After reading each passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked with A., B., C. and D. You should choose the most appropriate answer and write the letter in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough practice. The position is exactly the same as that of two people, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while theother sits in a chair or a car all day.If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means—practice.Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a notebook. They have to remember dates, times, prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is always being exercised. So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble: practise remembering.16. The first paragraph is intended to tell us that ________.A .everybody knows that memory works in the same way as arms or legsB. it is a fact that some people do not use their arms or legsC. to have a good memory, one has to exercise it regularlyD. to keep fit, one should not sit in a chair or a car all day17. In the author’s opinion, a poor memory may result from ________.A. unlucky fortuneB. weak arms and legsC. insufficient educationD. lack of remembering practice18. The author seems to suggest that we should ________.A. complain about nothing but our healthB. play tennis to exercise our arms and legsC. blame ourselves rather than our parents for a poor memoryD. learn from those who cannot read or write for a better memory19. The author comes to the conclusion that ________.A. memory can be improved by practising itB. the poorer one is, the better memory he hasC. if you want a good memory, do not read or write anythingD. the poor and humble people may help you remember things20. The most appropriate title for the passage would be ________.A. Poor and Good MemoryB. Your Arms, Legs and BrainC. How to Improve Your MemoryD. Learn from the Poor and HumbleQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. How Toxic(中毒的)Are You?Take this test and find outYes No□□1. But higher productivity may lead to fewer jobs.Early in the postwar era, analysts were worried that automation would take over manufacturing, throwing everyone out of work. That fear went unrealized for a generation, in part because robots and computers weren’t good at much. Today, near-automated manufacturing is becoming a reality. Newly built factories often require only a small part of the work force in the plants. Office technology, meanwhile, now allows a few to do what once required a large group of people. There may come a point when the gains from higher productivity pale before the job losses. But even if that point does not come, rapid technological change is causing anxiety about future employment: anxiety that makes it hard to appreciate and enjoy what productivity creates.Prosperity brings many other mixed blessings. Living standards keep rising, but so do cases of depression. Agricultural yields continue rising, yet that means fewer family farms are needed. Biotechnology may allow us to live longer, but may leave us dependent on costly synthetic drugs. There are many similar examples. Increasingly, western life suffers from the paradoxes (自相矛盾) of progress. Material circumstances keep improving, yet our quality of life may be no better as a result—especially in those cases, like food, where enough becomes too much.26. The fear that automation would make people out of work turned out to be ________.A. impossibleB. reasonableC. practicalD. unnecessary27. In the third paragraph the word “pale” most probably means ________.A. result from technological changesB. decrease in relative importanceC. result in poor health.D. increase in anxiety28. We can find in the passage that it is hard to enjoy higher production because ________.A. people are afraid of automation.B. technology may change even more rapidlyC. computers are not good at some workD. unemployment may emerge on a large scale29. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A. material benefits are what we needB. prosperity is just one side of the same coinC. the quality of life may be worse than beforeD. western people are free from the paradoxes of progress30. The author implies in the passage that ________.A. while life gets better, people feel worseB. life is generally not as good as it used to beC. people should return to the past to feel betterD. our quality of life has turned worse before it turns betterQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passages. In today’s competitive job market, students are looking for degrees outside their home countries to position themselves as global managers fluent in international practices. Among them is Simon Tindall, an American who turned down a scholarship to Georgetown University in Washington in favor of Cambridge.Foreign students make up an average 70 percent to 80 percent of non-U.S. MBA programs. In contrast, the Wharton School, at the University of Pennsylvania, reports one of the highest percentages of international students for an American program at 39 percent, a figure that includes U.S. permanent residents. While the tough recruiting climate for graduates entering the U. S. job market is a factor in the decrease, another pressure point seems to be restrictions on visas for travel, education and work in the States after the war in Iraq, SARS in Asia and political changes related to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.One Chinese student said she had been offered a full scholarship to attend the University of Michigan’s MBA progr am in 2002 but that a visa request had been denied two years in a row. Another could not obtain a visa to enroll at the University of California at Los Angeles. Many students are also being attracted by