease.

Depression runs in family. If you have a family history of depression, you are more likely to get depression yourself.

Those who suffer a serious illness and experience a stressful life event tend to feel depressed. Parents divorce, separate, and death can lead to depression. events like moving or changing schools.

Not getting along well with the friends, colleagues and partners may cause depression.

Those who have low self-esteem and a negative outlook are at higher risk of becoming depressed. People who feel that they have no control over negative events are very likely to become depressed.

There seems to be a relationship between depression and bad luck. If your spirits are down and you show it, people might refrain from talking to you. Many good opportunities may slip away as a result. And you might b e left wondering why your luck doesn’t change Whatever its cause, depression is not just a state of mind. It is related to physical changes in the brain, and connected to an imbalance of a type of chemical that carries signals in your brain and nerves. To keep fit, you should avoid depression as possible as you can。To cheer yourself up, you can study or work. Your mood might improve if you keep yourself busy and try to achieve goals. And if staying busy doesn't help, you can just wait for the sadness to go away. It is said that time heals all wounds. Finally, you might find solace in realizing. Your situation is not the worst.

You can also choose to look at the bright side of things because every cloud has a silver lining.

No 3: What makes you happy? Are you happy when others are happy?

I will be happy when I am doing the kind of things I like to do , such as attending Mr. shi ‘s class , playing ball games , reading books , playing chess , playing computer games or so .

With a positive mind you find pleasure almost in everything, like the saying goes attitudes determine your feelings.

The greatest pleasures seem to come from hard-won achievements. For example, if after a lot of hard work, you passed an important examination, finished a big project, or got a promotion, you would feel incredibly happy.

That depends. As to my friends, my family members or people I like, when they were happy I would certainly be happy.

But what if you and your friends all take the same exam, they past ,but only you failed, they were very happy as if laughing at you ,will you still be happy?

Yes I will, but may not be as happy as I passed too. Because I know it is common feeling to be happy, so I will not blame them to be so. But if my enemies were happy, I probably would not be happy. Then what is your opinion?

Human happiness is not limited to one’s good fortune or success. If y ou help someone in need, you’ll probably feel wonderful. This accounts for the success of Project Hope, through which people volunteer time and donate money to help people in need.

No 4: Is there any relationship between reason and emotion? Which plays a bigger role in our lives?

Both reason and emotion are important in our lives. Although they are obviously different from each other, they complement each other just the same. Think about it, it is difficult to isolate reason from emotion .When one is arguing; one is combining logic with feelings. When a speaker is advocating a principle, the feeling he puts into his voice reinforces his argument. When scientists conduct researches, they may choose an area that is interesting to them. Darwin studied science because he had been fascinated by plants and animals since his childhood. However, in some areas either reason or emotion may play a bigger role. Science students may need more logic than emotion to conduct experiments, while art students tend to rely more on their emotion for creativity. Within a family, people usually cherish the emotional ties between family members. Emotion could be more important than reason when falling in love or trusting a member of one's family, whereas reason plays an important role when deciding how to educate a child. Together or separate, reason and emotion play critically important roles in our lives.

Unit 2

No 5:Why do some people want to improve their appearance? In what ways can people improve their appearance?

1、A love of beauty is part of human nature. People like to see beautiful scenery, flowers, and animals. It is not strange that they also want to look at good-looking humans and improve the way they look themselves. So people try what they can to seek beauty.

2、despite the saying that do not judge a person by his appearance , people still tend to like beauties, so in order to be popular among friends and get more friends , people also try to look good.

3、and With improved features, one may find a better job, attract a more desirable spouse, and gain faster promotion. Some occupations attach great importance to appearance. Most actors, anchorpersons, and fashion models can be recognized by their looks.

It is sometimes argued that by looking good, one tends to feel self-confident. With confidence, success is more likely to follow in any undertaking.

Of course good appearance belongs to one’s fortune, you would like to show your fortune to others ,but would you like to demonstrate your weakness? That is why a person with a poor looking would not like to show up in public ,because they lack of confidence.

1、keep a good diet.

2、and I have also heard that taking exercises will also benefit one’s skin.

Yes, besides a good habbit, making up is also a good way.

Some people are still unsatisfied with all these ways , they take further actions , plastic surgery at a great risk. have a face-lift to change their nose or chin, make their single-fold eyelids double folded, and have their skin tightened to smooth out wrink les and crow’s feet. Some even inject botox to remove wrinkles. More drastically, some people may have liposuction to remove fat.

Wow! You have so much knowledge about plastic surgery.

No 6:What is your attitude to plastic surgery What disadvantages are there in plastic surgery?

