专题四:数词

数词是用来表示数目多少或顺序先后的词,分为基数词和序数词两种。基数词是用来表示数目的,序数词是用来表示顺序的。

一、数词在句子中的作用:

基数词与序数词的用法基本相同,在句中均可作主语、表语、定语和宾语,此外,基数词还可作同位语。

①作主语:five and six is eleven. 五加六等于十一。

②作表语:I am thirty years old. 我30岁了。

③作定语:There are fifty-six peoples in China.中国有56个民族。

④作宾语:Have you found any books there? Yes, I have found two.

在那儿你已找到书了吗?是的,我已找到两本。

⑤作同位语:We two come from China.我们俩来自中国。

二、数词的构成及用法:

一)基数词的构成及用法:

2.基数词的构成:

①1-12单独记:one,two,three,four,five,six,seven,eight,nine,ten,eleven,twelve

②13-19词尾为teen:thirteen,fourteen,fifteen,sixteen,seventeen,eighteen,nineteen

③20,30,40等逢十词尾为ty: twenty,thirty,forty等。

④21-99在十位数和个位数之间加连字符构成:21twenty-one ,55fifty-five, 99ninety-nine

⑤101-999先说几百,再加and,再加末尾两位数:101one hundred and one, 239two hundred and

thirty-nine, 999nine hundred and ninety-nine ⑥1000以上的数词,先从后向前数,每三位用一个“空格或逗号”隔开。第一个“空格或逗号”为thousand;第二个“空格或逗号”为million;第三个“空格或逗号”为billion。然后一节一节用几百几十几的方法表示。

3.基数词的位置:

①位于another,all之后。

Can you give me another two days?你能再给我两天吗?

The boy lost all the four pens yesterday.昨天那个男孩四支钢笔全丢了。

②位于such和more之前。

I can finish reading two such books in a day. 一天里我能读完这样的两本书。

We need to plant ten more trees.我们还需要种十棵树。

③可置于last,next,other之前或之后。

His last two books are written in English.=His two last books are written in English.他的后两本书是用英语写的。

二)序数词的构成及用法:

一二三要单独记,one—first, two—second, three—third;

th要从四加起,fourth,sixth;

eight少个t, 即eighth;

nne去掉e,即ninth;

five—fifth, twelve—twelfth;

ty变成tie,twenty—twentieth;

若问“几十几”或“几百几”,只变个位记心里。

3.序数词的用法:

①一般情况下,序数词前要加定冠词the。

The first lesson is very easy. 第一课是很容易的。

Monday is the second day of a week.周一是每周的第二天。

②序数词前要加定冠词the,表示“第几”;但也可以在前面加不定冠词,意为“又一,再一”。The second book is new.第二本书是新的。

Try a second time and you’ll succeed.再试一次,你就会成功的。

I want a third cake because the second one is too small.我想再来一块蛋糕,因为第二块是相当小的。

三、数词的一些常见表达法与读法:

一)分数、百分数、小数的表示法:

1.分数:

分数构成的总原则是:分子用基数词,分母用序数词。分子大于1时,表示分子的基数词用单数,表分母的序数词用复数。两者之间可用连字符号相连,也可不用。分子与分母都较大时,一般用over。带分数的表示“基数词+and+分子基数词+分母序数词”。

1/3 one-third 2/5 two fifths 22/9 twenty-two over nine 33/50 thirty-three over fifty

但:1/2 a/one half 1/4 a/one quarter或a/one fourth 3/4 three quarters或three fourths 2.百分数:

百分数由“基数词+﹪”构成,百分号﹪读作percent或per cent,无复数形式。

10﹪ten percent 35﹪thirty-fivepercent 0.4﹪zero point four percent

3.小数:

小数点读作point,小数点前按基数词读,小数点后则将数字依次读出。

0.12 zero/o point one two 23.456 twenty-three point four five six

二)算式表达法:

加法用plus或and,减法用minus,乘法用times或multipied by,除法用divided by表示,等号用is, makes, equals或is equal to .