the affordability of international programs, especia lly in relation to costs in the United States. Most MBA programs outside the United States can be completed in one year rather than two, representing a huge saving in both tuition and opportunity costs.Britain has an advantage over other international programs in both ranking and brand value. Better rankings attract better students, who in turn improve the rankings. “The applications we received this year were on average of a much higher quality than last year,” said Gary, the admission director at Cambri dge. “The increase in applications enables us to be more selective. Year to year, we’re looking to increase the quality of the student body, which in turn strengthens competition for the whole program. ”31. Simon Tindall went to Cambridge to study for an MBA program because ________.A. Cambridge offered him a full scholarshipB. he was denied a scholarship by Georgetown UniversityC. there was a lower percentage of foreign students in BritainD. international experience would benefit him in employment32. Compared with students taking U. S. programs, those doing an MBA in Britain have ________.A. a wider variety of nationalitiesB. a small number of nationalitiesC. a hard time selecting a favorite schoolD. a better opportunity getting a full scholarship33. Some Chinese students gave up their choices of studying in the States because ________.A. their visa requests were deniedB. they found it hard to hunt a jobC. they lacked qualifications for the programD. the scholarship couldn’t cover their expenses34. The fifth paragraph tells us that most MBA programs outside the States ________.A. last longerB. are cost-efficientC. lack global attractionD. are hard to complete35. The increase in applications for MBA in Britain is due to ________ of the universities.A. the locationsB. the reputationC. the academic levelsD. the tuitions and facilitiesPart III ClozeDirections: There is a passage in this part with10 blanks in it. The biggest difference between people who succeed and those who don't is not usually talent but persistence. On my way to work one morning, I met Rudy Ruettiger, who is now a motivational speaker. He has grown up in Joliet, listening to stories about Notre Dame and dreaming of one day playing football there. Friends told him he wasn't a good enough student to be admitted. So he gave up his dream and went to work in a power plant. Then a friend was killed in an accident at work. Shocked, Rudy suddenly realized that life is too short not to pursue your dreams. In 1972, at the age of 23, he enrolled at Holy Cross Junior Collegein South Bend, Ind. He got good enough grades to transfer to Notre Dame, where he finally made the football team as a member of the “scout team”, the players who help the team prepare for games. Rudy was living his dream, almost. But he wasn't allowed to suit up for the games themselves. The next year, after Rudy requested it, the coach told Rudy he could put on his uniform for the season's final game. And there he sat, on the Notre Dame bench during the game. A student started shouting, “We want Rudy!” Soon others joined in. Finally, at the age of 27, with 27 seconds left to play, RudyRuettiger was sent onto the field-and made the final tackle (阻截). So his team won the game. When I met Rudy 17 year later, it was in the parking lot outside Notre Dame stadium (体育场), where a camera crew was filming scenes for Rudy, a motion picture about his life. His story illustrates that there is no limit to where your dreams can take you.21. According to the passage, Rudy once gave up his dream of playing football for Notre Dame because .A. his friend was killed thereB. his foot was injured in an accidentC. he lacked confidence in himselfD. he failed in the entrance examination23. Rudy succeeded in developing his abilityPassage TwoQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.NASA, the U.S. space agency, believes there's a good chance thatwe're not alone in the universe. Last fall, NASA began a new project called the High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS). Its aim: to find evidence of life in one of the billions of galaxies in the universe. The search for intelligent life on other planets isn't new. It began almost 100 years ago. That's when scientists built a huge transmitter to send radio waves into space. Scientists thought smart beings on other planets might pick up the signals.Scientists also have sent a message about humans and our solar systemto a nearby constellation (星座). But because the constellation is25,000 light years away, a return message wouldn't reach Earth for50,000 years! So don't wait up for an answer. So far, no extraterrestrial (地球外的) beings that we know of have returned our “calls.” But according to Dr. Jill Tarter, an HRMS scientist, we haven't exactly had our ears wide open. “Now, however,” says Dr. Tarter, “we've built the tools we need to listen well.”Last October, Dr. Tarter switched on the largest radio receiver inthe world. It's an enormous metal bowl stretching 1,000 feet across a valley in Puerto Rico.Meanwhile, another NASA scientist turned on a huge radio receiver in California's Mojave Desert. NASA hopes these big dishes-and others around the world-will pick up radio signals from new world.Dr. Frank Drake has been searching for life in outer space for years. He explains the HRMS project this way: To listen to your radio, you move the tuner on the dial until the channels come in loud and clear: Now imagine radio receivers that scan our galaxy “listening” to 14 million channels every second. That's what NASA's radio receivers in Puerto Rico and California are doing. But that's not all. Powerful computers hooked to the receiversexamine every signal carefully. The computers try to match thesignals to ones that scientists already recognize, such as human-made signals. If they can't, Drake and Tarter check on them. “It could prove there is radio technology elsewhere in the universe,” says Dr. Tarter. “And that would mean we're not alone.” 