Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Capability in NX 8.5 New operation for volume based floor & wall milling IPW aware, next generation face milling Dedicated controls to define area volume that needs machining Reworked zig pattern Preview machining region before generating tool path Trim Boundary support Part conversion of pre NX 8.5 face milling operations to the new operation Customer value Reduce programming time for prismatic parts Explicit controls for optimal tool path Ease of use

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
What’s in the box for NX 8.5 / Workflow Overview Create a Workpiece group Define Part Geometry (mandatory) Use one of the Blank Geometry options to define Blank If no Blank is available or cannot be defined, use Floor or Wall Blank Thickness later in the operation

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Pattern availability All NX 7.5 face milling cut patterns are available except for ‘Mixed’ Zig & Zig Zag patterns are reworked Reworking other patterns is planned for later releases

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling Profile Pattern
Profile pattern can be activated for testing in ip13 by setting UGII_CAM_ALLOW_PROFILE_IN_FLOORMILL=1 Profile pattern provides the same functionality as in previous versions and allows ‘No Floor’ use cases, works with IPW or Floor / Wall Blank Thickness and additional passes are trimmed to Blank/IPW If above ENV is set, pre NX8.5 Face Milling operations with profile pattern will be migrated to the new operation with profile pattern

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling Floor or Wall Containment
Cut Region Containment
Cut Region Containment
Floor or Walls
Floors
Both options support Floor & Wall selection Limits the resulting cut region to the floor(s) and uses the walls only for trimming Results in a true 2.5 D containment Cut Region Containment Walls The walls are taken into account at each cut level and the containment follows the geometry Exact Positioning (See next slides)

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling Floor Containment
Cut Region Containment Floors (1/5)
Floors & Exact Positioning Off
When to use Cut Region Containment
For all ‘floor focused’ use cases where floors are the main drivers to build the regions Where straight up trimming is required and tapered walls or floor fillets can be ignored Floors or walls are selected and the cut region should be trimmed to selected or ‘implied’ floor(s) Walls are optional and are only used for trimming the floor region If only walls are selected, the floor is implied

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (2/5)
Floors & Exact Positioning Off
When to use Cut Region Containment
If a tool with corner radius is used, same straight up trimming and results as with previous slide For all use cases where straight up trimming is required and tapered walls or floor fillets can be ignored

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (3/5) Floors & Exact Positioning Off
Typical Use Cases for Cut Region Containment
Facing of one or more planar floors w/o any wall involvement

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (4/5) Floors & Exact Positioning Off
Typical Use Cases for Cut Region Containment
Milling of one or more planar floors connected to walls, walls are only used for trimming

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (5/5) Floors & Exact Positioning Off
Typical Use Cases for Cut Region Containment
Cutting of no-floor use cases where the walls are only used for straight up trimming

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (1/2)
Floors & Exact Positioning On?
When to use Cut Region Containment
Same straight up trimming as in previous 2 slides except that: The floor fillet will be considered as part of the floor and allows cutting these without using Cut Region Containment Walls If tool corner radius > floor fillet it leaves material in the fillet area If tool corner radius < floor fillet it leaves material on the wall and the fillet area

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Floors (2/2) Floors & Exact Positioning On
Typical Use Cases for Cut Region Containment A tool has a corner radius and: a floor fillet is present and needs to be cut
a floor fillet is present and needs to be cut but not the adjacent tapered wall a floor fillet is present and needs to be cut and floor areas needs to be trimmed by walls
Page 19

Volume Based 2.5 D Milling
Cut Region Containment Walls (1/2) Walls & Exact Positioning Off
When to use Cut Region Containment
Floors and tapered walls are selected, a tool with corner radius is used and the tool should follow the wall on all levels but not exactly positioning the corner radius (treat as if tool is a cylinder) This leaves stock on the walls and the floor fillet (if available)
