I’ve been asked a million times why I’ve chosen to put up with a ll the inconvenience of working the road all these years when I could have easily written songs for a living, and enjoyed a peaceful and comfortable existence. My reply is:Nobody applauds when you write a song.,

What else would cause a person to pack his belongings and ride away from his family in order to lead such a nomadic (流浪的) existence? I mean, entertainers don’t cure cancer or anything.

I once rode all night and half a day through a snowstorm only to arrive in a town where we were booked to perform to find our concert had been canceled because of the weather.A handful of people hadn’t heard the news, however, and had managed somehow to make their way to the concert hall.

We were cold, tired and hungry. But there was something in the eyes of those few fans who had shown up that told us how badly they wanted to hear the music they knew we could play if only we would. There was certainly no place else for us to go. The entire town was held prisoner by the storm. Why not drink some coffee and pick a little country music? When our show was over,an elderly lady approached the stage.“You don’t know how much this evening has meant to me,” she said.“Thank you for playing and singing for such a small crowd.Today is the first time I’ve smiled since my husband died.Your music has helped me to forget my problems for a while.”

Okay,so entertainers don’t cure cancer. But maybe, every once in a while, we cure some other things that are almost as important.

For 75 years, three words have influenced the lives of many young Brits. They are:mirror, signal, manoeuvre(移动).

These are the processes all drivers should perform.Learners hoping to pass their driving test need to prove that they understand the importance of these actions before they can

throw out their L-plates and head for the highway. In Britain,L-plates ale signs with a red “L” on them which you attach to a car to warm other drivers that you are a learner. This summer the British driving test celebrates its seventy-fifth birthday. It’s often described as one of the most frightening tests we face.

It is a painful experience that doesn’t come very cheap nowadays.Taking the test in 1935 cost just 37. 5 pence;now candidates can expect to pay £93.

The test is also harder than ever.In 1935,the pass rate was 63%; now it’s 43%.In recent years, the DSA—the organization that oversees (监督) the driving test —has looked for ways to assess different aspects of what makes a good driver

Now the DSA has announced that candidates will drive for ten minutes without detailed instructions from the examiner.DSA’S chief driving examiner Trevor Wedge said the aim was to measure a candidate’s ability to drive safely while making decisions independently. However, drivers will not be punished for getting lost.“Candidates won’t be failed for going off route,” Mr. Wedge said.

No doubt there will still be complaints. The BBC has learnt that in 2009 there were l,889 complaints about examiners,of which just 51 were supported.

Complaints that were rejected included ‘‘Candidate crashed during test—claims examiner distracted(注意力不集中的)”and “Candidate says examiner took her on busy roads during rush hour, which was unfair".

Someone else seemingly failed to understand the nature of an emergency stop when the complaint was filed that an emergency stop was conducted without warning.

63.What do we know about L-plates?

A.Brits with L-plates can’t drive on highways.

B.It’s difficult for people to get L-plates.

C.It takes a long time to get L-plates.

D.Most L-plates are black in color.

A.teach how to drive

B.are mostly policemen

C.punish candidates who get lost

D.assess the performance of candidates

65.We can learn from the passage that .

A.examiners don’t take candidates on busy roads

B.the pass rate of the driving test in Britain is 63%

C.the first British driving test took place in the 1920s

D.only a small number of complaints about examiners were supported

66.What does the author want to tell us most ?

A.People are afraid of taking tests.

B.It’s not eas y to get a driving license in Britain.

C.People must be careful while driving in Britain.

D.Complaints about the DSA examiners are increasing.

Some schools are now forbidding or restricting(限制) bake sales in an effort to fight a rise in obesity among kids.

In February, the New York City Board of Education ordered that only fruits, vegetables, and approved packaged foods be sold at schools. Many students and parents objected to the restrictions on bake sales , which have long been a way to raise money for schools and community causes , including athletic events and Haitian earthquake relief.New York City finally compromised, allowing each school to hold one bake sale a month. But California and school districts in other states still limit bake sales.Should all schools forbid bake sales?

Childhood obesity has been a growing problem for decades. The number of obese school-age children in the U.S.has increased by three times in the past 20 years.According to Eric Goldstein, the head of food services for New York City schools.40 percent of the city’s 1.1 million pupils are obese.

“We have a big problem in the city, state, and the country with obesity,”Goldstein said.“During the school day, we have to focus on what is healthy for the mind and the body.”

A. J. Juarez, a community organizer for the Massachusetts Public Health Association, agrees.Restricting the kinds of food sold in schools is ‘‘about teaching kids g ood habits,”he said.

Nutrition experts believe schools are supposed to be a place where teachers and students set up a model environment, and the last thing kids need is an extra source of pointless calories.

But many parents and students dissented.“It’s not fair. Bake sales have always been a positive way to raise money for school programs, and to make that against the rules is not appropriate,” said a parent.

“I don’t think they should forbid bake sales,’’Reese Butler,12,told The New York Times.A sixth-grader from Wrightstown,New Jersey,he reasoned that,“Money raised by selling cookies is sometimes used for field trips and for community causes, including Haitian earthquake relief.”

For Alyssa Howell,11,a fifth-grader in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the issue of choosing what to eat is about freedom.“It is the child’s decision to make the right choice.”she said.

67.What is the passage mainly about?

A.How to fight childhood obesity.

B.How to raise money for school programs.

C.Whether to eat food with higher calories.

D.Whether to forbid bake sales at schools.

68.How many New York City pupils are overweight?

A.About 1,100,000. B.About 110,000

C.About 440,000. D.About 4,400,000

69.What is nutrition expert’s attitude toward restricting bake sales ?

A.Opposed B.Positive

C.Disappointed D.Doubtful

70.The underlined word “dissented ”in the passage can best be replaced by .