26、NASA scientists started a new project in order to _______.A、 discover life in other galaxiesB、 send human beings into spaceC、 find evidence of a new galaxyD、 confirm the number of galaxies27、According to Dr.Jill Tarter ,the reason why we haven't receivedany return any return messages from outer space is that_______.A、 our ears are not sharp enough to hear themB、 our equipment hasn't been good enoughC、 it takes millions of yuars for them to reach usD、 it takes quite a long time to send them28、Dr.Jill Tarter compares the large receiver to _______.A、 the human earB、 the universeC、 a metal bowlD、 a huge dish29、According to Dr.Frank Drake ,NASA's radio receivers in PuertoRico and California are _______.A、 trying to check on every channel carefullyB、 moving the tuner on the dial for clear channelsC、 scanning the universe for possible signalsD、 picking up radio signals from new world30、The best title of this passage is ________.A、 Signals from the SpaceB、 The Invention of New Radio ReceiversC、 The Intelligent Life in Outer SpaceD、 NASA Listens for Space NeighborsPassage ThreeQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.Even a careful motorist(开汽车的人) may commit a motoring offence (违法).In this case, he will appear in a police court .This is a court ruled by a judge without a jury (陪审团).A judge has powers to pass sentence for relatively minor offences only ;serious charges are dealt with by a judge and a jury.In certain cases, a motoring offender may choose to go before a judge and a jury ,instead of appearing before just a judge .A court is also used for the conduct of preliminary investigations to dedermine whether or not a motoring offender shall appear for trial in a higher court. When his case comes up in court ,the motorist hears his name called by the clerk of the court, and comes forward to identify himself. The judge then calls for the policeman who charged the offender and asks him to give evidence. He is expected to ive an account of what happened when the offence was committed and to mention any special circumstances. For example the offence may have been partly due to the foolishness of another motorist. It would be unwise for the motoring offender to exaggerate this.It will not help his case to try to blame someone else for his own mistake. If you are guilty ,it is of course wise to admit it and say you're sorry for committing the offence and taking up the court'stime .Judges are not heartless and a motorist may be lucky enough to hear one say:“You've got good rea sons ,but you have broken the law and I'll have to impose a fine .Pay five pounds.Next case.”Some short-tempered people forget that both policemen and judges have a public duty to perform, and aren rude to them. This does not pay! A judge will not let off an offender merely because he isrespectful, but a polite law-breaker may certainly hope that the judge will extend him what tolerance the law permits.31、Even a careful motorist may be asked to go to a police courtfor______.A、 an injuryB、 a motoring offenceC、 refusing to pay a fineD、 being rude to the policeman32、The underlined word “one ”(paragraph 5) refers to _____.A、a jury memberB、a police officerC、a motoristD、a judge33、A motoring offender is usually charged by ______.A、a judgeB、a juryC、a policemanD 、another motorist34、It is foolish for a motoring offender to _______.A 、overstate another motorist's mistakeB 、mention someone else's foolishnessC 、argue that he is not guiltyD 、choose to go before a jury35、If a man knows that he is guilty, he should ______.A、 be polite to the policeman and the judgeB、 try his best to appear before just a judgeC 、save the court's time and pay the fineD 、admit the wrong and say sorry to the court第二部分非选择题(共50分)Ⅳ.Word Spell ing(10 points,1point for two items)36. 乐意地,容易地ad. r_______37.日常工作,常规 n. r______38.多数,大半n. m_______39. 永恒的,不断的a. c______40. 偏袒的,部分的a. p_______41. 漆工,画家n. p______42. 跳跃,飞跃v. l______43.易管理的a. m_______44.缩短,减少 vi. As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class Of academic achievers was emerging Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the US with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. Thy are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college, Asians feel they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer, An effective measure of parental attention is homework, Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps, Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that breeds success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education Both explanations for academic success worry Asian-Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔绝). Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship61、While making tremendous achievements at college, Asian-American students_____A、feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of EnglishB、are afraid that their academic successes bear a strong characterC、still worry about unfair treatment in societyD、general feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents62、What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian-Americans?A、A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian cultureB、Hard work and intelligenceC、Hard help and a limited knowledge of EnglishD、Asian culture and the American educational system63、Few Asian-American students major in human science mainly because_____A、their English is not good enoughB、they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areasC、there is a wide difference between Asian and western culturesD、they know little about American culture and society64、why do the two "explanations"(Line1, para . 