2+3=5 Two plus three is five.

Two and three imakes five.

7-2=5 Seven minus two equals five.

Two from/out of seven leaves five.

2×3=6 Two times three is six.

Two multipied by three is equal to six.

16÷2=8 Sixteen divided by two is eight.

Two into sixteen equals eight.

三)倍数的表达法:

倍数中的“一倍”用once;“两倍”用twice或double;三倍或三倍以上用“基数词+times‖。

1.A+be+倍数+形容词比较级+than+B “A比B…多少倍。”

This wire is three times longer than that one. 这根电线比那根长三倍。

2.A+be+倍数+as+形容词原形+as+B ―A是B的多少倍…。‖

This wire is four times as long as that one. 这根电线是那根的四倍长。

3. A+be+倍数+the+名词+of+B “A是B的多少倍…”

这类名词有:size(大小),length(长度),weight(重量),height(高度),width(宽度),depth(深度),price(价格)等。

This wire is four times the length of that one. 这根电线是那根的四倍长。

4. A+be+倍数+what+B从句―A是B的多少倍…。‖

The output of cars in 1990 was three times what it was in 1988.

1990年汽车的产量是1988年的三倍。

四)数的增减表达法:

英语中常用来表示净增或净减的结构有:

1.A+be+形容词比较级+than+B+by+倍数“A比B…多少倍。”

This wire is longer than that one by three times. 这根电线比那根长三倍。

2.动词+by+分数/百分数/数字“增加/减少了多少。”

表示数增加的动词有increase,go up,raise,rise,grow等;表示数减少的动词有:reduce,go down,fall,decrease等。

The cost increased by 20 percent. 成本增加了20﹪。

Production fell by one-third. 产量下降了三分之一。

3.分数/百分数+less than “少/下降了…”

The steel output this year is 10 percent less than that in 2009.

今年钢的产量比2009年下降了10﹪。

五)约数的表达法:

1.“大约”用about,some,around,nearly,or so(左右),more or less(或多或少)等。

He is about 20 years old. 他大约20岁了。

The story happened around ten years ago.这个故事大约发生在10年前。

2.“多于,超过“用over,above,more than,等。

He is over 30 years old.他30多岁了。

All children above seven must go to school. 7岁以上的所有儿童都必须上学。

3.“少于,不超过‖用less than,below,under,or less等。

He is less than 30 years old.他不到30岁。

The temperature is below zero.温度在零度以下。

4.“…或…以上”用…or more表示。

This box weighs two tons or more.这箱子重两吨或两吨以上。

5. “…或…以下”用…or less表示。

This box weighs two tons or less.这箱子重两吨或两吨以下。

六)编号的表达法:

1.基数词和序数词都可以用于事物的编号,但表现的形式不同。

第一课Lesson One或the first lesson

第十页Page ten或the tenth page

第二次世界大战World WarⅡ或the Second World War

2.若数字过长,则应避免使用序数词。

3.a/the number(No.)+基数词+名词

一路公共汽车a No.1 bus

第18号房间the No.18 room

4. 国王等的头衔通常用罗马数字表示。

但口语中也可为:Charles the Fifth

七)日期和时刻的表达法:

1.日期的表达法:

①英语中“年月日”可以写成“日月年或月日年”。“年、月”前用in;“日”前用on,“日”用基数词或序数词表示皆可,但读作序数词。例如:

2010年10月1日写作:1 October,2010 或October 1st,2010

读作:the first of October,2010或October the first,2010

在2010年10月in October,2010

在2010年10月1日on 1 October,2010

②表示年代的阿拉伯数字+s/’s,或用逢十的基数词复数表示年代;用early,mid-,late分别表示某一年代的初期、中期和末期。

在二十世纪八十年代in the 1980s/’s

在三十年代in the thirties

在四十年代初期in the early forties

③几种年份的读法:

1900nineteen hundred

1901nineteen one或nineteen o one或nineteen hundred and one

2.时刻的表达法:

①直接表达法:即按顺序先读小时再读分钟。

6:00 six o’clock

7:20 seven twenty

8:05 eight o five

9:45 nine forty-five

②间接表达法:分钟数≤30分钟时,用“分钟数+past+整点”;分钟数>30分钟时,用“60-分钟数+to+下一个整点”。半小时用half表示,一刻钟用quarter表示。

1:20 twenty past one

2:15 a quarter past two

3:30 half past three

4:40 twenty to five

5:45 a quarter to six

八)年龄的表达法:

表示“在某人几十岁”时,用“in one’s+基数词的复数”。

Tom left his hometown in his thirties. 汤姆在30几岁时离开了他的家乡。

其他:

He is a student of nineteen. 他是一个19岁的学生。

He is a student aged nineteen. 他是一个19岁的学生。

He died at the age of 80. 他80岁时去世了。

九)度量衡的表达法:

1.长宽高的表达法:

This rope is 40 centimeters long

This rope is 40 centimeters in length. 这根绳子长40厘米。

This rope has a length of 40 centimeters

This street is 5 meters wide.

This street is 5 meters in width. 这条大街宽5米。

This street has a width of 5 meters.

He is six feet tall.

他身高六英尺。

He is six feet in height.

2.面积的表达法:

The town covers an area of 10 square miles. 小镇占地10平方英里。

The room is five meters by five meters. 这个房间是5米见方。

3.重量的表达法:

I’m fifty kilos.我体重50公斤。

This box weighs two tons. 这箱子重两吨。

4.温度的表达法:

Water boils at 100 degrees Centigrade. 水在100度沸腾。

Water freezes at 0 degree Centigrade. 水的冰点是0度。

十)数词的一些特殊用法:

1.英语中的“每隔”表达法为“every+基数词+名词复数=every+序数词+名词单数”。every three days=every third day 每三天/每隔两天

every four years=every fourth year 每四年/每隔三年

另外:every other+名词单数“每隔一…”; every few+名词复数“每隔几…”

every other day 每隔一天 every few meters 每隔几米

2.hundred,thousand,million,billion的用法:与具体的数词one,two或several,some,many等连用时,要用单数形式;与of连用时,要用复数形式,但前面不能再加数词。

one hundred pepople 100人three million trees 三百万棵树

hundreds of students 成百上千的学生thousands of stars 成千上万的星星

3.dozen与score的用法:

dozen,score与数词或many,several等连用时,其后不加s;dozen修饰名词时,其后不加of,但若修饰的名词前有限定词the,these,those,his,my,their等或修饰的词为人称代词时,其后要加of;score修饰名词或人称代词时,其后要加of。

a dozen eggs 一打鸡蛋two dozen books 两打书

three dozen of the apples 三打苹果four dozen of them 他们中的四打

a score of eggs 二十枚鸡蛋two score of books 四十本书

three score of them 他们中的六十

但:dozens of “许多的,大量的”,scores of“许多的,大量的”修饰可数名词的复数。dozens of eggs 许多鸡蛋scores of students 许多学生

注1:常见的含有基数词的习惯表达法有:

one at a time 一次一个one by one 一个接着一个

one and the same 完全一回事one in a thousand 千里挑一的

ten to one 很可能 a hundred and one 许多

the last but one 倒数第二cut in two 切成两半

by twos 成双成对地by twos and threes 三三两两地

at sixes and sevens 七嘴八舌 a thousand thanks 万分感谢

by the dozen 按打计in tens 十个十个地

in five hundreds 五百五百地one in/out of ten 十分之一

注2:常见的含有基数词的习惯表达法有:

at first 起初at first sight 乍一看

first of all 首先from first to last 自始至终

for the first time 第一次in the first place 第一名

second to none 首屈一指的on second thoughts 再考虑

second nature 第二天性second best 仅次于最好的

tenth-rate 最劣等的at the eleventh hour 在最后的时刻