We should not attempt to change our physical appearance by cosmetic means. Such changes may bring unexpected disasters in the future. Some beautifying methods, if not properly applied, have dangerous side effects. People who receive botox injections to remove wrinkles may eventually ruin their skin. Some surgical operations that are intended to make single-fold eyelids double fold actually make them multi-folded -- not what the patient had in mind.

Unit3

No 7:Discuss some natural disasters and their damages to human beings; can we

overcome natural disasters?

The other day, a terrible earthquake hit Japan and caused a lot of damages, leaving the hit areas with ruins, it is so terrible。An earthquake is a sudden change or movement in the Earth’s crust causing a moving and shaking of the ground.

There are many kinds of natural disasters such as earthquake, flood, drought, forest fire, tsunami, snowstorm blizzard hailstorm hurricane typhoon tornado landslide and volcanic eruption. Can we overcome natural disasters?

Natural disasters are often so powerful that they cause widespread destruction. In the face of

the raging elements, man may seem helpless. However, there is a lot human beings can do to reduce the dangers. For example, although the force of an earthquake is intimidating, we can construct quake-proof buildings, and avoid dangerous quake zones. To prevent flooding, we have built dykes, dams and reservoirs, and many potential floods have been prevented. The dams and reservoirs can also be used to fight a drought by allowing the irrigation of dry fields. As a last resort, we can choose to evacuate a disaster-prone area. In fact, human beings have achieved remarkable success in overcoming natural disasters. What’s your opinion?

Besides that, I think we should have some knowledge about the remedies in face of such sudden disasters. For example, in face of the earthquake, We should prepare emergency kits that include a torch first-aid medicines and bandages. We should move out of dangerous quake zones. When an earthquake strikes while we are in a building we should move outside. If there is no time to leave we can hide under a strong table or bad to avoid being hurt by failing objects. Don’t forget to turn off the electricity and gas to avoid accidents.

Yes , a good knowledge of remedies when confronted with disasters like Japan’s disaster is of great help.

Unit 4

No 8:In terms of recruitment and promotion, what may be the chief considerations: education background or practical ability?

In fact, most bosses will consider both, though they may probably attach more importance to the candidate's ability. After all, a company's profits come directly from the abilities of the entire staff. Many of the qualities of a good worker such as diligence, teamwork, loyalty to the company, and courtesy to customers are gained through on-the-job training rather than from book knowledge. However, one's educational background is not unimportant. If one can enroll in a distinguished university and attain a high GPA, it is likely that one already possesses good qualities like industriousness, intelligence, organizational ability, and a strong will -- qualities that are equally useful in the workplace. But it's also possible that some students from the academic ivory tower are merely bookworms without much capacity for practical work. A boss is unlikely to promote such an employee.

From my perspective, both of them should be taken into consideration. But nowadays, most employers emphasize more on candidates' education background when they decide to hire them. Because they believe that with higher education, those candidates may be superior to those with lower education, and they have those abilities to make great achievements.

No 9: Should managers be strict with or kind to their employees? Give your reasons.

Generally speaking, a manager should show concern for his or her subordinates when they do have difficulties like an acute illness or other unexpected problems. If employees feel sincerely appreciated, they tend to work harder.

Managers should be strict with their employees; otherwise they may find it difficult to keep good discipline in the workplace. For example, some employees may come in late and leave early.

They may call in sick without good reason. Even when they are in the office, they may idle the day away chatting with each other.

Unit 5

No 10: After finishing undergraduate study, would you like to find a job or pursue a postgraduate degree? Give your reasons.

It depends, I think. For me, the severe job marketing, it is wise for us to continue to receive higher education and pursue a postgraduate degree, and it is a remarkable choice at any time. However, as an adult, it is high time I should be independent and try to make a living all by myself.

I should be grateful for my parents for raising me all these years, and be responsible for myself.

Some students prefer to look for a favorable job, through which they can gain useful experience that they cannot get from books. When they move on to a higher level job one day, then, they will already have experience in that field. At work, they can give full play to their practical abilities, and may be promoted to department manager by the time their classmates complete their Master's degree programs. On the other hand, some students are not eager to take up a job and prefer to continue to study towards a Master's degree or even a PhD. And we all know, knowledge is power. Although not everything you learn will be directly applicable at work, knowledge does improve your character overall. In the long run, those who acquire more knowledge will benefit from it.

No 11: Would you like to have an unstable job with high pay or a stable job with lower pay? Give your reasons.

Lower pay I prefer a stable job , low risks low pressure more time to spend as you like with your relatives more peaceful life more opportunity to enjoy every piece of life .

Higher pay the job is more exciting , motivative , spur you to fully use exploit your knowledge force you to learn to deal with all kinds of things , develop your abilities ,with the money you can set up your business and contribute to the world more if used properly.