3)worry Asian-Americans?A、They are afraid they would again be isolated from American society in generalB、People would think that Asian students rely on their parents for successC、Asian Americans would be a threat to other minoritiesD、American academic achievements have taken on too strong an Asian character65、The author's tone in this passage is_______A、sympatheticB、doubtfulC、criticalD、objectivePassage TwoTelevision has now come to nearly every family. It has become a very Important part in people's life. School children in the US watch TV about 25 hours a week. Some people feel that television is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programs of education, children do better in school. Other people feel that there are too many programs about love and crime on TV, and that even programs of education don't help children a lot. Children simply watch too much television, so they don't do a lot of other important things for their education, children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people. When they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language , and they aren't talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less, Because of this, they don't learn to read or write quickly at school. All children learn by doing, and they need time to play in order to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to do with their parents and friends, and they have less time for sports. Recently, fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watch TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes the children read , played, and exercised more, and the family became full of joy. But at the end of the month all the families began to watch TV as much as before. Not one family was able to give up television completely.66、Television_________.A、is not important to school childrenB、helps children learn to speakC、has a lot to do with people's lifeD、must have more programs of education67、Some people think that television is good for children because_____A、some programs help them love their parentsB、the news programs are important to themC、it makes them play less than beforeD、they can learn something good from it68、Some people think that television is bad for children because_______A、there are too many TV programs not good for childrenB、its language is difficult to understandC、it is helpful to their thinking and doingD、their eyes work much every day69、In the US, school children watch TV about ______a dayA、two and a half hoursB、four hoursC、twenty-five hoursD、five hours70、Because school children watch too much TV, they_____A、write more quickly than beforeB、don't learn to read or write as quickly at schoolC、read a lotD、read and write much morePassage ThreeIt was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched(蠕动) along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "King Enterprises", she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. Form inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking .At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his desk, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.71、Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door because_______A、it was her first day in a new jobB、she was a little bit late for workC、she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong placeD、there was no answer from inside the office72、Marie could hardly recognize the office she went into as ______A、she had been there only onceB、Mr. King was not in the officeC、Nobody was doing any workD、The office had a new appearance73、The people in the office suddenly started working because______A、they saw a stranger in the officeB、they had finished their morning breakC、no one wanted to talk to MarieD、the boss was about to arrive74、we can infer from the text that the employees of the enterprise______A、would start their work by listening to a jokeB、were cold to new comersC、were always punctual for workD、lacked devoting to the company75、the best title for this text would be ______A、Punctual Like a ClockB、A Cold WelcomeC、An Unpunctual ManagerD、Better Late ThanNever Passage Four Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for foof. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on the sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other .this is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die76、Some birds like to sit on a sheep because_____A、they can eat its parasitesB、they enjoy traveling with the sheepC、they depend on the sheep for existenceD、they find the position most comfortable77、The underlined word "they" in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to_____A、birds and parasitesB、birds and sheepC、parasites and sheepD、sheep, birds and parasites 78、we learn from the text that corals depend on plants for______79、what does the second paragraph mainly discuss? A、Some plants depend on each other for food B、Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily C、Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence D、Some animals live better together 80、The underlined part "giving in return oxygen" in the second paragraph means ______A、returning back the coral oxygen to the coralB、giving oxygen to the coral as debtsC、giving oxygen to the coral in exchangeD、producing oxygen for the coralⅤ.Close (20points)It is said that most adult second language learners will be lucky to acquire 5,000 words even after several years of study .(81) comparison a native speaker can usually have 20,000 words. This relatively slow progress has (82) to do with aptitude than with exposure.
V ocabulary and Structure 2. Reading Comprehension 3. Cloze 4. Word Formation 5. Translation 6. WritingV ocabulary and Structure1.It’s expected that the new highway______completed by next July.A.would beB.will have beenC.has beenD.had been正确答案:B解析:本题考查将来完成时的用法。
2.Nowadays the new medicine can______man of the deadly disease.A.saveB.treatC.removeD.cure正确答案:D解析:本题考点为动词固定搭配。

2004年4月北京地区成人本科学士学位英语统一考试试题(A)Part 1 Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:A youngster's social development has a profound effect on his academic progress. Kids who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a higher chance of dropping out(退学). In the early grades especially, experts say, youngsters should be encouraged to work in groups rather than individually so that teachers can spot children who may be having problems making friends. "When children work on a project", says Lillian Kate, an educational professor at the University &Illinois, "they learn to work together, to disagree, to think, to take turns and lighten tensions These skills can't be learned through lecture. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don't have any social skills. Relationships should be the first R".At a certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by an internal clock but by the outside world. Just as the 1-year-old struggles to walk, the 6-year-old is struggling to meet adult expectations. "Young kids don't know how to distinguish between effort and ability”, says Tynette Hills, professor of early-childhood education for the state of New Jersey, "(76) if they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to accomplish a particular task". "The effects of obvious methods of comparison such as posting grades can be serious", says Hills, "a child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation".1. Individualism and cooperation.B. Academic success and independent thinking.C. Socialization and feeling of competence.D. Intelligence and respect.Passage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:If the Europeans thought a drought--a long period of dry weather-was something that happened only in Africa, they know better now. After four years of below-normal rainfall (in some cases only 10 percent of the annual average), vast areas of France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Britain and Ireland are dry and barren(贫瘠).(77) Water is so low in the canals of northern France that waterway traffic is forbidden except on weekends. Oyster(牡蛎)grows in Brittany report a 30 percent drop in production because of the loss of fresh water in local rivers necessary for oyster breeding. In southeastern England, the rolling green hills of Kent have turned so brown that officials have been weighing plans to pipe in water from Wales. In Portugal, farmers in the southern Alentejo region have held prayer meeting for rain--so far, in vain.(78) Governments in drought-spread countries are taking severe measures. Authorities in hard-hit areas of France have banned washing cars and watering lawns. In Britain, water will soon be metered, like gas and electricity. “The English have always taken water for granted,” says Graham Warren, a spokesman of Britain’s National Rivers Authority. “Now they’re putting a price on it.” Even a sudden end to the drought would not end the misery in some areas. It will take several years of unusually heavy winter rain, the experts say, just to bring existing water reserves up to their normal levels.6. What does the author mean by saying “they know better now?”A. They know more about the causes of the drought.B. They have a better understanding of the drought in Africa.C. They have realized that the drought in Europe is the most serious one.D. They have realized that droughts hit not only Africa but also Europe.7. Europe In MiseryB. Drought Attacks EuropeC. Be Economical With WaterD. Europe, A Would-be AfricaPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:How can we get rid of garbage(垃圾)? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the time it can save the land to hold garbage. For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped(倾倒)it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil(化石)fuels. As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.(79) Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil.(80) Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.11. What two problems can man solve by burning garbage?A. The shortage of energy and air pollution.B. The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage.C. Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuel.D. Air pollution and the shortage of land to hold garbage.12. Which of the following is NOT the result of burning garbage?A. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In the United States, 30 percent of the adult population has a “weight problem.”To many people, the cause is obvious: they eat too much. But scientific evidence does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of the 1910s, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less and didn’t watch television. Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some investigations, such as the 1979 study of 3545 London office workers, report that, on balance, fat people eat less than slimmer people. Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts: The more the men ran, the more body fat they lost. The more they ran, the greater amount of food they ate. (76) Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.1.The physical problem that many adult Americans have is that ______.A.they are too slimB.they work too hardC.they are too fatD.they lose too much body fat正确答案:C解析:本题考查的是考生对细节的把握。