Unit 6

No 12:What is the re lationship between one’s attitude to life and one’s fate? Does attitude determine fate or the other way round?

Since the world is complex and mysterious, it is not easy to arrive at a definite conclusion. Some scholars, including a British psychologist, suggest that there exists a correlation between one's attitude to life and one's fate. But more research is needed before we can be sure of such a correlation. Moreover, the cause-and-effect relationship has not been clearly identified, and we are uncertain which causes which. In real life we can find counter examples: Some optimistic people are not very lucky, while some pessimistic people are quite lucky. Perhaps we should try to find out which case is more frequent: optimistic people with good luck or optimistic people with bad luck. Judging from my personal observations, the former is more common. I can even supply the reason: Optimistic people have more self-confidence, which facilitates their success in life. A survey involving many people is required to discover what most people think about this issue.

No 13: Do you think success is due more to luck and opportunity or to diligence? Give your reasons.

More diligence Benjamin Franklin said, diligence is the mother of good luck. And opportunity can be created by diligent persons. as long as people are persistent on things they go in for and never give up

Just as the saying goes,”He who seize the right moment, is the right man.” The

world is so complex that it's hard to decide the direction you strive for.

Opportunity is also important. If it comes too late , like we have read in the history zhuzhiwu opportunities can tell you this. Just being industrious is not enough to reach your goals. The most important is how well are you fit with the opportunities. It's a golden ability that one can always notice the golden opportunities.

Unit 7

No 14:What is your attitude to computer and the Internet as sources of entertainment?

With the advent of the computer and the Internet, we can play all kinds of games in the virtual world; we can play chess and cards with people we have never met, even a chess master. We can travel to all parts of the world on the Net. We can send and Moreover, we can make use of the Net as a way of learning.

But we should be careful not to get too much of a good thing. If we sit in front of a computer all day long, there will be many negative effects. Our eyes may get cause disease. Too much sedentary work is bad for our health. We may because physically week and develop a weight problem. Worse still, if we get addicted to the computer, we may neglect human relationships and communication between one another. In the end we would rather talk to a computer than to a human.

No 15: Would you like to go on a tour during the vacation? Which

destinations do you prefer to go to for vacation?

Tibet the Potala palace climb mount Qomolangma broad highland without bounds the widespread blue sky lie on the grassland try riding a horse native customs mysterious land famous。

Unit 8

No 16:Should genetically modified food (GM) be produced and sold? What kinds of benefits and problems are there for human beings with GM food?

The world population has topped 6 billion people and is predicted to double in the next 50 years. Ensuring an adequate food supply for this booming population is going to be a major challenge in the years to come. GM foods promise to meet this need in a number of ways Pest resistance、Disease resistance、Cold tolerance、Drought tolerance/salinity tolerance、Nutrition。

Environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest groups, professional associations and other scientists and government officials have all raised concerns about GM foods, and criticized agribusiness for pursuing profit without concern for potential hazards, and the government for failing to exercise adequate regulatory oversight. It seems that everyone has a strong opinion about GM foods. Even the V atican19 and the Prince of Wales20 have expressed their opinions. Most concerns about GM foods fall into three categories: environmental hazards, human health risks, and economic concerns.

Some people do not like GM crops and food for various reasons. If transgenic crops are planted in a field, they may overrun it and eliminate other crops, for they are especially powerful. Some genetically altered plants and animals can be abnormally large, and people can not be sure that they will not be harmed from eating such foods. Moreover, we do not know whether abnormal genes will be passed on to the next generation. No wonder some people demand that GM food be labeled.

But on the whole people are increasingly accepting GM food. Since we have not solved the problem of hunger in the world, GM food should be introduced to us. As the world population continues to expand, perhaps we have to depend more on GM crops in the future. So far, people eating GM food look just as healthy as those who do not, but scientists should monitor any possible dangers to health.

新视野大学第三版book1英语课后翻译原文及答案 Unit 1 原文: Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who is credited with laying the fundamentals (基础) of modern Western philosophy. He is a mysterious figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his most famous student Plato.Socrates has become well known for his contribution to the field of ethics. His method of teaching, known as the Socratic Method, by asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to explain ideas remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions. He also made important and lasting contributions to the field of epistemology (认识论) and logic, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains a strong foundation for Western philosophy that followed.Socrates was the most colorful figure in the history of ancient philosophy. His fame was widespread in his own time, and his name soon became a household word although he constructed no philosophical system, established no school, and founded no sect (宗派). Confucius was a great thinker and educator in Chinese history. Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.doczj.com/doc/2d10535732.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