In the following years, the white explorers(探险者)began to fight with the Indians for their land. Some Nez Perce chiefs signed agreements with the U.S. government, selling part of their lands. But the government always broke those agreements and demanded more land.Other chiefs refused to go along with the government‟s plans. The most famous was Chief Joseph, whose people lived in the Wallowa Valley(present-day Oregon).“In order to have all people understand how much land we owned, ”he once explained, “my father planted poles around it and said: …Inside is the home of my people…It circled around the graves(坟墓)of our fathers, and we will never give up these graves to any man. ‟”But in 1874, the U.S. government declared the valley open for white settlement and ordered the Nez Perce onto a reservation(保留地). Seeing that resistance was useless, Chief Joseph agreed to move.Later, fighting broke out between the Nez Perce and U.S. soldiers. Chief Joseph tried to lead his people to Canada, winning several battles against the soldiers during their flight. But finally, he was forced to give in.56. Which historic site (on the map)lies in the south of today‟s Nez Perce Reservation?A. Buffalo Eddy.B. Dug Bar.C. Joseph Canyon Viewpoint.D. Chief Looking Glass Camp.57. From Paragraph 3, we know that the Indians wanted to ______.A. show off their landB. keep their landC. turn their place into a graveyardD. build their homes around the polesBIt was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations. ”I don‟t remember ever smiling so wide. Then I looked at my financial(财政的)package. The cost of Dream School‟s tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000- an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren‟t as famous as my first choice. In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn‟t sure what to do.One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents‟ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself. At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus (校园)including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring. As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there. In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream”university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.59. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter?A. He was full of joy.B. He was lost in his dream.C. You should try your best to attend your dream school.D. Your choice of schools should be based on their fame.CIt seems that some p eople go out of their way to get into trouble. That‟s more or less what happened the night that Nashville Police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛)going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder. ”But Hyde couldn‟t go after him. Taking care of injured people is always more important than worrying about speeders, so the officer had to stay on his way to the accident. But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit would be able to step in and stop the speeding car. As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult. Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene.Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination (目的地). At that point he found another unit had already arrived at the accident scene. His help wasn‟t needed. Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about.“Just about that time, ”Hyde says, “I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He‟d blown his engine. Now he had to stop. ”“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn‟t have a driver‟s license(执照). ”That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty-a thousand dollars for the new engine-not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving.63. The meaning of “panicked” in Paragraph 2 is related to _____.A. shameB. hateC. angerD. fear64. Why did the driver of the Firebird suddenly speed down the highway?A. Because he was racing with another driver on the road.B. Because he realized he had to hurry to the accident scene.C. Because he thought the police officer wanted to stop him.D. Because he wanted to overtake other cars on the shoulder.65. Which of the following statements is true?A. Someone else was taking care of the injured person.B. The Pontiac reached its destination at the accident scene.C. Hyde knew where he was going by following the right car.D. The policeman was running after a speeder on Highway 40.66. What is probably the best title for the article?A. Losing His Way?B. Going My Way?C. Fun All the Way?D. Help on the Way?DGrown-ups know that people and objects are solid. At the movies, we know that if we reach out to touch Tom Cruise, all we will feel is air. But does a baby have this understanding? To see whether babies know objects are solid, T. Bower designed a method for projecting an optical illusion(视觉影像)of a hanging ball. His plan was to first give babies a real ball, one they could reach out and touch , and then to show them the illusion. If they knew that objects are solid and they reached out for the illusion and found empty air, they could be expected to show surprise in their faces and movements. All the 16-to 24- week -old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there.Grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. We know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door, the box will still be there when we come back. But does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear and go to never-never land?Experiments done by Bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence when they are about 18 weeks old. In his experiments, Bower used a toy train that went behind a screen. When 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen, they looked to the right, expecting it to reappear. If the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen, all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train. This seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence. But the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case. The researcher substituted(替换)a ball for the train when it went behind the screen. The 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train. But the 16-week -old babies did not seem to notice the switch(更换). Thus, the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of “something permanence, ”while the 22-week-old babies had a sense of object permanence related to a particular object.68. The passage is mainly about _____.A. babies‟ sense of sightB. effects of experiments on babiesC. babies‟ understanding of objectsD. different tests on babies‟ feelings69. In Paragraph 3, “object permanence” means that when out of sight, an object ________.A. still existsB. keeps its shapeC. still stays solidD. is beyond reach70. What did Bower use in his experiments?A. A chair.B. A screen.C. A film.D. A box.71. Which of the following statements is true?A. The babies didn‟t have a sense of direction.B. The older babies preferred toy trains to balls.C. The younger babies liked looking for missing objects.D. The babies couldn‟t tell a ball from its optical illusion.EHow Long Can People Live? She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a concert in the neighborhood on her 121st birthday. When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world‟s reco rd holder. She lived to the ripe oldage of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span(寿命)? If scientists come up with some sort of pill or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150-or beyond?Researchers don‟t entirely agree on the answers. “Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn‟t surprise me if someone alive today reaches 130 or 135, ”says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. “People can live much longer than we think, ”he says. “Experts used to say that humans couldn‟t live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the number to 120. So why can‟t we go higher? ”The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it‟s all just guessing. “Anyone can make up a number, ”says Rich Miller at the University of Michigan.“Usually the scientist who picks the highest number gets his name in Time magazine. ”Won‟t new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working on treatments that lengthen the life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life span is about 80 years, says Miller, “adding another 50 percent would get you to 120. ”So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life span is flexible(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington. “We can get flies to live 50 percent long er, ”he says. “But a fly‟s never going to live 150 years. ”Of course, if you became a new species (物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story, he adds.Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve (进化)their way to lo nger life? “It‟s pretty cool to think about, ”he says with a smile.72. What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?A. People can live to 122.B. Old people are creative.C. Women are sporty at 85.D. Women live longer than men.73. According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas, ______.A. the average human life span could be 110B. scientists cannot find ways to slow agingC. few people can expect to live to over 150D. researchers are not sure how long people can live74. Who would agree that a scientist will become famous if he makes the wildest guess at longevity?A. Jerry Shay.B. Steve AustadC. Rich MillerD. George Martin75. What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.B. The average human life span cannot be doubledC. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species四、书面表达 ( 本大题共 2 题, 共计 35 分)情景作文某学校对中学生课余活动进行了调查,结果如下。

No doubt the store was crowded withlast-minute Christmas shoppers. and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. All the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they le{ t to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the . store and decided to make the best of it. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must a} so have been- television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop re-opened, he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor and philosophic temperament--as indeed tramps 've ry commonly are. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He submitted, cheerfully enough, to being taken away by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent lo prison forseven days. The judge awarded no compensation (赔偿)to the chain store for the foodand drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the story received in the newspapers and on television. Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas too.16. The store was responsible for what had happened.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Efforts to educate people about the risks of subs lance abuse seem to deter somepeople from using -dangerous substances, if such efforts are realistic about what isgenuinely dangerous and what is not. Observed declines in the use of such drugs as LSD,PCP, and Quaaludes since the early 1970's are probably related to increased awarenessof the risks of their use, and some of this- awareness was the result of warnings aboutthese drugs in "underground" papers read by drug users. Such sources are influential, because they do not give a simple "all drugs are terrible for you" message. Drug usersknow there are big variations in danger among drugs and antidrug education that ignoresor denies this is likely to be ridiculed. This is illustrated by the popularity among young marijuana users of Reefer Madness, a widely unrealistic propaganda film againstmarijuana made in the 1930s. This film made the rounds of college campuses in the1 970s and joined rock-music videos on cable television's MTV in the 1980s. Instead of deterring marijuana use, it became a cult film among users, many of whom got high towatch it.Although persuasion can work for some people if it is balanced and reasonable, other people seem immune to the most reasoned education a) efforts. Millions have startedsmoking even though the considerable health risks of smoking have been well known and publicized for years. Moreover, the usefulness of education lies in primary prevention: prevention of abuse among those who presently have no problems. Hence, Bomier's(1978) contention that "if the Pepsi generation can be persuaded to drink pop wine, theycan be persuaded not to drink it while driving" is probably not correct, since most drunken driving is done by people who already have significant drinking problems, and henceseem not to be dissuaded even by much stronger measures such as loss of a driver’slicense.21 . According to the passage, up. to now, antidrug education_______A. has made all people see the danger of drugsB. has succeeded in dissuading people from using drugsC. has been effective only to a certain degreeD. has proved to be a total failure22. The film "Reefer Madness" mentioned in the passage_________A. effectively deterred marijuana useB. was rejected by young marijuana useC. did not picture the danger of marijuana realisticallyD. was welcomed by marijuana users because it told them how to gel high23. The message "all drugs are terrible for you" is not influential because_________A. it ignores the fact that drugs vary greatly in dangerB. it gives a false account of the risks of drug useC. some drugs are good for healthD. it does not appear in underground papers24. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Even balanced and reasonable antidrug persuasion is influential only. to some people.B. Most drug users are ignorant of the danger of drugsC. Punishments such as loss of driver's license do not seem to be an- effective way to stop drunken driving.D. Primary prevenlion is a useful principle to be followed in antidrug educalion25. The best title for the passage would be________A. Are All Drugs Terrible for Y ou?B. Do People Believe What Underground Papers Say?C. Is There an Increased A wareness of the Risks of Drugs?D. Can Persuasion Reduce Drug Abuse?Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The inhabitants of the earth are divided not only by race, nation, religion or ideology, but also, in a sense, by their position in time. Examining-the present population of I he globe,we find a tiny group who still live, hunting and food-foraging, as men did millennia ago. Others, the vast majority of mankind, depend no I on bear-hunting or berry-picking , but on agriculture. They live, in many respects, as their ancestors did centuries ago. These two groups taken together compose perhaps 70 percent of all living human beings. They are people of the past.By contrast, somewhat more than 25 percent of the earth's population can be found in the industrialized societies. They lead modern lives. They are products of the first half ofthe twentieth century, molded by mechanization and mass education, brought up with lingering memories of their own country's agricultural past. They are, in effect, the peopleof the present. The remaining 2 or 3 percent of the world's population, however, are no longer peopleof either the past or the present. For within the main canters of technological and cultural change, in Santa Monica, California and Can-, bridge, Massachusetts, in New Y ork and London, and Tokyo, are millions of men and women who can already be said to be livingthe way of life of I he future. Trend makers often without being aware of it, they live today as millions will live tomorrow. And while they account for only a few percent of I lie global population today, they already form an international nation of the future in our midst. They are the advance agents of man, the earliest citizens of the world-wide super-industrial society now in the throes of birth. What makes them different from the rest of mankind? Certainly, they are richer, better educated, more mobile than the majority of I he human race. They also live longer. Butwhat specifically marks the people of the future is the fact that they are already caught upin a new, stepped-up pace of life. They "live faster" than the people around them.26. The main argument in this pa$ sage is that________A. a small percentage of the world's population is already "living in I he future"B. the majority should say what the future will be likeC. the new "pace of life" is actually nothing newD. however we live, we I must all face an increased pace of life27. According to the writer, 70% of all humans_______A. live by hunting bears or picking berriesB. still tend to live in small groupsC. are engaged in agriculture, or depend on natural food supplies in natureD. lead lives totally differ enl from their ancestors28. The "people of (he present", in I he writer's u6e of the words, are I hose who_______A. rely on their country's agricultural pastB. spend their time examining different racesC. have been shaped by industrialization and mass educationD. are constantly trying to change life as they see it29. From what the writer says, "tread makers" are people who________A. live in large cities all over the worldB. dream about the FutureC. set I he pattern of life for the futureD. make changes in culture and technology30. The most important point about the " 2 or 3 percent" is that theyA. have a better educationB. travel far and wide and generally live longerC. are trapped by their environ men ID. enjoy a faster pace of lifeQuestions 31 to 35 are based. on the following passage. One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is, of course, the voice of the advertisers. Its strident clamor dominates our lives. It shouts at us from the televisionscreen and the radio loudspeakers; waves to us from every page of the newspaper;plucks at our sleeves on the I escalator; signals to us from the roadside billboards al} dayand flashes messages to us in colored lights all night. It has forced on us a whole new conception of the successful man as a man no less than 20% of whose mail consists of announcements o{ giant carpet sales.Advertising has been among England's biggest growth industries since the war, interms of the ratio of money earnings to demonstrable achievement. Why all this fantastic expenditure?Perhaps the answer is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to thinkabout the customer. At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quiteenough to thin I ( about without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it. The designer is busy enough without adding customer-appeal to all his other problems ofman-hours and machine tolerances and stress factors. So they just go ahead and ma}< ethe thing and leave it lo the advertiser to find eleven ways of making it appeal topurchasers afi1er they have finished it, by pretending that it confers status, or attracts love,or signifies manliness. If the advertising agency can do this authoritatively enough, the manufacturer is in c} over.Other manufacturers find advertising saves them changing their product. And manufacturers hate change. The ideal product is one which goes on unchanged for ever. If, therefore, for one reason or another, some alteration seems called for - how muchbetter to change the image, the packet or the pitch made by product, rather than go to allthe inconvenience of changing the product itself.31 . According to the passage modern advertising is "authoritative" because of I he way it_______A. influences our image of the kind person we ought to be likeB. interferes with the privacy of home lifeC. continually forces us into buying thingsD. distracts us no matter where we travel32. According to the passage customers are attracted to a product because it appearsTo__________A. have a sufficiently attractive designB. offer good value for moneyC. fulfill the manufacturer's claimsD. satisfy their personal needs5.
